    Amen. And don't forget the Battle of Lepanto. Tired of people today trashing the Crusades and Crusaders. They fought for what they believed in and most of them sold property and exhausted what they had to fight for Christendom. It's very fashionable to dis them today but most people I hear doing this have no idea of the history of the Crusades. God Bless those who fought for what they believed in.

      You also have to consider that the crusaders fought a defensive war in that they after 750 years of Muslim attacks on Christian countries tried to reconquer one former Christian country.

      I think you may have missed the point of the line. You'll notice it was spoken by The Fool. I think the implication is that the fool has an overly romanticized view of the crusades. The message of the song, I think, is that war has always been evil, for the same reasons as today. The choruses, "I am the king" vs "God is our king," reflect two different worldviews - one of self-worship, on the part of Saladin, and one of religious fanaticism, on the part of the crusaders. Obviously these are not historically-accurate portrayals of the figures involved, but fictionalized to make a point as a sort of a parable. The song of the crusader is still with us, the song is saying - but it was always one of greed and evil. Alternatively, one could argue that the claim of greed and evil is false, and that a noble song of the crusader is still with us. In either case, don't listen to the Fool - he's wrong.

    • @TheOneAndOnlyMrTino
      @TheOneAndOnlyMrTino 4 місяці тому +1

      It depends on whether you see the fool as a fool or a jester. Often, the fool is employed as a proto-stage to a wise man or wisdom as such. Or a sharer of unexpected insight. Moreover, don't ignore the juxtaposition of wise man - fool. The stanza further explicitly contrasts the wise man's search for truth in the past, whilst the fool pragmatically looks at the present. And remarks that the wise man's desire and life's work to reproduce what got enemies together nowadays is impossible due to a lack of purity, taken over by greed and evil. I personally don't see a trace of your reading if you respect the archetypal uses of wise man and fool. I guess we can agree it's an intriguing lyrical presentation and a lot of food for thought:)

    • @ManFromThePits
      @ManFromThePits 4 місяці тому

      @@TheOneAndOnlyMrTino This is true! However, I would argue that first, there was never purity (supported by preceding verses, in which the crusaders are presented as violent religious fanatics), and second, a lack of purity does not imply a lack of goodness. Due to the apparent naivete of the fool in this stanza, I would argue that he is not a jester, but is in fact a fool. The wise man is a hopeful figure, imagining that, and I quote, "could it be that way again?" Depending on your interpretation of the preceding verses, he might be considered naive in his belief in the nobility of the crusaders, or just idealistic. Either way, he is looking for solutions and hope, while the fool just dismisses the past and its ideals as dead, while the present is hopeless - a very nihilistic, and in my opinion, foolish position to take. Yes, there are greedy and evil men fighting today, but so were there in the past, and while Jerusalem may be lost, the song of the Crusader need not be, for there are also still good men fighting today, sometimes on the same side as the evil ones.
      TL;DR: You made an important point about the symbolism of the fool. However, looking at the larger context of the song, I suspect your interpretation may be mistaken.

      @@tchitcho5169 Saladin is not considered as one of the 10 greats general of all times by military historians. One of the reasons is that Saladin was was quite good at running away. For example after the battle of Montgisard were Saladin's army was destroyed by Balduin IV of Jerusalem or after the battle of Arsuf, where Saladin's army was destroyed by the crusader army under Richard I Lionheart of England. Saladin had the fortune that all his more comptent enemies died before him (Balduin IV / Nur al Din) or had to leave the holy land because of troubles at home (Richard I). In that regards he was like Philippe August of France who also managed to survive all more competent enemies. (Henry II and Richard I of England) and won against a incompetent leader (John without Land)

      Funny how the followers of Ishmael and Isaac have been fighting over 2 centuries and have not found the way of peace. One professes to follow a Saviour who was forgiveness, love and peace , yet lusts for the battlefield even with citizens of their own country. Wonder what Abraham would say today. Maybe sending Ishmael away caused a rift that will never be conquered because they never learned to live as brothers. I think the last verse sums up humanity pretty well, the only Wiseman is the fool.

    Although I have liked De Burgh's music for more years than I like to admit, this is the first time that I have actually listened intently to the lyrics. The true magic of this track is contained at the end. The lyrics are 'There is only greed and evil in the hearts of men today. However misguided those before us were, the great driver for them was belief in something above them. Christian or Muslim. Today we slaughter each other for the profits of faceless men.

Most of them were a rag-tag bunch of mercenaries who tended to fight battles with anyone they came across, whether Jews, Muslims or Christians. They killed a lot of innocent people on the way to the holy land. Many of them never got there, choosing to settle in Byzantium instead.

    There is No One Righteous
    (Psalm 14:1-7)
    9What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
    10As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
    11There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
    12They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
    13Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
    14Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
    15Their feet are swift to shed blood:
    16Destruction and misery are in their ways:
    17And the way of peace have they not known:
    18There is no fear of God before their eyes.

      Wilt thou a Templar become ? Or a Knight of St John ? So many choices if thy heart be true. Consider it like a foreign holiday - you get to stay in provided accommodation throughout the Eastern Mediterranean - but in return you have to swear holy orders and bear a sword on behalf of His Holiness the Pope - and never give up your vow, or question your orders - on pain of death. If Templar thou seekest - then take credit from the finest families in all of Europe thou shalt, and charge interest thereto, and ye shall find thy reward not only in Heaven but on Earth also, lest ye be accused of heresy when the King of France won't pay up. And unto this I say therefore Templar, bury thy wealth in place far and unknown where no King or Cardinal can find it, or use it without paying due. And thus ye shall create a legend !

    Ok kids... this is a good song! However, the Crusaders of old and the current situation in the middle east are hardly related... well except the Muslim factor. Truth, ISIS and Islam in it's purist forms (from centuries back) cannot co-exist with anything.
    However, the real root of the current issue is poverty, education and exploitation. That is to say that IF the people of Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Iran etc were en masse solvent and educated they would see other options as we have in the west. It was not that long ago that we behaved in similar manner really... however the world was not global and one could only do so much damage with swords!
    HOWEVER, consider that wealth is behind everything... the top 1% will have 50% of the worlds wealth next year... what does that say of the other 99% that allow this. Perhaps, as repugnant as they are, the thugs are lashing out in the only way they know being emboldened by greedy heretic bastards! We have after all ensured they have stayed at war for the last thousand plus years, fighting for scraps from the western table. HOWEVER in the current, turn it into a parking lot and make the entire region glow, I say! We can find other sources of energy for the next hundred or so years and let Allah or God or whomever you believe in sort out who is innocent and belongs where... do them a favor as life is short a meaningless over there now!

    All you who so fashionably like to dis the Crusades and the Crusaders because you are such goooodddd people and so moral and understanding and "hip"...let me just point out to you...centuries of Muslim conquest and piracy led to a European response. Look at the Battle of Tours, for example, and the conquest of Spain and the attacks on the Italian peninsula. You who are so liberal and hip, you better thank God for what the Crusaders did. If it hadn't been for them, for men before then like Charles Martel, for the Knights of St John who fought the battle of Malta after the Crusades and for the victory of Christendom at LePanto, you wouldn't be having a free debate. You'd be under sharia law and bowing to Mecca.

He fights, or rather fought, to try to protect and help people. It is not the men who fight that are filled with greed and evil. It is the men who lead the men who fight. Rwanda, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Cambodia, Somalia, he fought in all of them. But the men who lead them forbid interference unless they are directly attacked. So the men who fight watch on as the men who lead order them to stand down and let the innocent get massacred.

      This song was a mish mash of the first and 2nd, maybe 3rd crusade.
      King Richard did defeat Saladin in battle, and the last battle was pretty epic on king Richards part (not so much for Saladin).
      But as you stated Jerusalem did not get liberated by king Richard during his time in the crusades. King Richard was able to gain more territory and made a deal with Saladin to give Jerusalem access Christian pilgirms without them being attacked on their way to the holy land.
      Ironically both king Richard and Saladin were killed by people in their own land and not by foreigners of a different religion.
