Heard a story years ago about an old lady in the US who drove a manual.A couple of youngsters tried to steal her car while she was unloading her shopping.They gave up because they had no idea how to drive.

Jon Scott yeah that’s true, there needs to be a lot more tech implemented into the cars so a lot of the more simplistic designs cannot be remade, but hey, maybe in the future! You never know what’s in store.

You're playing odds. The truth of the matter is this: If a thief is motivated enough, he *WILL* take what's yours. If he can't accomplish that by stealth, he'll do it by caving in your skull with something heavy and blunt, or some similar brute force means. Fortunately, the ones THAT motivated are not nearly as numerous as the ones who will take a car because it looks easy. Best defense against car thieves: drive something they're not interested in.

I feel they will not stop using manual anytime soon. Old manual cars are mechanically simpler, and can be serviced and overhauled in third world countries with little difficulty. Newer technologies are still immature and complicated and thus less reliable with frequent sensor problems, and over-reliance on computers and complex technologies will have an adverse impact in supply and repair. With current events, people should notice these issues in time. It is almost like right to repair is getting itself put out with the extreme complexity of favored products. If you wanted the right, you should use it frequently instead of getting lazy and unknowingly handing the right to someone else, because that would be too late. It is almost like the like of Chavez did not succeed because of this very reason. The cost is lower, unless you live in Hong Kong. This is a big deal because most of the world is not enthusiastic about dumping extra expense into something, and most actually cannot afford the extra cost. IMO the manual car is a great liberator of the people behind scooters, and the very reason that they were is their unique trait of economy and simplicity that is something difficult to replace. Even more so when against EVs in their current form, because just the lithium had to travel around the world multiple times, and only Japan among a few others can make Li batteries properly. I believe there are more arguments in the realm of sensibility and practicality, but these are the ones I can think of now.

THEY, its not the driver, in the future we will probably have cars that can drive on their own properly unlke at the moment and have cars purely computer driven that drive around race tracks faster than a person could. but if youre not driving and you want to be in control... thats a bad thing. would you rather watch a race where you always know guaranteed that a certain car will win because it started the race in first place and not a single place will be lost for anyone the entire race or a race of humans with flaws and you can become completely blindsided by what happens during the race? being good at doing the work of shifting yoruself quickly and smoothly is incredibly rewarding, sure pressing down the gas and having the kickdown shift down is great fun but its not your skill. ive got a manual and an automatic they are both fun in their own way but the manual is more rewarding in the long run.

Chevy didn't advertise the SS. They can't expect people to buy something if NO ONE HEARS ABOUT IT. If you build it, they will come, but you gotta SPREAD THE WORD! Same goes for almost all the other automakers not advertising their fun, sporty, manual cars!
They should have come up with a better name too. The first time I heard about it I though they were talking about the SS Camaro. SS is a package on a Chevy car, not a car.
Manuals, like news papers, magazines, and am/fm radios are the kind of thing that will continually drop in popularity yet never entirely disappear because there will always be a small group of people who still prefer them
I bought a turbo diesel 4x4 with the stock radio cassette player still built in it from the exact day it was manufactured. I've decided to never replace it with a generic CD radio and it's made me get into cassettes as a hobby. So yeah, there's always gonna be a small niche group that prefers the older, simpler things than the majority.
I’m an American and love manual. I drove it for 20 years straight. When I go to Italy every summer to visit family I always rent a car. When I go to the counter to rent it, the rental agent says, “sorry, we only have manuals to rent, taxi cabs are in the other terminal” I just laugh and say, “yea, I prefer a manual”. Some agents are shocked when I drive away without stalling. I’m sad that manuals are disappearing in the US!!
You are an American unicorn. The sales figures for new cars and the car rental history of American tourists prove that Americans overwhelmingly do not drive manual transmission cars. Not to say that you're a bad thing, it's just that the reality of freedom says Americans have clearly spoken about what is desired in American society.
I’m from England but my dad worked at GM HQ in Detroit back in the 90’s for 3 years. A few of his friends that he made out there came over to England and were staring at my Dad in amazement because he could drive a manual. But a lot of high end cars over here now are automatic like Mercedes etc.

The speeding thing is super true. Automatics are tuned for best fuel economy, all the time, which means they would keep shifting up the gears as you go downhill. In a stick you can just use one gear and the engine will manage its own speed.
You should get a 92 if you want a 1.6 car the 90 model has a small nose crankshaft and is prone for crank wobble i have a 95 my buddy has a 90 91 and 03 we had to put a big nose crank in the 91 the 90 will be next soon as we get it back from PA lol
Recently at 22yo I bought my 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 without ever driving a manual before. I knew logically what to do, but never had done it before. First couple months were rough, but now 6 months in I will never go back to an automatic for a personal car. Freaking love it!
Samesies. I bought my first manual vehicle in my early 20's and learned by myself to drive it. It was definitely rough for months. There's a lot of nuance to manual transmissions and without anyone driving with you who understands the mistakes your making it takes quite a while to sort them out.
Did the same thing w my e46, my brothers friend gave me a couple lessons before i drove down to Virginia from Chicago to buy it. Best way to learn is behind the wheel, and stalling out three times in a four way intersection will definitely make you learn fast. Two years later and it’s still one of the best decisions I’ve ever made
I'm from slovenia and here are maybe only 10% of cars automatic. I'm 35 and drove an automatic for the first time last year. Manual heaven is in europe :)

Most driving instructors drive manual transmission cars, so pretty much everyone here is taught to drive manual. Automatic is slowly becoming more common here though - my next car will probably be an automatic - but it is still considered somewhat of a luxury. It's probably due to the high tax we have on cars. We pay a premium of 85-150% in taxes for a new car, so for instance a $25.000 car in the US, would cost around $55.000 here.
I love my manual car. I am still learning to drive but I prefer the sense of command on the gear shifts over just convenience. Well manuals can get annoying in hellish levels of traffic, especially in India, but still, I feel like I'm actually doing some serious stuff. Automatic cars feel like video games. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them but I just love the feeling of a manual.
At the company we have a handful of automatics in the company fleet (mainly for international colleaques who can´t drive stick) Often German colleaques com back from the parking lot when given keys to a fleet car because they have no clue how to operate the automatic car, and demand to get a "normal car" ;)
Yeah, in Greece where people drive old cars, that's true, now come up to the Netherlands where I work, or any other central European country and you'll quickly see that a huge percentage of people drive automatics. It's come to the point that you cant buy a good car with a manual anymore, even BMW only offers its 190HP diesel with a manual, if you want a stronger engine, you have to go for an automatic. Which sucks cause now I made enough money to buy a new BMW and I'll be forced to buy a used one instead, in order to get what I want...
the manual gives you the feeling that you control the car and you are one with it...maybe some times, especially in the traffic its pain in the ass but at the end of day we love driving it
I live in Malaysia, and we have hour long traffic jams just to commute to work, and back. And if it rains, those jams can easily take 2 hours or more. An automatic gear is a godsend in traffic jams. However, I also have a 4 wheel drive to go jungle bashing as a hobby, i.e., driving deep into the tropical jungle to camp and explore. Trust me, the simpler the 4 wheel drive with a strong manual gear is a must and a literal life-saver. And I used to have a small peppy manual gear car, which I would drive on long windy country roads. The joy and trill of barrelling down the road, hitting the perfect clutch change, and playing with the gears to extract the maximum power out of a small engine always brings a smile to my face!
Everywhere outside of North America this is true. In the UK everyones learns manual and most people drive them unless they have lots of money and can afford a nice Mercedes.
I'm also German and can't confirm that. I'd say it's a good mix between automatic and manual. In my opinion, an automatic car is more convenient as a daily driver but a manual car is WAY more fun to drive.
I drove a 65 Mustang for years because it was such a fun car. Not only did it have a six cylinder engine and 3 speed manual, but it had manual steering, brakes, roll up windows and manual door locks. Try and find a new car ike that today that's actually fun to drive.
The first vehicle I got was an 01' Taco with a 2.7L I4 and a 5 speed manual. Was definitely a little weird to get used to at first when my dad was teaching me but I got it down after having to drive it almost 3000 miles across the country where I'm living now. About a month after I got here, I lost the Taco to an electrical fault that caused a cabin fire. I am now driving an 01' Eclipse GT with a five speed manual as well, and if I can, I want every car I get after to have a manual transmission if possible. They are so much fun to drive, and couldn't agree more when you're saying that it's harder to be distracted by other things while driving, making it safer. And also when saying that the experience in a manual is just amazing, with the feeling of truly being connected with your vehicle and to the road you're driving on.

To be fair, Chevy didn’t really advertise the Chevy ss. They only sold it in the first place as a deal to close the Australian Holden plant. They didn’t care about sales and would sell a lot more if they promoted it.

We’re a culture that waits for an elevator to go to the second floor opposed to take the stairs. We pay to have someone park our car opposed to walk a couple hundred feet. We leave carts in the middle of parking lots opposed to return them. We don’t rack our weights at the gym. We litter out of convenience alone. Generalizations, sure, but look around. The manual doesn’t stand a chance in the modern US.
I am a European and ive had both manual and automatic... A manual is fun to drive when you are in the mountains for example, or just in the winding roads of the countryside... But just commuting daily... I miss my automatic, its just so relaxing not to do anything except braking and giving gas. But like you said, electric or hybrid is all automatic... So eventually it will disappear from existing. Except maybe on the track.
It's true though. Being in traffic is a nightmare in my manual. After a while you get a sore left leg from constantly pushing the clutch. In an automatic you can just sit back and relax.

If you can't start your engine, in manual transmission engine, just put it on the first gear with stepping on the clutch to make it to neutral mode and push the car to let the wheels revolve, you quickly release the clutch and the engine will start. In automatic gear you just have to wait for the mechanic or leave it on the side way.
I work in the oil and gas & the mines in Australia, Auto's are just about banned and 99.99% have to be manual. Also here we have a saying, If you can't drive a manual, you can't drive.
Most of my cars over the last 55 years have been manuals. I currently have a '16 Cadillac ATS Premium (top trim) with a six-spd manual. It's quite rare. I found three with this trim on AutoTrader four years ago in the whole country. One was in Houston, and one was on Long Island. I flew to Memphis from Detroit to get the one I have and drove it 700 miles back home. What a great car! My wife thinks I'm crazy. I'm a mechanical engineer (specialized in internal combustion engines), and I'm a big BEV advocate. This may be the last manual shift I have since, as mentioned in the video, EVs have torque curves that make transmissions unnecessary. That's okay. It's been a wonderful ride.
I know you meant this as a joke, but you're probably right. With the progress techs are making on self driving cars nowadays give or take another 20 years we'll probably be watching a video like this one saying about how people are complaining about the lack of cars that don't drive themselves. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if soon electric cars became the norm here in America. What does make me happy though is that I know manuals aren't ever going to go completely out of fashion, I'm not heavily into the tune market myself, but any car that has been through my auto shop and has had aftermarket work done on it has been a manual.
@@reokado4783 I think what will happen will be the urban centers will be dominated by electric cars. There is nothing better in congested urban centers than electric cars. The suburban areas will have a mixture of diesel, petrol, and electric. The rural areas will be dominated by true 4x4 that run on diesel, natural gas, or petrol, because they will need the extra range, and rural electrical grids are not very reliable at times. As for hybrids, their days are coming to a close soon. As batteries improve there will be no need for them in the urban centers, suburbs, and they are currently worthless in the rural areas half the year anyway.

I personally love manual cars. I still have my 1997 Saturn Sc2 with a 5 speed manual. I don't think it distracts the driver either. To me, I don't even think about shifting, I just do it automatically. Just so used to it.
In Europe there is an opinion that automatic transmissions are for people that are really bad at driving so they buy a car where you only have to press gas and brake
And unlike the US, Europe doesn’t have 80% of its population living in large population-dense cities with constant traffic. If most people had to drive a manual through NYC or LA for a few weeks, they’d see exactly why Americans drive automatics.

@Bill Randall sounds like a lot of pointless gear changes going on if you're shifting several times a block while also implying stop-go traffic, you could probably not change gear at all! If your clutch is super-heavy I guess it could get tiring though I've yet to find one all that bad in any car or truck, otherwise what is it that you find hard? If you're used to it you don't even notice you are shifting, it just happens, your hands and feet know what to do.
I'm an old arthritic 72 year old geezer who has never owned an automatic car. I despise them. I am a veteran long haul driver and will not drive a truck with autoshift for the same reason. They dumb down the industry. Now you got me started! I have UA-cam videos on the joys of manual transmissions. North Americans are not interested. It takes practice and skill to drive them well, and most are just too lazy to learn, and I have found that some are not learnable. There I feel better! I have always factory ordered my new cars, but that may not be possible next year. I'm mad as heck. Maybe I'll swap an automatic for a 7 speed!
Wait until electric cars add a “nostalgia mode” with fake clutch and/or shifter lever that interrupts the power transmission just so it feels like the car shifted a gear as it gives you the kick in the butt, just for shits and giggles... It will happen lol 😂
@@Kuth70 me. I do. Manuals are simply fun and gives more control. I don't even own one at the moment. Haven't had one for 6yrs. Only had 3 in my 34yrs of life. Doesn't change that it's simply more fun with more control. I think it fits more with sport type cars and trucks. People really arent buying them cause most people are too lazy and feel like it's too complicated. And...texting.

But on my commute to work every day I started to view driving my old modified WRX as a chore. Personal preference of course. Mashing the pedal in a Tesla is quite the experience. Gives me the giggles every time. That said, I've made all three of my kids learn on a stick. Make them appreciate driving more :)
But in Germany they teach people to drive stick in driving schools. I don't know what it's like in the US, but driving schools in Germany really aim for teaching the driver how to be really careful and responsible, while also focusing on how good the driver can drive the car. Yes, the teachers and examiners do actually put emphasis on a clean driving style.

Here in Argentina (no, I'm not Argentinian, don't you dare, life just... takes weird turns) they are. Way cheaper and more available than autos. @@TadeuCarabias we have lots of automatic options in Argentina recently, they are certainly booming (although companies charge more for them and most are outdated 4 speed autos in the cheaper brands like Ford or Volkswagen, only fancy 8 speeds in BMW). Also another important reason people learn manual here is because the driving exam to get your license in most places require you to do it in a manual car. What i find surprising is reading most Europeans also drive manuals, i thought manuals were just a 3rd world thing but it seems it's isolated to the US ^^
My driving car was manual. Was because a teenager bumped to my left totalling the car. So I have been driving auto this last week. Just now I drew a hybrid for 4 hours. My initial excitement about the fresh car with lots of gizmos quickly turned into a 3hour boring "drive". It doesn't feel like driving at all. Now that I think of why I miss my manual, one of the best things in manual is you drop it in into the neutral and cruise until losing your momentum., Depending on circumstances you can either drop it at four, or five or rev it up a little and catch your favorite third, or maybe at second and blast around the corner. You can push and start it, and when needed you can just lock up the door and leave the car in neutral, so that folks can push it around to make space for their cars. And the sound! The sound is always amazing even if you have the cheapest stock mufflers. Did I talk about the adrrnaline rush when accelerating? Yeah! My next car will surely be a manual.

When I was married my husband talked me into getting an automatic transmission car. After our divorce the first thing I did was buy a manual transmission Subaru.

Sadly those types of transmissions are race spec and price is insane.
@@MarkoLomovic I wouldn't consider any kind of mechanism or assistance. The speed of the shifts is completely irrelevant and such a system will never come close to the raw feeling of a manual gearbox.
@@indridcold8433 Well, to be fair, in major citites. across the U.S., traffic blows king kong balls. In Los Angeles a 10 mile drive can take an 1 to 1 1/2 hours on any given morning or afternoon. In a manual, that freaking sucks. In West L.A. you can easily spend 30 minutes to go 1 mile!

I mean, even really old grannys have no problem driving manuals lol .
It may be better in terms of fuel economy and safety, but: 1) Its maintenance is expensive and it's not uncommon that a repair of just the hydrokinetic clutch costs more than buying an entire new car. It's also complicated, hard to repair on your own and has a lot of moving gears that are prone to damage. 2) Clutch allows you to ,,charge" the engine (which is a nice option if your battery died) and have full control over the torque, power output and all the other aspects. In automatic it's the gear setting that tells you how fast you can go on a specific torque, in manual you can decide for yourself. It can be quite important while e.g. overpassing. 3) My grandfather, a retired driving instructor, often gives me an entire lecture on how awful the automatic transmittion is - especially for parking in winter and going uphill. I think there is something to that - even though it's programmed or engineered in other way to be more efficient than human in this matter, a driver has no control over how it will all set in these situations. 4) On automatic it's not really easy (even even possible) to drift. 5) I could use the car with manual transmission to help some of my closest ones with their driving exam. Technically in Poland you can pass an exam on automatic gearbox, but then you'd only be allowed to drive cars in this class with only this transmittion, while manual gives you permittion to drive any car vehicle in a specific class you desire.

Driving is about more than just manual transmissions. A lot of 60s supercars came standard with manual steering and brakes. The Roadrunner even had manual windows. Performance buyers were opposed to anything that added weight, sapped power, or detracted from "real" driving. Now they want all the power and electronic gadgets, just give em a manual shifter. It's kinda weird.

I love both manual and automatic. I have a automatic with lots of options for long and annoying travel on the highway, and the manual for smaller travel, weekends and because it is a 170 horse powers small and fast car, so kind of cool to drive in small roads the weekend. And you can rev.
@@neuideas I've been there... some cars have a very wide (unnecessarily wide) brake pedal, so when I go in an automatic car I always test my reflex of hitting the clutch to see if I might hit the brake pedal with the left foot.
I just got my first stick shift car about a month ago. Twice now after dropping it off at storage and getting in my daily auto I have found myself half hitting the brake with my left foot as I put it into drive.
I just like the versatility of a manual, you can creep in idle, you can rev match in various ways, you can downshift exactly when you want to, you don't have to wait for the reaction time of the engine computer to figure out what you're trying to do just from input from the gas pedal, you can coast, you don't have to hit the breaks when you're maneuvering forward and backward 🤷 you just have more control over the vehicle
@@gerardflynn7382 Engine braking is nice, but not recommended at all when driving around other people because the brake lights don't come on when you do it. Well maybe some modern manuals have sensors that make the brake lights come on, but all the manuals I've seen don't do that.

one of my friend back in high school had a Mitsubishi Spyder the same color and everything as the one in the R&D movies, we all came to see it then when we realized it was a automatic we all laughed. months later he wanted to sell it and only got 3500$ for it. we laughed even more as the normal price in those days were 8000$ for a manual one in standard color, we even found out later he paid 1500$ for the paint job.

Manual transmissions are nice, but there's a reason automatics caught on. They're just way more convenient and comfortable for the majority of people. I currently have two cars, a 2006 Mazda 5 and a 1980 Datsun 280ZX as a project car. Both have automatic transmissions (4 speed in the Mazda and 3 in the Datsun). I daily drive the Mazda and really like how smoothly its automatic transmission shifts. I can barely feel the shift from 1st to 2nd, I can only hear the shift from 2nd to 3rd, and the final shift into 4th is completely unnoticeable unless I'm looking at what gear I'm in. It also accelerates pretty fast for a compact minivan (honestly it's closer to a hatchback than a minivan). The Datsun's 40 year old automatic though frankly sucks. The shifts are jerky, it accelerates slowly, and it can easily stall on inclines at low speed (honestly before I bought that car I didn't think automatics could stall). That's partly why I'm swapping a 5 speed manual into it, the other reasons being that manuals are just more fun to drive and I want the two extra gears. I know these two cars are 20 years apart, from different manufacturers, and of different types, but I think they still paint a fairly decent picture of why automatics caught on so quickly after being around for such a long time. Older automatics simply didn't offer many advantages compared to their manual counterparts of the time, while often taking up more space, weighing more, and coming with less gears. Until the 90's and early 2000's, there was basically no reason to get an automatic over a manual. Nowadays though, automatics offer a much smoother ride, have improved vastly in both size and weight, and have an equal amount of or more gears than manuals. We're also seeing more and more cars with semi-automatic/semi-manual options on their automatic transmissions, allowing drivers to choose specific gears without worrying about the clutch, giving drivers the best of both worlds. It wasn't laziness that killed manual transmissions, it was convenience, comfort, and advancing technology.

When I lost my 2016 Acura RSX-S, in 2016, I thought it would be the end of my days with manuals. When looking for a new car, I was set on getting a 2017 Honda Accord Sedan. Then, I found out that I could get the coupe in a V6 manual. I waited 3 months for that car which I ordered. Had to drive around in POS car. It was worth the wait. It's been two years since I purchased that car and I couldn't be happier. Hopefully, I will be able to keep this car for another 8 years. I think the chances of a getting the next car with manual is almost an impossibility. I've only owned one automatic. Keep it. The manual keeps me awake and I'VE NEVER HAD TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. I AM DEEPLY SADDENED. Here all the list of cars I've owned: Chevrolet Beretta: 4-speed automatic... shit. Had transmission problems. 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T, 5-speed manual... thought it was good until I drove a Honda. 2006 Acura RSX-S, 6-speed manaul... car that made me a believer in Honda and really enjoyed shifting at astronomical 8100 r.p.m.'s in the glorious K20. 2016 Honda Accord V-6 Coupe, 6-speed manual... shifting in a buttery smooth manual was not only a joy but finally enjoying torque was wondrous.

I said something like that for real once. Then I realized I had actually criticisized a newer, better technology BECAUSE it was newer and better and praised the old tech for its virtue of being less convenient and more of a hassle. And I prefer the obsolete tech over the undeniably superior new tech for no reason other than it's what the cool kids 'back in my day' used and I stubbornly believe what went on in the car culture when I was growing up is the absolute only right way to do it. Old manual cars are mechanically simpler, and can be serviced and overhauled in third world countries with little difficulty. Newer technologies are still immature and complicated and thus less reliable with frequent sensor problems, and over-reliance on computers and complex technologies will have an adverse impact in supply and repair. With current events, people should notice these issues in time.
It is almost like right to repair is getting itself put out with the extreme complexity of favored products. If you wanted the right, you should use it frequently instead of getting lazy and unknowingly handing the right to someone else, because that would be too late. It is almost like the like of Chavez did not succeed because of this very reason.
The cost is lower, unless you live in Hong Kong. This is a big deal because most of the world is not enthusiastic about dumping extra expense into something, and most actually cannot afford the extra cost.
IMO the manual car is a great liberator of the people behind scooters, and the very reason that they were is their unique trait of economy and simplicity that is something difficult to replace. Even more so when against EVs in their current form, because just the lithium had to travel around the world multiple times, and only Japan among a few others can make Li batteries properly.
I believe there are more arguments in the realm of sensibility and practicality, but these are the ones I can think of now.

Manuals, like news papers, magazines, and am/fm radios are the kind of thing that will continually drop in popularity yet never entirely disappear because there will always be a small group of people who still prefer them
I bought a turbo diesel 4x4 with the stock radio cassette player still built in it from the exact day it was manufactured. I've decided to never replace it with a generic CD radio and it's made me get into cassettes as a hobby. So yeah, there's always gonna be a small niche group that prefers the older, simpler things than the majority.

I’m from England but my dad worked at GM HQ in Detroit back in the 90’s for 3 years. A few of his friends that he made out there came over to England and were staring at my Dad in amazement because he could drive a manual. But a lot of high end cars over here now are automatic like Mercedes etc.

I switched to a manual 4 years ago and have found myself speeding less, paying attention more, and having more fun driving to work, even if traffic does suck sometimes

The speeding thing is super true. Automatics are tuned for best fuel economy, all the time, which means they would keep shifting up the gears as you go downhill. In a stick you can just use one gear and the engine will manage its own speed.
I just allow about a 15-20 ft gap from the car in front of me and just slightly gas it in and let it roll. So traffic isn't too terrible to me.

Recently at 22yo I bought my 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 without ever driving a manual before. I knew logically what to do, but never had done it before. First couple months were rough, but now 6 months in I will never go back to an automatic for a personal car. Freaking love it!

Samesies. I bought my first manual vehicle in my early 20's and learned by myself to drive it. It was definitely rough for months.
There's a lot of nuance to manual transmissions and without anyone driving with you who understands the mistakes your making it takes quite a while to sort them out.
Did the same thing w my e46, my brothers friend gave me a couple lessons before i drove down to Virginia from Chicago to buy it. Best way to learn is behind the wheel, and stalling out three times in a four way intersection will definitely make you learn fast. Two years later and it’s still one of the best decisions I’ve ever made

Most driving instructors drive manual transmission cars, so pretty much everyone here is taught to drive manual. Automatic is slowly becoming more common here though - my next car will probably be an automatic - but it is still considered somewhat of a luxury. It's probably due to the high tax we have on cars. We pay a premium of 85-150% in taxes for a new car, so for instance a $25.000 car in the US, would cost around $55.000 here.

I love my manual car. I am still learning to drive but I prefer the sense of command on the gear shifts over just convenience. Well manuals can get annoying in hellish levels of traffic, especially in India, but still, I feel like I'm actually doing some serious stuff.
Automatic cars feel like video games. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them but I just love the feeling of a manual.
The sad thing is that manuals used to be cheaper to buy, but as they are becoming more rare in the US, the autos are often cheaper now.

Yeah, in Greece where people drive old cars, that's true, now come up to the Netherlands where I work, or any other central European country and you'll quickly see that a huge percentage of people drive automatics. It's come to the point that you cant buy a good car with a manual anymore, even BMW only offers its 190HP diesel with a manual, if you want a stronger engine, you have to go for an automatic. Which sucks cause now I made enough money to buy a new BMW and I'll be forced to buy a used one instead, in order to get what I want...

I live in Malaysia, and we have hour long traffic jams just to commute to work, and back. And if it rains, those jams can easily take 2 hours or more. An automatic gear is a godsend in traffic jams. However, I also have a 4 wheel drive to go jungle bashing as a hobby, i.e., driving deep into the tropical jungle to camp and explore. Trust me, the simpler the 4 wheel drive with a strong manual gear is a must and a literal life-saver. And I used to have a small peppy manual gear car, which I would drive on long windy country roads. The joy and trill of barrelling down the road, hitting the perfect clutch change, and playing with the gears to extract the maximum power out of a small engine always brings a smile to my face!

I drove a 65 Mustang for years because it was such a fun car. Not only did it have a six cylinder engine and 3 speed manual, but it had manual steering, brakes, roll up windows and manual door locks.

Was definitely a little weird to get used to at first when my dad was teaching me but I got it down after having to drive it almost 3000 miles across the country where I'm living now. About a month after I got here, I lost the Taco to an electrical fault that caused a cabin fire. I am now driving an 01' Eclipse GT with a five speed manual as well, and if I can, I want every car I get after to have a manual transmission if possible. They are so much fun to drive, and couldn't agree more when you're saying that it's harder to be distracted by other things while driving, making it safer. And also when saying that the experience in a manual is just amazing, with the feeling of truly being connected with your vehicle and to the road you're driving on.

We’re a culture that waits for an elevator to go to the second floor opposed to take the stairs. We pay to have someone park our car opposed to walk a couple hundred feet. I am a European and ive had both manual and automatic... A manual is fun to drive when you are in the mountains for example, or just in the winding roads of the countryside... But just commuting daily... I miss my automatic, its just so relaxing not to do anything except braking and giving gas.
But like you said, electric or hybrid is all automatic... So eventually it will disappear from existing. Except maybe on the track.

I once had a 1972 Chevy Impala with automatic transmission. Well, I pulled that transmission and put a 4 speed manual in it. I LOVED it.

If you can't start your engine, in manual transmission engine, just put it on the first gear with stepping on the clutch to make it to neutral mode and push the car to let the wheels revolve, you quickly release the clutch and the engine will start. In automatic gear you just have to wait for the mechanic or leave it on the side way.
Bump starting works better in 2nd and if it's a 4x4 automatic then they can't be towed at all, have to get that bitch on a trailer
Or you can use a hand crank to start it. Of course there will be some problems in modern cars when you would try to do that though.

Most of my cars over the last 55 years have been manuals. I currently have a '16 Cadillac ATS Premium (top trim) with a six-spd manual. It's quite rare. I found three with this trim on AutoTrader four years ago in the whole country. One was in Houston, and one was on Long Island. I flew to Memphis from Detroit to get the one I have and drove it 700 miles back home. What a great car! My wife thinks I'm crazy. I'm a mechanical engineer (specialized in internal combustion engines), and I'm a big BEV advocate. This may be the last manual shift I have since, as mentioned in the video, EVs have torque curves that make transmissions unnecessary. That's okay. It's been a wonderful ride.

With the progress techs are making on self driving cars nowadays give or take another 20 years we'll probably be watching a video like this one saying about how people are complaining about the lack of cars that don't drive themselves. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if soon electric cars became the norm here in America. What does make me happy though is that I know manuals aren't ever going to go completely out of fashion, I'm not heavily into the tune market myself, but any car that has been through my auto shop and has had aftermarket work done on it has been a manual.
@@reokado4783 I think what will happen will be the urban centers will be dominated by electric cars. There is nothing better in congested urban centers than electric cars. The suburban areas will have a mixture of diesel, petrol, and electric. The rural areas will be dominated by true 4x4 that run on diesel, natural gas, or petrol, because they will need the extra range, and rural electrical grids are not very reliable at times. As for hybrids, their days are coming to a close soon. As batteries improve there will be no need for them in the urban centers, suburbs, and they are currently worthless in the rural areas half the year anyway.

If your clutch is super-heavy I guess it could get tiring though I've yet to find one all that bad in any car or truck, otherwise what is it that you find hard? If you're used to it you don't even notice you are shifting, it just happens, your hands and feet know what to do.

I'm an old arthritic 72 year old geezer who has never owned an automatic car. I despise them. I am a veteran long haul driver and will not drive a truck with autoshift for the same reason. They dumb down the industry. Now you got me started! I have UA-cam videos on the joys of manual transmissions. North Americans are not interested. It takes practice and skill to drive them well, and most are just too lazy to learn, and I have found that some are not learnable. There I feel better! I have always factory ordered my new cars, but that may not be possible next year. I'm mad as heck. Maybe I'll swap an automatic for a 7 speed!

But in Germany they teach people to drive stick in driving schools. I don't know what it's like in the US, but driving schools in Germany really aim for teaching the driver how to be really careful and responsible, while also focusing on how good the driver can drive the car. Yes, the teachers and examiners do actually put emphasis on a clean driving style.
I'm in Canada and when I got my license 23 years ago the driving schools charged more for the manual lol. Now they probably don't even offer it.

@@TadeuCarabias we have lots of automatic options in Argentina recently, they are certainly booming (although companies charge more for them and most are outdated 4 speed autos in the cheaper brands like Ford or Volkswagen, only fancy 8 speeds in BMW). Also another important reason people learn manual here is because the driving exam to get your license in most places require you to do it in a manual car.
What i find surprising is reading most Europeans also drive manuals, i thought manuals were just a 3rd world thing but it seems it's isolated to the US ^^
My driving car was manual. Was because a teenager bumped to my left totalling the car. So I have been driving auto this last week. Just now I drew a hybrid for 4 hours. My initial excitement about the fresh car with lots of gizmos quickly turned into a 3hour boring "drive". It doesn't feel like driving at all. Now that I think of why I miss my manual, one of the best things in manual is you drop it in into the neutral and cruise until losing your momentum., Depending on circumstances you can either drop it at four, or five or rev it up a little and catch your favorite third, or maybe at second and blast around the corner. You can push and start it, and when needed you can just lock up the door and leave the car in neutral, so that folks can push it around to make space for their cars. And the sound! The sound is always amazing even if you have the cheapest stock mufflers. Did I talk about the adrrnaline rush when accelerating? Yeah! My next car will surely be a manual.

Sadly those types of transmissions are race spec and price is insane.

It may be better in terms of fuel economy and safety, but:
1) Its maintenance is expensive and it's not uncommon that a repair of just the hydrokinetic clutch costs more than buying an entire new car. It's also complicated, hard to repair on your own and has a lot of moving gears that are prone to damage.
2) Clutch allows you to ,,charge" the engine (which is a nice option if your battery died) and have full control over the torque, power output and all the other aspects. In automatic it's the gear setting that tells you how fast you can go on a specific torque, in manual you can decide for yourself. It can be quite important while e.g. overpassing.
3) My grandfather, a retired driving instructor, often gives me an entire lecture on how awful the automatic transmittion is - especially for parking in winter and going uphill. I think there is something to that - even though it's programmed or engineered in other way to be more efficient than human in this matter, a driver has no control over how it will all set in these situations.
4) On automatic it's not really easy (even even possible) to drift.
5) I could use the car with manual transmission to help some of my closest ones with their driving exam. Technically in Poland you can pass an exam on automatic gearbox, but then you'd only be allowed to drive cars in this class with only this transmittion, while manual gives you permittion to drive any car vehicle in a specific class you desire.
I will never willingly drive an automatic.

Driving is about more than just manual transmissions. A lot of 60s supercars came standard with manual steering and brakes. The Roadrunner even had manual windows. Performance buyers were opposed to anything that added weight, sapped power, or detracted from "real" driving.
Now they want all the power and electronic gadgets, just give em a manual shifter. It's kinda weird.

I just got my first stick shift car about a month ago. Twice now after dropping it off at storage and getting in my daily auto I have found myself half hitting the brake with my left foot as I put it into drive.
Mate, i do that as well. Problem is the car has a footbrake.... Hoo boy
Ye I smash the brake and attempt to find the gear on the shifter thing.
I sent my stick shift car to car wash and they push my car to their parking spot because they dont know how to drive.

I just like the versatility of a manual, you can creep in idle, you can rev match in various ways, you can downshift exactly when you want to, you don't have to wait for the reaction time of the engine computer to figure out what you're trying to do just from input from the gas pedal, you can coast, you don't have to hit the breaks when you're maneuvering forward and backward 🤷 you just have more control over the vehicle

Engine braking is nice, but not recommended at all when driving around other people because the brake lights don't come on when you do it. Well maybe some modern manuals have sensors that make the brake lights come on, but all the manuals I've seen don't do that.
@@CaliPepperas a motorcyclists that's a big issue, but any good biker knows to gently step on the bike break when engine breaking to activate the lights. Not enough to actually do anything though just enough so people know you're slowing down

one of my friend back in high school had a Mitsubishi Spyder the same color and everything as the one in the R&D movies, we all came to see it then when we realized it was a automatic we all laughed. months later he wanted to sell it and only got 3500$ for it. we laughed even more as the normal price in those days were 8000$ for a manual one in standard color, we even found out later he paid 1500$ for the paint job.
@@Francois_Dupont What nation are you from that your currency symbol comes after the amount? I live in the UK. Our £ comes before the amount (£1,00). I have lived in Canada and Untied States of America and they also put their currency symbol before the amount. I know Mexico does the same thing. The Euro is also presented in that manner. (€1, 00) I have not been to Australia. Perhaps they do it that way. Where nation do you reside?

Damn strait! I've had that same conversation. The inventory said they had 4 sticks in stock, but when I went to the lot ALL of them were gone. Dealers want to sell CVT because they make more $$$$$$$. Why give you a spare tire, when people will pay every month for roadside assistance.

Manual transmissions are nice, but there's a reason automatics caught on. They're just way more convenient and comfortable for the majority of people. I currently have two cars, a 2006 Mazda 5 and a 1980 Datsun 280ZX as a project car. Both have automatic transmissions (4 speed in the Mazda and 3 in the Datsun). I daily drive the Mazda and really like how smoothly its automatic transmission shifts. I can barely feel the shift from 1st to 2nd, I can only hear the shift from 2nd to 3rd, and the final shift into 4th is completely unnoticeable unless I'm looking at what gear I'm in. It also accelerates pretty fast for a compact minivan (honestly it's closer to a hatchback than a minivan). The Datsun's 40 year old automatic though frankly sucks. The shifts are jerky, it accelerates slowly, and it can easily stall on inclines at low speed (honestly before I bought that car I didn't think automatics could stall). That's partly why I'm swapping a 5 speed manual into it, the other reasons being that manuals are just more fun to drive and I want the two extra gears.
I know these two cars are 20 years apart, from different manufacturers, and of different types, but I think they still paint a fairly decent picture of why automatics caught on so quickly after being around for such a long time. Older automatics simply didn't offer many advantages compared to their manual counterparts of the time, while often taking up more space, weighing more, and coming with less gears. Until the 90's and early 2000's, there was basically no reason to get an automatic over a manual. Nowadays though, automatics offer a much smoother ride, have improved vastly in both size and weight, and have an equal amount of or more gears than manuals. We're also seeing more and more cars with semi-automatic/semi-manual options on their automatic transmissions, allowing drivers to choose specific gears without worrying about the clutch, giving drivers the best of both worlds.
It wasn't laziness that killed manual transmissions, it was convenience, comfort, and advancing technology.

@@JockcoZ Well, the Evo was an expensive mostly outdated car in the end. Dreadful interior, average engine, and the entire rest of the car from 2008 with a sticker price well into the 40 k euros range depending on spec here in Germany. No wonder nobody bought it.

I learned to drive in my dad's A4 (auto), then I learned how to use a shifter with our Mazda MX-5 (or Miata) Mk 1... it's so more fun to drive a manual!

When I lost my 2016 Acura RSX-S, in 2016, I thought it would be the end of my days with manuals. When looking for a new car, I was set on getting a 2017 Honda Accord Sedan. Then, I found out that I could get the coupe in a V6 manual. I waited 3 months for that car which I ordered. Had to drive around in POS car. It was worth the wait. It's been two years since I purchased that car and I couldn't be happier. Hopefully, I will be able to keep this car for another 8 years. I think the chances of a getting the next car with manual is almost an impossibility. I've only owned one automatic. Keep it. The manual keeps me awake and I'VE NEVER HAD TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS.
I AM DEEPLY SADDENED.

Chevrolet Beretta: 4-speed automatic... shit. Had transmission problems.
1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T, 5-speed manual... thought it was good until I drove a Honda.
2006 Acura RSX-S, 6-speed manaul... car that made me a believer in Honda and really enjoyed shifting at astronomical 8100 r.p.m.'s in the glorious K20.
2016 Honda Accord V-6 Coupe, 6-speed manual... shifting in a buttery smooth manual was not only a joy but finally enjoying torque was wondrous.
