Meramec River - Smallmouth Bass - Solo Canoe Trip May 2023

- The Smallies were really biting throughout the entire day on my 9 mile solo float trip. I narrowed down all the footage to these 13 fish that were the best ones. I had not floated this section of the river in several years, and I was excited to see that the population was still strong and healthy. I saw lots of wildlife, but not a single other person all day.
The weather started out fairly nice and got cloudy before long, but it was pretty much perfect conditions. The water was also at a great level and clarity. Several times I could see the bass dart out from under a log and inhale my lure. I caught a few on some topwater lures, but most of the fish I landed fell to the simple tube jig. Man those smallmouth love anything that looks like a crayfish! I found that most of the fish I caught this day were around logjams in slower water rather than the rocky, riffled water, so I spent a lot more time in the canoe fishing rather than wading along sand bars.
Can't wait to get back and catch some more. While I didn't catch any truly trophy fish on this trip, I have pulled a few of them to hand in years past so I know they're in there. I still managed to get a few real nice ones though.
Thanks for watching!
Great video
Thanks!
Being a local, that’s one of my favorite stretches! Always catch nice smallies and goggle eye. I call that float my ‘sun up to sun down’ float. Thanks for the video!
Yep it’s so much good water on that stretch it’s almost worth doing an overnight on a gravel bar to really cover it all thoroughly. I did the same float early October and we had less success though. Anyways glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!
What a day!
Where was your take off
This looks awesome 🎉
Sorry I can’t share specifics, but I will say it’s good smallmouth fishing around the Steelville area
I've got to get out, this video really amped me up!! Where were you? I'll go from the Springs down. Great video!
You should get into some smallies on that float down from the Springs. Just pay attention to the regs because soft plastics aren’t allowed in that stretch. A rebel crawfish is usually great through there, plus you’ll probably get some trout, too.
@@FishFearMe for sure! There are some good holes that hold ‘em. I live in the area and fished it all my life really. You are correct on the regs too, good point. Some really good holes down from Scott too. Unfortunately after this weekend it starts getting pretty crowded with the rowdy floaters. It’s just a great river to fish though. I love this video!
@@shootstraight68 Thanks for the kind words and I will try to keep making more videos! In the meantime, get out there like you said and get some fish on your line!
Have either of you guys caught any decent size browns on the meramec?
Great video, did you try the fly rod?
Yeah for a little bit, I posted another video from the same trip a few days before this one where I caught 3 on a popper. I tried some bigger streamers in some of the riffled water but didn’t get any on that.
What was your choice of lure?
A 3.5 inch brown plastic tube jig with a 1/16 oz jig hook
What do you use?
Just a soft plastic tube on a 1/16oz jig hook
where is this at?
The upper Meramec around Steelville, MO
