My boy, Whiskey, has 2 different recalls. 😃
"Come!" = come directly to sitting in heel position and wait for further instruction.
"Let's go!" = you still have freedom to have fun, but need to circle back closer to my vicinity. OR I'm starting to head this way and you should be too!

Never repeat your dog's recall word. Say it once and if your dog doesn't come right away, then pop the leash and move backwards quickly. Your dog can end up with emotional baggage to that word if you keep repeating it....they won't take it as seriously. I had to change my dogs recall word once before because her old word she wouldn't always come to. This is the way I was taught to teach my dog recalls. She's on e collar now and will recall every time. 😊

I immediately got my puppy accustomed to a particular whistle for recall. I take her to the dog park almost daily. She was 50ftout playing with another dog. She heard someone else whistling a similar whistle and she came running to me and immediately sat in heel position. So also know to come if she’s called by her too.

Also, when you are introducing a new command , you actualy Do have to repeat the command so that your dog learns to attach the word to the action… And it’s also important to know the difference when your dog is engaged and when they’re not! If your dog is fully distracted, again, that’s another example of when you’re gonna need to repeat the command more than once … “Idealy” you’d want your dog to react to your commands on the first time, but that’s not always realistic… and it also takes a lot of practice and repetition as well! If you Never use the command and then u end up at the park one day and you are calling your dog when it’s playing with another dog.. you cannot expect it to react to your command … ! The important thing is that the dog is engaged and learning! Not so much the amount of times u call the command before they learn it!
Not to mention, after giving the command, it’s always best to praise them while Telling them what it is you are praising them For … For instance “ Heel” … and as they are doing it… “ Good Heel” ! And lastly, when it comes to dogs and training… it is NEEEEVER just black and white!! Every Dog is different, Every dog’s Experience is different, Every breed is different, Every Owner/ Family is different and each one of them all have their own set of expectations , and every trainer is different!
That’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned from working with all kinds of ppl w Dog training! And it’s always one of my main questions during the intake is to find out essentialy what brought them to me… what issues do they have if any… and what their “Expectations” are ! What are they looking for in their dog’s behaviour and then we work on giving them the right tools to have them achieve their goals! While keeping in mind that dog’s breed and certain pre-disposed behaviours that some might have… weather they are a family dog.. working dog.. lap dog .. etc etc ! And what are THEIR needs as well! But All in all, Communication is The the Most important Component to your relationship with your dog!! And to say that you’re Never gonna give a command more than once… Espeeecialy in a training setting… It’s extremely Unrealistic ! You can”t always listen to “Old Wives’ Tales” … “ things like “ Don’t feed them table food” ( Kibble is LOAAADED w Preservatives and the MAIN “Cause” of all doggy Ilnesses and Disease out there!! Same thing w these things! You want to be able to give your dog a command Once … You are gonna need to put in the work and have a good relationship with him! It’s also equally important to keep training sessions short and effective as well! Once your dog starts to loose interest it’s time to shut it down for the time beeing ! Those things are Waaaaay more important than Never repeating a command! Engagement, practice , consistency, and obviously Communication !

I wish I could find one that was a little bit more resilient. My 1 yr old Aussie has chewed through his about 4 times already, in about 0.002 seconds each time! Like, incredibly fast. He’s not even a chewer, just something about the long line being there on the ground when trying to work with him, he finds it and chews it SO FAST.

Have you tried a biothane leash ? They're very durable and easier to keep clean! We use our biothane long line every day and sometimes Whiskey feels playful with it, so I make a bundle of it and play a bit of tug! Not sure how it holds up against direct chewing, but it's supposedly some really tough stuff. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Tom and/NBD family... being an inexperienced puppy parent I think I gave my boy too much freedom too soon so indoors he will come but on& especially off leash OUTDOORS he will not come back until he's ready. I've even tried an e collar but without success. It actually seemed to just make him more defiant and I was afraid to traumatize him so stopped after the 2nd day. Any suggestions are appreciated 🙏 He's 10mos old and already 65lbs n strong TYSVM for all you do so genuinely and generously 🤩❣️

Working on this with my bagel!
    It is so hard !!
I live in a dangerous place, on a Mountain in the woods. Lots of wild animals predators, and farmers that will shoot if he were to runoff and chase the rabbits or chickens or their livestock stock. He’s harmless and wouldn’t hurt them but very curious. I told all the neighbors know he is mine if I see him please do not shoot. It is very scary not having him come when called.
He is Houdini, and always escapes.
We even escaped are 5 foot fencing! He didn’t go under it he must’ve gone over.
And he had to first escaped his heavy duty chain that is installed under ground without his collar coming off. I don’t know how he does it.!!

Immediately, you want to start with crate, puppy name and potty. I gave my puppy a week to get comfortable in her new home, then I started doing 3x 10 minutes sections each day teaching basics, sit, down, leave it and stay and loose leash walking primarily focused at first on general leash manners, stay on one side and not crossing in front of me. The key is consistency. My girl is 17 weeks and we’re already working on off leash. However, if your pup isn’t there at that age that’s fine, every dog is different and I have years of training experience. Again, patience, confidence and consistency is main importance to get your pup to a stable, happy trained family member

I use one word commands all the time. I try not to use more than that. But there are a couple of commands that is more than one word. But not a lot. One word commands work better with my dog. She understands me better. I say stay, she stays, I say front, she sits in front of me, I say side and then tap my hip, she comes and stands by my side and then I put my hand in front of her face and that means for her to sit.
She knows over 30 commands and hand signals. She also understands certain areas. When I say grass, she goes into the grass. That keeps her out of the road. When I say home, she knows we're going home. When I say door, she knows to go to the door and wait. The only problem I have with her, fetch. She will not fetch. She doesn't like balls. When she tears of a toy that has a ball inside, she will not play with it.
She will kind of fetch, but she'll only fetch twice. No more. She'll sit there and look at the object and then look at me and just sit there. I've tried every trick in the book, everything that I can think of on my own, she just won't fetch. I need her to fetch because I have health issues that cause me to drop things. I have a bad back that makes it hard to bend over to pick up things from the floor. This is the only problem I'm really having with her. The other problem I was having with her, was her pulling. I have been working with her a lot lately and she's improved a lot. She's a smart girl and she loves to work. She lets me know when she wants to work too. One thing, she's actually treat motivated. The more important commands, she will do without treats. Minor commands, she wants a treat AKA cookie. She's the best dog I've ever had.
I brought her home when she was 10 weeks old. By the time she was 6 months old, she knew all her basic commands and more. That dog is so freaking smart! That's why her name is Tesla. Best dog ever!

What do you do with a dog who in most situations has great recall but if she gets locked onto something like another dog or a person they don’t listen. It feels really random when she does it. Tonight I let her out of her pen outside to bring her inside and she ran to the neighbors to bark at their dog through the fence. Most nights we’re fine and she goes directly inside no problem but sometimes maybe a month or two or three will go by and then one night she decides to do this. I sat there and yelled her name until i was blue in the face but until she calmed down and realized I was calling she just stayed locked on to that other dog. It’s not all the time though, most of the time she’s fine we play fetch off leash outside and she can see that same dog while we’re playing and she listens great. If I can’t get it figured out soon I may have to rehome her which breaks my heart because I’ve had her since she was a puppy and she’s 5 now. But I’m moving somewhere where this behavior can not happen.
