Hey hey Lindy 🥰, all smart ",frugal" ways of living 👍🏾. Looking forward to seeing ur new jacket. I actually have Terry's grandmother's sewing machine. They definitely don't make them like they used to 😉. U look well my friend , always nice to see ya
I only eat 1 meal a day and then a snack before bed. Plus I buy any meat (on sale) in bulk and put some in the freezer. If 6 pork chops in the pack I put 3 in the freezer. We buy more on sale items now.
If you want a good sewing machine get a Singer 401a. They are from the 60’s and are work horses.. I have had mine since 1977. I don’t like the new fancy machines. I do like the Singer Heavy Duty 44 series, 4411, 4423, 4432 and so on . The last two numbers indicate the number of built in stitches. My son wanted a machine (he tried to take my 401a😂). So I bought the 4411, he loves it. I wanted to get him the 4423, but this was during the pandemic and I was lucky to get the 4411.
Before you turn your jacket into a pattern, please try washing it in borax, without any soap in the washer. I have done this with bath towels when they had a lot of soap build up and it really works to restore softness.
My neighbor, who was in her 70's in the 1980's, used to take bacon grease and made refrigerator cookies with raisins. The sweet, with the smoky, saltiness, made a delicious cookie. I use bacon grease to fry potatoes or for making a roux in soups and gravies. Bologna was 5.99 on sale at our deli, so it is no longer a bargain for me. I use rags for cleaning all the time. I have a mesh bag to keep the dirty ones in, and when there is enough, I do a load of just rags in the washer. Hope you're staying cool Lindy!✌❤
@gary-rr7jp bacon grease can be "washed" by putting the grease into a pot with water , bringing it to a simmer, stir, then when it's cooled placing the pot in the fridge to harden. The salt and food particles stay in the water part, and the grease or lard harden for later use. It's great for making pie dough. Best wishes to all.
Thank you for your tips. My mother use to work at a children’s Nursery and I got a job there and sometimes we worked there together! 50 kids….! My mother sat at a large desk for about 2 hours and she made patterns like you with her favorite clothes after they were worn out and sewed them by hand while the kids napped. They were usually pretty tired by nap time so that gave my mother lots of time to make dresses, skirts blouses etc. She worked there for eight years. There is so much waste when times are good that it’s amazing how we can find ways to save money that is just plain common sense. Not any other choice! I hope you’re cool in your van and things are going better and you are in my prayers. Tell little Marley hi! ❤❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🐶
Years ago, my dad used to wrap up a combination of potatoes, vegetables, and meat in tinfoil and tie it to the motor of the car, when we would go camping. By the time we got to the campsite, dinner was cooked. I have no idea how he managed to tie dinner to the motor but it saved on cooking fuel and cleaning pots.
You can get bags of 15 bean soup at a decent price, much cheaper than tying to mix cans of beans. They do have to be soaked a long time before trying to boil them. And I have to say, Marley scared the crap out of me when she barked, I was in the kitchen and dropped the jar of pickles wondering where that viscous noise came from. Pickles did survive tho :)
My mom and dad used lard too. My dad would take the bacon grease to cook also. My mom used to make beans and noodles. Progreso makes and it’s so easy to make.
I have the same kind of sleeping jacket and I absolutely love it! Here's a tip to make it as soft and fluffy as almost new--- At the laundromat, wash it in warm water and then pour literally a half gallon ($3.29) of ordinary *WHITE VINEGAR* into the washer, half at the rinse cycle to get *ALL* the soap rinsed out, and the other half *IN THE FINAL RINSE CYCLE.* Dry it with a few dryer wool balls on medium heat (and no vinegar smell will get cooked into the fabric!) and I promise you, you will not be disappointed! You can then use a cup of the white vinegar in the final rise from then on. The minerals in the water and left over soap makes the fabric less soft. The *FINAL* rinsing it in the vinegar makes all the difference!
60 yrs ago my dad bought Dinty Moore Beef Stew & added other canned vegetables to it & cooked it on 1 burner plate & it fed our family in a motel room while moving
I rarely pay full price for anything..thrift shops for clothes , housewares, books. I reuse tinfoil and wax paper. Since I am not full time nomad...I use my local library for dvds and books..all free. Being a big time reader, that alone has saved me a fortune. Selling my business of 37 years this year. Please try to support local business when you can.. Amazon is eliminating competition and killing small businesses
I make my own rye bread using rye sourdough starter, rye flour, water and salt. I make small 1 lb loaves in my little old westbend brand just for dinner mini bread machine, a loaf lasts me a few days and its really hard to find good fresh rye bread in the USA with no sugar or other strange ingredients. Im going to try your potato rust remover trick.
My version of pot pie is to just spoon the filling over split biscuits. If the biscuits are already made or frozen, it is quick to throw together and doesn't require the whole thing going in the oven. I had never heard that about the warm water and headaches. Keep those tips coming!
My parents were born in 1923, and grew up during the depression, plus my father was the youngest of seven kids in a poor farming family. We always split a can of soup 5 ways (3 kids), and then my dad had a bowl of crackers broken into milk. Mom often made roast beef for Sunday dinner, with tomatoes, potatoes, onions and celery, and we’d see it all week: first as leftovers, then in sandwiches, and the last bits of meat went into leftover casserole, one of my favorite dishes! Whatever meat was in the frige (usually roast or sometimes ham) would be chopped up and mixed with the bits of leftover vegetables from the week, all mixed together with white or cheese sauce, topped with crushed potato chips. Comfort food! Sadly, my kids rejected most casseroles.😭
Lindy I love you're frugal vlogs I grew up on bologna, Vienna sausages, spam my mom was a single mother for awhile we ate pb&J also I lot don't really eat any of these anymore but there are many things we can do to save we don't really think about and buy and use good tips 😊
We had a lot of creamed chipped beef on toast, or mom would add it to scrambled eggs for dinner. I didn’t realize until a few years ago that serving scrambled eggs for dinner was probably a cheaper meal.
Just bought a $3.00 100% wool blazer for this winter. It had large moth hole in the back. Watched a video on how to pull threads and reweave it. Recycling !
I made a meat loaf 2 days ago. Going to slice the rest into 4 slices and wrap in Saran wrap and put in a freezer bag. I also buy tuna packets for sandwiches or salad.
My money stretches shopping at thrift stores and is 6:08 fun also. If I don’t find what I’m looking for, Walmart is next stop.Making a pot of pintos weekly helps the food budget. After day or two I make chili and put some in freezer. I use a crock pot liner for beans, easy clean up.
I knit and crochet. I sew some too. Whenever I can't find something that I have in mind (like your jacket) I make it if I can. Doesn't always save me money, but a lot of times it does. I shop Ebay, thrift stores for good yarn for socks, hats etc. I watch the sales at Joann, Michaels and sellers on Amazon. If you are willing to wait for that bargain price you can find it a lot of times. My socks are my biggest thing. A few years ago I went to Walmat to replace some socks and noticed there were no socks like I had bought there in the past. I want one to cover my ankle (like a cuffed type) they were all sporty type socks and nothing like I wanted. So I got proficient at making them. Now I won't go back. They fit me better and last years as well being made out of more natural materials.. I have made a pattern, like you out of a favorite top before. Why not? I will love to see the jacket you make!
It's always good to give money saving tips they are great. Using your jacket as a pattern is going to be interesting and I don't want to miss any of your shows on this. Thanks
I had some leftover food to reheat while out camping in my campervan. Put in the skillet on the camp stove was too hot and burned/scorched the food. So I made a kind of double boiler, water in the pot, low heat then set the little pan on top with a lid and it slowly heated the food without scorching
Hey lindy I i cut up canned biscuits into 4ths or use Jiffy bisquit mix & drop teaspoon ful on top of the soup while its boiling. It makes a dumpling or another form of pot pie in a pot instead of baking dish.
Like this series! After healthy breakfast, lunch, had some PB&J for dinner (Trader Joe's has reduced sugar strawberry jam). This also served as my dessert. Yum. I remember bologna cups in the oven with ketchup, and liverwurst (yuck!) but lots of homemade meals and especially the baking...mmm! which my mom had for us. I prepare my food which helps me afford other things...and I prefer it to eating out...minus the cleanup!
Loving your tips and ideas 🎉 As for worn out clothes and sweater for more than 15 years looking like new was clothes with bakingsida and borax shaved laundry soap or castille ½tsp sm load 1tblspn large. Ive had compliments from adults n children how soft everything is using white vinegar for rinsing
Awesome idea on the bed jacket, love it. Mom taught me to do that too. Once I traded a permanent on my hair for remaking a jacket by seam ripping it apart. Lindy, I have an idea on your jacket. If you pick a fluffy blanket fabric that does not ravel you can skip the French seams & just do the traditional back stitch seams. Ive seen this blanket fabric at Walmart or Joann Fabric & in thtift stores. Ive even seen some young chickadees make a jacket out of thrifted quilts, which that seam would be nice to do a Flat Felt seam, or what i like to do is fold the seam over flat & stitch it down to the jacket skipping the French Seam. Can u tell I dont like doing French seams, lol, they take so much more time. Can wait to see what fabric you find for your jacket.
Hi Lindy, my mom enjoyed sewing by hand. I have done some but never a large project. I look forward to seeing you make a new jacket! You look cooler, so hopefully you are managing the heat. Thanks for sharing your tips, I will have to see if soaking my feet in warm water will alleviate a headache, never tried that before! Have an awesome week sweet lady! 🥰
Hi Lindy: could you show how you make pot pie. I know how to make crust from scratch. Is that what you do? PS My grandma used old garments like dresses that fit her well to make patterns too. (Patterns are so expensive now.)
We're using t-shirt rags as paper towels in the kitchen & bathroom. Also cook @ home & from scratch, (limiting pre-made ingredients like pop-apart biscuits, jarred sauces, cake mixes), almost all the time. A tip for cooking @ home for when you just don't want to cook:, is monthly to buy a favorite frozen treat/dinners that you wouldn't normally buy: pizzas, etc. bottled sauces, & packaged meals. When you are too tired to cook @ home pull out 1 of your 'treat' meals & enjoy an easier prep & yummy dinner. Rotate so they don't get freezer burn & try to limit your convenience food 'treat' meals to 1/week so they don't blow your budget. But this way a frozen pizza, fettuccini Alfredo, (from a jar), or other entree is still much cheaper than fast food meals or take out. And you have saved some energy so you can start the next day rested & relaxed. Our next goal is to make homemade bread. 🤞🏼🤞🏼Then we're going to try sourdough bread. 😉 I hope you & Marley are keeping cool, as best as possible. Take care!
I have a similar jacket I got at Ross last year for only $11. It's cheaper than what you can make it for. It keeps me so warm. So check out Ross starting late summer.
Lindy, I’ll tell you how frugal I’ve been LOL. I once cut the end off a potato, added salt and cleaned an old cast iron skillet I got from an elderly friend to clean up for one of my kids. I then cut the icky part off the potato and made a single serving of potato soup with what was left clean.
I love that jacket, I hate to see you tear it apart. Your dog must hear someone outside close by. Get yourself some "bear spray" for an emergency. Great tip for the rusty skillets. I never heard of that before. I liked bologna as a kid until my mom put grape jelly on a sandwich for me. I go for the all pork or beef bologna in spells, bit you're right it's expensive now. I purchased that kind of lard, it goes rancid. I had to throw away 4 blocks. I just save my bacon grease in a glass jar. Does anyone have any tips on how to save their lard? Crisco, no worries because it's synthetic something. I didn't think about that leftover stew for pies. I love chicken pot pie, so I would make enough filling for later. One pot cooking is my thing. I have ruined a lot of my sheets with bleach. They're starting to get holes in them. So I cut them up into strips and save them to make an emergency rope.
I didn’t even know they still made Lard. I’m going to look for it. We keep our bacon grease too. Everything in my van is hand sewn. I hand sew everything. I was that weird kid that liked balogna sandwiches because we rarely got them. I did not know that about headaches and soaking your feet. Lots of good tips. Thanks! 😆
Dont know your income level, but in California you may be eligible for Cal Fresh, which is food stamps. Again i dont know where you live, permanent address, and file taxes and so on..also there is a pot that looks like a sauce pot you can cook in, on Amazon. Its electric. Some truck drivers use them. Can fry meat in, then add potatoes or rice and then a can of vegetables. Let it simmer. Easy to clean and lightweight .
Hi Lindy: I'm very frugal..I refuse to waste just about ANYTHING. My daughter once told me I have, "depression-era mentality", even though I was born in 1950. I don't care much for baloney, either, and nowadays, it's no longer all that inexpensive. We always used rags for cleaning, and then re-use them after washing separately. Your hair looks really nice. I hope you're doing well and keeping as cool as possible. Hugs to you and Marley. Rosemarie ❤
Here's a tip, make a list of what you need and want before you go to the grocery store and stick to that list. No impulse buying and never shop when you are hungry. Have a dollar amount you are willing to spend on things that you use that you might find a great deal on and stick to that predetermined dollar amount. Planning your shopping n sticking to that plan will save you money
I got my eyes checked at Stanton optical for 60.00 cash price .I went ahead and ordered by bifocal glasses from Payne Glasses. I got 2 pairs of bifocal glasses for under 80.00 .It took about 10 days turnaround time. If I bought the glasses from Stanton it would have been 130.00 online and 190.00 in the store
Hi Lyndi. I'm making one pot meals all the time and freeze for the week. Lentils and split peas cook fast and they're very nutritious and affordable. Hope you were able to get some relief from the hot weather. Sending blessings to you and Marley. ✨💖🐕🐾💖✨
I love bologna. My mom would buy it in rolls/logs, so we had to cut our own slices, which we cut thick. But not all bologna taste the same. My mom used a treadle sewing machine to make all our clothes. First store bought dress was for my 8th grade graduation.
I love you so much dear Lindy because I am so wandering and adventure in my thinking you are so great and brave lady love you again live you long time with the better health and wealth happiness and goodnesses with you all the time take care stay safe have a nice time all the time for you good luck 🙏🙏🙏🤞🤞🤞❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
💥 LINDY here's a tip.. if your clothes come out of dryer w/ static, put vinegar in a downy ball when washing them use dryer sheets in dryer & clothes come out ZERO STATIC (& NO VINEGAR SCENT)..ALSO, you look like your feeling better 👍
I'm not in a vehicle but I do have limited ways to cook. I cook most meals in my rice cooker. Chicken, beans, roast type meals. I have a toaster oven and I use that as much. My stove is gas and I haven't had gas service since 2014. I love chicken bean dip type meals and I also make chicken slaw wraps. I also make enough for at least 4 days of meals. Having a frig helps. Another thing I tried not long ago is....... Sundried tomato wraps with cream cheese and jam. That works good for a meal or snacks. I'm still watching you but just don't comment much. I love watching you and seeing your still doing well 💖
Lard is actually a healthier alternative to shortening. I rarely buy shortening now. When it first came on the market it was marketed as a healthier alternative, but it's not. Natural fats, when used sparingly, are better alternatives. I use real butter only too. I wait for a good sale before buying it. Your can use butter in pie crusts or biscuit dough as well. I don't fry much, but we use lard as well.
I try to substitute products. For example, BBQ sauce...was over $3 a small bottle. I bought spicy French dressing for $1.99 that had a lot of the same basic ingredients. And, it was in a bigger bottle
Bologna! My dad (born 1924) had a small herd of beef cattle. On Saturdays we would go to the local farmers auction. He’d buy, sell and we’d be home by afternoon. When the sickly/walking painfully cows came through my dad always commented “that’s a bologna cow.” I’ve never eaten bologna!
Ooo *Wunderbar German Bologna* is so tasty, at least in my opinion. And at about $4/lb at Walmart, sliced really thinly, I eat it often bc I enjoy it. I've never fried it though. Somehow, hot bologna doesn't sound appetizing to me.
Oddly I hate bologna (Vienna sausages taste like bologna to me too!).. but I love liverwurst! Beans set off my IBS something fierce....I used to LOVE baked beans.
Hey hey Lindy 🥰, all smart ",frugal" ways of living 👍🏾. Looking forward to seeing ur new jacket.
I actually have Terry's grandmother's sewing machine. They definitely don't make them like they used to 😉.

Same here … hate baloney ( bologna) too. Taste is repulsive to me . 😅😅😅
I love your videos I don’t comment but I am 6”3 and live in a car! I need to get more frugal!
I only eat 1 meal a day and then a snack before bed. Plus I buy any meat (on sale) in bulk and put some in the freezer. If 6 pork chops in the pack I put 3 in the freezer. We buy more on sale items now.

Before you turn your jacket into a pattern, please try washing it in borax, without any soap in the washer. I have done this with bath towels when they had a lot of soap build up and it really works to restore softness.

Best wishes to all.

good idea about the lard.
Great tips. I've never used cast iron. I would like to.
Grandma always remark3d that during the 2nd war she handmade margarine with lard and yellow dye. It was part of the rations.
Isn't that called OLIO? (Oleo?)

I'm so glad!
I grew up on fried baloney sandwiches. It is still one of my favorites. Deli baloney, yes.
I have the same kind of sleeping jacket and I absolutely love it! Here's a tip to make it as soft and fluffy as almost new---
At the laundromat, wash it in warm water and then pour literally a half gallon ($3.29) of ordinary *WHITE VINEGAR* into the washer, half at the rinse cycle to get *ALL* the soap rinsed out, and the other half *IN THE FINAL RINSE CYCLE.*
Dry it with a few dryer wool balls on medium heat (and no vinegar smell will get cooked into the fabric!) and I promise you, you will not be disappointed!
You can then use a cup of the white vinegar in the final rise from then on.
The minerals in the water and left over soap makes the fabric less soft. The *FINAL* rinsing it in the vinegar makes all the difference!
Will this work for sherpa blankets that are no longer soft?
🥰

Yes. I make a curry pot pie
I hope you & Marley are keeping cool, as best as possible. Take care!
I have a similar jacket I got at Ross last year for only $11. It's cheaper than what you can make it for. It keeps me so warm. So check out Ross starting late summer.
Ok
Lard and crisco makes things taste sooo much better. 😊. Do you make many sweets ? Hope you’re feeling better.
No but I need to start.
Miss Lindy please keep cool girl everyone loves you ,, have a great day .....
Love you and take care Lindy!!!
Thanks! 😆
Marley just had to have her say LOL
Hi Lindy
Hope you are having a good day today. I dont either. Have a great weekend you and Marley
Put a half cup of vinegar in your laundry and it will come out soft!
Your hair looks great like that!!
Oh thank you!
Love you lindy
Marley is on guard! We used Crisco or the generic form of it. We used bacon grease too in South Jersey.
Love the frugal videos.
I'm interested in a video on sewing by hand.
I eat more rice and potatoes and less meat to save on groceries. ❤️
We were brought up on lard
My grandad used to get the bacon fried in it then the kids a slice of bread who mopped up the remains
Stay cool, Lindy.
Fried bologna sandwiches with ketchup. Yummy. Stay cool and safe 🤗
I love watching you and seeing your still doing well 💖
❤
A peddle singer my granny sewed all the time it will mean more if you make it on leg power!! Right On
Back 45 50 years ago I used to love fried bologna sandwiches.. .nowdays I have not found an edible bologna....
Ooo *Wunderbar German Bologna* is so tasty, at least in my opinion. And at about $4/lb at Walmart, sliced really thinly, I eat it often bc I enjoy it. I've never fried it though. Somehow, hot bologna doesn't sound appetizing to me.
Soak you coat in fabric softener over night
What about fried name brand spam with mustard from dollar tree really good, please, more frugal and depression ideas . Thanks.
Be careful washing the rags you remove nail polish with nail polish remover is FLAMABLE😮
Oddly I hate bologna (Vienna sausages taste like bologna to me too!).. but I love liverwurst! Beans set off my IBS something fierce....I used to LOVE baked beans.
