I've been working about 45 years, Lindy. I remember an interview where I was asked to stand up, turn around, walk and come back. This was a desk job, lol. Times have certainly changed. Drinks at lunch, partying with the boss' .. those days are OVER, but there's still favoritism everywhere.
My second job was in a downtown (used to be a safe area) store that seemed to sell everything. Same scenario stand up, turn around from the owner, an elderly man. I got the job, but had neglected to tell him I was married and pregnant. I think I was let go when I started to show, but we had moved away and had one car--remember those days? I took him to work on the days I shopped. What a different time!
Unfortunately, most bosses just have to go to people's Instagram to get all the thrills they want, nowadays. It's just switched from being exploited. To exploiting yourself.
Whew, yup had a few of those bosses from H E Double hockey sticks! I was a single parent & after putting myself thru college i landed a job close to home at a financial adviser/cpa firm. It was small, only about 7 of us. The boss's wife would search our desk drawers while we were at lunch for imagined stolen items. The tantrums he'd throw when no clients were there (after i left, learned later that he was diagnosed with dementia) I personally don't celebrate xmas & i was the only one required to work on xmas day. I was salaried, so no holiday pay. Really needed the income & would spend every lunch break at the unemployment office job hunting. Then, while working at our local community college as a receptionist/switchboard operator, the lady that would take my place while i went to lunch was always 10 mins late, so i was 10 mins late getting back so i could have my full 1/2 hr break. She reported me to my supervisor, who happened to be the dean & needless to say my performance review didn't go well & i wasn't even permitted to defend myself. The day i got married, i quit there!

I started working when I was 16 as a car hop too. No roller skates though. One day I spilled a man’s lunch in his brand new car. I quit after that and went to work for a 5 & dime store. Went to college and worked in banking, a few months as a teller which I didn’t like either so I was able to transfer to another department. I worked in banking until 1992 when a big bank bought us out and laid us all off. I moved back to my hometown to take care of my elderly mom, started a coffee shop, sold it after 8 years and worked as a bookkeeper until age 78. I’m 79 now and finally enjoying not working!

Wow! so happy to have found you on the first day of my 76th year! (Yesterday was my birthday)...I can so deeply relate to how things were back in the 60's. My first job was babysitting for 50cents per hour. Had an ongoing job for parents who bowled...thought I was rich making $1.50 per week. Never given an allowance because I had an income...still did plenty of chores though! So many jobs over the years. First 'real' job was for House of Fabrics, where the touchy-feely manager had to show us how to run the fabric through a measuring gizmo...and we were reprimanded for lost inches! I hope you'll do more of these stories! You have a BEAUTIFUL face and gorgeous hair! Thank you! Sending you love and hugs from rainy/stormy California redwoods.
I’ve allowed myself out of fear be abused in my career a few times. It’s horrible. I was a single mom, no child support, my ex went underground and ran. He worked off the books and moved out of state. My supervisor found out and used my fear, I was young, to control my behavior at work. He’d say things like “how will YOU ever get a job like this again?” I worked for Santa Barbara Education. BJ and his cohort H, were horrible, horrible people. Mean and abusive. Life circumstances got me out of that situation, I finally had enough I didn’t give a F***, if we didn’t have $ anymore. It actually affected my kids anyway. At 59, I truly wish I could go give the young me a big hug. Tell her she was worthy. So anyway, I made myself over employable. My resume is amazing now. Semi-retired and loving it. I’ll never go back to that situation again. ❤ love you road sis ❤😊
My first real job was at Kentucky Fried Chicken, the manager was a raging alcoholic. He screamed and hollered, and told us to pick up chicken off the floor and serve it anyway. I was only 16 and had no idea what to do. He made us all cry and was a horrible man!
I am a year older than you Lindy and I definitely remember how different things were in the workplace. Bosses flirted with their female employees and it was just the way it was. I also remember having to multi task at work. If something needed doing, everyone pitched in to help. Something that was really done right back in those days was the training. I don't know if this was true for everyone back then but every job that I was hired for included lots of training. You weren't just thrown into the job untrained. As I got older, I noticed that employers became more lax about training. Good training meant a better work experience and better for the company because you made less mistakes and you took pride in your work. Dress codes were the standard back then. In offices, women wore dresses or skirts and blouses with nylons and high heels. Men wore suits. I just found your channel and subscribed.
My wife, who is now 69, was an accountant at a Sherwin Williams in Jacksonville, Florida back in the early 1980's. She loved the job and still talks about the wonderful people who worked there.
Great stories!! My first job as a 'car hop' (no roller skates) while still in HS ended in my being fired...for no reason at all. First the boss fired my co-worker without any cause or reason...a few days later, it was my turn. I was devastated and cried all the way home! I enjoyed that job so much, too. Yes, they could do as they pleased.
@@mufnpuffflora5719 I get what you're saying...the system itself was ugly...when I got into office jobs as my 'career', they would still be able to 'getya', but it had to be done undercover. Now evil doesn't bother to hide anymore.
Amazingly true. Men WERE allowed to get away with so much back then. Every job I had working in an office, involved a male boss trying to get close and personal on the desk, under the desk, in the boardroom, in the lift, in the car, in front of everyone at those xmas parties and no consequences.
My grandmother was working in real estate in the 1970s to help put her kids through college. While seeking to become an agent a one company, she was told she should just go home and make her husband a nice dinner. My mother only had one bad experience at a job that she told me about. I had a few harassment experiences. I never reported and it still bothers me. I’m glad things are changing and women don’t have to fear being fired for reporting. Of course, there are still places where they get away with it and other things have gone backwards lately so…
I reporfed a boss at a Trump property who was spying on me with camera from hone and calling to let me know that he saw me up a ladder or what have you. HR told me there's no rule to control bosses from being assholes but she didnt consider it harrassment? The lil girl who took my place told her daddy that boss was doing same to her and Daddy got that boss fired.
My experience working 54yrs for different companies has taught me, workers are just cannon fodder, rags to mop the floor, expendable, and the more you work and took pride in your work, the harder they push you to get the most out of you. Larger companies would have team building exercises, what a load of shit they were, just to please the upper management. As a worker you had no opinion as far as management was concerned, just keep your mouth shut and do your job, unless you had a suggestion how to lower manpower with increased productivity, yep we had brown noses who took every opportunity to smile at management, back stabbers, who wanted to climb the ladder over you, lovely, I’m so glad to be retired. I’ll bet you’re happy it’s behind you now.😊
What a crazy boss!! My bosses pale next to yours. At a laundry mat I worked at- the boss would come unglued if the AC was below 85 degrees-he would come in the laundry screening at me " I'll fire you ass if you turn that thermostat down) 😳 Then I worked a restaurant where the manager & a waitress would be "dancing" behind any closed door available. My daughter has some crazy boss stories as well. Thanks for the story & the memory jog 👍🤗💞
You are such a trooper! Admire your tenacity and your ability to continue your journey with a smile even when things get tough. Praying for your financial breakthrough and a nice place to call your own. You deserve the best! God be with you.
I just subscribed after watching your video on another channel & chose this as my first "read". BRAVO! I'm turning 70 this year & your story really kicked in my many memories of the times I worked for utter and absolute psychotic jerks. I have had so many jobs, that the SSA printout was too long for the representative to believe that I had actually had so many jobs! I will happily support your channel because you are the genuine survivor who can laugh about the past instead of just being an angry mean old lady about it!🤣
Yes, things have certainly changed since the 60’s. I loved hearing about your experiences. You handled Yule(?) a lot better than I would have. I’m so happy your channel is now monetized. The Lord bless you !!!
Ty for ur stories, oh they do still to an extent...mine was due to prejudice 🇵🇷 I was of tan color though not as dark as my son, but a tiny bit more than all white women. They even told me "Oh, you know how that is right" they say but when I was placed on higher position then all of them they conspired to fire me. At the Bosses office I had proof of my whereabouts and workload completed and done..even my supervisor was amazed. I was a secretary in charge of many offices so I kept things journalized for my sake..thank goodness never knew they were conspiring.🙏🙌🙏oc course they all felt stupid and sdo did the Director of that huge office.
Bernadette they did it to every color. I was raised in a Japanese household and saw what they said and did to my stepmother. I didn't have a degree. Wait till you hear some of my other stories about how women were treated. You know we had to work 3 times as hard as the men.
What a beautiful lady you are! ❤️ Praying for you and hoping to become someone who supports elderly nomads in some way. I've started by subscribing. Rock on dear lady!
I like the story time. It’s cathartic to me when I speak to the camera, but listening to other people is relaxing too. Some people. 😂 If I had a van I would join you for a few weeks be your camera person. ❤ Stay safe.
Temper tantrums like that don't go so well anymore. Terrible! I have heard the old saying "There ain't not future in working" I think I understand that now that most of it is behind me. Bless you and your plans!
Thanks for the stories of you work experience. Younger women don’t necessarily understand that there was a time when sexual harassment wasn’t taken seriously. One of my first jobs in an office (I was 23) was for a company that helped ex-offenders get jobs. My office was a satellite office with only four employees total. I was the receptionist. The only man in the office, Andy, was supposed to be out trying to find jobs for our clients but he really didn’t try. Anyway, he would come in in the morning and say things to me like “I dreamed of you last night and in my dream, you were fantastic”. He would touch me and find reason to press his body against mine. One day, our supervisor came up from the main office. He asked if anyone wanted to go get coffee. I said I did. So, while sitting in the coffee shop, I started telling him about how Andy was saying and doing inappropriate things to me. My supervisor’s response was to tell me he had recently seen a documentary and how it said how Latin men (his words) see themselves as the Don Juans of the world. That was it. I finally took care of him. I was sitting at my desk and he kissed me on top of my head. I took the papers I had in my hand and started smacking him with them and saying he was gross. He never bothered me after that.

Hi Lindy! Do you ever get up to Pennsylvania? There's a neat little drive-in that's still in business along Rte 22/322 in Duncannon PA, just north of Harrisburg. They don't use roller skates, but do have great car window service! They're only open on weekends, and only seasonally, but have some really good ice cream, burgers and BBQ. I manage to catch them open every once in a while in my travels for work. If you get up that way, you should stop in and give them some tips! 😄 Anyway, thanks for you wonderful vids, and God bless you!
Oh my goodness! My first job was with A&W Drive Inn as a carhop when I was 17! Though I was not on roller skates since there was still snow and ice on the ground. 😂 Another job I had was with 7-Eleven where the manager tried to fire me for stealing. I immediately went to the supervisor in the local office and stated my case against my manager. The supervisor took my side and I was transferred to another store where I stayed for ten years until the company started to franchise all the stores. I kept transferring to corporate stores until there were none. I have regrets because I did not use my profit-sharing money to buy a franchise. I have many should-haves and could-haves, but hind sight is 20-20. 😊
My first job after high school, I was a mail clerk at a large liquor warehouse. Twice a day, I would deliver or pick up the mail from desk to desk. Whenever I arrived at this married man's desk, he would say things that made me blush and nervous. At that time, there were no rules regarding sexual harassment. I endured it for several years until quit and attended university. Being young, I did not know how to handle it. You are a good story teller Lindy!
I bought an $11.50 sturdy mylar blanket at Walmart, which I put under my bedding. One entire winter sleeping toasty warm per blanket. Sounds crinkly, which is now a beautiful sound to me. I slept on an airbed in Texas, with just a fitted sheet over it. It sucks the heat from your body and helps on broiling hot nights. Of course a spritzer with water helps too. I have a 1 gallon Sawyer water filter, after 4 years, I replaced the filter for $18. I filter rainwater in it. Best of luck to you. New subscriber.
Wow the way it used to be. I’m 65 so I really enjoyed them. That was a big reason I went into self employment. That didn’t make me rich either but it got me out of some ridiculous environments.
I have worked with a few people who unfortunately have some injury and expect me to carry the load. They say they dont want to be home bored. So then they just use the job to socialise sitting on thier but while I do the work. Very lazy people
Yes! I dealt with all the same stuff! Also worked in banking for years. Worked my butt off, worked overtime and didn't write it up, sexual harassment, threats, being passed over for a position because the boss's girlfriend wanted it. Yep..we did it all!
I just happened upon your channel and I thoroughly enjoy it. Not everyone can tell a story, but you definitely have the "story telling" gift. I'll be checking out previous videos & looking forward to seeing you in the future.
Just subscribed to your channel so looking forward to watching & listening to all your stories. I'm 10 years younger but remember how different office was to now. Everybody called each other Mr or Mrs or Miss. Very formal. The bosses watched every minute you worked, took lunch etc. Today my bosses wander in whenever they feel like it. Mind you technology has also changed the way we work. I think I work more hours but then the industry I work in has some very pleasant advantages. Over the years I have received some great opportunities like going to concerts, conferences, etc. Yep I've been blessed when I look back at almost 50 years of work. Only had off 4 months when my son was born but 4 years with my daughter. I'm a plodder....just keep going - not one for climbing the ladder to management. See you in the next video & stay safe xxx
My overall takeaway from working in and with "teams" in retail, corporate, education and especially government is 'there are no ethics in business'. Great stories, Lindy! It's so interesting to have these memories to share! It's so different like every 5 year or so, there's a shift for the better for most workers, because we can see how abuse is defined now versus just a few short years ago! It's fascinating to observe our society change!
My father taught me to never walk looking down, to never look for handouts when you can work, to never count the small change or gamble. One day while on my way to work, I went into my bank to cash my paycheck. The teller gave me some change and large bills, I only count the bills. When I got to work my boss was furious. He'd gotten a call from the teller. She said I took a quarter. My boss interrogated me. Being deeply religious, both of us, I agreed to give her the quarter shed asked for, but explained to my boss how it happened. Keep in mind, I managed his store, the accounts, orders, everything. I was hurt and insulted that she would call my work, when that was my bank. I went in there regularly. I talked to the bank manager when I went back in to give her the quarter, which was her mistake and she should have paid it from her purse then asked me for it later when I went in. They fired her. People are amazing and incredible, like our Govt., not taking better care of our elderly and homeless but giving housing, food and medical care to illegals that come here knowing they will be fed n cared for. Our own must come first.
I agree re governments not taking care of elderly. I'm an Aussie and its similar over here. Immigrants & refugees get first in for housing & those that have paid taxes for years can be months & months before even getting a look in. Unfortunately times are going to get harder.
Your right about how the work place has changed over the years. My first job as an adult (18 or over) my manager he was a stickler and he would throw some of the biggest tizzy fits throwin things to the floor, they don’t dare to that today. I was a manager at one place and the head man one day came up behind me and kissed me on the side of my neck and grabbed a hand full of my backside, let your boss do that today and someone is 0n the unemployment line. Men have always thought that they have the right to do as they please. Good talk tonight.
Amazing story, is that what you call the good old days? I think I would have had a heart attack watching that man kicking the stuff off the desk. Of course that wouldn’t happen nowadays with the invention of cell phones, it would be recorded. Thanks for the story!
So many changes over the years in the workplaces. Too many stories to tell. Thank you for sharing yours. I think all us 70+ yr old women who worked outside the home can relate. Blessings!
Fascinating to listen to your stories from your working life. It's these interactions, good & bad, that make otherwise unremarkable work-interludes memorable. Or the stuff of nightmares. As a Mr Average guy, at work or on the train to work, I'd occasionally get instances of "opposite gender" interest which was uncomfortable as in a committed *family* relationship at the time. Do women find this easier to brush off & avoid it affecting your work ? I never got fired over it, but it can make for awkwardness when the "interest" is from a boss-figure.
oh Lindy! I feel less alone when I hear your work stories...I have had some bosses like you! Totally relate to being fired for NOT sleeping with the boss....waaay too many bosses coming up with reasons for me to bring something to their house when wife is in Europe etc. They have no shame
NEW SUB!! 🤩That first employer was waiting for you to slip up so they could fire you for asking for more money. It really wasn't about the dime situation. Jobs are just another way to keep the working class poor! I do hope you get a place to live in, but very soon you'll be in big company when the housing market crashes. That's another manipulated industry! But that's a whole other bucket of nails!🙏💖
You are so sweet! It sucks to say the workforce has not changed one bit! But the way you tell the story. So short but worth a million! Thank you for being you, and sharing that story ❤️
I worked as a receptionist at a bank. The chief loan officer didn’t like me. He was having affairs even though his wife and four kids came in to check on him all the time. I had an insistent caller, a woman, who kept calling and insisting to speak to him. I embarrassed him by interrupting his meeting by telling him this woman said it was an emergency. They made him loan Bank President as one of his first acts he fired me. At this bank there was another woman who conspired to kill her boyfriends wife. The boyfriend got prison time she did not. This was in 1990s this was the people I worked with most got their jobs because their parents owned shares of the bank. They came to work whenever they felt like it. I was constantly yelled at for not knowing where these people were or when they would show up. I was blamed for the bad phone equipment which needed constant rebooting. It was stressful working there.

It was the times we lived in.
I will happily support your channel because you are the genuine survivor who can laugh about the past instead of just being an angry mean old lady about it!🤣
Thanks for your awesome stories...better than anything on TV. God bless.
Thank you for your super thanks support LINDY
I love that that new boss carried that for years, and you still came out ahead! You are very interesting! Thank you!
Yes, things have certainly changed since the 60’s. I loved hearing about your experiences. You handled Yule(?) a lot better than I would have. I’m so happy your channel is now monetized. The Lord bless you !!!
Yes! Thank you!
Praying for you and hoping to become someone who supports elderly nomads in some way. I've started by subscribing. Rock on dear lady!
Thank you so much!
Hi Lindy! I'm new to ur channel and I must tell you I enjoy your channel a lot. You're so warm and welcoming.
Work sucks. I admire your positive attitude after working for so many years.
Your fan from Turkey👍❤👏
Love your stories. Thank you Lindy.
Thank you
I like the story time. It’s cathartic to me when I speak to the camera, but listening to other people is relaxing too. Some people. 😂
If I had a van I would join you for a few weeks be your camera person.
❤
Stay safe.
Glad you enjoyed
Thank you so much. I would like to say that stuff n ever happens now but it does. Keep these great pieces of history coming. Happy new year all.
Wow! Is that a picture of you? Stunning!!! ❤ Great stories. Thanks for sharing
Temper tantrums like that don't go so well anymore. Terrible!
I have heard the old saying "There ain't not future in working" I think I understand that now that most of it is behind me.
Bless you and your plans!
It’s terrible to see that in some ways some things have NOT changed but glad to see other things have changed in a positive way.
One guy patted me on the butt and I punched him in the stomach. Never did it again.
@@l.a.v.alindysawesomevanadv3428 - Good for you!

I’m doing the same. Went back to your first post. Now on ones dated 6 months. I even watch the ads bc my understanding is that help with $$.
Thank you so much.
I could see a future for you on the speaking circuit. You tell a great story.
Sadly, bad behavior is still a big thing. I have only been fired once, but I have quit many jobs! Lol fortunately my current job is one of the best and my boss is really wonderful!
Great stories Lindy! 🌹Red
Thanks Red
I love your storytelling and you are such a sweetheart. I think it’s pretty awesome that you have a yt channel. You will get a lot of subscribers with the stories you tell. It will help you out financially too. Imagine being fired over a dime! Good grief. Sorry about the prick that harassed you and you getting fired by him later. Keep up all the great work with your van and and stories and stay safe
Anyway, thanks for you wonderful vids, and God bless you!
Pennsylvania has quite a few drive-ins. Out little town is between Altoona & Johnstown and the Bar-Ann Drive-In is still going.
I’m new to you channel. You are my new favorite person! I’m disabled and I’m preparing myself to be in the same situation as you ❤
My first job after high school, I was a mail clerk at a large liquor warehouse.
Always one
I bought an $11.50 sturdy mylar blanket at Walmart, which I put under my bedding. One entire winter sleeping toasty warm per blanket. Sounds crinkly, which is now a beautiful sound to me.
I slept on an airbed in Texas, with just a fitted sheet over it. It sucks the heat from your body and helps on broiling hot nights. Of course a spritzer with water helps too.
I have a 1 gallon Sawyer water filter, after 4 years, I replaced the filter for $18. I filter rainwater in it.
Best of luck to you.

Thank you for commenting
Wow the way it used to be. I’m 65 so I really enjoyed them. That was a big reason I went into self employment. That didn’t make me rich either but it got me out of some ridiculous environments.
Love your stories. I have a few of my own. Take Care.
I have worked with a few people who unfortunately have some injury and expect me to carry the load. They say they dont want to be home bored. So then they just use the job to socialise sitting on thier but while I do the work. Very lazy people
I enjoyed your stories and your nails are beautiful❤❤❤❤
Nothing wrong with a plodder.
Bless you. I’m so sorry.
Don't be sorry. I am content with my life.
I love hearing your stories.
[paused] Omigosh I LOVVVVE story time! Eeeps! So excited! [unpaused]
Yes it is. My whole life was about fairness on the job. Treat everyone equal and fair. No favoritism
Sweet Lindy-I am 74 and can totally relate to your stories. Keep going girl! You are awesome💕
Thank you so much!
Your stories are so great. Your so gifted. Your a hard worker too. 😊❤
I just read that Sherwin Williams just closed down all their stores and went out of business! Thanks for sharing your work experience!
Oh wow!
Not in Florida. I just picked out paint and this is the paint used on the outside and will be used inside
Fascinating stories! Thanks for sharing your experiences. Hopefully, things have changed!
I hope so!
I really enjoyed your story, Liddy - brings me back! You are so awesome!! 😊
I love your stories ❤️
So many changes over the years in the workplaces. Too many stories to tell. Thank you for sharing yours. I think all us 70+ yr old women who worked outside the home can relate. Blessings!
So true!
Thankyou Lindy for your stories❤️🙂
Beautiful being
You are so kind
Wow interesting story’s 🌼 wishing Gods blessings to you 🙏🏼
Love this. :)
You are so sweet! It sucks to say the workforce has not changed one bit! But the way you tell the story. So short but worth a million! Thank you for being you, and sharing that story ❤️
This was a good video!
Thank you
Great stories. 😮😮 yes a different time back then. But you’re still smiling. ❤
Brilliant story teller x x
There are many stores to be told about working conditions at that time.
Thanks!
Thank you for your super thanks support LINDY
Your story is amazing. Thanks for sharing.
You had some guts. Good for you 👍
Great stories. I enjoyed them. I’ve had some strange jobs too. Learned something from every one of them that I use in my everyday life.

A great story teller. You should make more of this kind of video. ❤️❤️ From Toronto.
We’ve come a LONG wAy baby!!
Oh yes we have.
You being fired at bank was probably due to speaking up about having to take up someone else's workload . They pounced on the 10 cent theft moment .
My mom was a carhop .always enjoy your stories ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for your story Lindy. It made me smile.
I'm so glad!
