What’s even more disturbing and wrong is that company changed its name to cover up what they have done. How the hell is that even legal? It’s truly evil.
What's truely evil is the GOP convincing voters that deregulation saves money. Regulation can save lives. along with creating thousands of jobs inspecting.
Companies have been doing this for decades. They figured this out a long time ago and the government don’t seem to mind them getting away with killing people and doing it. 🤷🏻♀️
Holy crap! I had bone meal installed into my jaw bone to bolster a dental implant anchor. A few weeks afterward, I experienced most of those symptoms! I was puking for weeks and had light sensitivity! I visited my primary care doctor (who dismissed it) and it eventually got so bad that my dad had to drive me to the ER! The diagnosis? “Headache!” After lying in an observation room for an hour while getting pumped full of “anti-nausea” medication, I was discharged. This entire medical industry is seriously F’d!
Thank God for Google and UA-cam. That's how I diagnosed myself with pernicious anemia (tests confirmed it) after my doctors told me for years that I was psychosomatic and had anxiety. F-ing a-holes were fine with watching me get worse and worse and believed I was doing it to myself with the power of my mind. Idiots.
In 2017 I had your exact procedure, bone meal installed in my jaw bone to pad some extracted baby teeth and to bolster a future dental implant. My LVI dentist gave me a choice, human for $250.00 or bovine for $1200. I chose bovine. He said that complications were minimal with bovine and this material would settle better for me. I trusted his judgement by knowing his training although I was worried about rejection having issues with white filling rejection/cracking - but so far so good. Added plus, I'm not vegetarian!😂 Sounds like you had an allergic reaction. Those Drs were required to run a check list on you / asking about recent medical procedures in order for them to pinpoint the cause of your severe reaction- which was clearly a rejection to the material from your dental procedure.
The companies should be 100% held accountable for spreading a poisoned product. What kind of company doesn’t test the product first for contamination. It’s absolutely vital and could have saved lives. Glad this is on the news! Condolences to the family.
Not if it is specified in the form they have to sign, as disclosure. I bet she signed it.....and did not ask questions. The company may just be, totally in the clear.
They are saying the truth. You may not agree with the comment, I don't anyone would disagree. The company should be held accountable. But signed documents pretty much are iron clad. Rip to the woman, and I pray for peace to the family@@flyboysneighborhood
I had 2 bone graft fusions in my neck, about 5 years apart. About 1 year after my surgery of the second one, I received a phone call alerting me to the fact that a cadaver donor had AIDS! I was never more grateful to clear up the confusion and they realized I was one-of a few that opted for self graft during that time period. I DO NOT WANT any other persons anything in my body- so glad I chose that route-even though the bone graft site was way more painful post surgery, than my fusions!
I had this same exact surgery in 2003. My orthopedic surgeon used 2 of my own ribs as bone graft. I also made a donation of my own blood pre-surgery to use in the event of a transfusion. I did need one and only need one unit of donated blood because I already had 2 of my own units. Please know there are always risks when donors are involved. If you can use your own tissue, blood, plasma etc, it greatly reduces risks of contamination because it's not foreign to the body. This is a very invasive surgery in particular and I'm thankful for the precautionary measures my surgeons took. Please don't be afraid to ask questions or advocate for yourself if you are facing something similar. I am sorry for this family's loss.
I wholeheartedly agree, but sadly many hospitals don't facilitate self-donations. I had a major surgery a few years ago and I enquired about donating my own blood in case I needed it during or post surgery, but I was told this was not an option. Fortunately, I ended up not needing it after all. It's really great that you were able to do this, and that everything went well for you.
Very wise. Thank you for sharing these options. I’m facing a similar surgery in the future, as is my brother. I’m going to share your post with him, as well as bring this up during my surgical consult.
Thank you for sharing that. It's rarely talked about the issues with foreign blood donations. Your body's natural reaction is to reject foreign matter, it's treated as un infection so your body's forced to fight it off which increases the recovery time. Generally those without blood transfusions tend to recover faster from surgery. Also as long as liquid + nutrients are supplied after surgery your body can produce more blood on its own to replace what was lost and the risks of complications are reduced father down the line.
Well, they've addressed some unforeseen issues regarding the bone tissue they received from the tissue bank. Now they want a fresh start, naturally. But the tissue bank who supplied the bone tissue for their product should be investigated
They aren't afraid. You are. They understand what's happening. You believe that these corporations think of you as you do. Believe them when they say they will do no harm , regardless of the evidence of harm in front of you. You still go back and say things like how can this happen... The cost of one or thousands of lives would still would never put weigh the profits they get and the government will never protect you. It's literally not what the government does. You have lost the plot. It's a trust game and you keep going back to get abused again.

Yes sure she didnt get any worse over 6 days! 6 days! 🤦♂🤣 Go to the hospital and ifnd out whats wrong! negligence by the family! 6 days of extra brain swelling im surprised the family haddent killed her much earlier!
As much as I hate to agree, she should have stayed at the hospital where trained professionals could have figured it out sooner.. She may have had a chance. And I agree: SIX days?!?!
Thank you for running this story. As a person who has been critically ill for over 10 years, I've seen this level of profiteering and cover ups that place patient care and safety as the lowest priority in every area and level of medicine. Surviving in the medical world takes a lot of work, research, and self education. The system is set up for companies to make profits and it is much more cost-effective for them to simply find ways to avoid liability than to actually keep patients safe.
And the medical company just changes their name and never mention the case again. Just awful. Company should be ashamed. So sorry for the families loss!
To this family: I’m so sorry this happened to your lovely daughter but thank you for taking it to a news organization that could alert people all over the world.
@@smokescreen2146 WHAT is your problem? You're too lazy to hear happened to a dead victim? Leave & take your disrespect for the dead & her family with you!!
I work on a spine injury unit at a hospital in Virginia, one of the states that received the contaminated batch. This is the first time I've heard of such a condition related to it. Rest assured I will be keeping my eyes open, we do use this stuff a lot in our OR. While I suspect my facility has already been made aware of it, I've always been the "trust, but verify" type. Thank you for this report and may God be with Lori's spirit and her family.
There is nothing that is 100% Safe. However, testing protocols should be implemented. Performing testing panels on the bone material to be used. Not only for TB but also for other dangerous pathogens. There should be a list of tests to be done on each Cadaver and also QC tests including pathological tests done on the material after processing. Help me spread this idea.
@@-DuoI assume you missed the part about "negligence"...a free market doesn't allow for companies to do as they please with no repercussions. Profit is secondary to safe business practices.
I doubt if they are worried about the money, no amount of money will bring their daughter back. How much is a beloved daughter worth? You can't put it price tag on that! They should sue them anyway, so maybe they will be a little more cautious in the future. Let's face it, they only care about profits and not people. I'm so sorry for the family!!!!
I broke my neck in a car accident in 1987 and was fortunate it did not paralyze me. In 1995, I went to stand up off the couch and couldn't. I needed emergency surgery, and my neurosurgeon asked if I wanted to use bone from my own hip or did I want to use donor bone? Everything was happening so fast, and I had no idea. He said it was up to me and if I didn't want to use donor bone, he'd take it from my own hip, and that it would probably hurt more than my neck. I asked about the pros and cons as this was during HIV which scared me so I asked and he said truthfully they just didn't know so I opted for my own hip, and thank goodness because the horror stories are just that - horrific! I am a bit surprised that with all of the so-called medical advancements we've made, of which some are mind-numbing, how this STILL happens is beyond me. My heartfelt condolences go out to all of the family and friends, truly!! And for future people - USE YOUR OWN BONE IF POSSIBLE!!
Oh man I had neck surgery in 2000. They used bone from my hip too and it was miserable pain! My neck still causing alot of problems and the area of my hip still hurts.
I’ve had numerous spinal surgeries with my own bone and with donor bone. Just over 4 months ago was my latest surgery, and I’m pretty sure they used donor bone. I’m going to try to find out where my donor bone came from. I’ve recovered well, but the surgeries have been unsuccessful.
I was Director of Transplantation Services for The American Red Cross CT,MA, RI, ME for four years over 30 years ago. We were so diligent in screening donors. I can’t even imagine how this could have happened. Something has gone terribly wrong with corporate greed and medicine.
The government agencies in charge of various industries are a revolving door with industry leaders.... also consider the incredible wealth that members of Congress accrue, in even a few years of office....
@@user-uy8nw9zm6b undetected cancer can be missed. It’s pretty rare for an early cancer to be transmitted by bone graft anyway. There are a few cases in the literature where cancer and other diseases been transmitted via organ and tissue transplantation. There is always some risk but the organizations overseeing the process work constantly to minimize any risk by constantly monitoring the screening process and updating criteria. There were also some illegal tissue banks ten to fifteen years ago where tissue from donors with known disease were transplanted. These were people who should never have been considered for donation because of their medical history. I had moved onto organ transplantation by then. It was a huge scandal all driven by greed. The families were unaware that tissue was taken from their loved ones. Things went bad for the recipients. It was just awful for everyone touched in anyway. The doctors and others involved went to prison.
OMG! I was treated for latent TB with no idea how I was infected. Prior to this, I had 3 spinal surgeries, the last being a fusion. This may finally be why I tested positive. Thank goodness I was able to be treated. But so scary.
I am a nurse and received a 9 hour back surgery with human bone graph too. I was very concerned, just naturally, regarding the donor tissue and I was just blown off by my doctors. I will be on alert for this danger and will alert others. Thank you for exposing the truth. God bless your family and may you continue to navigate past this tragedy with the Lord's help.
I work in Neuro and have seen many spine fusions over the years. We used to use hips for bone (as well as any we could save from the procedure itself), but that gradually changed over the years. The main reason, I was told, was that a lot of people developed hip pain that now lasted longer than their original back pain. Also, any part used from a cadaver (nerves, tendons, skin, bones, etc.) have a miniscule chance of anything carrying over. There are a lot of regulations related to this, which makes this story all the more surprising, and heartbreaking. The company needs to be held accountable.
It is a totally different and extra procedure to take bone out of the iliac crest, and it adds to the bill and the time the patient is on the OR table. . However, it was only the safe way to get healthy bone coming from the patient. Yes, now, it is hardly ever done unless it is a special request. The company that provided the cadaver bone dropped the ball by failing to have TB eliminated. Sterilization should have done it. However, they may wiggle out, if the patient signed a release and it was mentioned, in it. These companies are well informed as to what could go wrong with the bone graft, so it may cover what has happened to this young woman. Business as usual. Would not surprise me.
This opens up so much risk to pharma companies selling all cadaver parts that could transmit disease which is something most people have no idea about. Thank you for doing this story and for the family sharing about it. My heart goes out to Lauri and her family.
Orthopedics is the cash cow along with cancer treatment of hospitals. Always consider that with recommendations…an orthopedist tried to rush my wife into this surgery without even attempting PT, chiropractic, injections, acupuncture or meds.
It’s all about the profit. Just like they use people’s emotions on the abortion issue and say it’s about women’s rights. In all reality that’s a small portion of the issue. It’s about those baby parts and cells for the medical industry. If it were about women’s rights then they would be able to define a woman 👩
@@ExploreAnUnknown Looks like they may have sold it as, you don’t have to graft from your bone because we have this product that works just fine. I’ve had scoliosis since I was a teenager. I underwent my first surgery at age 15. They took bone off of my hip to use. I had my second surgery 8 years ago. I’ve healed great but I was never told about them using cadaver bone tissue. This is so scary and so sad for her family! This company needs to be sued. Changing their name and continuing their business is and should be illegal.
I wondered about compensation for the Families! You'd think the company would have insurance for covering issues with deaths from their neglence. Not that money takes the place of a life, but one assumes their responsibility to thoroughly test live tissue falls on them.
Same with bad nursing homes. The name just changes, or state issues tags and owners pay and write plans of correction and cleared. Only to continue with same poor practice
I wonder if the family can still sue a company if they are under a different name? 🤔 If they can prove that it's the same company that killed their child?
I call it "Dead Man's Bones". I absolutely refused to agree to my husband's proposed dental treatment by his dentist. He wanted to pull his damaged molar, put donor bone material in the hole, and later put an implant. I told my husband we don't know what the donor died from or if any disease can spread from cadaver material. Dead bodies are harvested and used in the medical industry. It could just keep perpetuating sickness through generations.
There's at least 1 Law & Order dealing with this - a young man died from what at first the detectives suspected to be a poisoning. Turns out he actually died of ovarian cancer - he had a donor bone used to save his leg after a severe car accident. Of course, the same shadyness was uncovered during the investigation. This has been an ongoing problem for decades. Good looking out for your husband!
@@mambi74 Just curious...you say he died of ovarian cancer, but men don't have ovaries. Did they say the donor died of ovarian cancer, or had it when she died? Did they say what organ the cancer affected in the man? Promise I'm not picking on you, I'm genuinely curious--hard to imagine ovarian cancer affecting a man.
@ Doxymeister In this specific case the man received donor material which was contaminated with cancer cells originating from ovaries. So if the donor had bone metastases from ovarian cancer and the receiver gets bone material from this donor, then he will develop “ovarian” cancer in his bones. A biopsy of his bones will show that the cancer ceels had originated from ovarian tissue. I know of a case where a woman had her ovaries removed 25 years prior but still developed ovarian cancer in the abdominal linings with severe distension of her abdomen (ascites). Science has proven that ovarian cancer originates from cells in the falopian tubes. These cells have the tendency to migrate from the tubes and attach themselves to the abdominal linings. Years after tube and ovary removal, these migrated cells can still turn into cancer which is called ovarian cancer.
My daughter had scoliosis surgery. I’m so thankful nothing happened to her. It’s been 5 years. Another daughter had several surgeries on her wrists. The last time we were given the choice of cadaver bone or bone from her hip. We decided that her own bone would be better suited to her own body. I’m glad we did. I just never thought about this happening. My heart goes out to this woman’s family. This definitely needs to be addressed and be safer.
I’ve also had the same surgery’s for the same thing I’ve had 7 of them and I’m grateful that I was able to use my own bone for the bone graft on my hip
Check out Gabor Maté's book When the Body Says No, and the articles on his website. He writes a lot about autoimmune diseases like scoliosis, it could help you and your daughter out a lot.
I have always wondered how they can use cadaver bones without contamination from the other person. I wonder how many other people have come down with stuff and dont know how they got it.
When one loses bone density in gums it needs to be replaced if a denture or dental piece is to sit properly on top and the person does not have enough of their own to be taken from somewhere else in their mouth. A good oral surgeon will go over this with you and explain that donor bone will be needed. Now here is where they cover the options and what is best. Options include cadavor bone and bovine. Generally the cow being the better option. Also better received emotionally by people.
We recently experienced an almost identical sudden onset of illness with my sister. Thankfully, a doctor immediately recognized the symyoms of meningitis and sent us to emergency for a lumbar puncture. She was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis brought on by the Zoster virus. The same virus that is responsible for Chicken Pox and Shingles. I can honestly say I had never truly witnessed someone in extreme pain until this happened to my sister, it was horrific. She spent 8 days in hospital under isolation, because its contagious. We were told, because of swelling in her brain, there may be brain damage and she may never be the same. I am happy to report she has physically fully recovered, howwever she still is suffering from PTSD from the experience. My heart goes out to this poor family, I can only imagine the pain and anguish I would feel if we hadn't had the diagnosis from the first doctor who saw her and just been sent home with painkillers for her headache. Please don't let a busy hospital or a dismissive doctor ignore your symptoms!! It could be a life or death decision❤️
@roonilwazlib3089 you missed the part where she caught the Zoster virus. This wasn't because of a booster. If anything, a booster may have helped her immune system when she first encountered the virus. Get vaccinated as directed by your doctors

Please do some research on the body's response to metal and foreign body I am telling you people unless you have a severe broken neck or broken back in which it has to be pinned together there is zero reasons to have these devices in our body when you go in to get a fusion all they have to do is put a bone in between your two bones put you in that color there's no need for four metal screws and big metal plate also if you read the insert for these metal plates it specifically states that these plates are temporary only and must be removed at the patient once Fusion has completed it also takes a patients must be aware that they cannot do any bending twisting really moving of that part of the body due to the high breakage
I had a spinal fusion at age 18. Painful & now I have arthritis around it but it did what it was supposed to. It was bone rubbing on bone. Discuss your various options & concerns with your doctor. They don't mind. As for metal I've had the titanium in my back for 20+ years & no problem from it. It's better to get it done before your back degrades too much too. I hope you recover well & start to feel better. Make sure to follow their directions & get up as soon as possible to carefully move around. Also pillows are going to be your best friend. Lots & lots of pillows to place around you. Under legs, behind your back, in front of you & so on.
I hope you researched your surgery, i know someone who do this and it was so painful two years later she had to have them removed, then a tumor (non cancerous) developed and they put her on chemo then surgery. All the while, there are literally spinal yoga classes online for free that get amazing results if the person would just do them twice a day everyday. But sure. The surgery is easier.

They're regular humans with regular human errors just like we all are
Go back to eating sticks and leaves and see how far that medical care gets you. You'll be RUNNING to see a medical clinician at a moment's notice the first time you get sick. You do not have a right to consequence-free medical care, that's the entire purpose of informed consent.

I had severe scoliosis as a teenager and was told I should have surgery. My parents asked me and I passed and I am so glad I did. Instead, I threw myself into dance, taking many forms. My scoliosis did not hold me back. About a dozen years later, I had an X-ray of my back. I mentioned the scoliosis to my doctor. Evidently, my spine had been pulled back into place so well, you could no longer tell it had ever been severely curved. If you have a diagnosis of scoliosis, don't let yourself be automatically talked into expensive and painful surgery.
@thurayya8905 , I am very happy that things turned out well for you. But please be aware that your case is not typical, especially among patients who have been determined to be surgical candidates. Scoliosis can be quite debilitating and even a life shortening condition. One patient’s experience is rarely, if ever, a basis for clinical recommendations for other patients.
Parents don’t always give kids a choice. I was almost forced to get plantar wart surgery when I was 13. Luckily it took so long to get approved that my plantar warts went away on their own.
What kind of dancing were you doing? Thank God for your healing. People are so skeptical about stories like yours, I have a healing story of my own and rather than people being happy for me they immediately question my diagnosis 🙄 but anyway, their lack of belief doesn’t nullify the miracle I received.
I have an 75 degree curve, at least last time it was checked. It's an "S" curve, so it balances itself out. The other thing doctors fail to explain is that the bolts and rod can cause infection, the rod can bend or break, and in such cases infection and excruciating pain is expected and many surgeons will opt out of doing coerective surgery due to the high risk of failure. I have lived with this for over 40 years, and ain't no way anyone is cutting into my back. Such a horrific story. So sad for this family!
This.. omg.. I had the same surgery done in 2011. Fewer screws but the same type of graph. Within 7 months I was dying.. by the grace of God they were able to find the right meds to keep me there long enough for surgery. I had open heart surgery and 6 weeks in the hospital. Ive never been that sick before. It was so bad I wished for death. I know u think ur back hurts now, but whatever u do, dont get the surgery. Look at other ways.. save ur own life and refuse the surgery.

I have worked in that industry. There is no excuse for this. They, in my opinion cut corners. I never worked with these companies. I worked with excellent companies like RTI, doing recoveries for transplant, and contracted with NDRI who recovers tissues for research. When recovering, there are what is called "rule outs". That means there are those you do not recover from based on disease, or even lifestyle. For a company to be allowed to just change their name, that is a fault of the CDC, FDA, and AATB, who regulate tissue banks. The family should sue without question. I can tell you, this company did not do the right testing, and recovery should not have happened in the first place. Hospitals also redacted items from charts too, now that they are stupidly electronic and not paper charts. Just as a note. A medical or dental patient has the right to know where the tissue comes from, meaning the COMPANY that processed it.
There is also no excuse for her family members who made her suffer by taking her away from the medical care she needed for a selfish reason of not wanting to wait for her to be seen. Then they don't even take her back in on monday when she could have started treatment and might have still lived. Their refusal to take responsibility is disgusting. Yes, the company messed up but they didn't kill her; her family killed her via medical neglect
Zebralover: i agree that her family never should have taken her away from the hospital when initially taken for her symptoms because she more than likely would have been administered life saving treatment, especially antibiotics, for the TB infection, which apparently was already systemic so would have shown in her blood testing. That was a huge mistake on their part.
I am having my umpteen reconstructive spinal surgery in January and appreciate you doing this awareness segment. We will definitely have some questions for my neurosurgeon on our next visit. Thank you!
The fact they aren’t required to test for TB or even screen for risk factors is outrageous and absolutely needs to change. Gay men still can’t donate blood in our country bc of an ancient stigma, but we allow cadaver pieces to be used untested for something as deadly as TB is unreal. I hadn’t heard of this at all so the parents goal is working. They’re helping educate the public and hopefully we can all do a little something to get changes made.
Great point about donating blood and gay men . I often wonder why the one lady being head of the cdc said she would never want a blood transfusion even if it meant her dying
At least one hospital in Boston is going to use blood donated by gay men. They will still test the blood, but gay men are no longer automatically excluded from donating blood.
Wrong. On August 7, 2023, the American Red Cross implemented the FDA’s updated final guidance regarding an individual donor assessment for all blood donors regardless of gender or sexual orientation. This change eliminated previous FDA eligibility criteria based on sexual orientation.
I can't begin to convey my deep sorrow to this brave family in the loss of a beloved wife, daughter, sister, and friend. But, I pray they know what their doing in their daughters name. This gift they are giving to others, in sounding the alarm to people who they will never know, Is truly merciful and invaluable! I pray 🙏 Lori knows how much you have offered others, with this unselfish gift, she would be so proud, of you all, though it's such a painful time for you. May you all feel the love we send you, thank you and God bless🙏 May your angel 😇 rest now, in peace💐🕊💐.
I can’t imagine the burden the husband feels from his decision to take her home, especially knowing there are treatments… I hope her parents are embracing him and not blaming him. So heart wrenching.
Hindsight is 20/20. But, if his wife had such debilitating symtoms, he should've allowed the professionals to look into it. I'm not sure if he had any medical background himself. Even if he did, it doesn't hurt to get a 2nd or a 3rd opinion.
How hard is it to test a cadaver for communicable diseases before they use it? This company is obviously getting bodies from who knows where and making a fortune off of it. One simple medication given to her pre and post surgery could have saved her life. My sympathy to her family for their loss and thank you for making us aware of this. As a 66 year old with chronic back problems it could happen to me. I hope her husband sues the heck out of the company who already has deaths from their products and now are changing their name so you cannot find out about the lawsuits against them. I hope they make so much off this lawsuit that the company is out of business forever.
I had an ACDF and Posterior laminectomy last January. They used cadaver bone mixed with my bone to secure the hardware. 10 months later and I still haven't recovered enough to walk to the mailbox. This is scary. Yesterday, a good friend (82 y/o) had an 8 hour procedure to replace his back hardware that failed to fuze and came loose. He's in major pain today and will have a tough recovery.
I am truly sorry for you alls pain. I truly understand. I broke my tibia and fibia in pieces. I had 2 surgeries that included 3 plates and 23 screws with cadaver graft as well. Took me a little over a year to walk. I had multiple hours of PT. I thought I would never walk again. Most painful surgery I had and that includes my opened heart surgery.
This is alarming for all unsuspecting people scheduled for surgeries. Watching the Netflix documentary “The Bleeding Edge” should be mandatory for all. We are kept in the dark about the medical device approval process. This documentary delves into that and highlights several catastrophic outcomes. At times it is difficult to get through certain parts, but it is invaluable information that provides the patient with enough information to ask surgeons appropriate questions prior to surgery. Knowing the cause (metal implants) of major pain, weakness and inflammation that I experienced after having a metal plate and screws implanted for a forearm repair, that over time caused me to develop sensitivity to the metal implants (an 9 year fiasco that I went through), therefore during prior upcoming little toe surgery apts, I stressed and reiterated my concerns several times. Due to that, the surgeon decided to do it differently. It has now been several years and I’m pain and inflammation free at that location. So sorry for this woman and her family 😢🙏.
How incredibly tragic. My heart goes out to her family and friends. I thank them for sharing their story. Lori sounds like the type of teacher I would want for my child. God comfort them as they try to heal. 😔🙏❤️✝️
To the family: I’m so very sorry for your loss. God bless you for, even in the midst of grief, sharing and educating so others don’t suffer the same fate.
My condolences to Lori's family and friends. We are all too trusting of those in authority. She had the operation and things went well until the infected material spread the TB and it became meningitis. I hope the company responsible for these deaths is fined and put out of business. Someone has to go to prison for this.
Anything going into our bodies during any type of surgery should always have been tested and approved. I had cadaver bone placed in my cervical spine to replace one of the disc, as well as an artificial disc. That was back in 2011. No major issues to speak of. Had someone seen this young lady when she was taken to the emergency room, the outcome could have been very different. My thoughts and prayers to this family.
My heart goes out to her family and friends. This article brought tears to my eyes. My mother died more than 20 years ago. I remember my sister and I going through my mother's things afterward. I didn't cry at the funeral. I did my crying in the hospital at the meeting my siblings and I had with the doctors to discuss options: A nursing home for hospice care, bring her home to die, or unplug her to have her die in the hospital. We were told that if we chose a nursing home, we would have to take the first bed available, even if it was at the far end of the state. We made arrangements to bring our mother home, but the day she was to come home she died before the transport crew could pick her up from the hospital. It was a rough time for all of us. Even now, more than 20 years later there are times that I will hear or see something and will want to tell her about it, but I can't. I now have the same problem regarding my father, who died almost 3 years ago.😞 Anything medical that goes into the body, whether equipment or biological material, MUST be checked for any and all kinds of contaminants. And it shouldn't take any laws for this to get done. IT'S COMMON SENSE! Any organization not doing so with their products should be banned from providing any kind of medical products under ANY business name!.
This is the US medical travesty. Do not get sick or require any medical procedures in the US, you will be bankrupt and you will be sicker once they get through with you.
@@nuclearcatbaby1131 If they were able to confirm that the bone wasn't infected (as Elutia/Aziyo claimed), then they would have had to test that to know. But I think it's negligence to test after someone has been infected (and died)
How can you donate bone to others? I didn’t know you could do that besides a bone marrow transplant. (Sorry I’m not the most educated with this stuff). Does it have to be taken when you’re alive and/or can you sign up to me a donor for bones after death?
Any time you or a loved one experience sudden onset of pain and or stiffness in the neck, fatigue, with a headache and SENSITIVITY TO LIGHT suspect MENINGITIS especially if you’ve recently had an invasive procedure like this. Go to the ER. Tell them all the symptoms you are having, that you’ve recently had procedure xyz and suspect this might be meningitis. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THE HOSPITAL. BECOME THE SQUEAKY WHEEL, if necessary. Ask to escalate the matter if needed. Time is of the essence. There are serious risks of infection with invasive procedures. Please, consider the risks seriously before having an elective procedure. My condolences to this family. ❤
This is so common and has been going on for decades. Nothing will change until the $$ is more regulated. The companies should refund EVERYONE involved. Cost of product. Cost of shipping. Cost of surgeries, the malpractice lawsuits and any medical/death costs of the patient. This will also be done in a timely manner. Within a 12-month time frame. NOT YEARS DOWN THE ROAD.
Thank you sweet souls for the message. My heart weeps with you. I have bone grafts too and dental work. Thank you so much for your message to us. Lori’s story is important. ❤ sending love and peace to Lori and family.
My deepest condolences to you for the loss of your daughter. To all her family and loved ones. I lost my son a couple years ago after a heart surgery. Losing a child is hard and not natural. I really feel for all of you. May God comfort and give you strength.
I needed a dental bone graft and the dentist used human bone. They didn't even tell me beforehand, and I thought it was going to be synthetic material used. I felt really stupid afterwards for not knowing it would be human, but the doctors should discuss this with their patients, in depth, beforehand. I wasn't made aware of any risks involved. My condolences to her family, may she rest in peace.🕊️🙏❤️🕯️
I had one of these products after a serious leg injury 10 years ago, I knew none of this so would not have been alert for such a complication! Thank you for the information and please except my deepest condolences❤
I don't understand how this product can leave 'manufacturing' without being decontaminated. I can't believe that bone material is just removed, processed for use, bottled, and sent out without going through a quality assurance.
I had a cadaver implant with back surgery 22 years ago. I had to sign off on it...a signature...thankfully nothing bad happened to me. I find this story so very sad. I was just so very blessed nothing bad happened to me. God bless this family.
I had this same surgery 20 yrs ago. Thankfully, my dr did a bone graft from my ribs and used my own bone. Watching this, I'm thankful he did. It's crazy you have to basically sign your life away to these hospitals to get anything done. Donors are always a risk though.
The love this family has, not only for their beautiful innocent daughter, Lori, but for others, is something to behold. I praise and thank you for your strength and generosity in sharing the tragic and completely preventable loss of your daughter with everyone. My 83 y.o. poppy is scheduled for surgery on his spine soon - I will be sharing your precautions with him in advance of the procedure to ensure that the bone marrow used is tested and safe. I will also be wrriting my Senator in NYS and federal DOH requesting that legislation be enacted immediately to fully test doners of bone tissue for tuberculosis. We will have nothing to do with Elutia. It is a unimaginable that tesfing is not mandatory by law. GOD PLEASE HAVE MERCY AND SPREAD YOUR CLOAK OF PEACE TO MOM DAD SISTER AND BEAU.
I have been the recipient of cadaver bone. I was shocked by this video. I am thankful for the family speaking out. Their pain is great and I am so sorry for their loss.
What’s even more disturbing and wrong is that company changed its name to cover up what they have done. How the hell is that even legal? It’s truly evil.
What's truely evil is the GOP convincing voters that deregulation saves money. Regulation can save lives. along with creating thousands of jobs inspecting.
Sadly they do it all the time.

WOW. someone, everyone. needs to keep them accountable. THIS IS MANSLAUGHTER
Idiots.
That's horrible!
Added plus, I'm not vegetarian!😂
Sounds like you had an allergic reaction. Those Drs were required to run a check list on you / asking about recent medical procedures in order for them to pinpoint the cause of your severe reaction- which was clearly a rejection to the material from your dental procedure.
Please get tested for TB. It does not go away. No telling if you have it, where it will settle in....
Modern medicine treats the symptoms, not the illness.
The companies should be 100% held accountable for spreading a poisoned product. What kind of company doesn’t test the product first for contamination. It’s absolutely vital and could have saved lives. Glad this is on the news!

BBY+ WHY DIDN'T YOU GO FOR THE ADR? ARTIFICIAL DISC
So it is possible that doner products from cadaver to be contaminated.
@@combatmedic91-b76 YES
this was in 1997 and 2002, I was not given that option, perhaps it was not yet available
SCARY. I’m even nervous about blood because soooo many people can be carrying things we don’t test for, like Epstein-Barr.
It’s been 20 years. You’re good. She died within months
@@thehapagirl92 Just putting it out there so people know there are options 🤷♀If people can avoid using a donor at all costs, they should.
It's shameful that the company can just rebrand like that. This is why more and more people are afraid of getting medical support.
You said it all and correctly. Scary.
Well, they've addressed some unforeseen issues regarding the bone tissue they received from the tissue bank. Now they want a fresh start, naturally. But the tissue bank who supplied the bone tissue for their product should be investigated

So basically they lie about the safety of this option because it makes them major bucks.
The disc institute
I had a spinal fusion for scoliosis back in the early 70's at Charlotte Memorial. They used bone graft from my hips like you are talking about.
You never know what illness is lurking in the cadaver body. The immune system is good at hiding and suppressing symptoms for it's own protection.

I’ve healed great but I was never told about them using cadaver bone tissue. This is so scary and so sad for her family! This company needs to be sued. I wondered about compensation for the Families! You'd think the company would have insurance for covering issues with deaths from their neglence. Not that money takes the place of a life, but one assumes their responsibility to thoroughly test live tissue falls on them.
I was given the option of my own bones or cadaver bones. Usually you choose cadaver as it's an easier surgery.
Oh that is disgraceful and they shouldn't be able to just change the name of their company and carry on like nothing happened.
Same with bad nursing homes. The name just changes, or state issues tags and owners pay and write plans of correction and cleared. Only to continue with same poor practice

Thank you for sharing this story. I had no idea. You may well have saved lives. I hope your husband is okay now.

Why not? clinton gave Africa tainted blood. Even forced the red cross to take blood from infected people.
Check out Gabor Maté's book When the Body Says No, and the articles on his website. He writes a lot about autoimmune diseases like scoliosis, it could help you and your daughter out a lot.
How on earth did this hospital not tell them what they were using and the risks.

My God . They use bone graft for dental procedures all the time.
So thankful this story has come to light.
I have always wondered how they can use cadaver bones without contamination from the other person. I wonder how many other people have come down with stuff and dont know how they got it.
This was meant for me to see because my other option was bone graft for my dental treatment. Not no more.

Please pray about whether this is truly necessary.

Luckily it took so long to get approved that my plantar warts went away on their own.
yeah, Im not buying that. sounds like you were misdiagnosed as a teenager

Thank you that is very useful information to know.
That way you can look up the company.
I do this kind of work too, we do TB testing (and other serology) on bone marrow before the product can leave the facility.

Zebralover: i agree that her family never should have taken her away from the hospital when initially taken for her symptoms because she more than likely would have been administered life saving treatment, especially antibiotics,
for the TB infection, which apparently was already systemic so would have shown in her blood testing. That was a huge mistake on their part.

Changes made ? Or is the company The problem?! Infuriating !
Great point about donating blood and gay men . I often wonder why the one lady being head of the cdc said she would never want a blood transfusion even if it meant her dying
At least one hospital in Boston is going to use blood donated by gay men. They will still test the blood, but gay men are no longer automatically excluded from donating blood.
to be fair ...gay men are still at highest risk for HIV ...something bout the anal tissue being not that protective

I now have the same problem regarding my father, who died almost 3 years ago.😞
Anything medical that goes into the body, whether equipment or biological material, MUST be checked for any and all kinds of contaminants. And it shouldn't take any laws for this to get done.
So true
To her family, I’m so sorry this happened to your beloved family member. May god be with you through this terrible time. 🙏
Very informative and well done piece. Such an unfortunate loss. Thank you to the family for sharing your story and educating the public.
My deepest condolences to you for the loss of your daughter. To all her family and loved ones.
I lost my son a couple years ago after a heart surgery. Losing a child is hard and not natural. I really feel for all of you. May God comfort and give you strength.
I am sincerely sorry for the loss of your beloved son. ✨
What we allow…
Will continue.
Peace for the family. So So sorry for their loss. 🙏
Oh man...scary
I had one of these products after a serious leg injury 10 years ago, I knew none of this so would not have been alert for such a complication! Thank you for the information and please except my deepest condolences❤
We are so sorry for your loss... Thank you for the warnings..
Yikes, this is horrible, rip so sorry for your loss, and thank you for informing the public!
I strongly believed that back then people actually cared and were proud of doing their jobs the right way. Nowadays, $$$ speaks.

Why? Medical malpractice and transplant contamination occurred 22 years ago, too. This is recency bias.
God bless and comfort this sweet family.
I have been the recipient of cadaver bone. I was shocked by this video. I am thankful for the family speaking out. Their pain is great and I am so sorry for their loss.
Beyond frightening. Thank you for sharing her story, it couldn’t have been easy. I am so sorry for your great loss.
Love and compassion to the family ❤
