Global Express Challenging Landing in ASPEN, CO | COLD WX & MOUNTAIN OPS | 4K Video

- Welcome back to the Global Life!
Back into Aspen, but this time taking a bit more time to look at how to treat and operate the Global Express in cold weather operations as well as in and out of mountainous terrain.
Bombardier has created an extensive "checklist" of items that must be attended to on the aircraft if it is to be left outside in cold temperatures for an extended period of time. As pilots it is our responsibilities to care for the plane and ensure it functions properly even after being cold soaked.
Taking off from within the Americain Rockies, we proceed on a short hop to Aspen, CO. This airport never ceases to amaze me, as the complexity and skill level required to operate in and out of it remains one of the highest I've yet to see.
You'll notice during the video that I disconnected the Autothrottles. The reason being that while on approach ,even fully configured, the need to modulate spoilers remains to maintain Vref unti landing. The Autothrottles are designed to protect the airplane when the spoilers are out, never going slower than 30kts above stall speed. In order to achieve REF while using the spoilers, therefore, it is imperative to remain on manual throttles.
The use of the HUD (Heads up Display) is great in this instance as the PF never has to look down to monitor speeds.
As always feel free to ask any questions and leave any comments below and I'll be absolutely happy to answer every one!

I was your age yesterday ( 62 now) US Navy working on F-14/DC-8/DC-9.....bet you got some awfully proud parents young man! Enjoy the ride, the sunsets, and the kiss of the woman you love!
James that's one of the nicest things ever said to me here. Thank you
Thank you so much from america for all your great films and hard work.
My pleasure Steven!!
Jean congratulations on the NBAA Top 40 under 40! With my ultimate goal being large cabin corporate and making it into the Top 40 under 40 as well, your channel is great introduction to large cabin jet operations and the high level of professionalism that’s required. The attention to detail, the CRM, the knowledge of the airplane systems, limitations, and the airmanship. Top notch all the way around. Thank you so much for posting these videos! Hopefully we cross paths on the road or at an IOC convention in the future! Safe travels!
Hi Josh! Wow thank you so much for the kind words. It's been a real pleasure putting those up and hopefully I'll continue to do so as long as the flying keeps up! Looking forward to meeting some day soon!
That was a perfect landing.. Thanks
Thanks Jon!! 😊 Take them when I can haha
Very nice!
Great video! 🤙
Really enjoyed your commentary on why you chose to do things the way you did. Everything looked completely professional and safe.
Thank you! Very grateful you stopped by!
Looking very nice.
You are welcome.
great work! greased that landing at close to max weight would be great to see more of the panel during the flight. thanks for sharing. you guys rock!
Thanks!!! Working on keeping the channel going :)
Thanks for your videos! Preparing myself for an upcoming flight from Germany to KASE on a Global 6000 and your videos help a lot! Hope we won’t need to go to Rifle due to weather though… 😊
That's great to hear! Glad it could help in some way. Aspen is a great destination - safe travels and happy holidays!
Your channel deserves more subscribers and the Global deserves a decent representation for Prepar3d. :-)
Thanks Lars! 🙏
X-PLANE 11 needs a Global
Yess!!
Someone forgot to contact tower aftey they cleared you for the visual haha! 😂
eeehhh.. we talked to them eventually! :D
Now that's a long flight. LOL. What is it maybe 80 miles? Not far in any event. Thanks for showing the cold weather requirements on the big Global. Be safe!
My pleasure! It was indeed a very short flight haha!
I love the flight and the sunny day. I am loving he idea of flying everyday and you also happen to be flying my favourite Jet - Bombadier GLOBAL Jet - Mine is 7500.
One day I'll get to try the magnificent 7500!!
@@GlobalLife Why do jets rattle and make squicky sounds when they land? I have seen that from every cockpit video i have seen.
@@SAMblessed There's a lot of moving parts on an airplane. Runways aren't the smoothest surfaces despite appearances
@@GlobalLife Hmm, i thought so and indeed from the video runways look or appear very smooth. I guess the plane needs to be well taken care of bearing in mind how fast it hits the ground running, that thud, takes a great toll on the plane parts and thus the need for much care for the plane.

You made that approach look so easy Jean. Loved the way you two worked together and especially the way the PNF seemed to pre-empt everything so you could concentrate on the final phase of the landing. If this had been a straight in approach at a normal airport, what alt would you normally drop the gear?
Cheers Shaun, and yes I love the CRM we have going
On a typical approach gears would come down a dot below the glideslope if ILS, or 2NM prior to FAF
@@GlobalLife FAF ??? I'm not a pilot :)
@@Shaun-mg5ni Final Approach Fix - in this case "DOYPE" on the plate
Was manual thrust the challenging part? It doesn't get nicer than that in Aspen.
You're correct. Aspen itself is the challenging part - from planning to executing a stabilized approach with a 75,000lbs jet.
That whole flight you kept looking over your left shoulder. Why?
Because of the way we arrived to Aspen, the airport ended up being to my left for most of the approach. I was looking for it, then at it ;)
@@GlobalLife Oh... I thought you saw somebody you knew.... hahaha
😂😂
Was that Rifle, CO🤔?
You bet!
Is this the dangerous airport than everyone talks about?
Depends, who have you been talking to 😊
@@GlobalLife From what I read and see.
It certainly is one of them yes. I'd say it's been one of the most challenging airports I've encountered, along with Innsbruk. It requires knowledge and preparation to ensure a smooth arrival and always be ready for plan B!
no where to park indoors up there bro i keep my 8x there just covered, i live there aspen is a good flight from KAPA, 1 min to denver, snow to red tabve to Falcon direct KAPA, and they dont care if you land with a 50 knot tailwind all iron over 10,000 lands 33 takes off 15 dangerous shit...
And its cost them many times with wind sheer..
