I hung a buck in my DIY cooler (also using the CoolBot) for 5-6 weeks...my wife said "Whatever you did to that last deer...do it again!". The meat was PERFECT! I normally dry-age deer for about 2-3 weeks before processing them, but that buck tasted AWESOME! 🦌👍
Thanks for the video. Most studies find that the meat reaches it's maximum breakdown in 18 to 21 days. I hang mine hide on for 18 days and then process. The amount of moisture vs 2-3 days is significant.
most generally Mine hangs 4 -7 days hide on so meat don't dry out. the winch idea is great for us older guy & gals. harbor freight has some really nice overhead winches for sale. seen ur video on tiktok jumped over here to see ur walk in cooler nice setup. thank you for sharing. & I subscribed. can't wait till season starts wife wants some of my famous deer jerky & steaks. have a awesome deer season be safe friends.
I believe you said that it has a concrete floor. It might help with the moisture problem when not in use to seal the floor. Also, just install a screen door and leave the regular door open until it’s dried out. We are currently building our cooler with the cool-bot. I can’t wait to get it going.
Wow, how many more times you going to ask this man about the hide being on?? Come on people before you ask a question, read a couple comments OR you could watch the whole video because he covered it in thr video as well! smh Great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it extremely informative!! 👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Great video and thanks for the wench idea. Honestly hadn't thought of that while planning one out. Dad always just hung it outside and let it rest overnight course back then was always cols enough to do that. Beyond that it was always as fast as possible cutting it up and straight to freezer camp. Looking a little more at having a cold room year round untill I can get a root cellar built. Gonna see if I can encorporate some of this into it.
You need a UVC light to deal with the mold and smell. Get yourself a 500 to 1000 watt metal halide or mercury vapor bulb (you may need a separate ballast/transformer). Break the outer glass globe without damaging the small interior quartz bulb. The outer glass bulb is just a UVC filter. Set it up so you can turn it on and off while outside the room. Turn the bulb on and the quartz bulb will produce huge amounts of UVC light, which kills everything, including mold, bacteria, and viruses. A plus is that the UVC light is so strong that it will also create Ozone 6 will sterilize anything that is in a shadow from the light. Leave it on for 30 minutes. DANGER - WHATEVER YOU DO. DO NOT EXPOSE YOURSELF TO THE UVC LIGHT. It will severely burn you and cause blindness. You can look at it through a glass window because glass filters out the UVC light.
what aren't you into lol, coolers, welding, pusherfans......I was researching the coolbot, I'm sold on it if you are on it if you are. thanks for the video.
Having to use someone else walk in cooler, I can leave mine hang for more than a couple of days. If I owned my own I'd let it hand for about a week or so.
I find it strange that you leave the hide on the animal since I was a boy here in Diablo mountains of coastal California myself and family have always removed the hide completely and hung the deer at least 7 to 10 days hogs is the same and beef 31 days at 38f obviously every animal is cleaned extremely well we will also spray the outside of the animal with a vinegar water mix to inhibit mold growth if needed. No judgement though everyone does things differently and as long as it works for you keep on truckin
It does add a small increase to my bill for the October & November months but it's a drop in the bucket when thinking about the amount of flexibility it gives us.
Dustin, thank you for doing this video. I have this in the works and have questions 😁. I too am limited to 110 and the biggest lg unit is 15000 but. I also want to build 8 foot wide 12 long and 8 tall . Store it cold reccomends the 18000 but it is 220. I hope and suspect the 15000 will do the job so long as the R value is met and there's no air leaks. Do you feel the 15000 will meet the need ? I know it will be an opinion and no guarantee .
Buy the best cry only once. It's a capacity and volume thing. Better to over due it. Yes it would cost more to install a 220 plug but ultimately will cost less to run.
I built a cold house, the room is 10 meters wide, 3 meters high, 2.5 meters, we installed a 2 ton air conditioner, I want to use it for fruit, it should be between 2 and 7 degrees so that the apple does not spoil.
I’ll have to build one someday once I get into another house it really sucked quartering up the last deer I shot until 1 am. On a side note how has it been 6 years already? I remember when you posted this on BFC.
That's completely false. I've allowed deer to hang for 10days in the cooler at 38⁰ & it looked like the day I hung it. Didn't lose anything. But it didn't age either. 2-3days is optimal. But the cooler environment allows you a lot of leeway.
@@dirtykitchenkids1737 no dried out layer bud. In a cooler you leave the hide on and it can't dry out like you're used to dealing with. Completely different way to do things.
@@dirtykitchenkids1737 yeah. If I had customers I'd never allow that. But since I'm the one taking care of everything I know the condition of what I'm bringing in & pay close attention to wound channels & undesirable body matter. I realize it's different for what most have always done or been taught, but it works well for me.

I’m bout 6 years in with my walk-in and coolbot as well. No issues. I hang deer (About 60 in 6 years) 2 wks minimum up to 21 days. No regrets.
You had me at "hunting and fishing!" and "having the woods to myself"
Having personally been in this cooler. It is awesome. Great build sir.
Appreciate you taking time to make this video. Some good advice. Thank you sir.

Thank you ! Amazing to have flexibility / freedom to hunt store and consume as u need .
Absolutely!

Normally when you unplug any kind of refrigerator. You should leave the door open to avoid that smell.

I have been thinking about buying this set up you convinced me thanks Jim cool bot should at least send you a hat or something
Or the upgraded version after doing 3 videos for them. I have an affiliate link that never worked.
Frp board I have a very similar set up and hang deer 7-10. Elk 10-12 days.

have you thought about completely sealing the concrete floor? Pros and cons of doing it?
how much does a set up like this add to your electric bill per month? if this is not on some sort of solar system.
40-50$ a month.
That's why I like to use a small caliber for headshots I waste no meat 3 to 5 days at 35 degrees
I prefer at least 5 days aging depending on what vitals where taken in the shot. A good heart shot I prefer 5 days. Double lung shot about 7.
How big is your AC unit? I’m running a 24K window unit with 8’ tall walls and 10x12 room with R30 all around .

Curious, why the concrete floor?
I always used my uncles cooler for hanging my deer. He wouldn't allow hair in his cooler, and skinned we only hung them 2 to 3 days.
Nice collection of poison oak lol
What about your power bill? Is it expensive to operate?

Why not leave the door cracked all spring and summer so it can vent

I skin my deer same day asap and would prefer to hang them 5 to 7 days.
Why not go ahead and skin it?
7 days?
I'm 99% sure that AC is a 14k BTU unit
Can keep lotta beer in there. Did I say beer I meant deer. 👍👍
Skin it in 15 mins and then hang it quartered. Save yourself the struggle lol
Why would u hang your deer with the hide on ..
Prevent it from drying out
@@DustinAppleI was wondering the same thing.
Thanks for the video! 👍🏻
10 days for me...
4 days to 7 days
3 weeks
I’d never let a deer hang more than 3 days. You’re going to lose a whole layer of your kill if you wait to long.
