I previously discussed prunes and constipation in Prunes vs. Metamucil vs. Vegan Diet (nutritionfacts.org/video/prunes-vs-metamucil-vs-vegan-diet/)
Hi! What about dried prunes? Do they work also? Because they're easier to get ahold of in winter...
Always diving straight to the core, never just PRUNING around the edges.
Great info. I love prunes but I have trouble stopping. Vegan, so no constipation ever. I will try to have no more than 8 a day in the future. Your video's are so informative. I always go to you for answers when I need real info.
My daughter used to not be able to stop drinking the juice, and she wondered why she had diahrea lol
@@TerriLynch lol.
A nurse gave me this University of Michigan Constipation Prevention Recipe after a surgery: 3/4 cup prune juice, 3/4 cup applesauce, and 3/4 cup raw oats mix and freeze in an ice cube tray. Store in the freezer in a ziploc bag and each morning microwave two cubes and eat. It works like a charm!
My Mom was told by a nurse at Wake Med in NC to mix 4 oz OJ & 4oz Prune Juice and microwave and drink to prevent constipation. It was more effective than the stool softeners and laxatives she had been told to take by the Doctor.
Thanks again Dr. Greger for informing us about the benefits of a plant-based diet!
that recipe sounds like gold! gonna give it a try!
2+ cups ... That's a hell of a lotta ice cubes.
@@justgivemethetruth divide the recipe as needed.
Excellent advice! High intake of vitamin c can do a number on you!
Prunes also make a great sweetener in savory dishes and condiments!! Prunes are now marketed as Dried Plums.
I bought a huge bottle of prune juice when I was a kid, drank the whole thing thinking it was just a refreshing fruit drink. Boy did I regret it when I woke up the next morning 😅
Your body didn't regret that's for sure 😉
Naturopath < the most common complaint I encounter is constipation.
Prunes and prune water are the cheapest and one of the more effective methods to ease when or if it occurs. While the best method is life style changes.
I just love prunes as a sweet snack
Prunes help with bowl movements. Really hard-hitting stuff this week.
The problem with prunes is that they taste SO GOOD you don't want to stop eating them....One time I bought a quart of prune juice because I didn't try it for years It was so good I downed it all and I had to RUN to the bathroom in the middle of the night....
Fam i’ve been constipated for the last week and a half. I saw your comment earlier today so I ran to Walmart n got me big bottle of prune juice. I just drank my 1st cup with some food n omg I have to run to the restroom as soon as I finishEd eating. I know it’s a lot of information but I thank you now I feel a lot better
This is the 1st time I've ever heard someone start a video with 'the act of defecation"....
The laxative effects in eating prunes is exclusively due to the contents of sorbitol:
- 1,40 g sorbitol / 100 g prunes
- 6,57 g sorbitol / 100 g dry prunes
Prunes are delicius but I don't dare eat them as much as I want to. Never constipated....a bit in the other direction though.
That last chart said baseline defecations per week was 2.2!? 🤯 per week? How do you eat everyday and only relieve yourself twice a week?? That’s got to be miserable. You’re definitely not active in that case.
It is ok because stool is denser compared to the food you put in your mouth. Also depends on what you eat. Imagine you drank coffee in the morning with butter and some caviar, and then protein shake at lunch and soup for dinner. How much stool would that produce?
Males and females are very different creatures when it comes to bowel movements!
@@dawnrobbins5877 yes i definitely agree with this... Men have much high metabolism
I don’t find organic prunes, but I have no problem with constipation at all. I eat plant based, no gluten, mostly orgânics.
Thank goodness i never have this problem ever in my life, even in my meat eating days by the standard of daily bowel movement. However, i was often constipated by TCM standard but now no more. I blend my daily green smoothie sweetened w/ 1/2 orange in the morning & 2 pitted prunes in the evening to replace my dinner. I go toilet minimum twice daily now, more times if i eat more.
What is TCM?
@@justgivemethetruth traditional chinese medicine. According to their theory people need to poop twice a day to be “normal”. If you don’t poop morning & evening, then you’re constipated.

Water is the first defense ... just drink a couple bottles of water. Include prunes too.
Yeah, I've known this for some time. My son was constipated recently and prunes help him right away.
wondering what in his diet caused this?
@@curiousbystander9193 and he used to have diarrhea anytime he ate fruit.
@@methanial73 interesting.... it seems like certain fruits must have been much worse than others?
Didn't give him much. Very small portions and then no problem. Of course banana is a stool firmer so he was ok with those. He grew out of it anyway.
I once drank a bunch of prune juice that I heated in the microwave. It was tasty -- truly a warrior's drink. But it was explosive later. It's good hot, but don't overdo it.
I've had the chance to buy prunes and put it to test but I got severe nausea and felt really worse I think maybe because they weren't organic and they weren't even properly cleaned. So make sure you get prunes from a place you can taste beforehand and in well state. I've managed to get a proper provider with organic prunes and everything went perfectly fine! As stated in the video is absolutely true.
As always, a great video.
Love some prunes once’s in awhile. I only eat 2 and it’s enough. Sometimes boiled is even better. I try to have one when I take constipating causing d3.
1 a day for me. with an apricot, a date and a banana. with 5 different nuts.
Nice combo
Very tasty, but I get lots of churning, boiling and gas in the colon after prunes, not good. It seems to help with constipation though.
Me too
@@Jamesnebula i'm gonna try less prunes at a time :)
boiling?
How do people with almost zero fiber diet have smooth bowl movement?!
Go plant based and get plenty of fiber. That makes for a healthy elimination tract (and every othet body system too.)
Do you actually check on everybody else’s bowel movements!?!
Just reading the word prunes and I am ready to go. I can not imagine anyone eating 8 prunes - that is a lot!
Increased stool frequency from 2.8 to 3.5/week? Yikes!
Definitely eat more fruit and veg.
Am i the only one that eats lots of fiber drinks tons of water and I’m still constipated while being vegan😭
do you consume salt oils? vegan junk ? there could be a lot of culprits
@@madjennsyARG i do from time to time, i even tried the fodmap diet
Go see a doctor! Maybe you eat too little, or your gut bacteria/flora is upset...
Sounds like true irritable bowel to me. Any Crohn's Disease in your family?
@@purpleldv966 i did a ct scan and he said it’s constipation 🤷🏼♀️
If such a huge percentage of people with IBS can have improvement via the placebo effect, as is mentioned in the video, why is the placebo effect not applied more directly as a source of relief? Why is the science of it not studied more? Perhaps people can be trained or taught to communicate directly with their body, instead of just being tricked into that communication via a placebo.
Plums work too, and taste better than prunes.
I agree they taste better, though it might be a challenge to eat 8 a day though :D
What about the sugar content? Eating just a few prunes makes me dizzy!
If Prune juice is good enough to clean out a Klingon, then it's good enough for you.
Fantasia. Thank you for sharing. 💎💙
Are plumbs equally effective?
That's something I would like to know too!
@@koreyb Yeah I must admit they seem to be for me too. I have a plum or two before breakfast and then a few prunes with supper. It seems to be helping to keep things regular!
I don't think so. The prunes help to absorb water and swell once consumed. The plum, because it is hydrated, may not be as effective. I'm just guessing though!
They also support optimum bone health and can boost testosterone in men
That would make a great movie title. "Blood on the Toilet Paper".
Sorry Dr Greger, I draw the line at eating prunes! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hello there Bobbi nice meeting you here
another solution....and better in some ways....start your day with a slice of cantaloupe....put some chevre goat cheese in your diet (not feta).....eat a small slice of cantaloupe with dinner if you need, so start there and work to eating just 1 slice in the morning ......you don't need the extra sugar once you start getting the gut biome working better...use that chevre in place of butter, on veggies, in soups, etc......
most constipation is caused by proteins binding with carbs in the in the upper gi tract, and acidic food and drink encourages this process....which leads to a poor biome, villi degradation, and constipation.
Holy crap! (lol) ... Vegan - so if I eat four/day it's too much...
*I LOVE PRUNES* (( _but they make me fart like a steam train with diarrhoea_ ))
Both very high FODMAD foods. This is very bad advice for IBS-c sufferers. (Because prunes only work momentarily as a laxative and then afterwards your IBS is worse)
where does cantaloupe fit on the fodmap scheme?...cause I find my daily small amount of cantaloupe with some chevre goat cheese extremely effective for constipation and very low inflammation.....while prunes are effective for the constipation yet inflammatory....I suspect the skins have lectins and the acids in prunes cause some protein.carb binding.......that's the thinking cause the body seems to know something.
I get lot of gas from prune
"A warriors drink." - Worf
start a movement eat prunes
its nice source of diabetes as well
Do you mean prunes put you at risk for diabetes or deters it?
@@iranjackheelson it will make your diabetes worse, check your insulin levels before consuming homa ir test
@@FuckJewTube664 yeah but it is not the cause of diabetes and it will make it better once you drop the body fat (get lean) and dietary fat to low lvl.
For those who are at risk for diabetes, I think they should try something with indigestible carbs like okra.
Fair point, 8 prunes is about 70 to 80 grams of carbs, a lot in other words.
Yet another case of science proving the bible wrong.
Dried sugar? Not diabetic friendlay
