If you are using light wire, I like to heat shrink just onto the connector to provide some stress relief and stiffness when shoving it into housing.
Good idea.
It took me a few times, before I realized the proper direction, for the metal crimp to go inside the housing, and the wire sides. (Thanks to UA-cam videos for helping!) Now, this video is short and concise, and all you need to know, to get started. I happened to purchase the Iwiss Crimper tool, from Amazon. It is an affordable crimper, that works great! Do it once and do it right.
I'm glad you said that the difference between the amp size of the connector. The power limit will be the same because the spoon side is the same for all three. It's just the hole side that is different so the wire properly seats in the connector. Too many people comment on a connector not able to handle the power. It's just the wire being able to fit in the connector for a proper crimp.
Powerwerx has dyes for the crimper on their website. That way, one crimper can do multiple sizes of connectors, which can save some money in the long run.
Great video Mike. You were my inspiration to get power poles. I couldn't imagine not having them now!!!
Great to hear!
Thanks for showing how to do this properly. I have no problems crimping the wires to the connectors, but have all sorts of problems getting the wires into the housings (I try to push them in). Next time I'll try using a small screwdriver like you show in the video.
Necessity is the mother of invention.
My Iwiss crimpers have the little box which I love, make for perfect crimps everytime!!!
Awesome, that helps a lot!
I had the 45 amp ones and my copper was passing the second tan so it wouldn't go all the way in, first thought it was the cable since it was 6awg thick. Just learned Anderson and MC4 connector which I think was a bit easier. Great video 👍
Love it! Just watched the _justified_ rant against the “insertion/removal tool”. Wish I would have watched THIS video a long time ago. Glad you set us straight on which way is up when you insert the connection into the housing. Super helpful! Thanks so much!! WB3CFN
This was very helpful! Thank you!
Thanks Mike, Gotta love them power poles, Big and small. They just work!
You got that right!
I was told “red on the right with the tongue on top”👍
Credit to you as I have now power poled my world
Thanks for a great video
Great job Mike
Thanks Chris!
New subscriber, and new to ham radio here. Currently pursuing my technician and general license. I’ve developed a real interest for portable setups, and your videos have helped me make some decisions. Thanks for the content.
That is fantastic. Welcome to the hobby and welcome to the channel. So glad the videos help!
Good stuff, Mike. Both your video and Scott's (HR4NT) answered a long standing question I had about why the different amperage connectors. Answer: Different wire widths. Thanks!
Glad to help
Thank you for this. Never would.have thought to use the screw driver
Dude, you freaking rule. Hail Slayer!!

Thank you very mucho for the video, It is very useful.
Excellent, thank you for that explanation on how to create a power pole connection or putting one together. This is great for a new ham like myself. Thank You.
Thanks so much Janice, you're exactly who this is for. Glad you found it useful and welcome to the hobby!!
@@hamradiotube Michael, my only question is once you put the connections together, how do you check to make sure they are electrically good?
Very well done 🤣
The screwdriver is an excellent tip
Many thanks for sharing / 73

Sometimes it's the simplest things that'll get the job done.
@@hamradiotube no doubt yes 👍
RRTD Red right tongue down As ur looking at them Red on the right pins facing down
There some dark metal pieces that came with my Powerwerx kit. Any idea what these are for? Thanks!
Which connector for my Yaesu 500 FTM and Yaesu FT 891? 15 or 30?
Do you ever put a spot of solder on the end of the connector to get a stronger electrical connection? I know some folk that do and some that don't.
Sometimes I do. Not typically though.
Kevin,
You didn’t show the 75 amp version. My Shore-station boat hoist motor uses one. I don’t have a crimper for that size though……
I’ll let Kevin know.
XT-60/90 connectors blow away APP's.
ok
👍🏻🤟🏻👍🏻
thanks buddy
@@hamradiotube I still haven’t gotten on the Air yet!!! 🤯
Too different for George Jetson. Just right for Willie E Coyote! Should work. No ACME products!
No, they will not go in one way, says the guy who inserted them the wrong way. I used a jewelers screwdriver to extract it.
But you didn’t…reeeee…….properly…….reeeeeeeeee……………solder…..reeeeeee……..the ends…reeeee. Sometimes I flow some solder in the end just for peace of mind even thought the connection will work the same regardless. It also helps me keep up my soldering skills as if you get messy with it the globs of solder can actually make the contact difficult to go into the housing or not make a good contact once in the housing
like the intro, but your old choice of intro music was way too loud. Guess I am getting old.
I'm confused. I'm not using my old intro anymore. You could be getting old too though lol. Maybe it's time to change your screen name from Screamingtut to Keepitdown? 🤣
