    Listen to the intricate way Derek and Warren go through the many changes in this Beautifully crafted tribute to Duane Allman And Dickey Betts!! Such a true work of Magic!!! This music will never grow Old!!!

    I love it! Great job. I'm 57 and saw the orig. many times and was stunned to learn that death could touch me and mine at a young age. I've seen Warren many times and Derek a couple and they are Masters. But you got to understand, people my age lived the music and the times back then and nothing can be "better" than the orig. to us, it was our life and time back then. It doesn't mean we can't absolutely love this also. Glen

    Kind've a nice way of dealing with the elephant in the room- i.e the fact that the two previous great guitarists that the band is really known for, Duane and Richard, are not there. Having Derek and Warren together in the ABB is really a treat that really makes them almost as important as the original guitarists in the band...that's the way I see it anyway...

    • @JC-11111
      @JC-11111 3 роки тому +4

      Elephant in the room? Nah. They got past that 25+ years ago when Derek and Warren joined. That performance was from 2009. The elephant had long been gone home by then. It was a great tribute to 2 incredible guitarists. IMO, the best tandem leads to ever play together. Other than that, I disagree. There was no "elephant in the room" by that time. Not in any way whatsoever. They were, are, and always will be Allman Brothers. That alone, to me, means there was never an elephant to begin with. They're Brothers. They were the moment they joined the band. And in that respect, they are equals with Duane & Dickey. And accepted as part of the band and as being equals. So there couldn't be an elephant in the room.

    Holy crap this is freaking amazing! Duane set the bar for slide guitar and blues in general, and every ABB guitarist since has been amazing! Never forgetting Dickey of course...but Warren and Derek are unbelievable, I hope I can see them live some day.

      i saw them live in Weedsport ny outside concert it was my 16th birthday present, back in the mid 90's. i loved it, we ( mom and i) were standing on a bridge in the middle of the crowd ( like small walk bridge), and we were waving at all the band members' when Dickey bets waved at us smiled and made eye contact. we were jumping up and down and just so happy and were screaming because "Dickey waved at us!". i will never forget this. this is an amazing version of blue sky and little Martha two of my fav. songs i looked up on here to find this today!!! absolutely love these guys, as 1 of my all time favorite bands!!!

    Can't leave this thread without putting in a good word for some other members of the Allman's story, Les Dudek - whose slide playing on "Ramblin' Man" will live forever, and also "Dangerous" Dan Toler, another killer player from Duane's solo days in the 1980s.
    In all the discussion about the old versus new line-up, forgot to give props to Berry Oakley - man, do I miss that guy's playing!

    I like to think of the Allman Brothers Band as a continuum of great players throughout the years and generations. Duane, Dickey, Butch, Greg, Derek, Warren...it just keeps going on down the line in this great river we call life. Even Vaylor Trucks, Butch's son on the cover of Brother and Sisters, is an amazing guitar virtuoso who has a band called Bonobos Conversion. The Allman Brothers, to me, are a mystical family of ever lasting tremendous players. God bless them and remember, eat a peach...

    Have the Instant Live on this. Listen to it all the time. This was a HUGE step in the current line-up embracing their past with Dickey! I'm glad someone not only got this on video, but did a good job in capturing this moment! Well done! I captured Dickey joining the TTB last September and I feel pretty good about that.

    I'm 50 and had Eat a Peach when it came out. I didn't get to see what was left of the band until 1980. I enjoyed the early 90's version and have learned to love the current version, but I still enjoy Dickey's songs and playing the most; I got to interview him in 2003 and he was very friendly and expressive about his music and the ABB.

    @GeorgiaBoy1961 I had an opportunity to speak with Dickey on his tour bus in 1986 in North Carolina and he put up with me asking all kinds of questions about the ABB. Yes that is Dickey playing all lead and slide parts. Les Dudek plays second lead guitar and he and Dickey plays the same licks together (harmony or twin gutiar) here and there such as the little lead up to the middle solo in the song. Dickey said that is Gregg Allman singing back up &Berry Oakely on bass.. his last in the studio.

    @MOSKII58 You must mean the 90's. Warren didn't join the ABB until 1989. Also he was in Dickey's solo band in 1988. The ABB didn't play much in the 80's. They toured in 1980 and 1981 but only played a few gigs in 1982 and 1986 all with Dan Toler and Dickey Betts on guitar. Then in 1989 they toured with Warren in support of Dearms boxset.

    This is great stuff! I would want to see and hear this line up if I bought an Allman Brothers ticket. I would be sorry that previous members were no longer around but thats just too bad. Its the same with Little Feat, two founding members down but they are still the Feat and they deliver!!

    @tonymenown As best as I come pin down on this from interviews with Butch and what fans seeing Dickey at his shows at the time of this Beacon run is this. Dickey only received an invitation through his personal manager who received it from the Allman Brothers manager. No one IN the band ever contacted Dickey. Dickey told one fan just days before this concert he would come if Gregg called him. I don't know. I guess Gregg didn't call.

    @SharkaZz Duane usually played with a pick except when he played slide. I saw a bunch of shows back then. On Eat A Peach, Duane plays the first solo, then he and Dickey play the little bridge together, then Dickey plays. Also that is the way they did it live the one time I heard the original band play Blue Sky. Duane played first and Dickey second. And Duane didn't use a slide.

  • @waverunna1200
    @waverunna1200 14 років тому

    Yeah the major tone difference between Duane and Dickey is which pickup they used more in solos. Duane used the neck pickup (more smooth sound) on the les paul and dickey generally used the bridge pickup (more treble sound)

    @GeorgiaBoy1961 Dickey does ALL the solos on Ramblin' Man with Les Dudek playing the additional electric guitar. On Jessica Les Dudek plays acoustic guitar and really stands out on the track. Back then some thought they were going to invite Les Dudek to join the band but they decided to add a piano player (Chuck L.) to fill the void out of respect to Duane. Also they played as a five man band for a year. I saw that version of the band in Jan 1972 live and Dickey was the only lead guitar player.

  • @JimDorman
    @JimDorman 14 років тому

    This is brilliant - it pains me that Dickey was not here and part of this, but I feel that, at least Warren and Derek (and probably Oteil) were partially paying tribute to Dickey and this beautiful song (Blue Sky) while paying tribute to Duane.

    @GeorgiaBoy1961 I was suprised by Dickey when I ask him who is singing back up on Revival from Idlewild South. Dickey said "I know it doesn't sound like it, but that is everybody in the band". I said "You mean even Butch Trucks and Jaimoe?" and he said "yes it is all six of us". Well that would be Gregg, Duane, Dickey, Berry, Butch and Jaimoe singin "people can you feel it, love is everywhere".

  • @boblackey1
    @boblackey1 14 років тому

    @gmfwilly I'm over 60 like Gregg, Dickey, Butch and Jaimoe and I was nuts about the original band. We went to hear them as often as possible and when Duane got killed, it was such a shock to this amazing trip all the fans and the band were on. I think anyone who saw the original ABB, Gregg, Duane, Dickey, Berry, Butch and Jaimoe..would agree the ABB today ain't even close to the energy and magic we experienced. With Warren and Derek playng the guitar parts, it don't sound like the ABB we knew.

    @boblackey1: Was Dudek playing slide on "Ramblin' Man" or was Dickey? Whoever did the job did it right...
    Betts got overshadowed by Duane and then Gregg Allman for so long, that folks forget what a great performer, player, and writer he is.

  • @boblackey1
    @boblackey1 14 років тому

    @DuaneAllmanisGod Sorry but you are wrong. The first Blue Sky solo on Eat A Peach is by Duane Allman and it was his last recording without a slide. The second solo is Dickey. Betts has always played second on Blue Sky. When Duane died he switched from first solo to second guitar solo on Liz Reed. Fillmore Liz Reed is Dickey first, Duane second just like Idlewild South.

    Saw them do Blue Sky once with Duane and Duane took the first solo. Both Duane and Dickey played very long solos and both solos got very intense. The solos were so long and not being familure with the song then, when Dickey started singing the second verse, I had forgotten it had vocals. Also for some reason at that show, Berry Oakley did almost all the talking to the audience between songs. Gregg and Duane were quiet. Maybe they were too high:-)

    @MOSKII58 OK. But don't worry, it IS correct. Us old ABB fans figured out who did what way back in the early 70's. And after hearing Fillmore, Idlewild South & Eat a Peach thousands of times, by 1980 we could just tell by the style. Duane and Dickey actually sound very different from each other after you get use to them. Saw them do B.Sky live too and Duane took first solo and Dickey second just like the record.

    Butch recently ( just a couple of weeks ago) apologized to those who were offended that his picture of the Allman Brothers Band on his personal Facebook page had Dickey cropped out. (the original band). He said the guy he hired to do the page thought he would want it that way because of his personal feelings toward Dickey. Butch said that he has restored the picture with Dickey in it & that he acknowledges Dickey's contribution to the band & his unique relationship to Duane. Butch dislikes DB!!

    @tonymenown All I can say is Duane Betts and even Dickey said they never got invited by anyone in the band. Only a fax from the ABB manager. According to what fans said at a show Dickey did just a day or so before the Beacon run, Dickey said he would come if he got a call from Gregg. I can only guess Dickey either decided "f... it" and didn't come or Gregg never called. But who here can deny that Dickey was as big a part of that band as Gregg and a bigger part than Warren or Derek ever will be?

  • @bobbynoe1

    @bob lackey (last comment 7 years ago)[and @all the Duane/Dickey-nostalgics]
    Always rating, always comparing, always knowing better than all the other ABB fans... (Have you been a teacher ?;-) - Ok, some years have passed, and maybe you changed your mind or even changed to another form of existence (which I don't wish) - but still your comments feel pretty ... dominant. You may have spoken with Dickey and Butch, and surely you know a lot about the band's history, but concerning this ABB line-up it's only your personal opinion, your subjective rating, your transfiguration of the glorious past. Don't try to put yourself on first rank in ABB fandom, let us all enjoy the music.
    For me (as an ABB addicted since the early seventies) this band was not only a band but kind of project, kind of family, in which old members sadly passed away and new members were welcome in their very personal way (no "Jessica" without Chuck Leavells inspired piano playing).
    Last remark: Listen to "Desdemona" on ABB's 2003 CD "Hittin' the Note", listen to ABB's live performances "First Set" (1992) and "Second Set" (1995 - well, with Dickey and Woody) or to "Rockin' Horse" on Live-CD "One Way Out" ( (2004 with Warren and Derek) - and tell me that it is not as intense, as energetic as ... it gets.

    To me this is like Warren and Derek doing the Air Force version of the Missing Man Formation. Little Martha is always the last song of the show and Blue Sky with no vocals. Who's better, Who's best. Who fucking cares! With music like that. However, I will say that I was at the Walnut Creek Amphitheater, Raleigh NC show on July 4, 1993 and say Derek play Layla. The kid is fucking unbelievable.

    The word was Dickey was messing up and forgetting his lines.After they threw him out, Greg was messing up big time in the concerts. He was forgetting to come in on queue or coming in too early. Notice in this video where Derek is? He is in the middle. Now in concerts he is next to Greg and when it is time for Greg to come in, Derek will turn and walk toward Greg to queue him. Watch next time you go see them. Butch would not fire him and Greg isn't going to fire himself!
