    Z bars are my favorite for chopper or bobber. I'm craving beer and busted knuckles. Great project!!

      Thanks Robin, if you're looking to learn a bit more about it then you might like this video..

      And as soon as I've got something that needs wiring without being too weird, I'll have some more videos on it.

    Loving the videos. I have little to no fabrication skills but I hope to bob my suzuki bandit. Your videos are very inspiring, hopefully I'm up to the challenge.

      Thanks, I'm trying to get some more made but events seem to be conspiring against me. Dunno if you've tripped over it already but I've got a video slideshow of a Suzuki 600 build I did?

      Not a bandit obviously, but much the same bits and bobs.

      @@BuiltatBlackjacks yeah, cool build, I like the bug eyed look.

    I really appreciate you making this video. The only question I have is about the charging system, in this current set up will this ultimately drain the battery?

  • @ryanharaughty2860
    @ryanharaughty2860 12 днів тому

    Will it ultimately need the leads to the charging system wired up to maintain the 12v source

    • @BuiltatBlackjacks
      @BuiltatBlackjacks  11 днів тому

      The XS650 is a bit of an odd ball in that it has a field effect alternator which needs a 12v feed to it to "energise" the field coils to create a magnetic field so it can generate the AC output. So there's plenty more involved in the wiring, but the point was that we got the engine fired up without all that. No good if you want to ride it, helpful if its an engine you dragged out from under a bench.

    Looking for something like this for a long time for my xs400. No regulator or rectifier?

    • @BuiltatBlackjacks
      @BuiltatBlackjacks  Рік тому

      This was strictly wiring the ignition system so it could be fired up because we were selling it, and stuff sells better if people know it runs. Is your XS400 points ignition? you'll need a charging circuit if you're planning on riding it anywhere, I think the XS400 used a combined regulator rectifier rather than separate boxes, but either way you can buy a combined reg/rec that'll work quite happily. Thin you might be better off with this video though...

    My 650 has points with the 2 wires (orange and gray) condenser 2 wires (both black) and a coil
    It's a dual output with only 2 wires (yellow and black) haven't been able to figure out how to make it work...

    • @BuiltatBlackjacks
      @BuiltatBlackjacks  2 роки тому

      Some XS650's have a "wasted spark" set up with only one set of points and one coil. What happens there is that each piston fires on each upward stroke, I.E on the top of the compression stroke AND on the the exhaust stroke. You've got the coil for a wasted spark set up and the points of the individual spark set up. If you get a pair of coils you can set it up like this one, or you might be able to get the points cam for the wasted spark set up and only use one set of points with the dual coil. Id buy the the coils. Hope that helps.

    Did you touch the carbs?
    I have a xs650 that hasn’t been started in 10 years

    • @BuiltatBlackjacks

      Pete pulled the carbs apart and checked them out, but other than a spray with carb cleaner that was all they got. If yours was parked with fuel in the carbs, then they might need a better clean than that. It always helps to run the carbs dry when storing a bike.

      @@BuiltatBlackjacks thanks for the reply, I will pull the carbs and give them a good clean. Luckily it was left with a full tank and stored somewhat properly.

      Short version, no. Longer version, I don't make them as production pieces, when I make one it's a one off, and these days I write about making or make videos about making them far more often than I make one.
