Welcome to Blackjack's. This is where I generate content that's mostly custom motorcycle based, or to put it another way I'm ruining perfectly good motorcycles as my Dad likes to call it. I'm going to be building things, I'll be doing some "how-to's", I'll be looking at some tools, and from time to time (once the sun's out and lockdown is over) maybe even a few bike videos.
Hang around, it's moderately interesting. :-)

How To Make Exhaust Baffles
OK, you can buy these, but where ever you're buying them from won't have an infinite choice of sizes and lengths, and I've seen them at some pretty ridiculous prices. I needed to hush the CX500 up a bit, so I videoed making the baffles.

Fault Finding CDI Ignitions on Dirt Bikes, Quads, and ATVs
Переглядів 342Місяць тому
Fault chasing a lack of spark on a CDI ignition on an XR125, and building a Peak Voltage Adapter to measure the pick up output and the CDI box's output to the coil. This is a DC CDI, but the same applies to an AC CDI, and works for quads, ATV's and scooters. There's a circuit diagram for the peak voltage adapter on the community page.

How To Fix The Vevor Shrinker/Stretcher

This was going to be a video about using a shrinker/stretcher to make a mudguard. But it didn't work out that way because first, I had to fix the brand new shrinker/stretcher. I could have sent it back, but it's the cheapest one I could find, so fixing it made more sense to me than spending double the money on a different version of the same thing.

I have a 2012 sym 50cc scooter need to wire it thank you
Your scooter might have Capacitor Discharge Ignition not Computetised Digital Ignition. That's a little different. If one side of the Ignition coil is grounded it's Capacitor Discharge. If that's the case it's either DC CDI powered from the battery or AC CDI powered ftom the alternator. I've got a video on fault finding those with a sketch of the general wiring layout here. ua-cam.com/video/mfj3sMCHPAk/v-deo.htmlsi=pGyChKeMXRSYYSDw
For the most part I usually cut 3/4 in slits in the tube then just punch them down so they just disturb and redirect the air flow, is the math really that important with what are non standard pipes anyway?
Not really important, as long as you're not introducing a restriction. All that does is keep exhaust gas in the cylinder and leads to incomplete combustion.
Baffled?
Seldom. :-)
What about a wiring diagram for the PVA
I'll have a circuit diagram on my community page by Monday. 👍
@BuiltatBlackjacks brilliant
Handy video as I am trying to fault intermittent ignition on a honda hornet.
@warwickbarnes9428 think a hornet is going to be a conventional ignition, not a capacitor discharge ignition? The term CDI is confusing as orinally it meant an ignition system where the coil is fired by discharging a capacitor and firing between 100 and 400 volts though the coil. Conventional ignition works by supplying 12 volts to the coil and then collapsing the magnetic field this builds up by turning off the 12 volts, which induces a high voltage current in the secondary winding of the coil and that creates the spark. So capacitor discharge ignition works by sending a high voltage pulse to the coil, conventional ignition works by switching off a relatively low voltage to the coil. The confusion arises because once conventional ignition moved away from switching the power off by means of a set of points, and started switching it off by means of electronics, sone bright spark (pun intended) decided to call it computerised digital ignition, or CDI for short. I think your Hornet runs conventional ignition that's triggered electronically, which sometimes gets called a CDI but isn't a capacitor discharge set up like the XR125. I've got a video titled something like "Custom wiring metric CDIs" that will probably be more use to you?
@@BuiltatBlackjacks I agree, but your peak voltage device can be used on the pickup coil to give a value that a standard digital volt meter is going to struggle to measure. Also it will work on the low voltage switched side of the coil as it is electronic you cannot measure anything unless it is cranking, you can look at the waveform with an oscilloscope if you have one. Points you can manually operate them to verify they are working. I understand that the peak voltage measurement in the dirt bike application is to verify that there is power to supply the coil in the first place, while the honda hornet has a battery supplying the power for the coil. The peak measurement can be used elsewhere in the ignition system.
Glad you weren't seriesly hurt bro
Thanks man. Got to say that makes two of is. 😁
Im here for a recap after frantically having to disconnect the neg from my battery earlier today with smoke filling up my shed and the negative melting
That's not good. 😳
Any chance a 2 stroke Yamaha blaster’s 5-wire cdi box is compatible with my 2-stroke Yamaha rt100 ? It has the same amount of wires
And is significantly cheaper..
No idea. What I'd do, apart from asking a few people who deal with a lot of RT100's is have a look at the factory parts diagrams (you can usually find those on line) and check the part no's out for the pickups, and alternator windings for both, see if there's any commonality.
@@BuiltatBlackjacks thank you!! I was trying to fix a no spark issue. Ended up being the kill switch lol
@@cozyjed yup, that'll do it...
Very nice video tutorial. Look forward to more.
Thanks. There are a couple more videos that deal with the finer details? Once I get things a bit more under control, I'm hoping to do a video which shows it being put it into practice.
Nice video, minimal exotic tools, how to get around a bench / floor that isnt level was useful to info. Guess you could scribe the knurl lines if you dont have a lathe. The angles you used for the drop and pull back, are these a industry standards or are these values that you have found to work.
I think I edited it out, but you can get hand held knurling tools. I believe you can buy the wheels so you could make the rest. The angles I use are ones I arrived at, but for bars where your arms are pretty much straight out in front of you and shoulder height or below, turns out to be more or less what everyone uses plus or minus a degree or two. That said I once made a set of flat bars for a Softail I used to own and bent up three sets before I was happy. Same 15 degrees back, but moving the bend along the bar alters the reach when you're sat on it? Once I was happy I bent up set number 4 in stainless. 😁
Entertaining and educational. Thanks 😁
Glad you enjoyed it. :-)
Are you working on the floor because all the crap off the floor is now on the bench?😂
Nope, just the bench wasn't long enough...

Ummmm, no. Unicorn Heads I think.
In this kind of videos, there's always a Yamaha as an example. 😅🤣
I do seem to wire up a fair number of Yamaha ignition systems. Mostly FJ 12s and XS650s. But then again they're pretty popular builds.
My 2-stroke Rotax has a single pickup, two coils and two cylinders, which aftermarket cdi can I use as a replacement?
No idea. Mostly I build chops and bobber and not a lot of those use Rotax ring dingers. Have you tried Googling it?
@@BuiltatBlackjacks Yes, I came up with MSD 4255 but need to research it. Could be this Rotax pickup gets triggered twice/revolution, firing both coils simultaneously (like wasted spark).
@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 you said it's a 2 stroke? All 2 strokes fire once per crank revolution so yes the pick up will trigger the CDI every time and the CDI will fire both coils. Assuming it's a single? Dual plugs in a single cylinder generally means faster flame front propagation so more fuel gets burnt, meaning cleaner emissions and more power.
@@BuiltatBlackjacks Definitely a two cylinder. A cylinder fires each 180 degrees of crank rotation. I'm just not sure if the CDI trigger is rung twice/rev. That would suggest a single coil could be used and that's not the case. Guess I need to put a timimg light on it...
@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 yeah, sorry missed the two cylinder bit in your first. 🙄 What can I say, it gets busy round here. Just fitted a CDI to a CX 500 that appears to have been designed for 2 strokes and is programmable for advance curves etc. Basically turned up in a box and I fitted it. If you get stuck I could probably dig out the info on it.
My cdi has 8 pin outs for a 1985 Yamaha virago 1000. Anyone know where I can buy one or how to test it?
Why does it need testing? If it's not working you're better off starting by testing the wiring, check for continuity from one end to the other, check nothing is shorting to ground that isn't supposed to. If you mean you need to know which pin does what, do a search for a "pin out" diagram for the unit. Bear in mind the plug is wired as the mirror image if you're looking at it head on, and that can make pin out diagrams confusing.
Just been wondering what I was doing wrong with my Vevor shrinker stretcher as it didn't seem to work properly - now I know. Thanks very much.
Youre welcone. I've since pulled it apart again and given the bit where the handle bears against the arm that squeezes the dies together a session on the belt sander and radiused it. I think the corners were clashing occasionally. You can hear it in the video.
Like the music on this
I think it's called Mer-Ka-Ba by Jesse Gallagher. I found it in the UA-cam audio library. He has a UA-cam channel if you do a search, the track is on there.
Hi Blackjack, nice video. Got a couple of questions if you have any ideas. Picked up a Kawasaki klf400 quad and was not getting spark. The CDI unit has been replaced previously with a chinese unit to try and get it going. All of the colours matched up with a wiring diagram I found online - (bk/w + bl) pickup, (bk/w) ground, (y/r) 12v from engine cutout, (r/w) 12v from ignition switch?, (g/w) output to coil. Wasn't getting any results, power and grounds were testing where I expected them other than the R/W which was being pulled down to around 4v. I put 12v straight onto it and pretty sure I blew the unit, testing between the live to ignition switch and the r/w it seems there is a kiloohm resistor in there. Do you think it's possible that should have been a ground connection rather than the 12v I had on it? Second question, there is a third box beside the rectifier and CDI unit that shares a connection with the coil output from the CDI, it's labelled "control unit" on the diagram and has something to do with the carburettor heater. I take it this just turns the heater on if its seeing spark? Cheers
Want to email me the diagram? I can have a look. Address is on the channel page.

Could you build me a custom ignition system for a 125cc scooter???
Well, geography might be an issue? What's,wrong with the stock set up?
Do you even need a cdi if you use a m unite blue ?
Yes you do. All an M unit Blue does is to control the stuff like lights and indicators. It'll control power to the ignition, basically switching the CDI on or off but that's it.
Thanks for sharing your talent with us. Fantastic.
No problem, glad you liked it. :-)
Thanks for these , just the right mix of practical and theory. Brilliant. keep em coming
Thanks. When I get a minute I'm planning on building a rigid something applying all of that. Just been a bit too busy lately... 🙄
I see these CDI boxes online for fairly cheap. I'm wondering if they're basically universal and work across different brands and size engines... as long as the plug / pin configuration are the same as what I currently have?
Unlikely. "CDI" gets used for capacitor discharge ignition and computer digital ignition and they're profoundly different, even the coils are different. Ignition timing needs to alter as the engine speeds up, sometimes this is done mechanically, sometimes it's done electronically in the "CDI" box. So there's more to it than just having a dandie CDI box.
Stick welding possible? 😔
Bottom line there is really if you have to ask, then no. I will say when I was a kid, my Dad did some pretty radical surgery to some frames building me dirt bikes using an arc welder. The important thing to remember there though is that he knew he was good enough with a stick welder (big old oil cooled arc welder too) to do the job safely enough for his 12 year old kid to beat the crap out of around a field. I do see a lot of Indonesian guys building small chops using stick welders on the other hand. If, for some reason I felt the need to stick weld a frame, I'd design the frame with as many straight welds as possible, so a rectangular box section top tube for instance so you had long straight, flat welds either side of the head stock, that sort of thing.
@@BuiltatBlackjacks thank you for your knowledge. I have never undertaken such a task, but I would like to at some point in the future. So I will wait until I have a new set up. Thank you again.

Have an 82 virago, was running then stopped all of a sudden, can’t get spark no matter what I try, Also have 2 dc cdis I thought would work as there is 4 pickup coil wires 2 for each coil, can’t get it working, any advice?
If it was me, I'd get a multimeter and a manual and check for power at the igniter, then do a resistance check on the pick ups, then I'd check for continuity between the pick ups and the plug on the Virago igniter just to eliminate any wiring faults and the pick ups as those are just as likely to be faults. The problem with using something else is that unless you have a mechanical advance, then the ignition advance is going to be wrong, meaning somewhere between a lack of power and a hole in a piston. The Japanese have a habit of calling capacitor discharge ignition and computer digital ignition by the CDI acronym, they're very different down to the ignition coils, your "DC CDIs" sound like they might be capacitior discharge, pretty sure the Virago is Computer digital, so not going to work. However, it is possible to repair the Virago black box, seems they have a habit of offing the transistors that switch the coils. There are places that offer a repair service for them, or you could try somewhere that does computer repairs like this guy did.. www.google.com/search?q=Virago+igniter+repair&sca_esv=e9f3e6ede1937afe&sca_upv=1&source=hp&ei=ZrCwZu-lO9ahhbIPpZLs-QM&iflsig=AL9hbdgAAAAAZrC-d0q2qWOUNmCP8M9Le5LwUqNhVn4g&ved=0ahUKEwjv8Lz92N2HAxXWUEEAHSUJOz8Q4dUDCBk&uact=5&oq=Virago+igniter+repair&gs_lp=Egdnd3Mtd2l6IhVWaXJhZ28gaWduaXRlciByZXBhaXIyBRAhGKABMgUQIRigAUjaMlDNCVilMHABeACQAQCYAdIBoAGWDaoBBjIwLjAuMbgBA8gBAPgBAZgCFqACpg6oAgrCAhAQABgDGOUCGOoCGIwDGI8BwgIQEC4YAxjlAhjqAhiMAxiPAcICERAuGIAEGLEDGNEDGIMBGMcBwgIUEC4YgAQYsQMY0QMYgwEY1AIYxwHCAg4QLhiABBixAxiDARiKBcICDhAuGIAEGLEDGNEDGMcBwgIFEAAYgATCAgsQLhiABBjRAxjHAcICCxAAGIAEGLEDGIMBwgIIEAAYgAQYsQPCAggQLhiABBixA8ICCxAuGIAEGMcBGK8BwgIFEC4YgATCAg0QABiABBixAxhGGPkBwgIGEAAYFhgewgIIEAAYFhgeGA_CAgUQIRifBcICBxAhGKABGAqYAwqSBwYyMS4wLjGgB8ygAQ&sclient=gws-wiz#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:ace32682,vid:y8dt_w3FTpo,st:0

Yep the germans like black to be battery positive, excellent colour choice there.
It is true that many people just automatically assume that black is a ground wire. You can only assume they've never wired a Chinese LED light in...

Whats this on?
@@BuiltatBlackjacks 1995 1200xl sportster
The 30 amp breaker has the output from the regulator (red) and a wire to the ignition switch (also red) on one side, the black wire from the starter goes to the other terminal according to the diagrams I've looked at. You said the black wire from the starter is hot with the ignition on? Should be hot all the time since it's what actually sends power to the ignition switch???

Never wired an FZR100, so I'm guessing here, but if it runs, chances are it's not the Igniter Box, maybe a bad connection? If you have a diagram, my e-mail is on here, I can have a look at it, but no promises...
