Years back, I spent an afternoon at Serj’s house interviewing him for a music publication (a perk of my former job). I often get asked who the nicest artist is to work with… Serj is my first answer every time. The man was extremely kind, welcoming, and respectful. He was without a doubt, the most down-to-earth artist I had the pleasure of interviewing.

That is because NOTHING HAS CHANGED.
“There’s a lot of people who have jobs that are more difficult than ours, and we appreciate them.” That’s what I’ve always loved about SOAD. They always treated their music as a hobby instead of the next artist that claims “music has always been my passion/dream”. They’re a very self aware group and it’s why they can headline any festival
This is absolute facts
This is a fairly common thing for popular bands to say. I've heard Metallica say it and SOAD loves Metallica. No one wants to hear a rock star complain about their life.
Serg had a million dollar software company before soad
Groupdynamics makes things easier. Depends on the artists way of life. Of course is the work of the medical doctor harder and full of responsibility. The other artists should also say what they feel. Even if them makes them appear lightheaded
yeah... my hobby doesn't pay me millions of dollars and afford me the ability to live in a mansion...
They definitely roasted them. I can somewhat relate. I met Serj a few years ago when he was meeting fans and promoting his coffee. I waited a couple hours with my daughter and it was getting late. The only thing he told me was that my daughter looked too tired to be out that late. 😭😭😭😭 we took a picture and I walked away feeling so judged. He was not wrong tho lol
Perfect opportunity for him to let you know that your daughter wouldn't look so tired if she had been drinking his coffee lol

“If you depend on perceptions to direct what you're gonna do then you're gonna be perceiving yourself throughout other people's eyes rather than through your own.“ SOAD educating society on a higher level of awareness. What else is there to say other than: BE YOURSELF AND ACT LIKE IT.

John Dolmayan earned a place as my secret hero of the band:
He is the actual smart & classy one, using insults like "good consumer" and always being down to earth. He possibly got the strongest f-the-system attitude of them all but you hardly can tell because he is so calm & reasonable about it.
Plus he wears a R+ hood, confirming that my two favourite bands listen to each others music!
What's interesting is how his political views don't really line up with the rest of the band, yet him and Serj, who is perhaps the furthest in the opposite direction politically, are literally family.
@@randygerson It just shows that common goals/love crush political boundaries. We are all humans in the end.

I think Daron is a spoiled brat. He’s like that guy that hates everything and whines all the time.
@@stuartewoldt1513 ironic
@@stuartewoldt1513 Daron Jr?
Daron has always been a prick - in his blood. As long as I can remember him - since high school! But that's part of what it takes to make it in a cut-throat industry.
Of course YOU would think that, Stuart.
Never watched SOAD interviews before.. drummer's presence definitely inspires the creativity and provocation of the entity that is System of a Down
Idk if "Outclassed" would be the word I'd use here lol.
why not, the band went from being trapped in interviews to answer what they want, I think it's a proper word to describe it..It's even smarter the way they did, making fun of themselves AND the interviewer while remaining friendly !
@@Tyreus1 Maybe I'd say outsmarted. They say things that are thought provoking and actually of substance, even when the interviewers ask shallow questions. I wouldn't say outclassed because of the mannerisms they put on display. I say that regarding Daron especially. I think John is probably what I'd call the classiest member of the band.
@@Kid12Ghost oh ok, well I agree but I think it's also true by default, Daron being way more the extravert ! And maybe Daron had to answer more of those stupid questions, maybe it's the teenage fan in me.finding him excuses 😁
It's more like trolled, I remember the interview with Juliya C...
Yeah, I’d say outsmarted. John was the only one who had any class during interviews
I have a lot of respect for John. Grounded but articulate in his rage. You can tell how much he influences the band.

He brought up a good point, I don't think anybody can debate that. Was it classy because he didn't say bj?
That hit different ngl
Who is fellatio or is that just Daron having fun
That's good stuff
Superman told me
Daron is that buddy you had in high school that was fun at parties, but you never wanted to go anywhere in public with.
The guy can be so ultra cringe unless everyone is anything but sober.
He seemed like a dick in this video. Making the interviewer feel bad for asking a question about his shoes and then making fun of the guy's hair in a really arrogant way. And then making fun of that woman interviewer's question and refusing to answer it even though it was a perfectly valid question.
Agreed
Dude's a control freak too. There's a reason why they had to beg Serj to do Mesmerize/Hypnotize. Those two albums sound the same, which is fine as a double album. But every SOAD album has a completely different sound. Now go listen to Scars on Broadway, it sounds the same. And then if you listen to their 2020 songs Protect the Land and Genocidal Humanoidz, they literally sound like something that would be on Mesmerize/Hypnotize or Scars on Broadway. That's not to say they aren't good songs, they are. But Serj doesn't like to sit on the same sound, and Daron has been in a rut for 15 years.
He was very high on drugs but, yeah, agree with you
stating on high times magazine that you'll get high on his blood was funny as hell
Love how John Dolmayan gets no love from the fan base, he's like the george harrison of SOAD and yet he dominates most of these interviews.
He was super kind and respectful, after watching this I think he is now my favorite band member
If he’s George, who is Ringo?
John is one of the most baddest drummers. His skills alone. Not to mention his cool ass comic themed drum kits!
I wonder if its him being a Trumpist, all the lyrics were very leftist, I don't know if he agreed with them at the time or just went along with it and disagreed privately.

Out trolled the media. not out classed
Well, some of the answers are quite classy, contrary to the questions/statements of the interviewers. Since trolling seems to be exclusively motivated by getting an emotional reaction, i have a hard time agreeing with this term. But besides that, if we call it trolling, then it definitely was in an outsmarting and outclassing fashion.
@@diggie9598 For the most part.
Daron is 100% trolling though.
@@cyanidefilledcandy2 nah look at his statement on manson he wasn't trolling at all
And a and a and a and a and a and a
Proof once again that so many musicians are ahead of their time.
Their cds used to live in my cold player growing up and hearing their sound evolve in my mind over the years is proof that their music transcends and aids us through time.
I’ll never forget the bike ride to getting that toxicity album. Felt like a diamond 💎 in my hand. And it was. 💿.
I'm not sure if they "out-classed" anyone. They might have been "smartasses", but being "classy" is NOT one of their virtues.
Totally see what you are saying, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it isn't one of THEIR virtues either though.
John was classy, respectable and harmonious in every single one of those clips. Serj and Shavo were totally okay. It was just Davon who seems to be so frustrated, not just with life around him, but apparently with parts of himself as well (consciously or - more likely - unconsciously) that he feels the need to be as abnoxious as possible to whomever and just spew poison for whatever reasoning seems to be driving this inner toxicity.
@@dominikrisse8099 even daron matured and his attitude is nice nowadays
@my dad beats me Surely plays a role here, but then why do the other 3 not act that way? It has a lot to do with personality and Davon is/was truly messed up in the head. I don't blame him either. We all have our reasons to be the way we are and react the way we do. There is "sticking it to the Man" though and there is "sticking it to the Man, but I see the Man in every other person I encounter and treat them badly even though they might not deserve it". Big difference.
@my dad beats me Again the question: Why don't the other guys of the band act like that? Why doesn't everybody? Most men behaving like that is a vast over-generalization with no empiric back-up whatsoever. Most people wanting to be left alone as well. We are social creatures. We just want to be left alone, if we fall into the trap of viewing the minority of assholes in the world as the majority, because they are louder, ergo there seem to be more of them. I am not of the generation you talk about (and even if I were it wouldn't matter). I have been treated badly my fair share of times in my life, but made the conscious decision not to become like those people. The best revenge is not to become like your enemy. Doesn't mean I judge people who do become like that or view them as bad people either. Acceptance is the key to a fulfilled life. Simple thought experiment: Would the world be a better place if nobody would act like an ass? Yes. Would the world be a worse place if everybody did? Yes. Therefore every single person who chooses not to give in to their frustrations makes the world a slightly better place. Not saying you should adapt that attitude either. But if you want to give up faith on humanity, don't automatically assume, that everyone else should as well.
@my dad beats me "kinda stopped reading after that" -- if that is the case, then yes, you are better off using your energy on something else. No reason in having a discussion if you invest multiple minutes writing your view, but only a few seconds to read the other persons.
Terrible things happen, yes. Some trees have bad apples. Doesn't mean the whole tree is rotten.
"You can't control what people do". True. You can - however - control what you do. Don't underestimate the power of how that influences people around you and how the way they continue living their lives influences the people around them and so on.
Every person who doesn't give up on the world tips the scale ever so slightly to the point where nobody must feel the need to give up anymore.
"Pain is self-chosen." Couldn't agree more. So is pretty much everything else in our lives, including our attitude towards it : )
Serj seems enlightened ASF he doesn't just open his mouth just to spew
From 3:35 to 3:47 Serj says probably the wisest thing that i have heard this whole week, its a shame that most people cant think like this...

“10 times System of A Down didn’t give the answer the interviewer they expected”
3:36 Serj dispensing straight wisdom right there
I love Daron he's so chaotic. Like a cat just pushing shotglasses off a ledge just because.
Cats push objects off tables and counters and then observe, to see if a mouse or other creature pops out and runs in fear. Its a predatory tactic.
Cats themselves are reactive animals. They dont put as much thought into things as peope do.
So yeah i would say Daaron is similar, going through the motions to see what happens.
They're pretty smart guys, they just don't like being taken too serious when it's unnecessary💣
they are idiots who hide behind a façade of big words to try to make people think they are smarter than they really are
@@danielpaquet3963 STUPID people don't study at the university and they don't achieve anything big in they're life. I think they're smart, you can't change my mind.

@@mirandapanda5439 exactly, like they clearly have a message in their music. Why refuse to discuss it in interviews?

1:52 bro knew how to separate the sides of people. beautifully explained. i fw this guy
That first interview is worth watching in its entirety. That woman and her crew tried to take that interview more seriously than it should have been and watching the band troll them is hilarious.
Never seen the full interview but seemed like daron was just being an ass. In that interview he mocked her question and you claim it’s because she was taking the interview too seriously but then when the male reporter asked a lighthearted question about his shoes he immediately began insulting him trying to make him uncomfortable. Others in the comments said that the male reporter deserved it because he asked a stupid/superficial question to such an influential band. Seems like fans are grasping to excuse Daron’s rude behavior. The only one who wasn’t rude at all in this was John.
Jeez, it looks to me that these journalists are simply doing their job. I've seen the whole interview with Juliya...Daron had the nerve to accuse her of being stuck up just because of the success of her show. Meanwhile there were four multi millionaires sitting in that room and it's a safe bet to assume Juliya wasn't one of them. She wouldn't jump on stage to mess up a live set, so why is it okay to sabotage her interview? Anyone who applauds trolling is a tool.
I applaud trolling and ribbing when its warranted. Example: the now-infamous Henry Rollins busting everyone's balls interviews and Mike Patton's entire career. From what I have heard from a lot of people that were in bands around the time, no one really liked Juliya that much in general. I dunno if it was behind the scenes stuff that turned people off or if people thought she was a poser or what
this video confirms what I have loved about them all along. They want you to think and use your brain to figure out what they're music represents. They are who they are, and I personally love them and their music.
These fellas are pretty straight forward and, aside from the occasional cheeky answer, they are honest and forthright. Interviewers need to be better at their jobs and dig deeper into the history and personalities of a band before they formulate their list of questions. Sloppy journalism.
Nardwuar. No better Journalist in my opinion regarding questions that seriously help you get to know the artist. Highly recommend him if you haven't already seen his interviews before.
