I just take cuttings about 4 inch and stick them in potting mix, put them somewhere bright, but not direct sunlight and keep them moist. I can't imagine buying all of those products to boost my success rate a few percent. Even if it doubled the success rate, the amount of propagation material you can get from one pruning would still be enough for more vines than anyone could need. A prolific growing plant, at least here in Cyprus anyway.

Thank you so much. This helped. While everyone said the cuttings were not matured, I went by your instructions and lo and behold! All 4 cuttings are growing. So happy 😊

I did some cuttings today to replace some pots that had other vines that did not survive the 'winter' in Palm Springs. I cut some of the passion fruit vines to just place in water, however after researching and viewing your input. it makes sense of the procedure to initiate root growth. Thanks for posting.

Hello 👋 And, THANK YOU for the kind words! Yes, the tips of passion fruit cuttings (though more delicate) tend to root & grow a bit faster. Consider rooting other varieties- or joining a local garden club to learn what varieties grow best in your zone, so you can enjoy these delicious home-grown fruits.

For me living in zone 8 I water twice a week and the plant does fine. Sometimes I have even skipped watering ends it continues to thrive even compare to the other plans that already wilting in the summer heat

Hello, I live in a country which doesn't have a suitable climate for this fruit and a flower. However, I managed to grow it indoors, and I have currently 3 pots in the living room. They are approximately 2 meters long climbing onto the closet. Any tips how to make them grow in a pot to avoid such heights? Can I cut the vines?

Omg I wanna be in your garden group!!! How fun… I’ve always had a green thumb even as a kid but never was interested in gardening but LOVE bright beautiful and weird flowers and plants…. And last year at 35 out of NOWHERE I had a major want to grow those bright beautiful and weird plants/flowers from seed or cuttings…. Now I’m obsessed… ask my kids and hubby… they hate it which is weird and sucks….
It’s so interesting how everyone has their own cuttings mixture recipe, what they claim works “best” with cuttings…

Passion flower grows crazy here in South East Texas. I planted one, and did not believe that it would spread as far as the info said. So I planted it next to the house -- bad idea. That sucker grabbed hold of the house and the vine grew all the way up to the top of the second floor. It also spread from the main vine and covered the windows. I let it be, because the tendrils do not cause damage. It was crazy. Fortunately, two more ended up popping up from the ground about 8 feet from the house --I am thinking maybe from roots. So I cut down the original vine, to the ground, and I cut it if it tries to sprout. The ones that popped up in the yard got huge also, but at least they are away from the house. This plant makes a gorgeous vine. The leaves are huge and a beautiful shade of green. The flowers on the vine I have, have gotten up to 3.5" in diameter and the whole flower is a beautiful purple. What I call the petals are purple and the fringe is a darker purple. Amazing, and it blooms non stop.

When should I transfer the young passion fruit cuttings after they develop roots to a medium size container (2-3 gallon) or to a large size (5-8 gallon)? When do you recommend planting them into the ground? I have 4 main passion fruit vines growing on a pergola. I have a lot of cuttings that I will be propagating.

Nice video. I'm a bit confused about the need for a sunblock though. I've only ever grown cuttings in a warm shady spot. My understanding is that cuttings should be kept in the shade and given bottom heat if the weather is cold, never in the sun. Are passion fruit vines different?

At the end of this video you mentioned that the families will enjoy fruits by next year. That's great that your plants can bear fruit inside of a year! Unless of course I misunderstood. I think mine will take 3 to 5 years.

    • @CP-tl2sz
      @CP-tl2sz Рік тому +1

Typically takes one year to grow a good root system that will produce growth and blooms. Easiest way is to dig some root in the fall and plant it for spring. Caution, these passion vines with an established and extensive root system, can become extremely vigorous growers to 20-30 feet and will take over your fence. Plant them in full sun. They do freeze but return in spring.

@@CP-tl2sz Omigoodness thank you. I did grow that vine and it gave fruit the first season, not a lot but some. Currently I have patio space alone but have my vine in a huge container. It’s approaching year 3 and I got about 40
Flowers this season and of those about half fertilized. There are two preying mantises in residence and they are scaring away/eating the pollinators. I don’t have the heart to kick them off my property so I go out there and hand pollinate the passion flowers. Thx for responding.

Not like a little snip of a section is going to be missed. These things grow like MAD! I'm in hot Phoenix, where not too much grows during the summer. This vine (Fredrick variety) takes the heat. As long as it is watered, it could care less about the blazing Arizona sun. I have one that is maybe a year and a half in the ground. It is covering about 20 foot of wall and now I'm training it up over two new pergolas I bought. I'm watching this video to learn how to do cuttings so when it eventually dies, I will have new vines growing to replace it and also to put some new ones elsewhere in my yard. Before this. I had 2 of them on my back wall and they were gorgeous, spreading out along the wall and cooling it and they were just starting to put out flowers. Then, the city sprayed for weeds on the other side of the fence (road side) and must have gotten in on the passions that were climbing over the fence wall and it killed both of them. So, now I have this new one on the wall bordering the neighbors.

  • @Josef_R
    @Josef_R 3 роки тому

My plants seem a lot more tender than yours, I assume it's because this is their first year, but they are blooming great. I accidentally killed one by over fertilizing and would like to start some cuttings from the healthy ones. It's the middle of August and I'm in south Louisiana (hot and humid). Can I make cuttings from my tender leaders? If I cut them, will they branch? We still have 3 months of growing season left, so I'd hate to damage the healthy ones if they won't branch off at the cut.

Here is another video that I prepared that also discusses the cutting method of propagating plants: ua-cam.com/video/FduD1idqIIs/v-deo.html However, the best way of propagating MOST ANY plant is a technique called air layering, and here is a video demonstrating that technique: ua-cam.com/video/rOjf7LliPmM/v-deo.html If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me! :-)

Good job with the propagation. Thanks for the informative video. I see that you trimmed the vine to control the directions it grows and for propagation. But may i know how do you know where to trim so that it doesnt affect fruiting? Do you prune only in spring or? Before flowering or after? Does the vine fruit on new shoot growth? Thanks.

      Hello Au0rey,
I have pruned in both Fall & Spring.... and many of the vines I pruned in the Fall failed to grow in the spring. It is as if I removed too many of the "solar panels" (the leaves) during the coldest and shortest light days of the year, that the vines quickly failed following pruning. The best results are to prune once the vine becomes "active" in the spring, and after the last chance of frost has passed. Even if there are flowers starting, prune in early spring... and the plant will grow, grow, and grow.... with flowers pushing out on the new growth only.... So the more you cut, the more organized and fruitful your vines will be! Please keep me posted on your passion fruit growing successes! And be sure to create a few cuttings in-ground or in pots, just in case the parent vine dies... As the parent only lives an average 7 years. So be prepared to replace with a new, genetically identical productive and delicious variety. Good luck! Charles

Thanks so much! Hmmm sounds tricky to prune. It's spring for us now and I am not sure what it means by active as the vine is evergreen and has lots of new shoots before spring. I might take some photos before pruning a few shoots to see what happens after that. Thanks Charles!

      Hello,
I am in Portland Oregon. I'm starting a wellness garden for my nonprofit. I thought a passion fruit would be a great addition. However, I'm terrified if it. I have the Blue Bouquet Passion vine. I swear it doesn't like my yard. it very shaded.
I see you have very hardy looking leaves, mine are very dainty and fragile. the only strong part are the tentacles. It's about a year 6 months old.
I'm so desperate that I followed this video and propagated as you instructed, about 5 cuttings. I even created little tents for moisture... t
Should I put manure in it's pot? I see some yellow leaves, I pick them off and it looks pekid and weak😭... I'm scared to kill it. It's raining now.. can they drown?
      Help me please!

      Hello Black Mental Health Oregon,
Keep up the good work!!! I do not recommend adding any manure (or compost) until after their is evidence of roots. The original leaves may go from green to yellow.... But hang in there... Hopefully the stem is still green and will produce some new leaves as the cuttings root. Then, I would recommend that you transplant to a larger pot or in-ground. Your plants can drown if you do not have holes at the bottom of the cup/ container to allow for the excess moisture to pass. You may want to consider taking 2-3 cuttings indoors where it may be warmer and you have more control on moisture. Please keep me posted on your successes! Charles :-)

Interesting video. I live near Nashville, TN. We have abundant wild passion fruit. The flowers are amazing. I've tried eating it and didn't really care for it and I love fruit. But, I think, now, that maybe it wasn't ripe because my buddy said they were quite good, but need to be wrinkly first. These definitely go dormant and die back to the ground. Or maybe they reseed themselves? It looks like you might be in a tropical location. That's a beautiful plant / banana tree. Can you grow these in temperate climates? And just have 'em die back to the ground each year? I'm looking for some additions to the yard. We also have wild persimmons (I'm going to look into a cultivar) and we have paw paws! Never had those but am psyched to to get / try. Thanks for the video.

      Hello Sol Feinberg,
Thank you for the compliment! :-) If those passion fruit have been grown from seed, another factor is that no two seeds are are the same-- like children. Preferably, you should be growing cuttings off of known to be delicious varieties of passion fruit, like the 'Common Purple." The fruit typically falls of the vine once it slightly changes from green to purple-- At which time me and my family eat it & love it, even my 3 & 7 year old girls enjoy it! It may be sweeter when it gets wrinkled, however, that could take another 1-3 weeks. My preference is eating it fresher; and possibly a bit more sour - sweet! My passion fruit remain green, year round, and thrive well in growing zones 6 or warmer. Meaning, night time temperatures above 5 degrees F.
Regarding adding a persimmon to your garden, consider the FuYu cultivar-- Check out this video from a property in Northern California where I planted this tree about 10 years ago: ua-cam.com/video/yJIPxpwWOak/v-deo.html I love your enthusiasm to grow your own food! Keep me posted on your gardening successes! :-)

I have a passion fruit vine. It has grown wild and invasion in 10 months. It has about 30 fruit(not much). Should I prune it back for next season to get more fruit? If so, how much should we cut it back? It’s probably over 40 feet.

Great information, very easy to understand your explanation. Thank you.
I also have a question. I live in Sydney Australia. We have a massive passionfruit vine on our rear fence, the boundary fence with one of our neighbours.
This is the first year it has fruited and there is an abundance of fruit, we are just waiting for them to ripen.
It’s actually taken about three years for our vine to reach this stage. So we are very excited.
BUT, we have a major issue with our neighbour, he wants to replace the fence because he is installing an inground pool.
Obviously we don’t want to do this. And this is causing a problem.
If the fence does have to go, how can we ensure the vine and it’s fruit are not compromised.
Sorry for the long winded message. Thanks, Robyn

The passion vine only lives about 7 years anyway, plus they are so hardy. I'd just try to pull as much of it away from his fence as possible before he starts removing the fence and also make some cuttings like in the video. Once his fence is down, train whatever he didn't destroy up a new trellis on your side of the boundary. Plus, you can add the cuttings that you took to fill in any gaps. Next time, put a trellis just inside your side of the border to begin with, so that your neighbor has no right to remove something you grew.

As long as the roots are not dug up, they will regrow in the spring. Just prepare the trellis or growing area for them to attach in spring. To really keep this plant around, just dig up some of the roots and replant them over the winter in the ground or pots. The root growth will recover and will be much faster for them to return as spring regrowth. Try hanging some of the 3x3 or 3x4 square galvanized cattle panel fencing on your side of the new fence for a trellis. Done this for years.

So a month ago I discovered a Passion Flower climbing out of a tiny 5 inch pot, up a telephone pole for about ten feet and is full of flowers. I assume it will die at first frost…. Because this is in Montreal! I have no idea who put it there…how can I save it?
