When writing a graphic novel about large scale historical events, and real people, there are significant challenges to doing a good job. Here I outline some of the biggies, and outline some of my methods for dealing with them.

This book is like full self driving cars in the sense that every year, its the same number of years away
Little known fact you may want to include; Both Hannibal's and Scipio Africanus' mothers were named Martha.
And when they learn this they end their petty feud to fight off katana wielding spandous!
WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME
Holy damn, Lloyd... I had read on FB that you intended to upload a lot of videos this week, but it's pretty clear now that wasn't a word of a lie. Well done, sir!
FB?
+Abyssaljam Facebook I gues
Abyssaljam Facebook indeed.
Lloyd is a man of his words I guess.
LINDYBEIGE!!!!!
You should definitely have Skallagrim in the background of a battle throwing a pommel at someone.
MY GOD THIS WOULD BE LEGENDARY
plus you would appeal to skall's fans too ;)
My god - is that already that old.
It was used in a computer game.
It´s still not done
Lindy, you should make multiple books in a series. I would by them all.
But would you buy them tho?
Look at the Kickstarter page. There you'll see that it'll be at least 2 stories, because of the massive support they've gotten.
RentableElk sweeeeeeet!
Edit: Nevermind this comment which I can't delete, it'll be two books then!
But until the book (OK, the very long comic) is done, you won't know whether he is a good writer. He might just be shit. I mean, I hope not, but it might happen. So you will have to wait until it's done and, if you like it, then yes, by all means, BUY EVERYTHING HE EVER TOUCHES, OH MY GOD, YES LINDY!
What if you give him a unclear, mysterious personallity with clear goals . And let different people saying different and comflicting things about Hannabal. This will make story more interthing, because you can not fully trust anyone. You could give different hystorical interpertations about him to different characters in the novel, so the audiance has to find out who Hannibal in their own mind. We all make choices but in the end our choices make us ;)! Goodluck.
"I can't give him no personality, that'd be boring and who would care?" (2:36)
Don't worry Lindy. It worked with Sword Art Online.
They fixed that in the abridged version... ;D
Shots fired, but please direct some of those bullets to Attack On Titan.
*****
Or he can just have Hannibal scream a lot and pretend that its personality.
Patrick Frost Titties? If there's not titties i'm out.
I didn't know you were writing a graphic novel, that's really cool. I will definitely be interested in reading it when it's done.
...
Go to the Kickstarter page in the description!
Didn't you watch his last video about it lol
So glad we're getting useful tips at the end of Lindybeige videos to help us in our daily lives.
Exactly. I don't need to feel stupid for learning how people besieged castles back in the day.
Well, the thing about this Graphic novel is that no one is expecting a history book. It's a graphic novel that pays attention to history. Use artistic license, but only for parts you have to. That's basically what this book was, I thought. Perhaps not.
Bingo.
Ah yes but Lindy is under some pretty intense pressure to not screw up on the history after making so much noise about historical inaccuracies in other media. We are watching your every move Lloyd...
"That leaf is wrong"
We expect historically accurate botany, Lloyd.
+Glywysing
Hannibal's soldiers will all be using katanas.
+Thomas R. Jackson Well turn it inside out and you get kinda a falx.
Stop hyping me you fiend! I already bought it
Sorry.
Same here, so long as you don't have Thomas Jefferson riding in on a golden fire breathing horse with muskets for eyes that is being carried by giant bald eagles with American flags for capes, then I think it is safe to say you've sold this thing.
Maybe you should pitch it to some comic companies as well? Like Image or something.
I don't know, I kind of like the "Thomas Jefferson riding in on a golden fire breathing horse with muskets for eyes that is being carried by giant bald eagles with American flags for capes" thing. But then, I like manga, so go figure...
What'd I do?
what's simple! You create what story!
Lloyd, I just have to say thank you for all of your amazing content. I randomly stumbled onto your channel through youtube autoplay and since then you have quickly risen in the ranks of my favourite youtube channels. Thank you so very much and I hope you keep making better and better content as time goes on, and I'm sure you will.
you should make more video about the theory of writing in general. really enjoyed this one!
Kind of new to the channel, but after hearing how passionate you are about history and story from previous videos, I'm excited to see the final product!
my personal opinion lindy,
take artistic license and make up the personalities as you please
+Jon Deal
Just as long as he declares clearly first what parts are fictional to get the story to be gripping and what parts are actual tangible historical facts.
Yea, you could use color coding or different fonts to show which dialog is made up.
Cool 5 minute short! I really appreciate the insiders look into a large scale novel
I'm so happy that the kickstarter did so well. So hyped for this, good luck Lloyd!
Thank you for sharing the process, Lindy! It's very interesting!
will there be Bren Guns featured in the book?
No.
please?
....Pommels?
so there will be spandaus then...
How about katanas?
Great to see the thought process on this.
The challenges you mention are the reason I generally dont read or watch historical fiction. If a movie or book about a historical person looks interesting, I spend a day googling them and then spare myself the not knowing which parts were accurate and which were the authors sense of narrative drama. That said, I may check this out, I like supporting this kind of endeavor.
Hannibal's Personality
He was an aristocrat but in a mercantile culture that hired mercenaries to do it's fighting, he chose to be on the front line (literally in the case of Cannae) and eschew much of his culture's values by spending his family's fortunes on war in an effort to fulfill his promise to his father. Hannibal took his brothers on campaign and inspired incredible loyalty from his men. All of this is factual. He was nationally loyal, driven, charismatic, intelligent and a maverick who did things his own way. A writer could take the adage, "no one succeeds alone" and have Hannibal be personally brilliant but also make him willing to listen to his subordinates, thus inspiring loyalty and giving him the ability to harness a wide array of skills. But on the flip side, to his enemies, Hannibal was merciless and if not cruel, then certainly ruthlessly deadly. Roman cities that didn't turn on Rome itself were attacked by him and their fields were destroyed, people starved or slaughtered.
Just be true to history and you'll land somewhere close to the real Hannibal. Driven to fight his father's enemies to the point of barbarity. Loyal to his nation to the point of returning home despite the obvious defeat looming. Charismatic to the point of fostering jealousy in his Carthaginian rivals. Intelligent but also given credit for the works of those around him.
He failed to defeat Rome mainly because he wasn't given enough support and that happened because his fellow aristocrats were jealous. And also bear in mind that "defeating Rome" meant slaughtering everyone within the walls. As an intelligent guy, Hannibal would have been well aware of this fact and being driven to this goal, no matter the motivation, can seem monstrous.
Lloyd was definitely the right guy to choose for this project. He understands the elements that are key to a good story and how he needs to strike the various balances that are required, as well as drawing ideas from classics like the Iliad as he mentioned. The fact that he's putting in so much critical thought into this work is a very promising sign.
I like this channel, it's kind of like watching Monty python sketches of and eccentric history professor :)
Lindybeige you said you were going to slow down on videos because of this project and now youre releasing even more videos.
I am pleased.
Oh wow. As a world builder I stumble across your videos all the time.
Most recently I've been thinking of learning how the process of making a graphic novel works. Simply because I think it's fun learning about all sorts of things.
Do you watch anime Lloyd? If so. have you watched Legend of the Galactic Heroes? Its a space opera with a grand scale of characters featuring a war between two sides, one representing democracy and the other monarchism. Neither side is objectively good or bad and both sides have a host of good a bad characters, they also take time on occasion to focus on the tragic results of war on the common man. Maybe you could consider watching it for inspiration?
I really need to watch that again. Such a fantastic show.
Weeaboo.
Don't go around trying to push anime on people. Actually don't tell people what they should or shouldn't see at all, unless you're pretty sure they want to know.
u want to see some anime??
+Zersix selling anime from backalley ways there has been a surge in anime gang related crime
I'm enjoying your final thoughts/advice.
You've put some genuine thought into this, that's always encouraging when it comes to historical fiction. I particularly like that you want to give a perspective on the effects of ancient war from the point of view of various "commoners". Commendable. I've never liked purely "Great Men of History" types of narratives, since I consider those to be the most prone towards either lionizing or demonizing someone and completely neglecting to have a broader look at society and its woes.
Looking forward to this, particularly having just written a dissertation on the Punic wars :)
Found the channel 3 weeks ago .. finally watched all of the 500 videos !
All we can really know is Hannibal must have been motivated. His personality would have to have his motivation in it and shown. He would have to be a man who had a reason to dislike Rome, and to spend all these years and boot leather to trudge all those miles and have that many guys with him, he had to have a certain intensity to him that would be attractive to whoever chose to follow him. They too would have probably hated Rome for some reason, and for there to me such a large number of people both available and willing to spend years of their life on such a quest, they really, really would have had to have been motivated themselves and they would have been caught up in Hannibal's motivation. So, however you make him, he needs to be a person who expresses his goals and a plan that seems plausible. A manner about him that attracts others who share his ambitions and a reputation for success in other campaigns and an impressive array of weapons and skilled warriors who these followers would see as wholly capable.
He must have almost certainly been a charismatic man, too.
I'm guessing that there could have been economical and social reasons motivating every Carthagenian. Rome was a threat. Promises of gain. Then there were personal reasons for Hannibal's engagement in his role, like ambition, greed or responsibility, or a combination of these. Interesting questions.
Being an Englishman myself I know that long term motivation is a difficulty for anyone, especially for the common Englishman, so I say well done so far and good luck for a hopefully highly motivated future.
How exciting, I love graphic novels! I am looking forward to buying a copy, it sounds like quite a good read.
There's no such thing as too much war!
Until the nuclear warheads come out.
NO
SUCH
THING
How may Spandau's did Alexander take over the Alps?
None, but the other side had them, and that's why he lost the battle at Thermopylae
Only 'True' but that's all a casual fan needs.
+Space Walrus latter in the war the Picts also developed a Spandau which fired micro katanas which killed all the Mongolian horse archers in the battle of Agincourt
Can't wait to read it Lloyd, hope it does well mate.
I'm not really a graphic novel kind of guy but I just might make an exception for yours, if your way of making things interesting/entertaining in your videos translates to your writing then it must be a great novel. Also, I love the regular uploads lately c:
Honestly- I could listen all day to Lindy outlining all the other challenges of writing a historical graphic novel
wow, didnt know you whrere doing this, sounds cool, would like to see more videos about it!
Nice sweater. Good to see you sporting a little colour.
This new "as always" segment at the end is a nice touch.
But I'm running out of advice!
mentalfloss.com/article/54286/100-pieces-advice-100-year-olds
www.solitaryroad.com/pr11.html
There, that should see you through the next year or so.
I'd suggest you talk about it with George R.R. Martin, but I think the backers would want the result before the end of this century.
Don't know how about you, but I personally don't wanna see Hannibal dying five meters north of Alps because he stumbled on a rock or something.
+Pauliuk112 He would die because John Snow would stab him in the... lower area and then decapitate him. Just to show the roman Daenerys that the Starks are not on the Punics' side.
HistoricaHungarica And then Archimedes would destroy the Romans at Syracuse and ride on a mechanical dragon to burn Rome.
I might've changed my mind. Now I DO wanna see the Second Punic War as done by G. R. R. Martin.
Good luck Lindy!
One way to cut it down is to use pygmy elephants.
or moderate hills instead of mountains.
Making molehills out of mountains --- I like it.
It's a graphic novel, just use a sword to cut it down...
Yes, Iliad-style micro tragedies is a great idea! I'll be sure to buy a copy whenever it's finished. :)
You should make a podcast or an audio book because I could just listen to your ramblings, both directly and in the background, all day long.
Luv to see more archeology content....luv how you do....
I cannot wait for this graphic novel so excited. Very interesting points, I feel a lot of historical movies fail in this regard. They get so swept up in the grand scheme of things that the characters get lost and when something happens to them we're like "Oh well".
We have faith in you, Lindy! Go get them!
Great idea with the little stories.
It's going to be fantastic. Just do your thing! x
Best of luck. I can't wait to read it.
Lindybeige, why are you so proactive and energetic, your videos are always entertaining even if it's just you talking to us.
Did you do drama or something?
I think the accounts do give us some grounds to think of Hannibals personality. First off, he was a life long soldier. I think this would've made an emotionallly cool person. He also cared deeply for his direct family and the idea of catharge. I think it is safe to say he also had a defining hatred of Rome, and a very stubborn streak.
This looks like a very interesting project. One of my favorite shows is I, Claudius (great book too) so I am finding this a very interesting topic. Bringing a historical personality to life (especially when there is a bit of a blank around the personality bit) seems a bit of a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation. I tried doing research on Carthage for an RPG and ran into a similar problem (except the blanks I encountered that needed filling were around other things). I think one possibility is to think about what sort of man he'd have to have been in order to achieve what he did, but also what traits might be revealed by the strategies he chose and the course of action he ultimately took. Another is if you can find the nearest analog to Hannibal where there is some remaining evidence surrounding personality.
thanks for this video I'm wanting to write a graphic novel hopefully in a few years
Hey Lloyd, it's highly likely you'll have already read it, but Charley's War is an outstanding graphic novel about war that might help for some inspiration. It's set in The Great War, but it has excellent examples of what you're talking about with micro tragedies and getting you to be really emotionally involved with the larger scale events as well. I was absolutely distraught an extract from it in a school history textbook showed when one of the characters I liked was brutally killed off, before I'd read that far.
I thought you said you were not going to post as much videos because of the graphic novel?
It's not that I'm complaining, love hearing you "rant" about stuff.
Can you do a video about Ancient Roman naming conventions?
Just backed it. Sounds awesome.
...So thats how I got salmonella poisoning on Wednesday.
I watched the trailer and I gotta it looks really awesome! It's looks pretty, interesting and educational. Although, I'm not a big fan of colored comics and I'm wondering if there will be black and white version?
Nice writing tips.
This is really interesting Can you make more videos about how to write the story for a comic/graphic novel?
+Lindybeige could you do video about how you are writing for a graphic novel. You're technique for writing for panels and giving directions to the artist? :)
I am certainly looking forward to this graphic novel, but I couldnt help being distracted by Joer Mormont in the background, is that signed by Ian Glen?
You could also make it a series of two or three books. You could intersperse pivotal battles that took place in the war that affected him, with his narrative. This way, you can include more of the relevant information for folks who may not know much about the Punic Wars, Hannibal Scipio Africanus, etc.
Lindy, what experience do you have as a writer? I'm looking forward to reading this when you guys finish. Thanks.
hey Lloyd,
there is a UA-cam-channel called Extra Credits, they accaisionally make short, animated (and very good) series, about some periodes of History. Also a series about the Punic War. I think you might like them and perhaps draw some inspiration form them, for your graphic novel.
anyway, good luck writing and greatings from Germany
l like the multiple book series idea, would buy
Sounds like it would be amazing as an animation too!
alexander wins SOME points in my book for being basically the best and maybe the ONLY holywood portrayel of hellinistic warfare and it looked pretty damn good as far as formations, armour etc and the like, looked
Hullo mr B. While never doing so myself, I have an idea for you so save page space. Bear with it all. In movies, a jump cut takes the viewer from a to b to a again. In comic graphics terms one uses 'meanwhile. ..' etc. So my idea is to have the pages of different 'acts' printed in either different fonts or colour pages or border-less or...do you get the idea? Its a suitable nod to the reader that the 'act' changed. Keep it up.
I've staged a couple of "original" historical plays and ran into a lot of the same issues of adaptations -- the first was set strictly in c.1000 BC(E), and the other was a (post)modern(ish) blend of ancient and modern, with Caesar still in a toga but speaking into a cell and donning bifocals per as needed. The second approach was very freeing -- it was a way of underscoring that my play, while striving for believability of the historical record, was still a work of fiction, and acknowledged up front that my perspective was undoubtedly tainted by a mind reared in the late 20th century on the other side of the planet. I know people are officially kidding about Roman AK-47s, but I think that would be really cool. Just a thought. Best of success!
Lloyd have you been researching into other graphic novels with a historical setting? The Japanese have made a few good ones that I know of things like Yokoyama Mitsuteru's Genghis Khan or Alexandros by Yasuhiko Yoshikazu. Those two, especially the latter seemed to do a reasonable job of compressing things down, into 5 and 1 volume respectively.
I am dying to read you book. I know this is an old video but has your book been published yet? I CAN'T WAIT! :D
i actually liked the 2004 alexander movie. i dont know how historically accurate it was, but it was entartaining to me.
i think the actors did a great job and the soundtrack was just awesome!
Loyd! Its just a suggestion but maybe you could do a flowing montage/ misce en scene narrated by hannibal showing events leading up to the beginning of the story I.E siege of Syracuse is a single frame with exposition. Build the universe and make it more relatable to newcomers who might not have a background in ancient history.
I know what would make a great story! Achilles vs Hecktor duel where Achilles uses the Bren and Hecktor uses the Spandau!
You could have called it an MG34/MG42 just to annoy him
Grey conflicted personality might be a good choice. Or even personality of opposite extremes, but that depends on the context. You could also pick a certain trait and build the character around it and than break the trait and see what'll happen. Lots of ways. By the way, speaking about an artistic problem always makes it harder. When you put enough time into thinking about something, the resolution comes naturally. But you have to keep it inside. Or maybe it's not the way how it works... I don't know.
id love to see a series develop surrounding ancient events. Graphic novel for a major siege would be wonderfull
Speaking of Alexander (the movie), could you make a video on it? I'd like to know your thoughts.
A few suggestions:
1.. Full textpages of background info. the action is comic, the non action is story.
2. Hyperlinks... use barcodes. basically everybody has a smartphone ( i think there is even an app that can hide barcodes in ornamental pictures
This should be made into an audio book as well; with a slideshow of the illustrations.
I make my living as a writer and editor, and while I've never done a graphic novel I can imagine how much work it is. Hang in there--I'm greatly looking forward to the end result!
I'm betting on the Romans for the win.
You're delusional, Hannibal is the main character.
Martin Figueras Did he win?
Winning the battles, losing the war. Had he been killed by a traitor, George R. R. Martin would surely have added a Hannibal Stark to ASoIaF.
Greetings. I've been watching for a couple years now.
I'm a writer, only had short stories and poetry published up 'til now but...
I see a man with an overwhelming presence, confident in his vocation, giving all matters their due consideration but never over-thinking, taciturn and composed. I think he was not afraid to be a tyrant if the situation demanded it, because he had no qualms about doing Lake Trasimene. But we also know he was willing to use bribery if that was more advantageous. He was a smart guy, let's assume he grasps "carrot and stick."
So which commander is more effective, the cold overseer, or the guy you can get drunk with? We know his men were able to coordinate, and were highly disciplined. They had to be, they were fighting the Romans! He needed their absolute confidence. The man it would take to accomplish what he did must have inspired awe in his men no matter what he did. The record speaks for itself.
So I think the best bet is to show a bit of both. He was a genius, but he was the product of a violent era. Make him sympathetic, but show some of that coldness, too. And show lots of pensive silences for the reader to project onto him. XP
Pensive silences are very easy to write!
Ha!
I love the way you "The Colonel"ed your video at the end, Mr. Chapman would have approved.
I fancy myself as a bit of a writer so I am going to say that one thing you could do is make the observations of Hannibal through the eyes of a trusted soldier, closest/favorite slave or servant. or even a guard that constantly is near him and have their view of him as a stoic of sorts. True the main character would change but you could then focus on the various battles and politics surrounding Hannibal and his campaigns without making snap judgments of Hannibal himself. In this way he could be seen as a larger than life character through the other's eyes.
This is a fairly great idea.
My uncle's cousin's mother's brother's son once heard of this roman dude who hid in a hole 2 feet from the Carthaginian lines and their spears were so inaccurate that they missed every time they tried to stab him. No Joke.
No wonder the Romans won, Atleast they had scopes on their spears
If you're into metal, Eluveitie really opened my eyes to this kind of caring about the "others" kind of thing. Their albums Helvetios and Origins focus on the Gallic Wars and Celtic mythology, respectively, from the perspective of ancient Helvetians. Particularly powerful are their songs "Meet the Enemy", "A Rose for Epona" and "Alesia"
Please ramble more... I think it was in depth which is what I am looking for. There is so much 1st level tutorial stuff out there that its a mess. I want to hear about how people break down problems (like which scenes/battles you cut and which ones stayed in) and how you made the decisions you did. Please, ramble on... like Led Zeppelin. Thank you.
If you're going to choose to skip things because they're too repetitive, you might consider using simple lists for "the rest of it"i. (If those dont get too long for this kind of novel) This sounds more challenging than simply telling a history story.
Also your video on the Illiad was great,I may never read it but now I learned something important about it.
If you want to see entertaining compression of the Punic Wars, have you ever heard of Dan Carlin? His Hardcore History episodes 'Punic Nightmares' has a focus on the Roman side, so perhaps not as applicable, but he does a phenomenal job of summarizing the war as a whole. Perhaps some inspiration can be drawn?
so here is a request. . . . could you do a video regarding Seax Knives and the langSeax variants as well
The fall of Carthage is a fascinating part of history. With the Kickstarter doing so well, it would be awesome to see this become a trilogy of books focusing on the end of Carthage with Hannibal as a major part. If anybody could do the material justice, it's you. I'm proud to support this project.
I'd recommend the book Hannibal by Ross Leckie I believe. Yes it's very much a story over historical account but it tries to be accurate and makes Hannibal a very sympathetic character without being too biased
More rambling please! :D
