He also says in From Eden "Honey, you're familiar Like my mirror years ago". And if we are to assume the narrator is the Serpent in the Garden of Eden then it is Satan saying these things. Satan was a fallen angel. He is calling her an angel and I just love it so much.
Another layer to the NFWMB lyric. Do you know about shillelaghs? They are walking sticks/stealth bludgeoning weapons traditionally made from blackthorn, named from its place of origin, a little village in Wicklow. Wicklow is where he was from and where he still resides. I've seen how they choose and make these very popular sometimes kitschy Irish souvenirs. The very traditional ones made from blackthorn, they specifically search for, a special branch that would be well suited. It really adds to the sentiment that he wants to be her chosen one, the one she fells specifically for her purpose, also falling for her. Then he wants to be held by her as her support and also her secret weapon. And ultimately burn her enemies, burn with her enemies, destroy them and also destroy any evidence of her involvement and weapon.
Wow wow WOW! That is so fascinating. I love how deep Hozier lore runs and how connected to and knowledgable he is about his homeland. Thanks so much for sharing that absolute gem!
The youtube algorithm knows me so well! Also Hozier's ~ spicier ~ lyrics are so so good as well, they also feel like worship/admiration rather than objectifying
The whole of Work Song has my whole utter heart. I want to be lobed by that whole song. “Heaven and hell were words to me”, “she gives me toothaches just from kissing me”, “no grave can hold my body down, i’ll crawl home to her”. All of it! The love he shows in that song holds so much love that its almost painful, and being AFAB and the pain we have built into us (peep the Fleabag reference), him showing his love with hints of pain shows how he understands our nature. I love our lil forest daddy❤
My favorite hozier lyric has to be from In a Week- "I have never known sleep like the slumber that creeps to me- I have never known color like this morning reveals to me." I love interpreting this as both literal and metephorical- literal being that the narrorator has never felt such peaceful sleep while with their lover, and never known the morning to be so beautiful when waking up next to the person you love. Then the metaphorical being, obviously, death taking hold and the morning of the beauty in the afterlife, or even acceptance of death. Hozier comparing his lovers so something as huge in scope and so personal as death literally makes me want to just quit college, run into the woods, and never come back lmao
Omg the running into the woods and never returning! I feel that so deeply haha. I absolutely love your perspective on the song. It’s made me fall in love with it all over again! Thanks so much for sharing ❤️
one aspect that i've always especially adored about hozier's lyricism is his explicitly admiring, even reverent attitude towards his lover's darkness. NFWMB is, of course a perfect example of that and another one is Nobody ("i'd be appalled if i saw you ever try to be a saint, i wouldn't fall for someone i thought couldn't misbehave"). he looks at the traditional ideal of love and romance as this clean, perfect, smooth-sailing experience where both parties are your typical goody-two-shoes, no-flaws type of deal (or, even worse, the image of a straight couple where the woman is the sweet, angelic one and the man is the big strong protector, retch) and he says "absolutely fuck ALL of that" and i love him so much for it. because real, deep love is never like that because real people aren't clean and perfect. real people have flaws and darkness and imperfections, and i for one have felt self-conscious about my imperfections for a lot of my life, especially in regards to romance and the question of whether anyone would ever love me despite my imperfections, like i'm sure a lot of us have. and then in walks hozier, our beautiful lyrical hero, and says "i don't love my partner _in spite_ of her darkness and her imperfections, i love her _because_ of them. and i'm also not the one who needs to protect her, she's a force to be reckoned with and that's fucking AWESOME." and that shifted my whole brain chemistry honestly. i absolutely love that man and his wonderful lyrics. and i also loved this video! amazing job! i'm now gonna go search for all of your hozier-related content because you scratched an itch in my brain and now I NEED MORE.
"know that I'd gladly be, the Icarus to your certainty, oh my sunlight, sunlight, sunlight." I'm seeing him live in Dublin in a couple of months, and I think my life will be firmly divided into a before and after across that experience, ahhh. Thank you for this video (and your other Hozier content) and for putting so much thought and effort into these.
I love the intro to Talk, Orpheus and Euridice is such a powerful story especially with the additional analysis given to it in recent times and Hozier does a really good job with it
I really like "feeling more human and hooked on her flesh, I lay my heart down with the rest at her feet/fresh from the fields all fetor and fertile/it's bloody and raw but I swear it is sweet", from angel of sweet death and the codeine scene. The way that he gives her his all, the deepest part of himself in utmost adoration and devotion. The way he writes it and transmits it. I've come to realise that his verses are the poetry that brings something crudely romantic to my life and helps me go through this gray life. It makes me feel loved and understood.
I could gush about As It Was for hours on end, but there are no words to explain how I feel about the song lyrically. It feels like the kind of love that you would feel between the night sky and the cool earth on a hot summer night. Like there is no way this man is not conversing with the forest spirits of Ireland because I’ve had very few experiences where a song literally feels like magic, but some how this man’s entire discography does it for me every time
Im going through your vids now after your recent hozier ep analysis and YES to the way that hozier writes about loving women. I think the biggest thing that makes me distrustful of love from men is that feeling of being a Woman to them and not simply a Human first. That scares me!! I don’t know if that makes sense but his music describes his lovers in such a way that humanizes them. I feel that they are equal beings in his music, both capable of great love, fear, destruction, lust, etc etc. Makes me feel seen as a human. I honestly think that’s why his music resonates so much with lesbians-he describes love & lust towards women in a way that sees beyond gender, it sees humanity. Sometimes I’m shocked that he as a man can write this way/see this way. It fills my heart!!
OH MY GOD! THIS!!! You've put it perfectly! I absolutely feel you on the distrust of love from men. I think the Hozier is the only person that keeps me holding on to the tiny bit of hope I have because surely he can't be the only person out of the almost 8 billion on this planet, right? 😅
"that feeling of being a Woman to them and not simply a Human first." You have given me a realization. Thank you for giving me the words to express what I didn't even realize I was feeling.
Yes, that quote from NFWMB made my jaw drop -that he would give his life to be of any significance to the person he loves. Also, what isn't said in Hozier songs is significant. Beyond Angel of Small Death, I can't recall any Hozier song giving a specific physical description, which leaves beauty open to many descriptions. And what does Hozier actually describe in his loves? Usually a rebellious soul or a fierceness. I'm so happy you mention Movement, a song that had me thinking about how moved I was by it for weeks. It feels a lot like Radiohead's Creep to me. They both start with this slow adoration. They both rise in tension with a comparison between the love interest and the self with the self lacking. Creep then erupts into this freefall of wailing self-hate and disgust. It turns away from the love interest, becoming self-absorbed. In comparison, the actor in Movement aligns with his love interest as the music brightens. I love the surprising rising of notes at that moment to deepen his lyrics, as if he is spiritually uplifted by following his love's lead. As gender isn't mentioned in this song, it can be about love between any people. It's clear that Hozier is happy to sing about love and not about specific genders and orientations. When I interpret Movement and other Hozier songs as sung by a man about a woman, they have a special power to me in the context of this time with the history through which I've lived. Women are encouraged to take a back seat to the men in our lives and, for heterosexual women, give more energy and respect to the men with whom we are romantically paired than we receive. In songs, in fiction, and in conversations, we are often seen as appendages and body parts and objects of perfection. It is astounding how effective the potion of potentially being seen and loved as whole and real and powerful feels.
Oh my god this was so wonderful to read. I'd never clocked on to the fact that Hozier rarely uses a physical description but you're so right! Such brilliant ideas and so perfectly worded. THANK YOU!
I'm so glad this video exists - it puts into words how deeply I wish to feel seen like the women Hozier writes about. One of my favourite demonstrations of this is the outro of As it Was, and in particluar: "And the nights were as dark as my baby And half as beautiful too" I remember hearing this year's ago, and appreciating how Hozier describes beauty in so many aspects of a person, including their darkness. Its so beautiful. Surrounded by the other lyrics of As it Was, you see so many traits that Hozier appreciates in his lover that are rarely highlighted in media. Someone who brings him heights of joy, who fights for him and what she believes in, someone who is a bright light. It makes the "manic pixie dream girl" trope fade into irrelevancy with the depth of this woman. I love it!!!
I’m so glad to have came across your channel. I love the videos you make. Hozier’s music is so unique and godlike. His voice is so beautiful. Thank you for creating this video. ❤️
Finding this channel made my day! It’s wonderful to see someone analysing hozier and his lyrics with the insight and reflection of someone who spends time thinking about every nuance that he tries to convey, and not only “first reactions”. It’s amazing to be able to privately compare theories and discover new meanings to his words!
Late to this video but new to your channel. My favorite love song of Hozier’s is “As It Was”. I see it as someone returning home after a long and difficult time away (a battle with addiction, maybe?), and saying ‘everything I have left after this hardship belongs to you, just as it was before I left’. Also this whole bit “The shape that I’m in now/You’re shaping the doorway/Make your good love known to me/Just tell me bout your day.” UGH! Perfection. To me it’s saying that no matter how much this journey has changed him, his lover is changing the shape of the doorway itself to fit him, to accept him home. And all he wants is to go home, sit down, and have her tell him about her day. To allow him back in to the calm, simple, domestic life he missed.
I absolutely love Hozier and I don’t have anyone to jab my jaws about it, I’m so happy I’ve found you, OMG 🫶🏽 honestly I don’t think there’s any other man so made for the female gaze, in the actual scenario, than him! It breaks my heart I’ll probably never see him live, cause he never includes Brazil in his tour’s 🥹
I'm now bingeing your hozier content after finding it tonight! ❤ a couple of my favourites from his already existing albums are from Shrike: The words hung above But never would form Like a cry at the final Breath that is drawn And Cherry Wine which has already been added in 😁👌 Sweet and right and merciful I'm all but washed In the tide of her breathing
The first time I heard NFWMB, it was shortly after I'd read Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. Hozier's much feels so devotional. Not like now, with kinder gods, but the awe struck faith of older, more tempestuous things.
(Although sprinkled throughout are more more human moments)
Couldn’t have said it better! ❤️
