The Lillywhite Sessions is a collection of songs recorded by Dave Matthews Band in 1999 and 2000 and produced by Steve Lillywhite. The songs, recorded by the band as a follow-up to their 1998 album Before These Crowded Streets, were ultimately scrapped by the band's label. Upon being forced by the label to abandon the album-in-progress, Dave Matthews was assigned to work with producer Glen Ballard who, in association with Matthews, wrote the album Everyday in just ten days. This contrasted with the band's prior style of writing, which included significant collaboration between the band members in the studio. The recordings later emerged on the Internet shortly after the release of Everyday, and created controversy among fans as well as the music industry, which was early in its campaign to curb illegal file downloads. The Lillywhite Sessions were never officially released, but most of the songs were later recorded for their 2002 album Busted Stuff.
In April 2006, a self-described recording engineer using the alias of "Karmageddon" mastered the tracks from The Lillywhite Sessions and released them on the Internet. Using the original SHN files released online, Karmageddon burned the songs to a CD-R and ran them through high-end audio mastering equipment, such as a parametric equalizer, audio converters, and a tube compressor. The songs were then balanced to distribute the music evenly through stereo channels, and eventually burned back onto a CD-R. Following the release of the mastered album, "Karmageddon," claimed in an interview that the mastering process he used is "basically the TRUE industry standard as to how a CD gets finalized before mass-production." Once the mastered album was released on the internet, it became the first-ever mastered copy of The Lillywhite Sessions, since the original leaked files were simply raw tracks from the mixing board and were never mastered.

The Lillywhite Sessions will forever be greater than Busted Stuff. It needed to be said, and here it is!
This was possibly one of their top two albums it’s a shame it never got released as is , I was so disappointed seeing these songs being played live in Hartford 6 weeks before the album was to be released and then it never came out … I almost threw everyday out of my car window after I bought it
I was in college when I burned this album off Napster. Soundtrack to my freshman year!
This album being shelved was a turning point for me. After this, they changed up their sound and it never had the same effect on me. Still love all the 90's DMB though
Interesting.
Love all of it .. but u are right with the sound change after this .. Lillywhite and DMB were a great marriage . This album was a proper follow up to these crowded streets .. the drums on this version had more life
@@chrisbridston3438 i feel like the violin parts were perfect, too. And roi had some pretty great improvisations, too
I totally agree. Once they hooked up with Glenn Ballard, they went more for production quality than improvisational exploration. Never the same. Almost as if Lillywhite was their swan song.
Do as you are told by the big shit music execs, that's the way the game is played - much to our chagrin.
I had the bootleg back in the day.... Was on repeat for like 3 years straight!
I remember finding it on Kazaa and bringing it to school the next day. All my friends were begging for a copy.
@@bgorski6937 Pretty sure it was Kazaa that I used to get this back then; before moving on to LimeWire, BearShare, PirateBay, and all the other random ones in the early 00's
I love the ruff versions of these songs. Wish i still had this on the burned cd my gf gave me in college. 😂
Me too
Boyfriend, and yeah. I can’t listen to big eyed fish nor, and especially, Grace is Gone. He messed them up.
@@samorsarasmith7232 I can't even listen to Grace is Gone on Busted Stuff. This version is just so good. I can just listen to it over and over again and never ever get sick of it. Same w/ Captain. As rough as some of these songs are I still love them.
...who said they were the rough versions?...., Eh?
Agreed. Way better album than Everyday…
Not only does this stereo mix sound amazing in headphones, but it's rocking the "official" artwork I've had burned into my brain for 23 years. Outstanding. ✌🏻
I was so pissed when they scrapped this version. The released version is trash compared to this.
Love this album, it’s a shame it was never released
Recently EP, Remember Two things, Under the Table, Crash, Before these crowded streets, Lillywhite sessions!!!!! 🤙🏻 These albums were masterful and still stand the test of time!!!!! Been a fan since 94, best live shows I’ve seen. I still have all the cd’s including this one burned.
How do u like the new album ? Love it .. reminds me of the best of each album.. a lot of crowded streets
This is still the superior album 20 years later. While Dave's lyrics aren't really well defined on Grey Street and Busted Stuff, the musicianship is vastly better across the entire album. Sure, it's not as radio friendly, but it is impossible to deny that the songs are so much better structured. Also, this version of Bartender kicks the crap out of the official release
Agree !.. some songs on here I wish they put out officially .. song 3 or 4 I believe is my fav forgot the name .. it’s not on the “not as good busted stuff “ that album is missing so much.. they didn’t take the time to add in so much extra rhythm from the percussion 🥁 side .. the OG version was more live feel that they went with on TCS
That implies their later works are radio friendly… which I don’t think they are. I mean I never hear new DMB on the radio anymore, like ever.
Damn Dave really nailed that note in Big Eyed Fish
JTR is such a treasure. I would love to hear an official version someday.
Look up 'Rain Down on Me' bonus track on Santana Supernatural Deluxe Edition. Studio version of JTR with alternate lyrics.
Check out “Live at Folsom Field” album 2nd track.
First DMB show was in 2001 at Soldier Field in Chicago and JTR was the opener . Love that song
JTR is officially my favourite on this...everything about it is brilliant...the tempo omg...I absolutely adore Stefans bass, and of course Carter's epic drumming... the whole song is pure gold.
Awhh, I need a little Lillywhite Dave tonight. Thank you for an old favorite.
Yeah, there are some ragged edges, especially lyrically, but this is still their best album. It's so fucking intense and dark and the band was totally on point. I get why he couldn't finish it, but shit.
This version of Bartender is their peak.
What prevented him from finishing it?
As a purist, I’ve resisted listening to this recording. Finally giving it a spin in December 2023. What a gem and wonderful listen behind the scenes.
You and me both as we speak brother
Just listened for the first time too. It’s beautiful!
Honestly, I feel like this is more of a “purist” album because it was what the band intended.
@@ericwilt1776agreed. This is their most pure work ever released
Good thing you'd waited. It would have broken you.
Can't beat it. Best album ever.
It’s so crazy how great Dave’s voice is on these songs!!! Never listened to these songs till now and I can’t imagine my life without them now!!!
I’m here btw from listening to the two part 7 hour Dave Matthews band podcast from Bandsplain. Go listen and live.
I'm sorry that you have missed out for years...guess you have time to catch up
This album is such a treasure! One of the bands best, and such a great moment of creativity for them.
I adore the Lillywhite sessions .. at first I felt betrayed to have this replaced with everyday .. these crowded streets wasn’t an easy album to follow up on.. “classic”.. but I remember when I got my hands on this ..was like the best Xmas present ever that I wasn’t supposed to have .. now I love everyday .. and this is still my fav of the two.. Lillywhite session is much better than busted stuff .. sounds better .. the Drums mostly .. the new versions cut out so much Toms , base , chokes .. anyways .. just happy it exists .. and remastered by other DMB fans with knowledge how to mix :) 😊
May be my favorite version of DMB..
Still have my burned cd a friend gave me in college !!
You can tell how *different* Grey Street is in this early form. The track seems only half-laid out, and the lyrcs ramble much more than in the final Busted Stuff version. But that thunderous ending, even more raw and emotional, is still there, and I'm glad they included it in the final track.
It's a very, very different, much less polished track than in Busted Stuff, but it's absolutely worth listening to. That long fade of the instrumental climax into silence still gives me the chills.
Listening to this now as an over forty this is by a margin, not sure how much, his best work musically and lyrically. Hits just right. I liked as a younger man as well but just hits different now.
Greatest version of grey Street dang i wish they would have put this album out just the way it is so raw and deep
dang it!!!🎉🎉
what a treat to hear a new dmb album...
how'd I miss this one??😎👀🌞
You heard the garbage that they released as Busted Stuff. They ditched Steve Lillywhite and re-recorded it.
I really love the sound of the acoustic guitar.
Had this demo tape back in 2001 and left it in the player when I sold the car 😢
Probably my favorite „album“ from them
thanks for sharing the full story in the description
Sorry for being the 42nd commenter, but so glad Brian uploaded this. The only thing to improve this would be some kind of fan video compilation.
Thank you for posting this treasure, so well -mixed, it feels so much warmer than the bootlegs
Great album. Wish they would release.. the bass on Monkey Man is outstanding. Fav version of Raven too
Monkey Man is the best
Rois bartender solo 🤯
Always loved these tracks … such an intense sadness to some of them that wasn’t there in busted stuff versions
Still love this, always will...in my opinion it will always be a cut above Busted Stuff...so raw and perfect.
A couple thousand views??!! This is one of the best bands in the last 80 years!!
No kidding!
Oh my god!!!!! Thank you for posting this! I’ve been looking for years.
Please just release this album!
We need a finished version of Monkey Man. And where's that studio version of Sugar Will that they recorded?
Thank you thank you for posting this!! Been searching and yearning to hear it for so many years. Busted Stuff was just not it for me after listening to this. Anyway, THANKS SO MUCH!!! ❤❤
God I love this. I love hearing the old members jamming...especially LeRoi's sensual and delicate touches❤
Just cause the things around your seem heavy, does not mean you cannot get off this ground. One of the most powerful vocal lines ever!
Busted Stuff is amazing, but JTR!!!!! I also bend the knee to Lillywhite
Bootleg copy or this “album” a friend gave me is what really really got me into dmb
Not only did Entertainment Weekly give it a better grade than "Everyday", it is tied for their highest rated DMB album. Funny enough, the other album is the eventual "Busted Stuff"
Thank you for this. So much. 🥰😭😍
Sweet!😊💜
some of these are really rough, but Grace is Gone and Captain are pure gold.
Agree
❤.
❤️.
This album also has a Japanese release with ants marching Live and the demo 2 best version of busted stuff imo also in my opinion everyday was one of dmb most best hard rock album, along side crash under the table and before these crowded streets.
Busted stuff final release i just listened to the CD I really noticed every single song besides bartender was so slow and not that rough but overall i do like the album it's just i prefer the Lillywhite sessions more.
Also im curious when dmb batson sessions 3 will come out already!
Im not used to there being lyrics to Kit Kat Jam! I love!
This album is amazing!!!
❤️
10 times the album everyday is and 2 times the album busted stuff is. the band was never the same after this. how can anyone prefer the other captain version
This Captain is leagues out of the others
👏👏👏😘🤗
DMB’s GoaT
Yup they def peaked at recording music in 1998-2000. UTTAD & Crash ya whatever. BTCS & LWS, pshhh, unreal.
Agree completely. Steve Lillywhite saw where the band could have gone had this been released. JTR, Monkey Man, Captain and Big Eyed Fish are some of my all time favs. BTCS is my favorite album of theirs but I think this may be a close second, shame it wasn’t released.
...it was scratched because of the frame of mind the band was going through collectively, and I’m not pointing out exactly who might have been the individual, do the research y’all...
🌬💨☝🏽💜💨💨
~ thanks B.W.
* get in touch, I have “some” dMb for you to hear
Yeah... Dave. He was in hell. He just proved that some creative genius can come from despair.
...exactly
The ReMastered (reprise) Audible
Does he say “grave street” near the end of grey street?
Maybe, he sounds high as fuck who knows
The Grey Street Busted Stuff version is way better than LWS version.
Not even close. The extra verse takes into another level.

So organic and deep. Too bad it was scratched. Would have been amazing after BTCS.
And she calls her father and he ignores her and ignores her pain. Fml
Didn’t think I could relate to Grey Street even more so this kinda blew my mind
Lillywhite > Busted Stuff
When he outed himself as the sell out he always was.
Captain would be at its best with LWS vibe and melody and Busted Stuffs lyrics.
