@xoxMaybel You should follow the girls at @curlycurvypassion on Instagram if you really want to learn from curlies who actually have fine high porosity hair. They have helped me a ton and are so humble!
Yes me too.. My 9 year old daughter has 3a 3b curls, low density fine stands that are naturally high porosity, she's a red head. And any suggestions on handling the constant tangling?
I needed this video five years ago when I started my cg journey. I've abandonded my curly hair effort because it was too much money wasted on products that did not work for me, and it just looked awful but I'm glad to see this for the curly community! Great research and a much needed topic.
Super helpful. I've been binge-watching your videos to try and get my wavy hair back instead of frying it with a curling iron daily. I'm so glad you mentioned Ecoslay because I'm really interested in trying them. Thank you for all the time you spend, putting this information out for free!! You are such a blessing!
There are so many good products out there, it's hard to choose just one. Enjoy playing, call it a (relatively cheap) hobby if you need to! I have so much more in the works, both for UA-cam and for alysonlupo.com, where I dive into technique deeper, and on models. Exciting stuff out there, and coming! Thanks for being here!
Wow! I just found your channel and I am learning so much! I just realized I have 2a or 2b hair that is transitioning from straight and it’s such a relief because I feel like I don’t know how to manage my hair anymore. All the things that used to work don’t seem to anymore. I’m very sensitive to perfumes so when I realized I was going to have to try and get a gel that I would never find an unscented one that you say that Jessicurl comes in an unfragranced version! Yay I can really have it all! No perfume and curls! I’m excited to embrace my waves!
My straight and limp hair suddenly turned curly... I lost a lot of hair with products that I think stripped rather than moisturize. Anyway, I changed my shampoo & the hairfall stopped... I realized i needed to learn how to embrace my curls & a stop at wholefoods confirmed it for me. I found you recently & feel my hair seems similar to yours. Due to hair loss, I had stopped all heat, chemicals years ago... so they are healthy for sure. I also dont have the patience to spend too much time on my hair... so this is a perfect video for me. Thank you soooo much for all that you share and teach... hopefully some day my hair can start looking like yours without too much fuss🙏

I'm new to finding out I have wavy hair. I have been working with a stylist to talk about hair and review products. I never used to do much with my hair. I wore it long and straight because I didn't know anything besides that or better. I have watched and read so much on the curly movement. Most of the stuff isn't for me now that I know I'm a 2A. Learning about and trying new products I can now choose how I want to style my hair and do curly days that look good (more like 2B). I really like your channel because you have similar hair and make easy to follow, funny and comprehensive videos. Thank you.
Please consider linking products (with affiliate links even) in the description box. There are about 100 kinds of Pantene mousse products and a direct link to the specific brand you recommend would be helpful.
Thank you for your wonderful videos! I’m finally embracing y curls and my gray and your curly girl videos are so helpful! And I love watching the progression between your old videos and your new videos and how much your hair has changed over time. That itself is a true testament to the process. I also enjoy watching because my hair has a similar texture to yours I don’t have a lot of hair my hair is thin and fine and between wavy and curly (especially in the damaged parts!). But I’m constantly excited by how much more my hair will curl when I use the right products for my hair! Thank you again!!
Lus is a one product. It’s a leave in. It’s everything. My holy grail. It’s light weight and won’t leave a product feel to your hair. Doesn’t weigh it down.
Thank you so much for this. I have found so much information out there for people with thick coarse curly hair, and almost nothing for those of us with fine, fine curls. I have wasted so much money on the wrong products. What a great resource!
Just tried Mop Top Curl Custard for the first time, and holy cow did I have trouble getting all the crunch scrunched out, which makes me hopeful that I'll still have great definition when I wake up tomorrow. Thank you for all the products you review, and wowee zowee Mop Top is good!!!! Got their starter try-it bundle for $10, and without you I might never have heard of it.
Please can you post a video of your favorite finishing products to layer after leave in but before applying a gel? (I.e. mousses, foams, curl enhancers, curl cremes etc.)
I watched this video a week or so ago, and ordered the Zerran foam shortly thereafter - it’s in my hair right now and I’m waiting to see the final result but...MAN...my expectations are blown by the hold, cast, and definition. I was expecting it to be a flop, but that the polyquat-69 would be good for anti-fizz and UV protection at minimum. This may be my One-and-Done!!
I found you completely by mistake researching a hairdryer. So glad I did! You have inspired me and educated me so much. I'm a month into curly girl and never been happier with my hair thanks to you! One question though- where can I get these earrings? They are gorgeous!
Can you do a video on amodimethacone? I had never heard that it was attracted to weak points in your hair preventing breakage, as you mentioned. I'd love to know more to see where to use it in my routine! Thanks!
First off, I am really enjoying your videos! Do you think you will be doing anytime soon and updated video showing your routine from wet to dry and what products you use!?Thank you so much I am learning a lot :-)
This video and you are WONDERFUL! So genuine and informative. Your videos have been a life saver for me! I’m a teacher so I can’t afford a deva curl cut and all those products so your recommendations really helped. Much love all around 🥰❤️
I agreed with about Wave Maker. Had such high hopes for this product but it just made my hair stringy. The Jessicurl gel doesn't work for me either. I really like Andalou gel.
I have been loving Not Your Mother's Curl Talk mousse and gel! (Separately, not layered together!) Have you tried Shea Moisture Curling Gel Souffle? Or Curl Enhancing Smoothie? I love their Miracle Styler as a leave-in! I'm no expert, but their products, seem very nourishing. Great video, as always!!
I have hair similar to Alyson’s and I have tried Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie, and I gotta say I hate it. It seems too emollient/heavy and leaves me with mounds of frizz. Seems to be a quality product, just not for my hair type. I do, however, love their Moisture Retention Shampoo and matching conditioner.
I’ve been into one and dones more lately because of the heat. My favorite is a gem I found at Marshall’s, Beautiful Curls Defining Gel. It’s all natural. It’s affiliated with Alaffia, which is a fair trade brand. The hold is crazy, but it’s moisturizing and leaves my hair shiny
Thank thank you so much for this video!! I have been CG for almost 2 years now and have been wishing to find a one and done product for my hair without breaking the bank and having to buy a bunch of products that may or may not work for my hair:/ Now thanks to u, I at least have an idea of some products to try! Please continue to make awesome videos!
I dont know about anyone else but I had amazing success with LUS. Not like the pictures on the website necessarily - but my wavy hair had so much bounce and curl. I was a fan :)
Do you have video on top shampoo/ conditioners that you love? Or are currently using? If anyone can help me. I have the Asiam coconut wash and love it but want a low poo to rotate. TKS 😘
I've talked about them in various videos, but never done a video devoted to them. TBH, I have had the hardest time finding shampoos and especially conditioners I like, so the list is pretty short. I'll film something on that soon!
I never knew you were in cosmetology school, that just makes me love your channel even more. I feel like we have VERY similar hair both curl pattern and my hair density is very similar which makes your opinions magical. I'm in the transition phase (week 2.) and my hair is just struggling. I know this is normal. My curl pattern is actually more of a mixture of 2b/2c/3a. I think I have been using too much gel which is weighing my hair down. I'm going to try adding a tinyt bit of a cream and WAY less gel.
Me too! I definitely heard somewhere recently that it was a leave in and started using it that way and now I love it. I didn't do much for me as a gel, but maybe my hair is healthier now. What a confusing product!!!
I’ve been using Devacurl’s Wavemaker as my one and done this summer. It’s been working really well for me. I have perfect beachy waves as if I used a curling iron for multiple days and my hair and scalp is in great condition. I’ll have to try the B’Leave In. I can’t use the gels as they give me crazy bad dandruff.
Love this video! I have been simplifying my routine lately. I have my shampoo and conditioner on lock down, they do wonders for my hair already, so finding that one product to give my hair that extra love is so important to me. I am definitely considering options from your list!
My curls are very similar to yours and you've never steered my wrong with your product recommendations! I now use as I am coconut co was and the leave in because of you! You've helped me so much thank you. Can you help me decide between Jessicurl Spiralicuous or the DevaCurl Bleave in? I'm about to travel to Paris and London and trying to decide which one to get for my trip hahaha
Hey love! I just want to say thank you so much for helping me understand ingredients soon much more. You are a curl angel 😘 I have one question is hydrolyzed corn starch a protein?
You are awesome and soooooo helpful! Really excited about your new career path...wish I lived nearby so you could be my stylist! Will you remind me what the deal is with Glycerin? Thanks!
Re: Drugstore vs. salon-quality products, I think something people should also consider is cumulative cost. Like, it might feel more palatable to buy an $8 NYM product here and a $6 Aussie product there, but if you're using lots and layering four products every few days (with refreshing in between), are you really saving compared to a $24 nourishing one-and-done that holds for days?
I LOVE hair resort! I saw Atoya recommend it and being easy to find here in Australia had to try it. It’s now my favourite one and done. It is pricey for such a small bottle but you don’t need much so worth it.
Anyone have a new recommendation for the Pantene mousse?! They just changed their formula and it's awful! 😭 It has no hold! Our whole family has been using the mousse for years and now we have to find something new!
I was the 500th like. I feel special... This was a good rundown. I'm going to try some of these, because Deva Curl has been a disappointment in the hold and frizz control department, I'm just choking at the cost of Evolvh products, and I'd like to get to less layering if possible.
I have been stuck on your videos! They have helped with my hair so much! I've looked all over for Lorraine Massey's suggestion for wavy's should wash their hair under a hairnet so the water doesn't weigh down the wave. Have you tried that technique? Does that work?
Wonderful video, as always. You have been so helpful in my wavy CGM journey. I agree with many of your recommendations. For me, right now in ATX, my go to is the Ouidad ACC gel you mentioned. When the dews come down, Bounce Curl Creme Gel is my fave. My hair loves protein, but Boucleme really works for me. (Don’t know how they do it!) I look forward to trying the TreLuxe. Good luck on your training!
Have you (or anyone) tried the new boucleme super hold styler? Seems like it could be a good one and done. Their regular gel hadn't near enough hold for my liking, when used on its own.
I have high density normal porosity 3b/c hair and I love The arc angel gel form deva and have the spiralicious gel on my hair right now! Love your channel, so informative! ❤️
As a high porosity wavy girl with fine hair and low density, I love DevaCurl Wave Maker as a one-and-done styling product. I've been on the curly girl method for 2 years, and I find that my hair is much easier to refresh in the morning if I don't go too heavy handed with the styling products, or that I may not even need a refresh. I can't promise that other wavy girls will all have the same results, but my hair does really well with Wave Maker, and I suspect that the whipped texture of this product helps it penetrate the really open follicle of high porosity hair without weighing down baby fine strands. If you're a high porosity girl who might want to give this product a try, remember if you decide in 60 days or less that you don't like Wave Maker then DevaCurl will take it back and refund your money.
hey! idk if you'll see this but!! AG recoil doesn't give me a good cast? i'm trying to figure out the right amount but it just seems like it doesn't work hmm
Hi! I'm about 2 months into the CGM, and I'm ready to invest in some top shelf products! If you were to recommend one brand for everything what would it be? I would love to buy a leave-in, cream styler, and gel from one place to save on shipping. I think that would be a great video or insta story. Thanks! Love your content :)
Love your videos! Would you have any piece of advice for people like me who need to tie up their hair at work? I have mid-back long hair and am considering cutting it really short just to leave it down
If you have long hair, the fun side is that you can wear all kinds of fun up-styles. You don't have to do a ponytail all day! Try twisting it up into a wavy chignon, a braided or twisted faux-hawk, a messy bun with a scarf tie or headband...you have lots of options to play with your natural texture. I'll start thinking about an updos video as I'm growing out my hair a little. Be on the lookout!
I can’t really tell what my hair density and thickness is, I used to think I had very thick hair and high density because it was very floofy and puffy from using sulfates, however now that i’m taking care of it properly it’s much more calmed down and flatter so I can’t really tell anymore
Troi Hackett Kevin Murphy has a line for curly hair: Killer Curls and Killer Waves. I love the Killer Curls! I’m not sure if they’re CG friendly though. I do know that their clean, vegan products.
How do you de-tangle? What brush do you use? Right now I'm using one of those wet/dry no-pull de-tangling brushes in the morning and at night and they completely ruin the structure of my waves.
What does enhancement mean in this context? I feel like I have to have a curl cream or mousse to help waves/curls form + lots of hold. Moisture not so much. It sort of makes my waves / curls slide right out.
Thanks for another terrific review. I'm going to jump in and try Zotos All about Curls because it's easy to find and a good price point. If you reviewed it I missed it. My hair seems to be much like yours, so thanks for taking this journey and sharing with us all and inspiring me to let my wavy back out.
Thanks for recommending the Deva Curl B'Leave-in, as a one and done product. I've been layering it with other Deva Curl products, and not getting the results I get when using it alone. I've been wanting to ask, are you at all concerned about the types of chemicals in the hair products you discuss? When I read the EWG website, some of their reports are pretty shocking, and make me want to steer clear of products that are full of chemicals. Have you ever reviewed "natural" or "fewer ingredient" curly products? Love your videos!!!
So stinking happy to see a new video from you! You are my fav! So how do you use Wavemaker as a layering product? I had a Devacut in June and bought all Deva products, and honestly, I don’t like them. I’m a fine haired wavy, high porosity. The foam is okay, but not enough hold. I can’t figure out Wavemaker and Beautiful Mess is an Awful Mess! 😂
could you further explain about the cosmetology degree and curl hair specialist...is this part of your program or did u take extra curly hair classes elsewhere?
ann martin great question! The specialist part is not part of the program, but rather will come from the certifications to come as part of my ongoing education. Hopefully will get a good jump on those this summer, considering everything going on right now! 😷😬🤪
Thank you for this video! I used my b-leavin and got amaaaazing results. Except for my roots. What do you do to prevent roots from being weird? Even though I style and diffuse upside down, I often get clumps stuck out at weird angles or plastered to my scalp. This time I had a weird L-shaped part. When it dried- not after sleeping on it... help!!

Can you please do a video on how to properly balance protein and moisture in a curly hair routine..💜

My problem is that I don't know what product to use when and for what! There are sooo many that it's incredibly confusing!
When you become a curly hair specialist, I may have to come to Dallas (or wherever you are) and come see you!
Thanks!
What about Mop Top Curly Custard? Does it meet your one and done criteria?
It definitely does. I'm just all out, out of sight out of mind!!
can you please do a review on cantu products?
First off, I am really enjoying your videos! Do you think you will be doing anytime soon and updated video showing your routine from wet to dry and what products you use!?Thank you so much I am learning a lot :-)
This video and you are WONDERFUL! So genuine and informative. Your videos have been a life saver for me! I’m a teacher so I can’t afford a deva curl cut and all those products so your recommendations really helped. Much love all around 🥰❤️
Sending you the biggest hugs! Thank you!
My salon sells the Kevin Murphy line (Cleveland Oh area) so I may need to try it!
Not all of it is CG, so be sure to read the ingredients. But the Hair Resort is fabulous!
I agreed with about Wave Maker. Had such high hopes for this product but it just made my hair stringy. The Jessicurl gel doesn't work for me either. I really like Andalou gel.
Oooohhhh, haven't tried that one! Thanks for the rec!
I have been loving Not Your Mother's Curl Talk mousse and gel! (Separately, not layered together!)
Have you tried Shea Moisture Curling Gel Souffle? Or Curl Enhancing Smoothie? I love their Miracle Styler as a leave-in! I'm no expert, but their products, seem very nourishing. Great video, as always!!
I have hair similar to Alyson’s and I have tried Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie, and I gotta say I hate it. It seems too emollient/heavy and leaves me with mounds of frizz. Seems to be a quality product, just not for my hair type. I do, however, love their Moisture Retention Shampoo and matching conditioner.
This was so helpful! I love the idea of finding a one-and-done product that works well. Thank you!
Surface curl whip mousse is my one and done.
Can you review LUS love ur curls.
I've used it. Haven't been impressed.
I dont know about anyone else but I had amazing success with LUS. Not like the pictures on the website necessarily - but my wavy hair had so much bounce and curl. I was a fan :)
I bought the jessi curl gel after watching your videos. It's my holy grail now.
I think I just diagnosed myself with low porosity hair 🎉🎉 I’ve been trying to figure that one out for a while now
Good for you!!! Knowing your porosity is SO essential.
Huh. I’ve been using b’leavin in my routine as my leave in. Maybe I’ll try it on it’s own next wash day.
Me too! I definitely heard somewhere recently that it was a leave in and started using it that way and now I love it. I didn't do much for me as a gel, but maybe my hair is healthier now. What a confusing product!!!
Texture ID foam is my fav.
Could u try Curl Mix? I so love all ur videos!!! Thank u!!!
Alyson...can you please do a video on what, if anything, you do differently now in Sept 2019 than you did in like Nov. 2016? It would be so helpful!
Have you seen my video on how I style my wavy bob? It's much more current.
Thanks!
I just love your reviews! What do you think of rice water rinses and vinegar rinses?
Thank you! I'm not a great DIYer. Too much to remember before shower time, too much opportunity for spoilage, and too much to clean up!
I love Jessi curl! And they have free samples of everything
Re: Drugstore vs. salon-quality products, I think something people should also consider is cumulative cost. Like, it might feel more palatable to buy an $8 NYM product here and a $6 Aussie product there, but if you're using lots and layering four products every few days (with refreshing in between), are you really saving compared to a $24 nourishing one-and-done that holds for days?
that's a good point!
I LOVE hair resort! I saw Atoya recommend it and being easy to find here in Australia had to try it. It’s now my favourite one and done. It is pricey for such a small bottle but you don’t need much so worth it.
Love, love, love this! Products are really difficult to obtain in Australia so I need a thorough review from a reliable wavy before I jump in 💋
I know it, and I wish I knew more about what you had available to you. Trying! :)
Also, LOVE your screen name!!
Check out Hair Romance she's Australian!
Yes, I LOVE her!!!
Lipstick Konniption hair resort is a winner and so easy to get here in Australia
Anyone have a new recommendation for the Pantene mousse?! They just changed their formula and it's awful! 😭 It has no hold! Our whole family has been using the mousse for years and now we have to find something new!
I would love to know what your favorite leave in conditioners are.
In other videos she's said that her absolute favorite leave-in is the as-i-am leave in ;)
I was the 500th like. I feel special...
This was a good rundown. I'm going to try some of these, because Deva Curl has been a disappointment in the hold and frizz control department, I'm just choking at the cost of Evolvh products, and I'd like to get to less layering if possible.
Awww, I'm honored!!!! Thank you! And yes, Evolvh is pricey. Wishing you the bet of luck with your journey!
Can you please make videos using some of your favorite one and done products and show the results
Have you (or anyone) tried the new boucleme super hold styler? Seems like it could be a good one and done. Their regular gel hadn't near enough hold for my liking, when used on its own.
Hi thank you for this! Question, what about deva ultra defining gel? I notice you recommend arc angel and light defining gel. Thx!!
Yes, I have the same question!
Please what can I do to find out my porosity! 😭😭 I’m not able to answer the questions in a quiz I just don’t know anything about my hair
Fantastic video! Do you have a fav shampoo for low porosity hair? I can't seem to find one without coconut or castor oil. 😔
I am always so happy to see a new video from you!! Keep them coming!
You're the sweetest! Thank you!
Kassandra Walker wondering if you end up finding a top shelf brand that is worth the money?
Love your videos! Would you have any piece of advice for people like me who need to tie up their hair at work? I have mid-back long hair and am considering cutting it really short just to leave it down
If you have long hair, the fun side is that you can wear all kinds of fun up-styles. You don't have to do a ponytail all day! Try twisting it up into a wavy chignon, a braided or twisted faux-hawk, a messy bun with a scarf tie or headband...you have lots of options to play with your natural texture. I'll start thinking about an updos video as I'm growing out my hair a little. Be on the lookout!
@@alysonlupo thanks so much, i'll look out for ideas, totally guilty of the pony tail all day ^^ and my hair hates it
I can’t really tell what my hair density and thickness is, I used to think I had very thick hair and high density because it was very floofy and puffy from using sulfates, however now that i’m taking care of it properly it’s much more calmed down and flatter so I can’t really tell anymore
Yay, I'm glad you picked a Kevin murphy! Hoping they come out with a curl line
Yes, and a CG one at that! I would be thriled!
I can't wait until your Curl Junkie review and I want to try Bounce Curl 😊💕
I just figured out over the last couple of days, foam is for me. Nothing else really works, everything else is just too heavy and my hair looks dirty.
Jazzie Red same here!! I rediscovered mousse and it changed me
Does the Bounce Curl provide more hold than the Deva Curl Light Defining Gel?
Which ones would you recommend for gray/dyed, course-ish, very inconsistent, low density waves?
Oh boy-I discovered another product junkie like me, and now I know what to do with the Devacurl B-Leave In Curl Plumper-can’t wait to wash!
Would like to know if you use a leave in conditioner with Kevin Murphy hair resort? And if you do which one? 😊
What does enhancement mean in this context? I feel like I have to have a curl cream or mousse to help waves/curls form + lots of hold. Moisture not so much. It sort of makes my waves / curls slide right out.
Can you list the products in the description box please? I have watched the video multiple times to look up each product. Love the video
Thanks for another terrific review. I'm going to jump in and try Zotos All about Curls because it's easy to find and a good price point. If you reviewed it I missed it. My hair seems to be much like yours, so thanks for taking this journey and sharing with us all and inspiring me to let my wavy back out.
I keep hearing so much about that line! I've got to try it!! So happy to have you on this journey. :) Thank you for being part of mine!
Do you think the Treslexe gel and conditioner will work for color damaged thick hair?
Thank you for all the information. Love it! Can you tell me where you are on the porosity range? Thx!
My hair is in the low to medium porosity range. Not terribly difficult to hydrate, and holds hydration well.
@@alysonlupo So it doesn't get full of water that quickly, right!?
Hi Alyson. Have you tried the LUS brand all-in-one for wavy hair?
Thanks for recommending the Deva Curl B'Leave-in, as a one and done product. I've been layering it with other Deva Curl products, and not getting the results I get when using it alone. I've been wanting to ask, are you at all concerned about the types of chemicals in the hair products you discuss? When I read the EWG website, some of their reports are pretty shocking, and make me want to steer clear of products that are full of chemicals. Have you ever reviewed "natural" or "fewer ingredient" curly products? Love your videos!!!
Sue Ashworth everything has chemicals in it. Chemical does not = bad. You should be fine.
Sue Ashworth I agree with you. I only use natural products
I needed this, thanks for the guidance!
Do you ever use your spiralicious with the bounce curl light crème gel? Or the boucleme curl cream with bouncecurl?
I understand what glycerin does when the dew point isn't ideal, but what about protein and the dew point? Any thing to know?
Thank you for this video! I used my b-leavin and got amaaaazing results. Except for my roots. What do you do to prevent roots from being weird? Even though I style and diffuse upside down, I often get clumps stuck out at weird angles or plastered to my scalp. This time I had a weird L-shaped part. When it dried- not after sleeping on it... help!!
Jessicurl Spiralicious did not work as a one and done for me. Glad I didn’t have plans today- my hair is a frizzy mess.
Oh no! Did you try combing your hair prior to application? Look at my squish to condish video to see what I mean...
Kelly Perry I didn’t like it either. Gave it to a coworker.
