Kind of late to the party, but also make sure you check if the variety is rootable. Some are easily rootable, some are difficult, some are impossible (usually white mulberry varieties) and require grafting.

tar makes a bad seal, under the tar the tree rots inside because of the lack of air... their is a powder that works much better.. it is the 21st century after all... I think this is a university of Michigan quote
I used water soluble fertilizer 20-20-20 with trace minerals diluted to 2.0EC to water the cuttings . (my soil mix was sterile coco coir and perlite that had no fertilizer in it ) is that OK or will it cause rot due to too much Nitrogen?
That was the first thing that popped into my head... "I wonder how he started each cutting?" I'm also wondering why he is not Air Layering. I understand that with an Air Layer you use the whole limb, so you end up with one tree. But that one tree is would be much further along.

Just cut it, stick it in soil, keep it out the Sun and keep it moist and they will root. They are super easy.
