I've been contemplating a cheap, manual convertible for a while now and struggling to evaluate options other than the Miata. This video series is perfect
I've owned a 1984 Toyota Celica Convertilble, 1991 Chevy Camaro RS Convertilble and I currently own a 1995 B-package spec Mazda Miata. I can say that the Miata trumps them single handedly. If it were me not owning the Miata I'd have gone with a Pontiac Solstice or Saturn Sky, although the funky top would of made me instantly hate it when it's not in use. Otherwise yes, Miata for sure! If I had $8,000 right now laying around for a convertible, I'd choose a cleaner NA than I have now, NB or NC.
@@dragonbrownies517 there's absolutely nothing wrong with that top...once you're in the owner it becomes at non issue the only people that have a problem with it are people who've never had one
I own a 2000 SE Miata and a 2015 Sienna exactly the same colours as those in the race, so this hit me right at home. And yes, my wife will smoke me in a straight line if I'm in the Miata and she's in the minivan.
Yeah. To think you're feeling like a badass in your convertible manual... And then any old minivan or SUV blows you away. Proves its all about the feeling.
It didn't get its due. I bought one years ago and the values have doubled in the UK. It's time is coming. I maintain that a MK3 is a MK1 with lighter steering.
This was great to see the MR2 getting some love with a first place from Todd. If you can get one cheaper than every other car tested, it's worth it. That car was designed to be fun at low speeds and cheap to maintain, which is why the engine is uninspired. It's cheap inside because the car was supposed to be attainable to the majority of people by keeping costs down. The looks are bland (if got uglier with age) so they weren't devisive and appeal to more people. Toyota should be admired for bringing a top tier driving experience to everyone. I know Mazda has an equally great car, but it isn't mid engine. For me the winner was the Boxster. If you go by Todd and Paul, I think it's their winner too. It came on both their top 3s and placed higher than the Z4 on each. My take away from this is that the Z4 is better than I always thought it was. I wonder if the Z4 had the steering of the Boxster, if they would have placed it higher than Boxster. One thing to think about, both Todd and Paul picked a car for their first place that is closest to the one they own (though who wouldn't). Elise has a Toyota engine and Lotus had a hand in the setup of the MR2, so it's a weird cheap Elise. The Boxster is a mid engine Porsche, like a Cayman.
I disagree with the looks, mine has a spoiler and skirts and looks like nothing else on the road. I get compliments by everyone, the first day I bought it I made friends as soon as I stopped for gas. The boxter is in noway comparable because it costs more and it's way heavier. A small turbo on the MR2 will destroy any boxter and will still be cheaper.
For me personally, BMW Z4 3.0i was more joy to drive than Boxster 2nd generation (note it's Boxster 1st gen in this video), way better than Mazda MX-5. Cause it has the power, the engine is fantastic. I think even much faster than Boxster (if not expensive S). So for me, the winner is BMW Z4 3.0i. I owned it in 2017. I drove Z4 2.5i..was -50% of the fun. Too slow. The suspension of Z4 is fantastic too in my opinion..and the feeling that you sit on the rear wheels..wow, you have to feel it so you can appreciate it. ❤ Dunno why I don't share the enthusiasm about Boxster. Need to find the 1st generation and drive. And 3rd too. I think I really love the driving feeling of old BMW's.
Yeah but if you do such extensive mods you may just say same about other cars. Also i would recommend getting lotus exige i thing engine as it's same engine but tuned by Yamaha and it eats stock 2zz. You also don't need suspension mod for MR2 just get new stock suspension it's one of the best you can get.
couldn't agree more. the amount of youtube vids i've seen of people with huge grins driving a modded mr2 mk3 is inspiring me to do the same 😁 i've got bc racing coilovers coming soon to sure up the suspension and i'm currently debating whether to turbo charge the 1zz, swap for a 2zz or even a k20 swap. 🤩 any preferences???
One thing I love about my Boxster is the frunk plus the trunk. My wife and I did a 10 day road trip to the roads of Western NC and had no problem fitting all our stuff.
@@hendersonli6594 Z feels good but heavy, FoST is good but FWD & Evo will always make you feel you need to race😂 Miata gives me the zen when you drive plus its better on gas out of all these 3 cars lol
@@melvinmeligrito4103 lmao😂 agree on the zen part I feel I’m in my own bubble when I’m in the NA haha. I feel with a turbo the NA is the perfect drivers car
Watching the video makes me realize that those two drivers are really surprised and pleased by putting MR2 and Miata in both top 3. I will summarize it by saying that they are pleased to say "japanese roadster/mini sport cars are really good handling and driving, giving really good driving experience). I will not take the point that "Z3 is better than the Miata because it is german car" (could be interpreted by that stern drivable common car that does not give any special impression is "better" than a Miata...). Having driven pretty multiple cars, I totally agree with you, Miata all generations are really enjoyable cars that give smile (while I would like to complete my driver's experience by testing a MR2 2nd generation)
Did you own Z4 with 3.0i? Wasn't your Miata too slow? I also have this basic cheap car feeling when I was driving Miata. Just didn't feel as good as BMW Z4 - to open the door, to sit inside, to put the roof down, start (V6 sound), dynamics.
Watching these videos is like hanging out with a couple of your favorite car buddies. The fact that we're hanging out in a beautiful location on a beautiful day, driving and talking about spunky little sporty cars...just doesn't get any better! Fantastic job guys and kudos to the film crew and especially Todd's direction and editing.
Follow up piece to watch with my daughter tonight and a new podcast in the morning, everything I love. Thanks guys for all your hard work! Gorgeous scenery 🏎🏔🏁
I actually think all these cars are cool and I would love to have a clean MR2. If you are buying a cheap used sports car for fun, you really need to consider the cost to own it. My choice here would be the Miata. They have proven to be extremely reliable and they have by far the most aftermarket support and parts availability. Ownership of a Miata becomes somewhat of a passion and it's hard to say that about most cars.
Because of this car review, I have picked myself a Toyota MRS SPYDER today. It is a fun and playful car. Trust me, go with the one with 6 speed manual tranny. You would nor regret at all. To me, it is always good when the soft top is down. Super reliable car. Just mod the exhaust and you would love the loud sound.
Never I would expect a part 2. The MR2 6 speed MT to me looks the best choice. Engine placement, easy to live with, basically a more usable Elise, when swapped with a 2ZZ.
@@hudsonensz2858 Yes but it's too old, emissions class in Italy, too few parts here, basically a project car that maybe go outside only on sunny weekends.
My cousin has an MR2 Spyder and he swapped a 2ZZ into it. That thing is crazy fun to drive. You honestly could buy an MR2 Spyder and 2ZZ swap it for less than the Boxster, most likely.
It would be interesting to know if a properly maintained MR2 would have figured higher in Paul's ranking. That car is an embarrassment to the owner, they should hang their head in shame. The rough engine, the old cheap tyres, the grubby seat covers, the whole car in fact! Find a good one that has been looked after (as they are more likely to be a weekend car with lower mileage) with Yokohama Advan Fleva V701's (as they are one of the few tyres available for the front and rear which are different diameter and widths at each end) and you won't be looking at any of the other candidates.
A few years ago, I started looking for a convertible to drive. Almost every article, blog and magazine I reviewed kept coming back to the Porsche Boxsters. Balanced, driver centric, comfortable, roomiest and reliable. I found a clean 2006 Boxster S, 6 speed manual. I have not been disappointed at all. Long weekend drives and all the backroads.
@@ulyssehahang5181 take your time, do your research and really look the car over. Check records and receipts for service done. Inspections a great idea. After that enjoy the driving experience. They are beautiful machines.
Hi - thank you for doing this comparison! This is the process I went through when I was selecting my 3rd sports car. I’ve had an ‘74 MG and a ‘90 Honda Prelude 4WS. This time, I bought a JDM 2004 Boxster. Def the best driver’s car I’ve owned. I love your tips on weighting the front end to take tight corners at speed. Truly, an amazing vehicle. I love that Porsche prioritizes enduring support for these older vehicles. I paid $14,000 CDN, replaced the IMS and clutch, and completely detailed the paint and interior. The car looks new. Truly, my baby. Stay safe!!
Great video. I've owned two of these, so I'd like to share my thoughts. My last car was a 2006 MR2 Mk3. Mine was the facelift model with 6 speed manual box. Pros: good value (here in the UK!), small size is ideal for British back roads, good steering, feels quick enough despite the limited power. Cons: engine lacks charisma - gives its best between 4 and 5K. LSD makes it feel like it's trying to swap ends on you if you're getting a move on. Only car in my life I've ever spun(!) and that was on a dry road on good tyres. MR2s are ideal for anyone who wants a small, fun to drive sports car without pushing the envelope. But, honestly, I found it a scary car to try to drive quickly. My current car is a (later 987) Boxster 2.7 manual. Pros: astonishingly neutral handling for a car with the engine in the wrong place (runs and hides!), THE MOST subjective handling fun of any car I've ever driven (better even than my Clio 182), wonderful engine charisma, storage space (has two large boots/trunks; the MR2 had half a trunk and some awkward cupboards). Cons: feels heavier to drive than the MR2, and as a result is a little less chuckable at very low speeds around 10-25 mph, expensive to buy well without inheriting a mountain of deferred maintenance jobs to do, you need to be mindful of where you park it. What are they like to live with? Both mine have been daily drivers, and the first thing you notice when just commuting, is that the Boxster's ride is very hard. The MR2 is quite a lot more forgiving in this regard. My Porsche even has the smallest 17" wheels and standard suspension, and it's still hard. The Porsche has a lot less wind noise and noise from surrounding traffic with the hood up. I bought a detachable hardtop for my MR2 and this made it a lot quieter. The Porsche is obviously stiffer. I'm quite an enthusiastic driver and, when pressing on, the discernible flex from the MR2 blunted my enjoyment of the car. But, the main difference? There is just something SOOO special about the Boxster's chassis. It is an absolute hero of a car on a fast twisty road. Which of these two do I think your viewers should choose? If you're the sort of person who couldn't tell the difference between good handling and great handling and won't be driving enthusiastically enough to find out anyway, then choose the MR2. They are worthy, although a little expensive in the USA IMO (I just sold my 2006 43K FSH MR2 with heated red leather and a hardtop for £4500). But, if you want exquisite handling and are willing throw a lot of money at an old used car to get it, then get the Boxster. Or ..... why not do what I did and get both, one after the other. Experience is the spice of life.
Thanks guys. This is a great series sponsored buy Auto Tempest a tool I always use! The Saturn Sky Redline can be attained for under $8k in the northern states and should have been included in this series! The 2.0L is better than the standard engine and the Skyline is better looking than the Solstice!
@@easyrider3066 @EasyRider It was clear from the beginning they were more interested in picking the best German cars they could for their show but not the best versions of the 6 comparison cars. Except for the MX5/Miata they told us up front where their preference/bias stood!
If your doing a series on cheap sports cars, the repair costs need to be considered. How many thousands is it going to take to fix that Mercedes convertible top? How many thousands to fix the valve seals on the BMW which is a engine out job that charges 40 hours of shop time. The Solstice/Sky are basic GM products with a engine that has plenty of aftermarket support.
I owned only two cheap fun roadsters. A Z3 and a 986. They have completely different characteristics, however me and the boys loved them both to bits. I bought them when my first son finished secondary school and we kept it for more than 10 years as daily rides. I maintained them on my own with very little help from service centers. Our Z3 achieved 400 000 km's and eventually as the kids left house the previous owner (a lawyer) bought it back. Still have the immaculate Boxster. Hardly a day's issues and glorious fun to own. Whilst I was a member of the Porsche Club, we tracked them often. At top speed, the Z3 is a hand full with typical scuttle shake due to short wheel base and I never replaced rubber bushings. The Boxster, with some 225000 km's is still just mind blowing. Handling still superb and steady as an arrow. As I'm now retired and the kids are gone, I can't see ever selling the Boxster, although I miss still shed a tear longing for my fire engine red Z3. Love from Africa.
Hi there. How was the feeling? I owned one 2.0 until it was totalled in accident (not my fault) and it was a great car. Had NB before that, and this was a hell of a cat. Now own NC with 1.8 engine, and it feels a bit lacklustre vs. 2.0 version.
I love all these car review channels and am subscribed to many, but this 'Cheap Sports Car Showdown' series is so much more enthralling than a certain, AutoTempest sponsored series where the hosts tend to repeat the same sentimental sentiments over and over (being fortunate to drive special cars and fun times with good friends). This series aside, the channel, in general, is extremely fun. Keep it up gents.
I got to stop the video and chime in at number 13! This is way better than videos on exotic cars that I will never drive let alone own, and that quite frankly I'm just not that interested in. But you're bringing in cars that I've owned, or could buy in the near future. Your impressions are reliable, useful, and trustworthy. I can see that they are a lot of work but I for one enjoy this series immensely. Thanks guys!
I just bought a 2004 986.2. It has full saddle leather interior and a 5sp manual. The colour is Carmona red metallic. It is my 7th car, yes I have a problem to normal people, but car nuts understand. I'm completely blown away by the quality of the car. The sound and handling are great. I paid significantly more than the prices paid here, but 2 years after this review, prices for Boxsters are going up. Loved this review.
I love how you specifically point out how great the z4's engine is as I had the same experience recently. I bought my first straight 6 BMW (e90) after having owned a 4 pot e46 and I couldn't believe how much better the 6 cyl was. The smoothness. And the howl when you're up in the revs.... I had the realisation that if you're gonna buy a beemer, it must have a str 6 engine. Got my first track day with it coming up too so looking forward to seeing what's what.... Another great video chaps. Thanks.
I own a 2001 Boxster S, 140,000 miles on it. Still runs and drives great. The only car I own that I wouldn’t sell before the Boxster i8s my 1987 BMW 325ic.
With a luggage rack, I've just been camping for a week in my MR2 Mk3, or the Roadster as we call it in the UK. Behind the seats is enough space for 2 mid-sized duffle bags which is plenty for two people on vacation. On the luggage rack was a tent, blow up mattress and two camping chairs. In the frunk ( or froot, UK again ;-) ) were our walking boots, camp light and other emergency items. It's really not as impractical as people claim. Also, with the 2ZZ in mine, it's a blast around those country lanes and once it's above 6000rpm it's fast enough to get you in trouble.
@@EverydayDriver I enjoyed the video very much but what was that pathetic launch by the Mr2 in the drag race ? still, it was catching the Mx5 even with the bad start.
I've enjoyed my mr2 since stock 1zz to 2zz track toy. Really handles well and running costs are low. 15in tires and been on the same brake pads for 2 track seasons
"It does feel cheap. I admit that. But that's part of the charm." Such a Porsche fanboy. He wouldn't say that about any other brand. Admitting you have a problem is the first step. :D
Agree. I have to cop to loving Porsche too, but you gotta let the cars earn praise on their merits, not the expectations based on reputation (where hype lurks and often plays an illegitimate role). I prefer Todd’s take usually (even if I conclude differently), because he seems more impervious to pre-conceived notions.
@@stms4411 It earns its merits by being half a 911, including the engine, not interior plastics. It is literally a 996 911 from the front bumper to the front door hinge, even the doors, engine etc...this is not a low end car with a Porsche badge.
I have the MR2 spyder and its awesome. I don't think that spyder they were testing sounded very healthy. But yeah def won't get beat by a mini van and with decent set of tires it's amazing.
Didn't expect the MR2 to make it, that was really cool. I've had a Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 and am now back on Mk1... love them all, but the Mk2 is a very different car to the others, feels much bigger and heavier, even though in fact it's really tiny, and it also feels a lot less responsive even though it's faster. Mk1 wins for me though... the weird looks, the cockpit interior, the way it came about as a fun commuter car, everything!
I've driven all 3. I like the sw20 modded with bushings, performance wheel/tires, suspension (coils/sways) and power mods, to be the best. I owned one. Hard to pass up that 3sgte. I've driven a mk1.5 with mods that was really nice on track. They start to feel very similar with that setup. The difference was you can fit much wider tires on the sw20. Felt a less edgy and more confident.
As someone who’s daily driver is a 2002 boxster S I was giggling basically during your review of it. 986 boxsters are like 300% car compared to the money you pay for them. It’s a true Porsche. A flat six literally howling behind your ears to a solid 7200 rpm redline? Yup that’s a drug to me. Haters hate while I enjoy the best car I’ve ever owned. I will admit like they said, maintenance is an issue. It hasn’t been unreliable by any means, but basic upkeep and preventative maintenance can be expensive.
I cross shopped a bunch of these and then started looking at simple replacement parts. Lol I now have a 2002 nb2 ls miata with the perf pack. It was always the way to go.
This series and the explanations are what excites anyone looking for a fun driving car. I cannot thank you guys enough for the honest reviews, comparisons, and insight you provide. Keep challenging norms and pushing what you think people want to watch…it’s on point.
I'm a lifelong BMW fan and am currently debating between the Boxster, Z4 and SLK. I expected the Z4 to be the safe all around pick and the Boxster to be the exciting one. But honestly, after seeing the SLK in person (black on black) and driving it, I'm loving it. The best looking car of the bunch, a good exhaust note, and a surprisingly roomy interior. You guys are right, it definitely cant match the sportiness of the Boxster or Z4, but it's a blast to drive in it's own right. The SLK might be my choice
When You guys tested the Z (Nissan) for under $10 grand . I ended up buying one after seeing your review . 370 - paid more BUT what a awesome car . Then purchased a z 2.5 (Bmw) a few weeks ago . Once again paid a tad more than 8k. BUT another just solid car fun car . Great reviews guys .
I've had both a 2001 miata and a 2001 mr2. They handle pretty similar but I like the mr2 more because the engine is behind the seats and feels a lot more unique. The mr2 may not be the prettiest car but can look good with some cosmetic mods.
Love my ‘03 2.7 Boxster! NA flat six, mid-engine, manual, RWD roadster with just power to have fun, but not get in trouble - what’s not like? Oh, and the sound!
Look up Marrad seats. You will be able to fit in a NB miata with them. I daily with mine and I can go on weekend drives for a few hours and nothing hurts.
You guys do a fantastic service for auto enthusiasts. Love your channel! Always look forward to the new content. This challenge so up my alley. Can't wait for the next challenge.
I loved this! Just discovered your series. As a single mom who has been driving a minivan for 20 years, I am sooo ready to get a fun car to drive. Nothing beat driving a cool car with a manual in the mountains.
Six + years ago I was looking for a roadster. I started by reading the SLK forums. There were enough horror stories that I moved to the Z4 forums. There were enough horror stories I moved to the Miata forums. I now own a 2012 Miata SE. If you are going to do a cheap car challenge long term costs become important. If all you can afford is a $8K car a big repair bill is killer.
Miata and Z3 have very robust parts availability. I have a 99 NB, 2003 Mini Cooper S and 2000 Z3 Coupe (clownshoe). Very affordable to own unless you like using the dealer for anything. I'd buy all of them again in a heartbeat.
I hope you are still reading comments on this video. I had been looking for a used Boxster- after 2 not passing their PPI - I was DONE! I watched this video Thursday night in bed. By Friday afternoon I had put a deposit on a 2003 Z4! 2 1/2 Weeks later I’ve put almost 2k miles on it! Thank You!
Reliability and the cost of maintenance....ease of maintenance must be considered.. If someone is shopping for a sub-$8k the cost of parts, service, and reliability should be considered.
I bought my MR2 Spyder because there’s a certain indescribable uniqueness to it. I’ve formed a bond with it and wouldn’t give it up for any car under $40,000.
I totally related to that! Love my little cars and their handling, but I have to accept that a Honda Odyssey will beat me off the line. My son believes that a minivan should be our next projects! Just gotta improve the handling. hahahaha
@@chadmyers1100 I’ve thought about getting an AWD V6 Toyota Sienna, putting the supercharger from an Evora on it, wrapping it in British Racing Green with bronze wheels, and replacing all the badges with Lotus ones. Todd would be proud. 😬
I bought an MR2 Spyder 3 1/2 years ago. I looked at everything before I settled on the MR2 and I made the right choice. I absolutely love it. It IS a toy, no everyday utility at all. But it is pure driving joy. More smiles per mile than anything else on the road, and that's what it's all about.🙂
I daily drive my Spyder and did 10k miles in it this summer over 3 months lol it's definitely been a great everyday vehicle for me and hasn't failed to put a smile on my face every time I go for a drive
I am a proud owner of a 2001 mr2 spyder for 5 years i would recomend avoiding the "sequential trans" and either gut the cats or get headers. do not buy one with over 100k miles if it still has the stock cats
@@jdwbcr I had the pre-cat issue on my 2000 MR-S way back in the early 2000s. I had 3 engines replaced under warranty until Toyota finally has a band-aid fix for the 1zz-fe . Their fix was not perfect. Toyota just redesigned the piston oil control rings with more tension. Unfortunately, Toyota never designed the 1zz-fe to handle the high G load the car goes through when it is either tracked, heavy cornering or put into a power slide. Oil can slosh past the stock oil baffles in the oil pan easily causing oil to flow past its loosely designed piston oil control rings . Thus, that loose oil would clog up the 1st stage /pre-cat catylitic converters. The clogged up precats would than break up into tiny particles & get sucked back into the engine causing engine failer. Any owner of any year MR-S should remove the precats AND install a Morosso aftermarket oil pan with taller oil baffles. The 1zz-fe may have been more reliable for a Corrola. However, it was a total disaster of an engine in the MR2 Spyder. Toyota should have sold the car with the 2ZZ-GE from the Celica GTS instead.
I have a 99 MR2 with about 120k km. It burns oil but no problems other than that. Just check your oil and add when necessary. It's not that big of a deal. Pre cats are supposedly notorious for breaking apart and getting sucked up into the engine, but I think it has more to do with the driver and maintenance. It's not as bad as people make it out to be if you take care of your car. PS: I don't track the car, so my spider doesn't experience abnormal useage, only the occasional spirited touge
100 kwt/ton = 134 hp/2205 lbs, which makes the MR2 spot on for the goal of "supercar power to weight ratio" (real/metric ton is 1000 kg=2205 lbs, not 2000 lbs, which is the American ton = 907 kg). But if it was 134 hp/2000 lbs that would be even better. Toyota would have surpassed their goal :)
had a mx5 2.0l 2011 plate really good drive but was rusty as hell underneath swapped it for a mr2 roadster 2002 model with a stainless exhaust drove even better no rust and the sports exhaust sounded just brilliant just change the crap standard exhaust and your good ! got 2007 boxster now dont think its much more fun than the mr2 roadster to be honest !!!!!!
I has a NB Miata for many years. Yes, I got comments from ignorant non-car people, but the car was a great fun street car. Absolutely loved the go kart handling and being able to rev up the engine in every gear and not shatter the speed limits. I also have a Porsche 911 and Corvettes so the Miata stacks up with them as a true sports car 100%.
So much to take in when thinking about a replacement for my NA Miata. My heart says, "Get a Z4 or a Boxster." But my head says, "Get an NB Miata." Any one of them will be fun to drive, but my experience with NA Miatas (I'm currently on my second) says an NB will be much easier to live with just because there aren't as many expensive components that I have to worry about.
All good answers but the nc is so overlooked and its a real daily quiet cabin real glass in the soft top.. you can even plop in so many rx-8 parts even a 2.5 liter for cheap! (Personally i drive a z4m)
@@Miat2213 As a longtime member of the Miata community (my current NA is my second), I'm not anxious to leave it. That said, I've spent over twenty years driving one Miata or another and I'd kinda like something different.
The Z4 in this video does not appear to have the "sport" button, or the M-Sport suspension. Get a 1st-gen Z4 with the M-Sport suspension, which I believe includes the sport button (Haven't see one without the other). The M-Sport also comes with 18-in. wheels vs. 17. The sport button changes the throttle mapping to be more aggressive, and gives a little more weight, and therefore feel, to the steering. Ditch the run-flats for proper tires (I really like the Continental Maximum Contact), and the Z4 becomes a much more direct and definitely non-squishy car when coupled with the M-Sport enhancements. And it's a lot more fun, especially on tight twisty roads...
I have a black Mr2 Spyder lowered on coilovers and out of all the cars I've had it's the one that gets the most attention. People are always complimenting it, asking what it is, taking pictures of it. That is why I've always found it strange that a lot of folks say it's ugly. Maybe it being black hides some lines and makes it look more exotic along with it's redi interior? I'm glad there's been a recent outpour of love towards the chassis cause it's simply brilliant and if 22 years have passed and it's still being regarded as the best handling car toyota's ever made, then this one is certainly a keeper
15:48 "I'm not saying it's not expensive...but if you're gonna have an addiction, it might as well be wearing a Porsche badge, right? ;) Thanks for the inspiring video, gentlemen.
Todd nailed it! I was in the market for a newer version of my previous Fiat X1/9. MR2 was my option, but of course, the turbo one because I had never driven a Spyder. The first one I went to test drive was in good condition and sits in my driveway. It sucks in the highway but for my commute around town i'll take a pass on my suv and and my boi racer 2jz y0! It's the car I find myself driving literally every day.
Great video. To be fair on the Mercedes manual thing, they've had good manuals for years in Europe, it's just that they didn't want to bring them to North America. The SLK kind of escaped that rule, but it was the last of its kind to do so.
Considering that the people being targeted are possibly cash strapped petrolheads, I do think you should have put more emphasis on maintenance costs and parts availability. In that case, I'm afraid, the answer is still...Miata. Your video is an absolutely epic piece of work, though. Can't wait for the Grand Finale!
I bought an MR2 roadster for my daughter 4 years ago for £800!!! let alone $8000. Yes it is a 2001 model and had 118k miles but the only things that didn't work were the power aerial (swapped for fixed stubby) and the aircon (still need to fix). She decided she did not want to drive it after all (public transport is great in suburban West London). But I have taken it on as I can't bear to see it sold as it is such enormous fun - now of course my wife thinks I planned it this way all along, actually not true but hey... My point is I now own my dream pair of cars and would not want anything else A 21 year old 3.0l manual BMW e46 Touring (wagon in US) for practicality and transporting my drums. It is that so so sweet straight six and hydraulic steering you were talking about and still has 50:50 weight distribution. A 22 year old MR2 Mk 3 roadster for weekend fun IMHO the best estate car ever made and the best available cheap convertible sports car for fun. Both at the peak of DIY maintenance suitability before too much electronics started to take over. Both at 7 seconds or less to 60mph with responsive normal aspiration - actually almost the same power to weight ratios When retired I will properly restore them to as near showroom as possible but I will never sell them. Thanks for some real world car review content. ;-)
Nice Going guy's! How many people do you thing are going to jump at your contest with that Ugly, slow MB SLK being one of the prize cars!! Way to go Paul. Any of those other cars would have been a leap compared to that Benz!
I love that MRS so much and if I could get one (never came out here) I would 2ZZ-swap in a heartbeat. I also owned a 2008 Z4 3.0si and man do I ever miss that car. Fast enough, manual transmission... everything smooth as silk. Hydraulic steering is a journo meme.
+1. NB/NC followed by Boxster (P-car tax is still crazy) for me. In the end, mostly comes down to which one you'll feel the most comfortable wrenching on (or at least troubleshooting issues as they arise), followed by parts and prices of said parts. Down the list would be aftermarket support (upgrades vs sticking with oem)...driving is also important and looks/image
I’ve really enjoyed your series on these budget sports cars, as someone with a second car I’ve been in this position twice now. I had a NA 1993 Miata w130k miles that i enjoyed for ~2 years. I loved the aftermarket support and found many tasteful accessories that looked stock to improve the interior. It drove wonderfully around the corners, but felt a bit unsatisfactory at highway speeds. I ended up selling it for a 2002 Audi TT Quattro Roadster w/75k miles at the start of this year. I looked at local Z4’s and found the good ones to be well over the 8k mark, and while the Boxster’s that I found were in good condition and fabulously priced, the front headlights are just too melted egg for me. From what I’ve seen, the SLK is desirable in the manual and quite rare. Automatics are very common and fairly priced. I ended up going with the TT, mostly by finding a great deal, but the looks have always been appealing to me, growing up in the era they came out, and with a fantastic interior for the era. I know they don’t fit the RWD criteria for this test, but if you were to open your criteria a bit I’d recommend testing one!
I daily drove a 2003 base Boxster for 13 years. One of the most reliable cars I've ever had. Sold it a few years ago for $6500. After watching this, I wish I hadn't!!
BMW E34s with the M20 engines is my home, silky smooth straight-six, old technology that is simple to understand and fix, 1400kg and makes a lot of beautiful noises while just by following traffic. Fun on backroads, comfortable during daily usage.
Just watched this again.Brilliant overview. Thank you. I owned an '02 MR2-S for four years. Todd picked his #1 well. But then - so did Paul. I beg to differ with Paul only on driving the MR2-S at slower to medium speeds at 7/10 or less. Yes, that is fun. But back in the day I wrung it out and it gripped and tracked beautifully at higher speeds. Never one accident in four years. No it is not a Boxster. Or an Elise, which it is spiritually closer to. But seeung as you only give up storage and that gorgeous Boxster flat six in exchange for a reliable, economical car that puts a Miata to shame for handling, and feels less cramped as well...yeah it is the overall pick here. I miss my MR2-S. And my '67 MGB. Darn good thing I get to daily an '18 Type R or I would be insufferable. I rolled down the windows today as AZ currently has perfect 65 to 70 degree weather. It helped. (Supra owners, don't try this at home.) We can't always drive roadsters. Pity. But we can all drive manual cars that provide fun as well as function. Enter the hot hatch and sport sedan. Thank you two for shining a light on cars that otherwise might be overlooked.
Really enjoyed watching these, it’s great to see some real world content for ordinary car guys. I have an e85 Z4 myself and just converted it to a hydraulic PS system from an m3, if that doesn’t fix it I’ll chip it in for a Boxster
The drag race at the end had me laughing. Slow cars are where the fun is at! I look for light weight and the Lord’s transmission in a car. Great series!
i loved watching this. I have been driving economical cars for a while because i was a poor college student. now that i am out of college i rewarded myself with a sporty car with around a $10,000 budget (plus or minus a few grand). i considered many cars, BRZ, RX8, Z350, miata, boxster, and a few others. and you guys helped me over the years with teaching me on what i should look for in my obtainable dream car. you guys are the reason why i was able to come up with that list in the first place. i ended up getting the Boxster S and i love that car. but after i watch this season, i am starting to thing that i should have gotten the MR2 (which is a car that i didn't even consider and have forgot that it even existed) instead because that car is so close to the car that caused me to fall in love with driving in the first place when i was 18.
@@gsk5161 Less torque at low RPM is a fair point, but compared to the cars that did get that engine (the Matrix, of all things!), I think the MR2 would be the least disadvantaged.
I've been contemplating a cheap, manual convertible for a while now and struggling to evaluate options other than the Miata. This video series is perfect
Someone will say it, might as well be me, Miata is always the answer. I have a 94 NA R-package as a daily and autocrosser, could not be happier.
I’ve got a 2003 Z4, 3-liter with a 6pd manual. Have owned it for 11 years and it still brings a smile to my face every time I get in it.
You will not regret it. Get an NA.
The drag race vs. a mini van was the most humorous thing I’ve seen on your channel in a while. Thanks for doing that.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
Hey, those Siennas are fast, I used to own one.
I own a 2000 SE Miata and a 2015 Sienna exactly the same colours as those in the race, so this hit me right at home. And yes, my wife will smoke me in a straight line if I'm in the Miata and she's in the minivan.
@@Skagamaster Yeah I have a 2013 Sienna and that v6 is surprisingly peppy for such a large vehicle.
Yeah. To think you're feeling like a badass in your convertible manual... And then any old minivan or SUV blows you away. Proves its all about the feeling.
This is definitely at the top of my list for favorite pieces that you’ve done. Great job!
Glad you enjoyed it that much - thank you!
How did you both comment before the video was even posted?
We release all our videos early to our Patrons. Some of them comment before the video goes public.
That Mr2 spyder is making me want a mini series exploring all 3 generations of the MR2. That first gen never really got its just due.
It didn't get its due. I bought one years ago and the values have doubled in the UK. It's time is coming. I maintain that a MK3 is a MK1 with lighter steering.
I agree, I'd like to see a review of all three MR2.
All 3,please MKI is like a go cart. SW20 is poor man's Ferrari, Spyder=disappointing
When I realized I'd need to repurpose an old school lunchbox for luggage it was a hard no.
I think the issue with the 1st gen was it was a go cart for streets. Which to some was good but with the gen 2 it was a true sports car
Problem with the mr2 spyder is that the engine has some issues and was designed by Toyota.
I totally agree the boxster wins hands down!
I had a MR2 Spyder for over a decade and loved it. Super fun and reliable as heck.
Tell you what, Mr2 with upgraded suspension, brakes, tires and the 180hp 2zz engine and you have a world beater.
Yeah too right I have a 2zz Celica motor in my MR2 Spyder, sold a 987 boxster S and bought if for half the price. It's quicker and way more fun.
@@wykydytron All 2zz engines have a Yamaha head even if they were in a Toyota. Anyway you can definitely improve the suspension as well.
couldn't agree more. the amount of youtube vids i've seen of people with huge grins driving a modded mr2 mk3 is inspiring me to do the same 😁 i've got bc racing coilovers coming soon to sure up the suspension and i'm currently debating whether to turbo charge the 1zz, swap for a 2zz or even a k20 swap. 🤩 any preferences???
@@nobetternickname depends on your budget. In order of preference K swap turbo, 2zz turbo, 2zz, 1zz turbo, stock.
One thing I love about my Boxster is the frunk plus the trunk. My wife and I did a 10 day road trip to the roads of Western NC and had no problem fitting all our stuff.
Owning a Z, NA Miata, FoST and an Evo, miata is on the top of my list in terms of driving experience
Wow that’s high praise. I own an NA as well and have only owned a BRZ before, and prefer my NA 😂
I can't get over how great this series is. I have been wanting a "fun" car for a while, this did it.
The 3rd gen mr2s are really under rated cars. Ive had mine for over a year now and I can say it makes daily driving fun.
Had mine for 6 yrs. My DD. Did have to replace motor at 200000 miles. I went with another, much newer 1ZZ.
Very glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching!
MR2Spyder will surprise many, once driven.
Follow up piece to watch with my daughter tonight and a new podcast in the morning, everything I love. Thanks guys for all your hard work! Gorgeous scenery 🏎🏔🏁
Thank you both for enjoying what we do!
Bought a 2002 MR2 Spyder less than a year ago. Beyond obvious faults of storage space, the handling is fantastic and I love every moment in it.
MR2 Spyder every time, mid engine and low weight heaps more fun than a boring Miata
Never I would expect a part 2. The MR2 6 speed MT to me looks the best choice. Engine placement, easy to live with, basically a more usable Elise, when swapped with a 2ZZ.
Get the second gen! Looks much better
Easy to live with? It doesn't have a boot/trunk? MIATA every day.
It would be interesting to know if a properly maintained MR2 would have figured higher in Paul's ranking.
That car is an embarrassment to the owner, they should hang their head in shame. The rough engine, the old cheap tyres, the grubby seat covers, the whole car in fact!
Find a good one that has been looked after (as they are more likely to be a weekend car with lower mileage) with Yokohama Advan Fleva V701's (as they are one of the few tyres available for the front and rear which are different diameter and widths at each end) and you won't be looking at any of the other candidates.
mr2 modified with honda engine that is placed in a better position would win for sure.
Do you have any tips / mistakes to avoid when looking for a Boxster ? :)
@@ulyssehahang5181 take your time, do your research and really look the car over. Check records and receipts for service done. Inspections a great idea. After that enjoy the driving experience. They are beautiful machines.
I was waiting for them to actually say if the MR2 was a better driving car. Glad he did eventually.
Experience is the spice of life.
great writing my friend, greez from germany!
Thanks guys. This is a great series sponsored buy Auto Tempest a tool I always use! The Saturn Sky Redline can be attained for under $8k in the northern states and should have been included in this series! The 2.0L is better than the standard engine and the Skyline is better looking than the Solstice!
I was wondering about that as well, I often thought they were the same underneath but the Skyline always looked better to me.
Interesting they didn't talk about the 260hp Soltice GXP which GM offered a factory tune that bumped it up to 290hp.
Loving the drive by shots, and the aerial shots!
I went for an NC Miata, and I adore it.
Hi there. How was the feeling? I owned one 2.0 until it was totalled in accident (not my fault) and it was a great car. Had NB before that, and this was a hell of a cat. Now own NC with 1.8 engine, and it feels a bit lacklustre vs. 2.0 version.
The SLK feels bigger and more stable because it got a honkin' 355hp V8 in it! They had to be able to handle that power. Great series guys!
But what's the point with that not so good auto transmission only ? 😔
@@petert7807 SLK has the 7 speed, it isn't terrible except for the paddle shifters. Don't bother with them.
The SLK has a V6 and it is 230 hp.

@@EverydayDriver You nailed it with these videos. And I'm not just saying that because I have an MR-S :)
Thank you very much for recognizing and connecting with what we do among the sea of UA-cam content.
Agreed. I watched every minute of this. I couldn't care less about expensive hypercars and the like.
This is one of the best automotive video series of all time. You guys continue to just kill it with your content.

Love my MR2, bought it 4 years ago with 58K original. Can't beat that!
Thanks.
@Pdpiper Where do you live? I didn't realize the e46 was available with a 4 cylinder.

This. Is. Awesome. Thanks for watching!
@@EverydayDriver I enjoyed the video very much but what was that pathetic launch by the Mr2 in the drag race ? still, it was catching the Mx5 even with the bad start.
@@LupinYonderboy Agreed- they are zippy off the line. Storage: we fling away the spare wheel to create a semi-decent frunk.

@@Baerchenization you missed my point. I was criticizing Paul not the 911
I have the MR2 spyder and its awesome.
How much did you pick that up for

The mr2 may not be the prettiest car but can look good with some cosmetic mods.
spoken like a true addict Paul! When you're on that high, the blood, sweat, and tears fade into the background.
Love my ‘03 2.7 Boxster! NA flat six, mid-engine, manual, RWD roadster with just power to have fun, but not get in trouble - what’s not like? Oh, and the sound!
IMO, this is the most fun car to drive @ 4/10ths...stunning, really.
I'm considering to buy that! How about the petrol consumption? You know these times...
@@danielepinna7494 generally, around 25mpg in typical street driving. I have gotten as high as 30mpg on a long freeway (A road) trip.
Very glad you enjoyed it. We had a great time making this series (and a wrap up video coming). Thanks for watching.
I loved this! Just discovered your series. As a single mom who has been driving a minivan for 20 years, I am sooo ready to get a fun car to drive. Nothing beat driving a cool car with a manual in the mountains.
We couldn’t encourage you more! We hope this was helpful and greatly appreciate you watching!
i have the MR2, very underrated, handles sharp, loves to rev and you can go flat out everywhere
Thank You!
We are thrilled to hear this. Congratulations! Thanks for watching!
That minivan race at the end was awesome!
Well done. The MR2 is the tossable Boxster that doesn't break.
I am a proud owner of a 2001 mr2 spyder for 5 years i would recomend avoiding the "sequential trans" and either gut the cats or get headers. do not buy one with over 100k miles if it still has the stock cats
what issues arise from leaving the stock cats
Paul had the Miata on his list. 🥺
I agree with Todd that the best one there was the Toyota MR2 Spyder (and this is coming from a Miata owner).
My first car is a 986 boxster S and I love it everyday. it works great for school having two trunks and is a pleasant daily driver.
How much was it?
I'm so glad my MR2 made it this far.
had a mx5 2.0l 2011 plate really good drive but was rusty as hell underneath swapped it for a mr2 roadster 2002 model with a stainless exhaust drove even better no rust and the sports exhaust sounded just brilliant just change the crap standard exhaust and your good ! got 2007 boxster now dont think its much more fun than the mr2 roadster to be honest !!!!!!
My heart says, "Get a Z4 or a Boxster." But my head says, "Get an NB Miata."
Any one of them will be fun to drive, but my experience with NA Miatas (I'm currently on my second) says an NB will be much easier to live with just because there aren't as many expensive components that I have to worry about.
Get the nb for the community
Get an s20 mr2 or 240sx
All good answers but the nc is so overlooked and its a real daily quiet cabin real glass in the soft top.. you can even plop in so many rx-8 parts even a 2.5 liter for cheap! (Personally i drive a z4m)
@@Miat2213 As a longtime member of the Miata community (my current NA is my second), I'm not anxious to leave it. That said, I've spent over twenty years driving one Miata or another and I'd kinda like something different.
@@lilyusi Both good suggestions, but MR2's are fetching crazy money these days. So are 240SX's, thanks to the drift tax.
Just picked up a 987.1 Boxster S 6 speed for cheap. Love, love driving it... So much fun. Now I understand.
In 30 years and you saw one of these for sale. The z4 i believe would pull ten times the money of most of the others. The Porsche would be 2nd.😊
My point is I now own my dream pair of cars and would not want anything else
A 21 year old 3.0l manual BMW e46 Touring (wagon in US) for practicality and transporting my drums. It is that so so sweet straight six and hydraulic steering you were talking about and still has 50:50 weight distribution.
A 22 year old MR2 Mk 3 roadster for weekend fun
IMHO the best estate car ever made and the best available cheap convertible sports car for fun. Both at the peak of DIY maintenance suitability before too much electronics started to take over. Both at 7 seconds or less to 60mph with responsive normal aspiration - actually almost the same power to weight ratios
When retired I will properly restore them to as near showroom as possible but I will never sell them. Thanks for some real world car review content. ;-)
This is an amazing series, good stuff fellas
Nice Going guy's! How many people do you thing are going to jump at your contest with that Ugly, slow MB SLK being one of the prize cars!! Way to go Paul. Any of those other cars would have been a leap compared to that Benz!
Need a redo on drag race. Who ever driving the spyder was not paying attention at the start! 😂😂😂
Heh, Todd looses his hat at 8:06
With intention I assume? Haha
...intentionally to make a point...
How can people complain about that Boxster? 2.7L mid-mounted flat 6. Porsche driving dynamics. Nice looks. Interior looks great for its age!
It helped. (Supra owners, don't try this at home.)
We can't always drive roadsters. Pity. But we can all drive manual cars that provide fun as well as function. Enter the hot hatch and sport sedan.
Thank you two for shining a light on cars that otherwise might be overlooked.
Glad you watched and enjoyed this. Thank you!
Really enjoyed watching these, it’s great to see some real world content for ordinary car guys. I have an e85 Z4 myself and just converted it to a hydraulic PS system from an m3, if that doesn’t fix it I’ll chip it in for a Boxster
That mr2 looks bizzare, there are hints of porsche boxster coming thru
The drag race at the end had me laughing. Slow cars are where the fun is at! I look for light weight and the Lord’s transmission in a car. Great series!
Hope you do similar comparisons of used cars under 20, 30, 40.
Among these cars my choose is: Boxster > Z4 > Miata > MR2 > SLK.
i loved watching this.
Glad to have you with us and honored to have been helpful in you getting cars you love. Thanks for watching!
We have 2004 mk3 MR2 and love it. It feels retro now but that’s what makes it appealing.
That MR2 looks like a blast
I'm really sad Toyota didn't put the 2ZZ in the MR2. It seemed like such an obvious upgrade, and looks to be a reasonably popular and easy DIY swap.
I agree, however at lower speeds, normal city driving, the 2zz is not as torkey as the 1zz. You have to really push the 2zz to get benefits, IMO
@@gsk5161 Less torque at low RPM is a fair point, but compared to the cars that did get that engine (the Matrix, of all things!), I think the MR2 would be the least disadvantaged.
Agreed, I just love seeing our cars getting some respect. I actually look forward to going to work because I get to drive the spyder.
In the late eighties I passed on an Intermeccanica 356 Speedster. I've rued that day ever since. Perhaps it's time to look at a Boxster.
8 grand is a lot of money for a lot of enthusiasts. Perfect series, thanks guys
If you’re 16 sure.
