I’ve been on this way of eating for 14 years & have found literally no one who cares to hear any of it. I don’t talk about it unless prodded, such as ordering takeout at work or being offered a non compliant food. Just recently my niece has expressed a passing interest after my brother (a huge meat eater) died very quickly from an aggressive cancer.
I'm the other way around! Tell me what I'm doing wrong and back it up with clear, provable evidence and I'll happily change my ways. I wish I'd learned about these four habits when I was younger!
I think the part about people being demotivated because they feel judged by those who have achieved a healthy state speaks more to the current state of emotional insanity and extreme narcissism that our civilization is currently in, than anything else. I wonder if those Americans without health insurance are a bigger factor than eating? At this point it is unfair to compare US populations to just about any other country with universal health care when it comes to life expectancy.

We can get outside most days in the temperate regions where most of our population is. Any theories? (forgive the generalisations).

What if you smoked earlier in your life, or if you smoke a cigarette or two per week currently. how do the numbers plunge, if it all. Not looking for permission, but it is enjoyable in social situations and its quite limited. for instance, what if one cuts out meat but smokes a few cigs a week? or, what if one doesn't smoke, but eats a burger a week? Can we know the effects of these "tweaks"? ( i mean, the "never smoke" seems to allude to many of us already being SOL)
I smoke 2-3 times a day. I don't worry about it too much. There must be a dose so low that any negative effects are insignificant. Smoking 1-2 times a week or eating junkfood 1-2 times is probably not a big statistical difference. Smoking life expectancy calculators tell me that quitting smoking 2 cigarettes a day at my age(middle age) is not gonna make a difference statistically.

So. People with unhealthy lifestyles are stubborn about changing. And cling on to any excuse not to change, including "The physician is being holier than thou". No surprise there. That's just people being human.

Very interesting, great, video .... important points. Vegetarians are sometimes annoying, at least to me, because in general they have the right idea, but the proof is in the pudding, and people just claiming to be vegetarian but who often have some pretty bad habits themselves act like they are on the winning vegetarian team. I am all for vegetarians, but I also think that lightly eating a bit of meat, say the equivalent of the meat on a pizza, or the meat in vegetable fried rice, to get a little of the nutrients of meat and not eating a huge steak every day or many of the other obviously unhealthy things carnivores do, fast food, etc, I have not seen any studies that significantly prove that - let me put it this way - there is not a lower limit to meat eating that is just as or almost equivalently safe to eating vegan. I also think there is a lot going on that people who do these studies from both sides do not talk about, for instance the effects on the meat we do eat of what we feed the animals, or how they are "processed". We are still in the dark ages, so my main point would be that we have to keep that in mind.
@Dookie Bookie > T. Colin Cambells studies show 10% animal protein promotes cancer, while plant protein prevents and reverses it. You better read that book again. Campbell claimed that he could turn on and off cancer by diet. I don't think anyone has recreated or verified those finding, but it sound great for people who want to pop off in internet forum. Human are not herbivore either. Human are omnivores, and some apes are even carnivorous, hunting in groups, killing and eating monkey. There is no such thing as certitude, and when you act like all information is in or that you personally have been exposed to and believe is special you are just fooling yourself.
Very interesting the latter finding on human responses to excellence. People not doing so well can become resentful of those doing it better , or read it that way. Not valid response but human nevertheless. if we are to influence others an attitude of collaboration rather than preaching is more effective. The conflictual milleu about diet also engenders tribalism and "better than" front-offs.
Hi, Zack Rowell! Haha! Probably not. Biological age is more relevant in middle aged and older people than it is in younger people. That doesn't mean that what you do when you're young doesn't affect life expectancy, because it does. Not sure how much of this is true or indeed useful. Seems to be a lot of mixed language in this video. Talks of "may", "might", "could" but at the same type makes statements like "a rise in risk 36%". You can't attribute a rise in risk, which is a cause and effect statement, in the same breath as saying something "could" be the cause. He is making an absolute statement from a fact that is not absolute. That's just not right and it's definitely not science but then Dr Greger is not a scientist. Yes, of course you should look after yourself but there is no proof that you need to eat 5 fruit and vegetables a day to live a longer life. All of these studies can only ever report on associations. Associations can never prove cause.

Meh, really, “help my patients meet their own personal health goals … Everyone has their own definition of a healthy life and what it means to be healthy for them”? Human health is a little more objective than that. And, frankly, a lot of people are totally ignorant about what their numbers (bp, weight, triglycerides, etc) mean, what causes them, what’s healthy, what to do to achieve healthy levels, and what happens if they don’t (death, disease). Good grief, doctors, educate your patients objectively!

I’ve been on this way of eating for 14 years & have found literally no one who cares to hear any of it. I think the part about people being demotivated because they feel judged by those who have achieved a healthy state speaks more to the current state of emotional insanity and extreme narcissism that our civilization is currently in, than anything else. These things are self evident. Everyone knows how to be healthy already, they just don't want to commit to it.
I used to work with a gentleman who swore he was healthy because he was vegetarian, but his version of vegetarian included bean burritos from Taco Bell. So it’s not so self-evident.
@@doubles1545 You'd be surprised that Doctor Greger has eaten bean burritos from Taco Bell, because in some places that is the only vegan food available. It's not intuitive but it' surprisingly healthy! Eating just beans, tortilla and guacemole is actually a simple, low fat, high protein, nutrient dense meal. Could be much worse, don't you think?

Most do tors in America didn’t learn much of anything about how to help their patients be healthy. My nephew is a doctor and he says they learned next to nothing about “How to get and stay healthy with a good, healthy, healing natural diet.” He assumed that would be part of their training in med school and he was wrong. They did learn all about which drugs to prescribe for various conditions. American’s rank #54 in average lifespans by the way even though we spend more on ‘healthcare’ than any other nation on Earth.

According to google, the people in Hong Kong enjoy the longest life expectancy @ 85.3 years.
Hong kongers also eat one of the highest amount of meat in the world @ 660 g (24 ounces) per person per day.

NYC investor Irving Kahn who lived to age 109 thought his long life was due to a decent diet and a love of his work. It turns out his 3 siblings all lived passed the age of 100 including 1 sister who thought a fun life was drinking, smoking and going to parties and eating rich food. A researcher found out they had genetics of a higher than average HDL cholesterol level and a slightly elevated TSH or what would be a slightly under active thyroid.
I’d be pretty upset if I only got an extra 9 years for doing the “right thing” for a 100… especially at that age. The sister definitely won that in my book

I live in Australia and I was reading that our country has one of the highest life expectancies in the world! Is it our sunshine? Our health care system (may it RIP)? We are alcohol drinking, meat charring, TV watching, increasingly overweight ;) but we have a lot of sunny coastline and cleanish air. We can get outside most days in the temperate regions where most of our population is. Any theories? (forgive the generalisations).
After working overseas with a lot of Australians and travelling in OZ, I'd have to add "sense of humor" to the list of positives.
The longevity is nice but the reduction in morbidity is what excites me.

I gather a lot of valuable info from your videos. Thx. However, the glucose/insulin levels of people of this country prove that sugar and FRUIT are detrimental.
I’m mostly vegan although I eat small amount of fish and one egg a day. I do intermittent fasting (18/6) everyday. I cutout sugar and all refined grains (rice, bread and pasta) although I eat small amount of whole food tubers such as sweet potatoes, yams and taro roots. I walk 4 miles a day. My A1c is 5.3, my blood pressure is 100/60, my triglyceride is 64, my HDL is 92. My BMI is 24. I’m over 60 years old. I do not need prescription medications. I really love the video from Greger's lecture How not to die. He talks about chronic desease and when camera turns to the audience, you can see thousands of people, who are either obese, or morbidly obese. No one with healthy waight. Sure, that was a lecture in the USA.
“What is your health goal?” “Do you think incorporating a healthy diet could possibly help you meet your goal?”
So. People with unhealthy lifestyles are stubborn about changing. And cling on to any excuse not to change, including "The physician is being holier than thou".
No surprise there. That's just people being human.
Animal based is the best for me. I do best with little to no plants.

To all those sharing anecdotal ‘evidence’, sure, imagine putting all your collective 90+ yro relatives in a room and see them argue about food, alcohol, smoking. Chaos will ensue. Why y’all try so hard to draw meaning out of 1 person’s experience when we have a science-based approach so easily available here?
I never smoked, was never overweight (let alone obese), eat no processed sugar, and eat a diet dominant in whole plant foods (maybe 3-5% animal foods tops, and no processed foods). But the one thing that I just can't seem to get into the habit of is exercise. Mainly because I appear to be in good shape without exercise, so I don't find myself able to do it.
@Dookie Bookie
Just a thought - put your camera a little higher than your face, so we aren't looking up your nose.🥰
So if I’m 26, does that make me biologically 12??
Hi, Zack Rowell! Haha! Probably not. Biological age is more relevant in middle aged and older people than it is in younger people. That doesn't mean that what you do when you're young doesn't affect life expectancy, because it does. You can think of it more as a proportion of the years you have lived than as a hard and fast number. I hope that helps!

Is starting in late 60s too late?
no, look up the story of dr greger's grandma
Is Dr Greger vegan?
