Went CGM in August and my hair did well until it got cold (I have low porosity hair). Nothing I did worked, my waves were frizzy and limp. And then I tried this technique and my hair looked better than it has ever looked. Same products, same techniques, except I added the double application method. My mom said my hair looks beautiful. She has never said that about my hair, she usually tells me I need to comb it. You solved my winter hair problem. Thanks!

Oh they most definitely are different animals in their respective seasons. I've been CG for years now. But with the surge of better wavy-curly products proliferating the market I'm still refining my seasonal routines. I needed the reminder too. I never found wave maker very helpful for my wavy curls. The other day while cleaning my bathroom mom drawer I pulled it out & tried a refresh with it & voila...I finally got the luv for this product. As a refresher, it'll last a long time too!

This one tip is the single most helpful thing I've learned on my curly quest. It is an absolute game changer. Before I did the second application with the gel, my hair always felt like I was halfway there. Now I've arrived. Finally my hair is shiny and soft and wavy and wonderful. And my days 2 and 3 are so much better - very little refresh required. You are right - it seems very basic and I'm shocked at how much it has changed my hair and my outlook and this whole curly venture. Thank-you so much!

Literally changed my life. Literally, not as in "figuratively, but I want to add emphasis" but literally-literally, as in, "zero hyperbole, no word of exaggeration, this is what physically occurred in the real world, in real time".
My hair has a lot of natural waves; not big, juicy, glamour ones like yours, but little ripple-y ones, kinda mermaidy - the tight but modest sort that look like their 5 year plan included becoming Licensed Ringlets[tm], but then they just stopped going to classes and failed college, and now they're permanently hungover and don't know who they are, anymore. You know the ones; braid waves, but without the braids. Unfortunately, since I started wearing it long again, and blunt, its fine-texture high-density situation pulls it down so taut the instant you add any water-weight, it could barely be described as "wiggly" - which is obviously absolutely *awful* for trying to set up the wave, let alone try to encourage any sort of curl - and the fact that I've been white-haired by artifice for the last 5 years straight absolutely does not help to give it any "guts" (30-40vol peroxide and then toner, every 6 weeks, is in no way CG-pious, but - - "It's my sig-nature co-lour!") .
Following most CG advice was just putting more weight into it when wet, so I had the frustration of seeing when it had dried, for all my work and expensive products, it actually had sprung up *less* than if I just left it alone! This frustration continued through myriad products and myriad orders of application and techniques.
Until I found this video. Alyson, it's a game-changer. I now do my LOC on sopping wet hair, squishing-to-condish at each stage of product, then plop for 15 minutes in my pink microfibre turbie (I have only started CG in the last few months, and had a bunch of these already; I know microfibre isn't exactly a saint of CG, but a girl only has so much cash), then release and scrunch in an enhancer gel and a curling mousse, then I plop for another 5 minutes in my black mc turbie, then release and very carefully scrunch in a lot of spray gel, making sure not to separate existing clumps and spirals and squeezing to encourage others, and then I finally plop for another *30 minutes* in my chamois turbie to support the weight until the cast has formed.
It doesn't give me the most awesome volume, since I have to push my accordion-ed hair back up against my head for the setting of the cast, but it does mean that I wind up with really tight, defined waves rather than the maddening, just "vaguely bendy" hair I was getting before discovering this revolutionary but, in hindsight, so intuitive it's embarrassing I didn't figure it out for myself, concept of re-plopping at multiple stages throughout, and using both the enhancing but light hold gel *and* the firmer hold gel I have, rather than having to choose between them.
Thank you so much, it's been so helpful.

Wavy gal here. Oh my gosh. I just found your videos last night and I've been binge-watching them because they have been SO helpful. I've tried aspects of the CGM off and on over the years (didn't know it had a name until recently so it was just "recommendations for curly hair types" I'd picked up here and there), and I've always ended up with gunky, frizzy, greasy AND over-dried locks. I thought it needed more time, I just need my hair to "get used to" the new routines. Turns out I just needed some better advice. (Well water/hard water and co-washing don't mix well! Thank you for confirming that for me.)
Thank you so much for sharing your hair care tips, tricks, tutorials, product recs...OMG. This is the first time I've had ANY success with my curls/waves. I desperately need a proper haircut for curly hair, but things are finally starting to fall into place with my hair and going natural instead of straitening my hair and endlessly fighting what it wants to do naturally. I can't say thank you enough. I was starting to think my hair was hopeless. You've also got me contemplating keeping my hair short! Yours looks so beautiful like that! Mine's super thick so it probably won't look anything like that once I really get CGM rolling but it's been inspirational, none-the-less.

Thank you so much.

I’ve been doing this for about half a year and it makes a massive difference. I have low porosity hair, very thick hair so I need to plop overnight and diffuse in the morning. When I take my hair out of the plop I apply another layer of gel focusing on my looser areas in particular and then diffuse. I find that compared to the smashters method this gives me softer and better clumps whereas smashters can come out a bit stringy and product heavy for me. I find this is also a method that refreshes a lot better than smashters because you have have less product in your hair so your hair’s a bit happier to be able to do its thing at night rather than being controlled and you end up with weird curls in the morning. Btw Alyson your hair looks gorge today! You recently inspired me to chop my long hair to shoulder length and I could not be more thrilled. The bounce and volume is amazing and I feel like I’m not having to control an unruly mass of hair all the time.

Welcome back Allyson!! As a wavy, I will definitively try this method: I have Wave maker and Light Defining Gel, and I think DC products are so good for those of us having baby fine waved hair. But even when I get a good cast, and good waves after scrunching, in a few hours my hair ends up messy, wonky, flat... why?...(I’m on my 4 cgm month). And the other thing is I cannot achieve clumps: my hair tends to stay divided... it seems to me it’s strenghtless, if this make sense. But I pay a lot of attention taking care of it, with rice rinse, acv rinse, deep conditioning, balancing protein and moisture. So now what?...

    • @ocandro
      @ocandro 5 років тому +5

AmandaLynn it has shea butter really high up, maybe it's not heavy after first use, but on wavy or fine hair, especially lower porosities it will become heavy and build up very quickly, not to mention what it does to oily scalps. The descriptions don't represent the actual product most of the time, always read ingredients. Honestly this line will always exclude a huge market, because they put this goddamn butter everywhere. It's best to spend a little more on good products imo.

I kind of do a double application method but with different products before and after plopping. I use a small amount of wavemaker and ultra defining gel when my hair is soaking wet, then plop for about 10 minutes. I apply just barely enough to get the ball rolling but not enough to form a cast. Soaking wet hair isthe only time I can use gel. If my hair is damp and I try to apply gel, hair will stick to my hands and be a frizzy mess. Then after my let out the plop and my hairs damp, I apply mouse because it’s light and airy easy to distribute evenly without having to smooth it through. (smoothing product in usually kills my waves) Mousse is my holy grail, Star of the show wave product. That’s what I use to make my cast.it’s gives me a very light cast that’s easy to break and my waves are super happy, shiny, and defined. On a good day I’ll even get some spirals which make me super happy lol.

Very helpful! I love that you show beginning to end. I usually get a good cast in my ends but not my crown root area so I think this will really help me. Good luck in school! I have been a licensed cosmetologist for 7 years now and I love going to work everyday 😉

Your hair looks amazing! Can't wait to try out the gel double application method this evening. I've been CG for about 15 months and tried so many different product combos, but it was your videos 2 months ago that made me realise that I should be caring for my hair in its current state (2B/C) instead of trying to care for it in its original state from my childhood (was 3A). The difference has been crazy, I have defined waves (with some curls in between!) now, and maybe by this time next year my original curls will be back? Either way, I love your approach to haircare, especially your scientific explanations of the ingredients and different techniques. Good luck on your educational path!

Exactly. You have to care for your hair the way it is now. Couldn't have said it better than you did. :)

I basically do this method on a regular basis, but I don’t plop. Within half an hour if I feel like I have too much frizz or there’s no cast forming at all (can normally tell by the front pieces that dry faster) I’ll do this. I never named it anything though 😂

I accidentally tried this method the other day and it worked gloriously for me!!! Glad to see you made a video on this :) Also, nice to see how little product you actually use, it makes me think I've probably been going far too heavy on my products...makes sense that my fine hair gets so weighed down.

I was over here panicking and thinking that my hair was losing its curl for good but thank god I can now safely assume that it’s the New England winter getting to me. Phew. Anyways, loved this video and will be trying it tomorrow. I always struggled to decide whether I should apply gel on soaking or damp hair (both work for me, just in different ways) but DUH! Why not do both??

So useful! I don't know why I didn't think of doing this earlier! It's so true what you said about winter vs summer waves...I've been noticing my waves get weighed down more + actually need LESS moisture. Going to try this method w/ AVG. Thanks!

I am barely one week in cg and this method actually might keep me in the game this time. I tried it today and it was probably my best wavy day yet. I started cg last July until September... it was too much work for my hair to look that bad. But with the moisture in the air all the blow drying and flat ironing only made my hair a poofy gross mess. Thanks.

Great idea! These little tips can sometimes make a world of difference. I just tried a new gel yesterday with mixed results. I need to try the "no rake" tip and double application - I think those would have helped. I will give it a try on the next wash day. Thanks so much.

So accurate!! I bought this $2 gel (La Bella with Avocado Oil-- said it was 'max hold') at Big Lots because it was CG friendly, glycerin-free & smelled great, but it ended up providing NO hold at ALL. A few washes ago I decided to combine methods by applying it both soaking wet in the shower AND after my plop and now it works super well and gives me a great cast.

I have been following you and watched you to learn about the curl girl method (finally got the book). I have purchased some products based on your recommendations and have been practicing it now for several weeks. It's been ok, but today I watched this double application method and I used all deva curl delight products but then I put my 2nd application with the Mop Top custard. I diffused and then let it dry 100% before scrunching out the cast. It was dramatically different!! thank you so much for your vlogs. My hair is 100% better than it was 3-6 months ago.

I have seriously watched every video of yours, and some twice! I'm on week 1 of curly girl thanks to you! Your early videos looked so much like my hair except I live over in the panhandle so it's DRY over here. I plunged and bought devacurl low poo and delight conditioner along with light defining gel and wow the results after only a few applications! BUT I'm having trouble with hold, my curls look blah especially into day 2 so I am for sure going to try this!! I want to try wavemaker too so that was good to see you use! I'm struggling with some frizz as well as the limp curls after a half day but again it is DRY here! Thanks for all your content! I should so hop over to Dallas and come see you!! Lol!

Oh, I heart you! I’m so glad to know what I thought was just my weird “reapplication” of gel isn’t a freak thing that only I do. I’m also SO SO glad you brought up winter vs. summer waves... mine have been killing me lately, and I’ve tried everything that usually works to revive them. I’m thinking maybe it really is just the dew points. Also!! I LOVE Glossier! I’m in love with Cloud Paint and Boy Brow that I got for Christmas. Finally a gel that doesn’t flake but keeps my brows in check! Have you noticed that the Cloud Paint either squeezes out in a huge dollop or not at all? I keep thinking I just have Hulk hands. 🤷‍♀️ Lastly... I am wondering how on earth you’re going to handle all the fellow wavies within a 300 mile radius who want you to cut their hair now ... 🤣

My daughter has 3a hair, where I have overall wavy hair (but a mix of everything from nearly straight to 3a/3b) and I noticed when she was only like 1 that her curls are tighter in the summer. I figured it was because of the added humidity...we live in a humid location. Now that I have been allowing my waves to breath (used to wear a perpetual ponytail/perma-bun) I am looking forward to the summer months to see what my hair will do...as my hair has only been breathing for the last 6 months (all super cold weather in my area)

The Devacurl wave maker and the double application has given you some Diva waves. ;) I have tried some form of this double application of gel method, basically to tame any flyaway hair in place. I'm going to try this method because my hair needs quiet a bit of product and sometimes after I scrunch out the crunch I'm usually telling myself that I should have used more gel! You have super cute hair by the way! (: I have very fine hair and I have let it grow out and I started the curly girl method over a year ago and my hair has gotten so healthy and the curl is back!! I use to hate my curls and now I love them! (:
