“Exposure is the key to eradicate ignorance.” - I absolutely love this and agree! You are right that many people are exposed to things they see on the media which can be heavily portrayed in a negative way to fit a specific narrative. However, if they explore and experience with their own eyes and have an open mind, they will be able to change their minds on things.

I have to apologize - Speaking as an Asian man, a lot of Asians here aren't very cultured or educated about other non Asian cultures. Not necessarily a knock but we can be insular. I wish that people knew more about the Middle East and Lebanon (and the people, they are beautiful)! My best friend is from there, but he was shocked when I told him he looked "less Arab" because he probably has roots from Europe or ancient Phoenicians. The "Arab look" mixed in after the Islamic conquests.
There are many M Eastern countries with women ministers but I can't name a single Presisdent or PM. All the Muslim women leaders were in countries further west, east, like Pakistan or south in Africa.

Filial piety is generally something that all Eastern cultures cherish regardless of religious affiliation. The modern dating paradigm of serial dating is more or less an anomaly that's exclusive to the West. Chastity has always been super important (for both men and women). And a lot of it has to do with familial reputation. I'm sure you're familiar with the phenomenon of 'honor killings,' which is a practice that's prevalent in the Arab world. Collectivist-oriented thinking has always been the status quo in the East. In terms of religion, I know that the Middle East is quite intolerant towards non-Muslims (with few exceptions, like the UAE). There's a fairly prominent Lebanese professor, Gad Saad, who recounted his childhood of escaping Lebanon during the civil war, and he would constantly bring up the fact that Lebanese authorities would stop people at checkpoints to ask for their ID because religion governed the law. He talked about how people had to fear for their lives if their ID showed anything other than Islam. And of course, Christians, Jews, and other non-Muslims have historically been forced to flee the Middle East for fear of persecution. Much of the Arab world is governed by Sharia law. I think that's where the assumption about women being oppressed stems from. There is a lot of truth to it because women are de jure categorized as second-class citizens. The Mahsa Amini protests in Iran a couple of years ago was probably one of the most notable examples of this. Women in countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia have no choice but to don a hijab in public. The so-called 'morality police' can exercise authority to enforce such rules.

When I meet a Lebanese person, I just assume they're Christian unless they prove otherwise. Obviously, if I'm ordering food, I will ask if they keep Halal or not.
