My daughter has a huge dog, that was all over the place mentally and quite frightening. She has taken 3 of your course, Perfect Puppy, Recall and Loose Lead, and last week someone told her 'You are lucky to have such a placid dog'. There is nothing placid about the dog, he is now a content well trained dog and wants to please my daughter by behaving calmly.
Thank you, Will Atherton. (Never thought we'd ever have a calm dog, but Will's training does work).

The story of Shadow made me cry. We adopted a dog with a similar backstory and remember thinking about giving up. We ultimately decided to keep trying. We might be her last chance as she had most likely been passed from family to family because she was a beautiful husky, with trauma from being beaten. We still have her today, and she is a happy husky. She was the first of our pack of huskies. We now have 3 huskies and one corgi. They are such a great pack of dogs and your videos helped us ensure we provide a great home and family for them. Thank you for what you do and sharing your journey.

@@DG-zv4bl even pugs, who seem to have the reputation of just being a lap dog. My family adopted a pug puppy 1.5 years ago and they too need tons of exercise and brain stimulation. Buddy gets so many walks and stimulation. I too cannot imagine my life without a dog. My oldest malinois rocky is a legitimate hero who saved dozens of lives during an attempted terrorist attack years ago in Europe. He has a better personality than I do. I will never treat him as if hes just another animal because hes not. He is a special case, and i will always love him like a brother because he is a fellow combat veteran

I felt the end of the video
My dog showed me how to be happy again when I felt the worst.
He wasn't easy to train and I made a lot of mistakes. But we learned and grew together.
He might be "just" an animal but he did something no human could have done and I don't know where I would be now without him.

Production quality: A+ Owning a dog: priceless

    • @dan_kay
      @dan_kay 3 місяці тому

Owning a dog? Meaningless. Everybody can own anything in this world.
Having a dog following you around without you having to say anything? Seeing that dog trusting you 110%? The dog choosing you over his playmates? Priceless.
But none of that comes with ownership. Only with leadership.

I once had a "Sulley". She was the first dog to ever 'get under my skin' in a good way. She went through several moves, a couple of deaths, living in cramped spaces, and finally she ended up with tumors. I had to put her down in 2020 and wasn't allowed to bring another dog into my rental space.
Now, I'm moving to my daughter's land to live with them. She found a Gold-a-dore for me. She is Charlotte. I am looking forward to seeing her in a few weeks.
Thanks for your training tips. I hope to help her be an obedient dog. I love your channel.

Bravo, Will. You ROCK. This is how we give a dog the respect they deserve. They give us so much, it vital that we give them what they need in a way that THEY get. In this way, it’s not about our needs and our understanding…it’s about the dog. ❤

I needed this. Despite still grieving the loss of my Beagle, Harley, a family member that lives with me decided to go out and get a puppy for my daughters despite my protests due to not being ready. No regard for her breed which is Australian Shepherd/Alaskan Klee Kai mix, she just got her because she’s “cute” which she is but breed is a major factor. Our Beagle couldn’t maintain recall despite how hard we worked and ultimately led to her demise which gave my husband and I PTSD from her accident. So now I’m stuck with an absolutely wild 6 month old puppy that has already broken her Fibula just by jumping around. She’s so smart but also so high energy which is hard for me to handle as someone with Narcolepsy and other issues. However I don’t plan to quit on her and I’m working on bonding with her. Some days I still cry because I miss our Harley girl, but August has a special personality too and established herself as our new best friend. We will get there but seeing this truly helped remind me that I only get so many years with these wonderful souls, she deserves to have them count.

Im epileptic, if I’m going to be ill-my dog won’t let me go out; he tells me by refusing a walk he always loves. I collapsed out once not long ago-he sat right beside me until I recovered enough to get home. It’s not the only time he’s done this. He too saved my life at a dark dark time. Recently a group of people with horrid reactive dogs have banded together and lied about him - I asked Will for help. He never got back - his team just sent me a link for a course I don’t need and couldn’t afford anyway.
    Thanks Will.

I loved this, thank you, I can personally relate. Our family loves and has had several dogs over the last 35 plus years, all large breed including Akita and German shepherd. All of them stable behavior, and obedience trained by us, but not to any kind of competitive level. Awesome family dogs, well mannered. And then…..the kids are gone……I’m retired and I get a new German shepherd puppy expressly to train to stretch myself and have some fun and possibly compete in obedience. Off we go to a trainer at least once a week where the focus is on training for fast sits, perfect heels etc. But this pup has some anxiety issues. Because of her breeding? Maybe. Because of my pressure to do well? Likely didn’t help. So now as she grows, her anxiety really shows up and the original trainer doesn’t do behaviour training so off to someone else for assistance…..and then someone else….all have different opinions. Long and short of story, I blame myself. I appreciate the help the trainer gave me to see how to develop a good sit through timing etc. I should however have listened to myself when questioning how my pups anxiety was developing even though the trainer didn’t want to deal. I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO MY DOG. and no, we didn’t give her up. We have worked with her. And she is loving, and loyal and doing much better. Even though I made mistakes with her that I ended up working really hard to bring her back from.

WIll, what a great video, you put out here. It has a strong message, doesn't shy away to show vulnerability, honest , shows true love towards dogs , shows the real value they are to us humans, isn't afraid to confront all those that believe "positive only training" is the only way , while it simply does not respect a dogs nature. All they really ask for is a human that is fair with them, they can trust and look up to, that gives clear signals both positive and boundaries, that doesn't show hesitation, so they can find balance.
The video was so well made, the message was strong. Thank you

I am older now in early 70s and want a dog again but I know a huge dog would not be reasonable. I have looked through previous videos of yours and did not see a specific one directed toward ownership for older people. Oh my goodness that was beautiful. That poor pitbull who had his ears cropped thats awful with kitchen scissors 😢 I have always struggled a bit myself with my mental health a bit, I have found that I seem to get along with animals better than most people. Even as a child I dogs and cats were just drawn to me and me to them. I'll never forget Champion and Shadow my neighbors dogs when I was about 10 years old. They had one strike left they were deemed vicious and one more incident would've had them put down. I don't know what it was that made them the way they were but I was the only one who could do anything with them. They were like 2 docile puppies with me. I have no idea what happened to them ultimately but they were very large German shepherd and a German shepherd Husky mix. I have loved the misunderstood and feared breeds my whole life but fell in love the pitbull and Rottweiler breeds. I have a pit and a likely Boxer hound mix and have been taking care of a couple Rottweilers that lost their owner but always have been outside sadly. I have been able to befriend them and they love my inside dogs too. They were never interactive with people until my boys and I started very slowly working with them. They have their own shed with a bunch of straw and food and water and we can pet them now and interact and they give us so much love and appreciation in return. I am so glad to give these animals the love they deserve. I hope that one day I can get them to actually come inside but for now I'm gonna do everything I can and continue to work with them. We've already made a ton of progress.

Nice video. I feel dogs are too good for humans. They're such loyal and loving animals with such a capacity for emotion, so the idea that they are often treated as belongings that are given up, abandoned and abused is heartbreaking. Dogs don't have the intelligence of a human but I they can suffer just as deeply and have very similar family / pack social structures, so I don't see any distinction between dogs and humans when it comes to empathy - of course you can't see things exactly as they do, but there are huge parallels in their experience of the world that at the very least should allow us to treat them with the same compassion as we would a person.

Dogs are not just animals; they are something very special, probably the best thing that can walk beside a human. Since I separated from my friends and spent more time with my dog, I have realized how valuable someone can be who understands you, loves you as you are, and does not criticize you. Dogs love you for who you are and are probably the only ones who do so honestly. That's why they unfortunately don't live as long, because we humans don't even deserve them, actually.

Hey everyone. I need some help...
I love dogs and always dreamed of having one.
I got this beautiful 4M old Labrador and let me tell you guys something. It’s been an absolute hell. Don’t get me wrong, I like the dog. But it’s been a real challenge.
I never expected that owning a dog was going to be this time consuming. I can’t find time for myself even if I tried and because of that, I’m beginning to develop panic attacks…
I feel like the worst person in the world, but I’m thinking of giving my dog away.
If I’m being totally honest here, because of all the stress and the panic attacks, I’m beginning to dislike the dog. I truly don’t know what to do and need some guidance.
My goal here is to give this dog the life that she deserves. So please, help me.

Humans need dogs as much as dogs need humans. That is to say, a lot.

I believe my dogs have all been more than just animals and have at times been the reason I’ve continued hammering away at life when I felt like quitting. I also believe that we ourselves are not animals. We have the ability to see what is right and what is wrong and decide which path to choose. We have also the ability to become master of all the things around us. Because of this we have the responsibility to treat dogs with respect and kind leadership. I believe we were created by God to have dominion over all the earth. Genesis 1:26

I hope some of these dog daddies and mommies are watching this video. Dogs are not our children, they are our companions

Ah, the problem is in the word 'just' in the title. There is nothing 'just' about dogs. I reckon the training principles pretty much apply to raising children too.

Dogs are just animals, but then humans are just another breed of animals.. Just treat yoru dog the same way that you treat your other friends.
