Thank you on this tip for freezing onions. We go through onions pretty quickly, as I cook with them frequently. However, we love Vidalias as well. I will definitely use your information to freeze them for the winter when you can’t get them fresh any longer.
Thanks for this video; it was informative as it gave me the idea to cut loads of onions (ahead of time) and just drop them in when I make a large pot of homemade soup. :)
Hello Preacher….I’ve used the onion peels along with garlic peels ….add Rock Salt or Himalayan salt…some pepper corns and break all in the MIXER or Mill …..makes a wonderful RUB ……..Try it ….Miss. B from TX
A better way to freeze chopped onions is to put them on a parchment lined baking sheet, freeze them and then put them in a bag. They will be separated and easier to get measure. You can do the same technique with green peas, green beans, and any other veggie you store in the freezer.
@@preachersdayoff I do the same with any fruit or veggie I am going to freeze. You can do the same with carrot. Either slice them or shred them. Spread them on a sheet and freeze them. When frozen, bag them and put them back in the freezer.
You need to try freezing them (and other veg.) on a sheet pan, then breaking them up, and place into your freezer bags. They can then be used later, in small portions. You wont end up with a big frozen block of diced onions!
Linda Lincoln for years my wife would laugh her butt off at me when I cut onions and cried my eyes out. I looked like a funny mess. One day she showed our teen son how to cut an onion. She said step one put it in the freezer so you don’t cry and look silly like your dad. I asked why she didn’t tell me that technique. She said, why? Watching you cut onions was the hardest I would laugh all week. So to keep her laughing, 20 years later, I still don’t freeze the onion before I cut it.
@@preachersdayoff Thank you Sir. I did mine like that but it wasn’t concrete reinforcement wire. It was wire similar but has way smaller blocks, which makes it hard to harvest. I’ll have to look into getting some reinforcement wire. Thank you for the response.
@@preachersdayoff I'm going to experiment with different sizes and chopped. Was looking at another video for Green Onion / Scallion, and they laid out small chopped on tray to freeze 1-2 hour before putting in bag or small container to freeze.

Brown or red papery 🧅 skins make a BRILLIANT fertiliser for garden and house plants. Soak a fist full in a half bucket of water for a week, then pull the skins out. (The solution should look like weak tea.) Dilute if it looks too strong. It gives a fantastic burst of growth for about a week. Louise, Australia 🦘

@@preachersdayoff I got mine from the SC state Farmers market in Columbia SC I was putting up Vidalia onion today and wished I had went to SC Farmers market instead of the GA Farmers market in Cordele ga
I'm sorry, Preacher, but I don't believe that. You cut that tree up, and didn't even hit yourself in the head with a branch. Explain that! Luck? No way.
"Tomorrow....YOU WILL BE MINE." I experience this all the time in my garden. LOL (Then a rabbit comes buy, or some other creature, and has a feast in the mean-time.)
Good tips. Being a Ga boy I’ve ate my share of vidalia onions but I like the hotter yellow Texas onions. We will start canning in a week or so. You ever tried a BLT with a fried green tomato? Delicious!👍🏻😁🍅
We never ate green tomatoes growing up. I've had them a few times and I like them alright. My wife only eats the red ones so I can't pick the green ones.
Preacher's Day Off . I picked some green ones today and fried them for supper. I noticed I had some little worms eating holes in the ones that were turning red.👎🏻🤣🐛
The current opinion on the Internet is that you should not vacuum seal onions or garlic because of the gases that they admit they also claim that vacuum sealed onions will not preserve as well as non-sealed
If you don't have a vacuum sealer just push out as much air as possible with your hands, seal the bag almost all the way up, put a straw in the hole and suck out the rest of the air by inhaling. Don't inhale an onion piece; that would be bad.
Had a subscriber ask me to do a video on southern fried wild turkey. The wife put a half breast of one I killed in the freezer and now I can't find it to save my life...Got to write on them bags that's for sure. Mater sammich for you coming up I reckon! I don't eat maters, I know you probably think I don't eat no vegetables... No Kraut, no maters, I'm just a pure communist huh?

I do that method with my sweet peppers and it works great.
Just portion what you normally use into baggies, then into vacumn seal or freezer bags
Put onions in refrig 30 minutes before cutting to prevent eyes watering.

I thought everyone kept them in the fridge anyway.
Vacuum sealing, a great idea. Seal bait fish or cut bait that will be hard to find in the winter blue cat season. Enjoyed the view from your kitchen.
Right! I need to do a bait video one of these days.
You can say Preacher told us So...I love him

So sayeth the shepherd! Those food savers are awesome. Works great for sealing up brass and bullets for shipping 😁
So saith the flock! LOL
Hi preacher, how do you freeze garlic?
I don't know, I've never grown enough to need to learn that.
This is where a veggie chopper would come in handy, lol. Poor guy, crying away 😂
عالی بود 👌👌

What kind of tomato cages are those Sir?
We use concrete reinforcement wire cut into 5' lengths and bent in a cylinder

You never want to mistake the onions for the pork fat.
We've worn out a food saver or two. They are well worth the money!
My only regret is not buying it years ago.
@@preachersdayoffso when I vacuum seal onions and peppers do I Have To freeze them?? Or will they last and be ok just in the vacuum sealed bags??

I plan on using 1 gallon bag with 4 smaller individual bags to keep inside.

How long do these chopped onions last in the freezer from your experience ?
We are some last week and I couldn't tell they had been frozen for a year. If you're cooking with them I'd say a year.
Ad ised in other site to saute onions before freezing...
Take bamboo skewers and press them in long wise to the sides of the bag and divide it in thirds it will let you break the block on stripes.

so whats the tip then for them not stinking the freezer out please preacher?

We’re coming, says the tomatoes 🍅🍅🍅, lol.
Hahaha!
Do you rinse the onions after freezing? I usually rinse mine right after peeling. I'm wondering if that will cause an issue freezing.
I don't rinse mine and they have kept just fine.
You will never shed another onion tear if you can remember to breath through your mouth ONLY. It takes practice but it works!
I'll try that next time
Have you tried this with Tupperware? Any freezer burn?
Thanks Mr. Preacher..
You're welcome Jason!

Ahhh tomato I love it very nice rows of tomatoes
Our have done pretty good this year. They just won't turn red!
😂😂😂 soo true happen to me all the time keep saying am goin to label but then.....
HAHA I still find stuff that slipped by me
How can a vega tele can be in a freezer
How Long can a vegetales be in the freezer
It depends on how well it is sealed. 6 months no problem, after a year the quality may start to go, but you could safely eat them well after that.
Pretty sure reciting Shakespeare makes tomato’s ripen faster:) thanks for the onion prep tips! I didn’t even have to shed a tear:)

nope, and it worked just fine
Not necessarily 😄
Not necessary
Just rinse unpeeled onions with cold water or let sit in cold water for a few minutes b4 cutting and u won't tear
