Infill density past 15-20% doesnt add much strenght. Just like with a metal beam the material furthest from the center does the most work. So increasing the wall thickness of your parts and 15% infill will be more much more efficient than a part with 40% infill. This will save material, weight and print time.
I've found that (specifically) translucent PLA printed at 100% infill and a slightly higher nozzle temperature is incredibly strong, I'll have to do some comparisons.
Ok thanks! I have done some 100% prints that are super strong like dimple dies and used them in a hydraulic press to bend steels
That's pretty much how fiberglass composites work. The core is just there to hold the two fiberglass skins in place
What about the issue of waterproofing
What higher infill does help with is layer adhesion issues.
Sorry to interrupt all these genius minds at work but really enjoy what you do and from what I see a very intelligent community you have
Yes there seems to be a really great group of people into 3d printing and jet units and stuff which is awesome and they are so positive and helpful
I thought of designing one myself from scratch, thanks for saving me time and failure. You're a legend mate
Thanks. I have done very thorough testing but it should work well, I have just printed a steering nozzle and reverse bucket for it so will be testing it soon
Excellent, thank you. I'll be printing it soon in PC. My welding skills are not at your level, so 3D printing this works wonders. Awesome!
Wish you had longer videos. This is my favorite channel to watch. Good on ya...
I loved the transition from, “ideally on a lathe, but this is how I did it…” 3:43

Haha I tried to do it so people can make it with minimal tools👍
Dropping a comment so that I can find this latter, gonna buy it next friday.
Nice work
I printed a 55mm 100% infill from petg,installed in my kayak turning 2k rpm i got 4mph.
Plenty speed to cruise around.
O nice one! Do you have a video of it? Also how long did you run it ? Wondering how long the plastic will last
@@DktheWelder theres the first test vid in my library.on that test i usesd a 775 dewault motor, printed 2.5:1 gear reduction....it was loud and 3 mph.
I didnt vid the 2nd motor test,it was a 250 watt scooter motor direct drive.stopped using it because it was 24v.
At the time i couldnt swing the cash for a big brushless motor and batteries.
The pump has been retired for awhile now.
Petg will last awhile.my rudder setup been out in the sun for 4 years now,no issues.
I didnt try in pla,i only used petg.
@@nickpellegrinmy motor 500w from scooter is too hot about 3-4 min. Crusing On lake
Rule of thumb for intake is about 2x as long as it is wide, and I found having the outlet be about 50% of area of the effective pump area, where effective pump area is the impeller diameter area minus the impeller center (the hub). Pitch should be about 80% of the impeller diameter I found. ie, 50mm jetpump, pitch should be around 40mm.. I tried lots of things. This worked well.
Thanks that is good to know 👍
@@DktheWelder no worries I also have a 3D scan of the same jet ski impeler that you were holding and a 3D printable file for it. Let me know if you want a copy of it
@@jotham123 Yes please!
This is so cool, and to have the plans available for 3 bucks is awesome! Great work man, love things like this that push what 3D printing can do. My only suggestion is that PLA isn't great for printing items that will contact water, I would definitely print this in something like PETG instead. 😊😊
Yeah a lot of people say petg is better, thanks
Could you coat this in epoxy or would it eat into the pla?
polycarbonate, the good polymaker max stuff. Tho you might have to anneal it in home oven and compensate for any shrikage it causes to get higheset possible strength.
Yay... just what I'm looking for... watch this space 🌞
The key to good impeller efficiency is sharp leading edge and a square trailing edge.
Could it be scaled up to around 150 to 200mm for use on a electric cruiser, I'm planning a sharpie boat around 40ft without sails and fully electric, ive been looking at both jet drives like this, and underwater pod drives im on a budget so i figured this kind of cheap and easy to replace drive system would be perfect if it can be scaled up, not to mention from what I've read both jets and pods are very efficient amd lower power drives, that aren't going to suck all of the electricity. I am aiming for a max speed of at least 30knots however i hoping for speeds closer to 50 knots.
Jet pumps are inefficient, a prop is best for efficiency. Sounds like an awesome project, will it be solar powered?
@DktheWelder yes it will be solar powered, I want to use a mix of drive systems as this boat is being planned as a systems tester for future designs, the jet drives get a good speed for the electricity they use, so could the design be scaled up?
@@tomleake8227 you could scale up the design but to go 40 knots you would need like 500+ hp on a boat that size . It would be really expensive to get an electric motor and batteries that much power
Dropping a comment so that I can find this latter, gonna buy it next friday.
could you build these in an 80mm set up? how much would you charge for 3 of these in 80mm if you could?
You could possibly just scale these plans up to get to 80mm??
Very interested ive been wanting to do this for years for a kayak, what size electric motor would you recommend?
A motor like 56113 brushless motor would be good , but a kayak still won’t go fast as they aren’t a planning hull
Cool, i want to try this style of engine on a rc boat.
Free 3d printing tip: use carbon fiber nylon filament and print with 100% infill, then you will not have to worry about strength or durability.
I have heard of that it is difficult to print with and I think you need a steel nozzle
@@DktheWelder it do not specifically have to be steel, but it have to be a harder nozzle then brass because like many other filaments added CF is abrasive to brass nozzles.
The 100% infill can also aid with regular pla.
There is another impeller on CG Trader that is less pitch better for more rpm , link in description 👍 also the 10 Free file packs are gone but still available on CG trader for $3

Hola Sr ingeniero lo felicito por su ingenio, estas piezas está a la venta, pues tengo un proyecto para un botecito y esto es ideal. Gracias. Felicitaciones
Dude I just bought the files! Can't wait to play with this. Thanks 👍
I've got a brushless Ryobi drill that's like new but burned out the ESC, so I'll probably use a high amp RC PWM ESC to control it. I think it will be perfect for this. I'm going to try and mount it to one of my kayaks.
That’s really cool ! I hope it works well let me know how it goes!
I've got a 2m osb and polyester resin boat I've been considering putting two of these on for a while.
There are some free packs of files left if you want on the Facebook
The best video 👍👍👍 You have golden hands 👍👍👍🍺
I personally would use petg or even abs instead of pla since pla is biodegradable. Also with abs you can is acetone to smooth it and give it a cleaner look 👍
I would like to try petg but like PLA because it is cheap and strong , also a lot of what I am doing is in the testing phase still
@@DktheWelder absolutely, pla great for testing. Just wouldn't use it for longevity on this
Good morning! Congratulations, perfect job! Please, I live in the Brazilian Amazon and I have trouble getting software to print your project on my printer. How can I get your full and 190mm diameter propeller design or even what is the name of the software? I'm thinking of printing the part to be molded and cast in aluminum. What is your opinion? Thank you very much and a hug from Brazil.
One of them is 60mm impeller the free one has a 100mm impeller. I use cura as the slicer which is free the files will work on there
@@DktheWelder good morning. Thanks.
Sorry, I don't understand "cura". My english is bad.
What the software used? Thanks so much
Man I really want to try this but I can't even print a drawer organizer without it lifting. Tried glue, tried tape, I might try a small enclosure with a space heater I heard that works. Idk. I want to try and $3 is more than extremely fair, but not yet...not till I can print reliably.
I appreciate you, thank you for sharing your skills knowledge and experience
Glue stick works for me and also my printer is in a box. Another way is printing on a raft helps , I usually print with a brim . There are a lot of people that are very knowledgeable that have commented on some of my videos , I’m sure if you comment they will give you advice. I actually got lucky with my printer worked well straight out of the box👍
@@DktheWelder thanks for these suggestions. I'm gonna play with it today. I want to make a small catamaran and put one of these in each side, but I got a long way to go.
I appreciate you. Have a fantastic day

I would like to attach something like this on my inflatable kayak, is it possible? any ideas?
Not really, a longtail motor would be better, also jet units aren’t very efficient I’m not sure how you would fit it to an inflatable kayak
i do not have facebook so i can not write the timestamp for the top 10 giveaway.
i have watched your video 2 times now, but the only time i have seen your DK logo was at 7:04.
I’m 70 years old and don’t have the time or resources to get the printer!! As well as try to learn this new type of manufacturing. Is there any way that I could buy one of your jet pumps so I can make a prototype?
Sorry for the late reply, I get asked this a lot but I have a lot of projects on the go at the moment and don’t have time to package and sell 3d prints. I’m sure you must have a friend that has a 3d printer?
@@DktheWelder that’s just like me. I’ve got too many Paper projects. I’m doing on UA-cam TikTok and Roku TV. Thank you for your response. I appreciate it.
Hey Would you do a tutorial on fusion 360 I have a jet boat the trying to design a new jet steering nozzle as mine broke and have lots of trouble with it cheers
Awesome Project!
I am currently tinkering around with a 3d printable jet design as well.
Yeah the missing thrust bearing + generally floating bearing concept might be an issue, maybe it can be fixed with c-clips that hold the rear bearings' outer race in place or a removable lid.
Apart from that, it looks very promising! No real CAD expert, but if you used the loft-tool in CAD to make the jet inlet's general shape and aren't happy with the results the tool produces, you can experiment around with construction lines etc. to get different shapes. Maybe you could also simplify the nozzle/stator flange to a more traditional design. 3d printing windings reliably can be an issue because of the overhangs and might cause some people with different printer+settings some headaches. But that is already me grumbling on a high level...
The inlet was really difficult for me I tried sweeping it and heaps of other ways but ended up with using the loft as you say , which you can move points around to change the shape. I might make a better way off using a thrust bearing I have a few ideas I’m hoping someone will figure out the flaws so I can improve it. The flow corrector works really well I think you would need a pretty bad printer for it not too work. On the intake what way would you use to get it to like curve in a bit better?
@@DktheWelder I just made a short video of how I draw jet inlets in cad (fusion360): ua-cam.com/video/7LMtgWic5h0/v-deo.html
If you want cut your print time down to 1/4 of the time with no strength loss get yourself a couple 1mm nozzles
Those might be too coarse for making hydrodynamic parts. 0.4mm leaves a relatively smooth surface
@@awellner3285 I agree the smoother the more efficient, and I just leave it overnight for the longer print’s
@@DktheWelder true but let's say you don't know what size jet nozzle you want.you can print 4 in the time it would take 1 find the size you want then print that size how ever fine you want
@@stickypaddle6432 yes I ended up printing multiple of each part trying to get it right and with a days wait between each design is pretty annoying , maybe a bigger nozzle could be the go for figuring out the best option
@@DktheWelder bingo
amigo pode disponibilizar o projeto para impressão eu moro na Amazônia brasileira aqui não temos acesso a esses matérias e gostaria de colocar em meu barco
Awesome video and very well explained. I have already started printing mine out and want to see if I can attach it to a surfboard or a kayak. just wondering will there be a steering unit for the front of it?
Yes there is a free steering unit on the same CG trader site 👍
@@DktheWelder awesome! Thank you for letting me know. I was thinking to scale it down by 50% for an RC boat but i am also putting on onto my kayak
Love your work. Ever look into UAV or model airplane engines by DLE? They manufactured the original jetsurf engine designed by a Czech company. I've been wanting to test them out but for 900$ a motor I can't swing it.
I looked into the same Chinese pit bike engines. I think you could get them to work with some gears to increase RPM and sync the output shafts.
I haven’t seen those motors I will check them out
@sourand jaded yea ita a shame. I'm pretty sure the military is doing the same thing with the liquid x rotary. Even the icon home 3d printer is completely unavailable for civilians atm
you should look into adapting a outboard to jet or make one, would be cool to see, id love to print one if i could too
I was actually thinking of doing that for my amphibious boat but I don’t think there’s enough power. Could be an idea for the future thanks mate
@@DktheWelder it should able to, if you made the shaft go straight to the impeller like in this video ua-cam.com/video/BgOvAQvN33s/v-deo.html
Hello! I would like to buy one would it be possible?thanks
You keep saying bearing but those look like bushings.
Are they really bearings or simple little plastic sleeves "bushings"
I just printed them as a place holder until the bearings arrived
Hello can you please have the print files
Is your printer big enough for a 100mm intake? Or even larger?
Could maybe do a 100mm intake be pushing the limits of my printer would probably have to draw it different
So if I have a Cr5 pro high temp and use petg this will still work? I'm curious to give it a try just for fun. Awesome vid as always
I can’t see why it wouldn’t the impeller to the flow corrector is the only real tight part but you can just sand it. There might still be a free file pack on the Facebook page my wife is sending them off
Wished I was smart enough to operate and print a jet system such as this one. I found a guy here in my home town said he would print or make me the parts for one but wanted to charge me 1,390.00. But yet he has forgotten all the things gs I have done for his family while he was away at work, fixing things due his family. My how people are so strong hold on money no one does anything for free, just to help someone anymore do they, I just don’t know how much less hv the Money to buy one of those machines they look super cool and things you can actually build from those things are amazing. Wished I could find someone to build me one of those along with the left and right turning shield & reverse thruster shield
It only costs about $4 in plastic to print and you can get the same printer I have for about $200 . I like the idea of making a turning thruster and reverse bucket for it maybe I will draw and print one ! Hope you can find someone to print one for you I am in New Zealand where are you ?
@@DktheWelder I am in Texas, but I am willing to pay you to make me one if you ever have the time. I can come up with some money if you would let me make it in payments and send after paid off. I would be so great-full. I would like to put it on this little shallow running skiff I am working on now. Any send pics of it. It going to hv a somewhat hull design of a hydraplane racing boat powered by a 86lb thrust trolling motor. And if you can do the reverse cup and turning joints I would pay you extra for those. I can send you my address attached to this text and no o r can see it I believe. Just thought I would offer the money. Been researching the printer thing, and one needs to be educated in CAD, hv a good laptop or computer abd several other things need to know plus knowing how to do everything on the computer and I don’t know how to do that on a computer. Your gifted and talented in that field by what you hv already done. My 21’ center console boat and just about all my fishing gear was stolen right off my truck SA I g Monet now for another one but needed something g to just get me to my fishing spots like across ship Chanel’s drop offs etc. so I’m building a catamaran style small skiff type boat. The kayak I wanted rigged out was gonna run around 6,000.00. So figured I can build something for less than 400.00. And give it away to someone down here in the coast that can’t afford a boat or in hard times when I get another boat next year, kind of giving back, I’m a firm believer in that. How do we enter , went to your fb page and it's just a link that brings me back here. Wicked awesome design I'm gunna use on my daughter's little jet boat I'm building her.
The 10 free one’s finished months ago , but the model is on CG trader for like $3 link in video description. I am putting 2 of them in a little electric jet boat should be fun
@@DktheWelder thats wicked dude hope to see the build on your channel! What's the rough measurements of that intake piece?
So I got a 4 stroke 5 horsepower engine think it’s going to work?
And I’m 15 maybe 110 pounds I could be wrong but do you think I’m going to need two jets?
The problem with the four stroke motor is the rpm isn’t high enough , you can get around this by using a steeper pitch impeller which I think I have on that CG trader file. I think one would work since you are light are you making a board or boat? Also I have just printed a steering nozzle and reverse bucket for it now I will start testing soon.
Oh cool This is the right Nazar up soon up

sick bro, but do you happen to know about a smaller model for a rc boat or something?
adjust the scale down to a smaller size
There are a few others on thingiverse that are smaller , you could scale it down I guess but then finding the bearings etc might be difficult unless you scale it the correct amount

Pretty cool. Won't the threads chew up the plastic bearing?

can i buy 2 of this to you howmuch ?
Ahh could you make this and sell it on ebay so I could buy it as don't have a 3d printer or no how to use one ?
There will be too much money in shipping, in New Zealand we are a long way from the rest of the world. You could ask around on Facebook or something for someone to print it for you locally. I will think about printing and selling it myself but I want to keep it cheap it would end up being expensive
Buyer pays shipping fees and as its reasonable I'd still buy it if it was on ebay for sale
