Scotty never disappoints when it comes to making tutorial videos with the easiest fix. Seriously, it took me twice as long as Scotty's replacement time to just locate my motor mounts.
Boy do I ever wish to God I had seen this video a few months back. My sister rode around with bad motor mounts for forever because she couldn't afford to have a mechanic fix them. You make it look so easy. I love your channel. I've shared your videos with my dad. You make everything very easy to understand. Not many people can explain things especially when it comes to cars that the average person. I truly appreciate your channel and I love that you engage with your audience. So this is just a big thank you from a fan. I have a 2009 Mustang V6 and I discovered you when I needed to replace the crankshaft pulley on my car. Thank you for all of your informative videos. Before actually doing this on any "real" car, I'd look for a UA-cam vid showing how it's done with that particular type because every model has different stuff in the way and different ways of removing it. But hey, there's a lot of videos around - even for models that weren't built terribly often, so it's a good idea to encourage people to do their homework and then go for it.
I did my first engine mount (front one) a few years ago. Believe me, it doesn't take half hour like this video implies, it took me four hours or so. I had to partially remove the sway bar as well. I couldn't believe all the tools I had out for doing this seemingly straightforward job. I had to grind the edges of the replacement mount assembly to get it to fit in. I certainly felt a sense of accomplishment but wow, I hate to think what a more involved job would entail. That is why I am happier to pay a mechanic who knows what he is doing. I might take on more work again, just for the experience.
Hey Scotty I have 2000 Mitsubishi eclipse and I'm getting a lot of vibration when I switch Gears and my revs are Around 3k-7k, do you think it's the motor mounts or the front Drive shafts ?
glow__up Jason depends on how many km you have on the dash 100,000km it is your original drive shaft that has a problem its the bearing The one that looks like a + Scotty has a new video for it.
It works, so do it like Scotty does it, under the oil pan! You should technically find a sold place the manufacturer designates for lifting but what the f*ck huh!
@@Billy_W Yeah, I'm with you regarding the jack only needing to support a fraction of the engine weight, but for a novice not paying attention, a sump could very quickly end up with a big dent in it...! I recently replaced an engine mount, and I was fortunate enough to have a sub-frame layout that allowed me to support the clutch/transmission bell-housing, which worked well.
You make it seem so easy! I don't know much about cars so these videos are more for the advanced to know how to remove parts that are in the way of mounts :(
Great video, Scotty. Ive got a 1999 mazda 626 4-cylinder automatic transmission. Had to do transmission service because if a a case leak. Transmission has been rebuilt. Engine is great, does need a tune up, but after the car has been warmed up and when i change gears from park or neutral to reverse it thumps or clunks. Only going from a quick visual inspection the mechanic has said it is not the engine mount. With your video, along with other videos that have shown the same clunk or thump effect, i do suspect the motor mount(s) have worn out. Only had the front replaced, getting the rear replaced. Should ask mechanic to replace the first transmission mount thats under the battery and airbox. He did replace the one in front, by the radiator. It looks different than the one recommended in a auto parts store photo print out. Thanks again for the educating experience. Appreciate your time you take in making these videos.
+Scotty Kilmer -interesting you should say that. He is going to to have to replace the transmission. We paid for him to rebuild it. He said the mounts were good. Id still say he should he put in new transmission mounts.
Scotty saving the day 8 years later!!! I got the wrong mount because the system had it marked incorrect. Didn't notice until I took out the old one out. The first one I bought came with the bracket welded to the mount, and it was smaller and holes didn't line up at all. I needed one like this, where you keep the original bracket, and just get the cylinder. That bottom nut was tough, 15/16 inch, it's....nuts. Jobs is almost done. Hoping the vibration and cluncking is fixed.

Wish he would make a simple directory of all his videos that you can search command keywords such as "motor clunking when shifting" on a website or something. That way it'll show a list of his youtube videos where you can have an easier time. Been trying to figure out what was wrong with my car. XD Load and behold you tube's recommendation did not fail me this one time. As soon as he said "Does your motor clunk when shifting" I was like No Way!
richard webber You never jack a car up by the oil pan, even if you aren't lifting the whole car. =/ I'm sure he knows what hes doing, but that's just wrong. If its like a norm pan it will bend up, if its cast, it will crack.
Bunkers101 To be fair he's not jacking the car up. He's only supporting the motor while replacing one mount at a time. The whole weight of the engine is never being placed on the oil pan. I agree some wood between the jack and sump is a good idea it you're worried about scratches/dings. Personally I wouldn't bother.
I changed the passenger side mount today and it's fine to support the engine by the oil pan as lons as you use a wooden block. I was scarred but in the end everything was ok. Just lift the rear wheels to make it easier to remove the oil pan protector and support the motor near the oil pan board but not on it. To change the trans mount support it by the transmission. Thank you.
First Texas Honda in Austin Texas told me my "transmission was going bad". Took it to a mechanic and he said it was the engine mounts starting to wear out, but I could wait on it, no problem with transmission.
Changing mounts isn't too hard, unless the brackets or the bolts that hold the mounts/brackets are broken and in a hard to reach place way in the back of the engine and you have to weld onto them to fix them (so they don't do that again!). I had two of them with that problem, one where a bolt head busted through the bracket holding the mount (I had to have a thick washer welded onto where the bracket broke) and the other bolt holding the bracket busted off and I had to use a lefty drill bit and easy-out to remove, and the other mount where the bolt holes on the mount itself broke through. The odd thing is the rubbers on those two mounts were good. The other two mounts had the usual broken rubber.
Huh that might be why my Jeep clunks when i put it in reverse, usally in drive you hear it but not loud, and I thouht it might be the transmission, but thats in excellent shape, huh awesome video Scotty.
May I make a suggestion? While UA-cam is great for having a lot of these 'how to' videos, it gets VERY frustrating when you need something specific, and all these videos have generic titles. Since so many vehicles are different year to year, and model to model, even within the same manufacturer, "How to replace a Motor Mount or Transmission Mount" really doesn't tell me anything. "Replacing a motor/transmission mount, Ford/GM/Toyota?Hyundai, etc 02-09" would tell us everything we need. Yours is a very informative video, but I don't have a Ford van.For those who do, this is the video they need. I have a 1997 Cadillac Eldorado, which is specifically what I searched for, so why am i here? Because there's a whole list with the same generic title you used, and I have to look through every one of them to find what I need. Thanks.
Scotty , you are the best mechanic I've ever seen I have a 2006 mercury Milan 6cyl. Is it the same way to fix it ? This person called it a dog bone. I hope you get back to me doc.
dog bone mounts, or torque strut mounts, if its like mine - on the top in plain view- can be replaced without jacking it up. just remove the 2 bolts, remove and replace mount, install the 2 bolts tight and voila.
I have the same Focus lol... Color, motor, and everything. The motor mounts on the Zetec engines have been known to go bad like the thermostat housing.
hi, Scotty, I like your video, we are making engine mounts in China, so as shock absorber supports. I will share your UA-cam to my customers, I think it will help their customers for installing.
you made this video at the perfect time Scotty! thanks. I am not getting any clunking noise but if I shift (manual transmission) and hit the gas I will sometimes get some jerking, sometimes it is really bad. It is a 1998 nissan frontier 2.4 manual with the origional mounts 100k miles. Would new mounts be stiffer? Thanks and keep doing what you are doing! I enjoy the videos. The other youtube mechanics turn a simple job into a 50 minute video.
i love that those have notches so you can only put it in one orientation. one of mine was symmetrical so lots of users with the same car complained why it broken too fast. :(
Remember about wright tightening torque of the screws when replacing parts in your car. In my car Espace 4, tightening torque are from 21Nm one screws to 190Nm the other! It is safety matters. Check your book.
I have a mount with a severely ripped bushing and my front one has a small rip but I was thinking of filling the gaps in that one with polyurethane caulking. It would also help reduce my engine movement too as I have a turbo and more torque than stock.

You really shouldn't jack up on the oil pan
That's what I was thinking
then where should i jack up ? i planning to change my motor mounts ..
you use a jack and a piece of wood and gently jack the oil pan, or you use a cherry picker engine hoist to lift the engine up
Scotty has been doing this for decades , you just watched a Chris Fix video and think you're a pro now.
Manufacturers actually state that you shouldn't use a jack under the oil pan to lift the car.
Your awesome! I like how your videos get to the point and are full of advice. Good example is the P0171 vacuum leak video with the cigar.
Aftermarket motor mounts are garbage....buy OEM

Scotty hasn't aged. I'm watching this in 2020. Haha
please don't put your jack on your transmission pan lol you're begging for trouble
or the engine oil pan.. it should be placed on a solid or sitting point designed to hold weight.
With a block of wood, it's usually pretty safe.
Exactly, I've done it countless times without issue.
I'm assuming you guys all did it with a steel pan? ^
Ralph Livingston is that why my cars Oil Pan says "lift engine with wood block"
First Texas Honda in Austin Texas told me my "transmission was going bad". Took it to a mechanic and he said it was the engine mounts starting to wear out, but I could wait on it, no problem with transmission.
Changing mounts isn't too hard, unless the brackets or the bolts that hold the mounts/brackets are broken and in a hard to reach place way in the back of the engine and you have to weld onto them to fix them (so they don't do that again!). The odd thing is the rubbers on those two mounts were good. The other two mounts had the usual broken rubber.
That was by far his most simplistic fix

Scotty I love you, You have helped me Dozens of times with my car !!! Thank you!!!
This man is a certified g
Hope you're doing good sir. Always coming back.
I love you Man. . .... I learn a lot through this channel... Scotty the animal SIMBA
Love the fast paced video making!!
Do you have video for a 2009 Traverse ? Thank's for your tremendous help in so many ways 👍🙌👏
I have the same Focus lol... Color, motor, and everything. The motor mounts on the Zetec engines have been known to go bad like the thermostat housing.
Scotty is a genius
Good clip and easy straight foward.
Your the man Scotty 💪🏼💯
What do you think about filling motor mount holes with polyeurothane to make them more solid? I recommend getting new mounts then do it.
You make it so easy Scotty. And those endings are so cute haha.
hi, Scotty, I like your video, we are making engine mounts in China, so as shock absorber supports. I will share your UA-cam to my customers, I think it will help their customers for installing.
That oil pan is strong 💪
It is so strong that you can pierce it with a stone or a piece of ice. I don't understand how you can use oil pan for the engine support!?
you made this video at the perfect time Scotty!
As always thanks for the great video Scotty--gotta do the motor mounts on my Avalon one of these days....
I have a mount with a severely ripped bushing and my front one has a small rip but I was thinking of filling the gaps in that one with polyurethane caulking. It would also help reduce my engine movement too as I have a turbo and more torque than stock.
Perfect timing scotty! Mine are going bad on my 05 Toyota Matrix!
I love his personality he cracks me up lol
