I had the same "just in case" mentality too but once I moved to a different house; I realized some items are just burdens to carry. Once you realize the struggle of having to continually keep up with the item, it becomes so much easier to let go of it. And I've noticed (although I could be wrong) that it is much harder for the older generations, such as my parents, to give up on items than for the newer generations.
Awesome. I am cleaning out my closet today. I have a full wardrobe in FOUR sizes. I have been hanging on to the smaller sizes in hopes I would get back there. And I AM on a successful weight loss journey but I am getting rid of the entire wardrobe in all the sizes. I will buy new whatever size I end up at in my new minimalist mindset. I currently have something like 10-12 pairs of pants in FOUR sizes. And accompanying jackets and shirts and dresses. I will start by saving 2 in each size and clear out the rest. I am starting this afternoon.
Lots of takeaways here...first and foremost...never ever tell people, especially coworkers and relatives, what and why you are going to do something that's a big change in your life plan. There are always those who love to discourage and place seeds of doubt, some out of concern, but more out of jealously or just not wanting you to be happier than they are. BTW, Thank you for your newsletter with the great information.
This is so true. I teach my daughter to keep her vision, plan, and goals to herself. It only takes a person saying one thing that will make you start questioning yourself.
What an awesome video!!! I played basketball from 3rd grade through college and received lots of trophies and medals. As much sentimental value they bring me they bring me just as much dust and clutter. I recently created a video describing them all and documenting what they meant to me as a way of letting go. I'm donating them to the local sports shop so they can be refurbished and available for a future high achieving athlete. It was tough but letting go is important, we all have memories 😊
i sold my house 6yrs ago, and halved everything i owned at that time, then continued the "halving" every year since then (it took a while because i still had to produce a survival income stream from "the pile"), and finally last year, got the remaining "bullion cube" of my former life into a travel van....now wrapping up 2yrs of touring the US, and will soon compress what's in the van down to two (maybe one) suitcases, and offshore myself for my remaining chapters.......the process has been amazing....challenging and cathartic in many ways, for sure, BUT....renewing, invigorating, and deeply inspirational much more so..... as an artist with an eye for the "art in everything", ive come to call this kind of letting go process "creating with intentional vacuum"......no less than a collaboration with the infinite, without need to label or name it, but just to recognize our inseperable connection and dance with it.... good job......best to you....
Thanks for sharing your story. I am at the beginning of the process. I won’t be quite so extreme, but am working to get down to the mainly useful and enjoyable items and get rid of the junk. Safe travels!
I literally quit my full-time job 2 days ago because I'm finally ready to start my own business. I've been dreaming about this since I was 5 years old, not even joking! I've never been this happy in my life...but in Germany we have a 3 *months* notice, so I need to keep working for 3 more months until I can finally pursue my dream 😆 But still....devine timing with this video, Erika 🙌🏾
Your words really hit home. I've aspired to achieve the minimalist life, but didn't have a method to get there....until your video. I've been through Beanie Babies, many collectables stored away, trading cards, you name it. Many things stored away, untouched for years, boxed and dragging me down. Thank you for this video. Discovered you today, and feel that you are the catalyst for me to a better more successful version of me. Cheers, Mike K
I’m 57 and I will pull out a top, skirt dress or accessory that I haven’t worn in years but love. So the one year rule isn’t necessary as you get older if your items are classic and you’re wearing the same size.
I just came across one of your TikTok’s, and I don’t like TikTok much. You’re awesome. I’ve been an entrepreneur since I dropped out of high school, and in one of my current consulting businesses I work with many law firms. You’re a perfect example of the positives of social media and definitely that not that all attorneys are the same!
Im 65, my wife and i purged out our attic..Totally! Didnt want to leave it for our children when we were too old to do it. Felt good to make a clean sweep. Yes the sentimental items are tuff to let go of but taking a pic is a great idea. We had bags full of beanie babies too!...uggh! (What the hell were we thinking?!) Something very satisfying about getting organized, uncluttered both mentally and physically
Awesome episode. I am letting go of old pre-love stuff without telling anyone because it's a huge deal and I love that no one knows my big moves so nobody will distract me from my minimalist life. Thank you.
I thought so too when I heard about it. It really works! Makes it so much easier to part ways with things without feeling like they are gone forever. I did it for a lot of t-shirts and cards I'd been holding onto.
I loved that tip too. I've found I'm much happier when I'm not surrounded by lots of 'things' in the house, but I make a photo album documenting every year and find that documenting those memories in photo form is all I need to reminisce on things. :)
My girlfriend and I just went through all of our clothes. Can’t believe how much stuff we set aside that we didn’t wear! We’re bringing the piles that we separated out to Good Will. Awesome story Erika!
try to find a local shelter to give them to first Goodwill makes too much profit from free stuff I know they give jobs to people in the stores but they pay them min wage
I know this is feeling. Now in my 30s cleaning up and saw so much clothes I bought through out my 20s that still has tags on them. Bought them just because they are on sales. In fact, I have more with tags on then those that I worn. I don't need 30 T-shirts, or 20 pair of jeans 🤷. Feel so wasted with all that $$$ thrown away. Now feel a bit releive with giving those clothes away someone who needed them more.
With Ebay you can pretty much replace any old item if you ever regret getting rid of it. I had an old Mentos/the Freshmaker t-shirt from the 90's that for some reason I really liked.. I got rid of it and for 20 years it kinda bothered me.. well a few months ago I bought one on Ebay for $20 in mint condition(pun intended).. now I'm just embarassed to wear it :) Ebay is like your closet you store all your unnecessary crap in ........
An old man once told me "The more you have, the more you have to worry about" Eventually your possessions will own you. I now live with less things and it feels great!
Possessions are really just burdens. The fewer possessions, the fewer burdens one has to lug around. Luckily my first iPod from 2003 doesn’t weigh too much lol.
Man, the struggle is real for us folks that like to “archive” things. It’s an amazing feeling when you see that old t-shirt or item from your past life, but what a toll it takes to keep it around.
I became a minimalist without knowing it. All started when I discovered the FIRE movement, then I got into entrepreneurship, which eventually led me to recently starting my UA-cam channel. Your video resonates with me because I realized that in order for me to become a new person with my new goals of who I wanted to become, I had to purge all my old stuff. Besides it took up a lot of space and now my house looks aesthetically “better.” Another great video Erika, keep crushing it! ✌🏼
Wow - thanks for talking about the emotional reaction aswell. It made me realise I have the same thing because someone told me to never open McDonalds toys as a kid because I should save them because they'd be "worth some money" - someday. As a result I nevertheless did open and play with my toys and also felt horrible about it. Likewise the taking pictures of gifts and birthday cards means I get to enjoy having received them - the thought that counts - without resenting the emotional turmoil of their taking up space and still being "required" to be kept.
Erika, I have been watching for a long time now. You are an awesome person whose personality and beliefs are so interesting. You are the most consistent, talented youtuber. Keep it up!! Keep helping others through what you love doing! Best of luck with the business and the channel. Glad you feel much more comfortable now.
i have a closet of clothes i never touch...they're all my "going out clothes" but i don't go out much, even prior to the pandemic At least you were thinking of investing at such a young age...haha
Great video Ericka. I moved a lot in my early life and I too feel a connection to "stuff" - I did get rid of about 80 % of that stuff over the last few years but there are still some clothing items that I was keeping "just in case" and now seeing your video has helped me tremendously and I can get on with donating this clothing that I will not use again. Thank you so much for your content :)
I can't remember when I heard it but I have also taken pictures of things to keep the memory and then sold or donated the item. What a great video. Emotional attachment to items is real. It is important to find ways to let go and move on.
When I was young I was angry at myself for jumping from one shitty job to another one... then I moved to the beach and started a carrer in sales... I knew I was not going to fail and I used that as a motivation to not go back. From that point my income and my self esteem grew up every day, little by little. To anyone who reads this, YOU GOT THIS!!! KEEP GRINDING!!!!
Oh, how I wish! Lots to consider and takeaway. I too work in a top tier corporate law firm (for more years than you’ve been alive) and can relate on many levels as to the real culture within; I think I’ve also been somewhat of a ‘natural’ hoarder or at least have an unnatural love of acquiring things. Closets, boxes, shelves, bookcases, cartons, bins, drawers stuffed and overflowing, sheds … I can go on and on but you get the picture I’m sure. I’ve collected more books and magazines, more recipe/cooking/baking books than the Culinary Institute of America can hold and I’ve got a pretty significant collection of records - vinyl LPs, 45s and even 78s!! And let’s not get started on clothes, purses, shoes, etc, etc. Many hasn’t seen light in years. I’d LOVE TO begin but haven’t a clue how or where to start. I need help! 🙃. Thanks for sharing your story!!
@@iloveyounetwork3749 Thanks for the encouragement, it’s not a lack of boxes that’s holding me back (plenty Amazon boxes on hand) but more like inability to let go! It’s going to take (lots of) work I’m beginning to realise, no two ways about it!! Thanks again.
Taking photos of sentimental items is a good idea. I am not a minimalist, but I do like the idea of removing items from your life that don't serve you. Hoarding is a real pain if you ever need to move to a smaller house in the future, so it makes sense to only keep what you need and use.
Love this video, Erika! I definitely have fallen into keeping "just in case" items. I've been working on clearing out and letting go of items, too! I feel like when we let things go, it really creates peace in your mind too!
Man, are there more women like you in this earth? I really hope so because we sure as hell need them right now. My GF has soooo many things in our house that she hasn't used in years. I told her to either donate it or rent out a storage for it, but refuses to because of the sentimental value. I'm more of a less is more/minimalist type of guy and strongly believe hoarding and having too many things leads to a clutter and disorganized life and mind. Very refreshing to both see and hear that you believe in the same philosophy as I do Mrs. Kullberg. Your husband is a very lucky man to have you.
This is something I’ve contemplated doing for quite some time now. With the advent of COVID-19 and the shut downs in the pronouncements of what jobs are essential and which are not deemed essential, I slowly begin selling off many belongings. Since my career as a musician has been gutted, I no longer need so many suits, vintage neckties and footwear. I suspect that the idea of hoarding various items is perhaps part if being human; it’s a hard thing to deal with at least here in the west. For me it’s not even about the money but about the cathartic feeling of lightening the load. I’ve decided to keep A minimal basic wardrobe of dress clothing, is there is still the occasional need to be nicely dressed in public. Great channel by the way, and there’s always some good food for thought with every video!
Ericka, you are very brave and extremely intelligent...that goes without saying... Thank you for dropping your knowledge on us, it's extremely helpful to see how you live your life.🤗💛👍
good idea. I am a hoarder too. Taking a picture makes it easy to get rid of the items. I am no way as creative as you, but i also quit my decent job when i was around 30, and made passive income from real estate. i did it the hard way, because it was before we had internet. i did not even have a telephone or refrigerator as a kid. Nowadays having millions is a common thing. Your videos are great.
I want to start a youtube and get a passive income, but I'm starting my first corporate job. Truth to be told, it's the plan B. But I also am someone who doesn't have that much energy, so I get really easily stressed out and get headaches. So any risk makes me even more scared.
That shirt that was worn to the orchestra may be as coveted as your diploma is to you. That may seem silly, but some things (shirts) and activities (orchestra) can have a lasting impact. The shirt can be a reminder of the first time her little children showed true awe. Forgetting that moment can be easily done, bit easily remembered when that shirt is seen.
My wife and I had Landlord business going on 7 houses back in 2008, then the great recession wiped it all out. And you are right, it is hard to let go. So hard to recover from business failure. You keep telling yourself "Never Again", but deep down small business is they only way to get out of their system. Thought about being a handyman, cause people don't have time for projects.
I have beanie babies but my grandma bought them for me for the same reason you have them. Now that my grandma died I can't seem to let go of them. I did recently go through them and got rid of duplicates. I feel like that is progress for now and I will try again later. But I am moving and I got rid of a lot of things so I am proud. I think the pictures is a good idea!
Erika great message, and your story is truly inspirational! Thanks for the great video, felt great when I started doing this a few months ago. Your balance of mind and spirit helps many different kinds of people! Me included, so thanks 🙏!
I'm a hapa haole/ hapa japa army brat too. Many of my friends are hapas. They're the only people I can really relate to. Best of luck to you on your business. Ganbatte.
Failure is not an option for you it won't happen you are well on your way and if something did ever happen you have socked away enough money to hold you over until the next venture comes along. You can always wear the clothes on the channel to get some use out of them if you want we won't mind. Always a pleasure watching you more good info. Thanks
It is hard to let go of things but I always feel good when I get rid of things. Memory items are the hardest, I still have a bunch of Disney stuff that I keep but I need to get rid of them. Like you say even if I throw them away it will not get rid of the memory.
Hello Erika, I understand where you are coming from by letting go of things. I am facing somewhat similar situation. I have many people tell me that I would fail for the choice I am making for my life. Besides how would I know I would fail if I don't have the courage to try at all? I am leaving America for good moving to Israel for better life to pursue my religious liberty.
I've seen people create other things out of old concert/event/tourist t-shirts, such as a wall hanging or one side of a handmade "blanket" or something. I cut the photos out of my favorite tees and will make something...hopefully. Haha! 😉👍 (And I used the scraps for rags.)
@@Erika2 Btw, I really admire the way you were able to build multiple streams of income. Thus far, I have only been able to build two. It takes a lot of time and effort. Congrats.
I share your thoughts with the traveling and not having childhood friends to grow up with. But I had a different reaction, I didn't gain attachments to many things and people. Every time we moved, we had a moving clean out and garage sale. So I got used to saying good bye to people and parting ways with stuff. As I grew up, I did find myself buying and hoarding stuff. Didn't notice though, my wife did. Maybe what you mentioned here was the reason. Also reason number..... whatever the number is to follow and learn more from you. Keep being awesome 👌🏾 P.S. I had friends that were nuts about beanie babies, but not me. I do still have all of my pogs if you remember those.
I think the previous generations have different life experiences from those born this century. Those who have lived through the war or a long recession will tend to have back up items stored away just in case.
I'm not scared of failure, but plan B does creep in a lot of times. I'm not a firm believer of plan A, but I do wonder if I'm manifesting plan B some times.
Hi Erika!! You make good points, you are not alone I'm also a holder too,I have Jordan/Westbrook shoes I haven't in 4 years in til I finally wear them, and got lots of dress shirts too,I can't give up but last weekend or so I got rid of some clothes I don't wear much anymore.
How dœs someone feel when everyone else is getting the same heart? There's something genuine about you, hence I'd suggest you strive to make everyone feel special by not giving everyone your heart
Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.
Wow, well said.

They had more longevity in multiple areas of their life compared to millennials imo

Just found your channel! Have already watched 5 videos. Thank you for the genuine advice and sharing of your own experience!
Thank you for dropping your knowledge on us, it's extremely helpful to see how you live your life.🤗💛👍
Thank you!!! Hope you have an awesome weekend.
@@Erika2 U 2 Ericka 🤗🌞
Just keep working on it. ✌
@@joeshmoe9978 thank you Joe, I will 😁
That shirt that was worn to the orchestra may be as coveted as your diploma is to you. That may seem silly, but some things (shirts) and activities (orchestra) can have a lasting impact. The shirt can be a reminder of the first time her little children showed true awe. Forgetting that moment can be easily done, bit easily remembered when that shirt is seen.
Don't worry Erika I'll never stop watching your utube videos!
Indeed. It's not things and money that add value to one's life, it's relationships and memories. David.
Love your story and didn’t know you were a boxer ahahaha that’s rad 🥊🥊
I'm new in this channel and I like it alot.. I like the content it inspires me to be positive and motivate me alot.
Hi Erika. You are so right. I’m a big book nerd but to free up space, instead of buying actual books, I buy the ebook version instead. 🤓 📚
I'm definitely not a hoarder. I hate clutter. I think it's good to donate them. Especially if they are not broken and still in decent shape.
Love the growing up stories.
Thank you!!!!!! I needed to hear this!!!!!!
Thank you!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Good for you for clearing things out! I am doing the same thing this summer.
I have used the same old furnishings and clothes for the last 10 years or so. Gonna throw everything out when I get my new home.
During a day of mostly red candles, this was a nice diversion…thank you!
I’m new to following you. I am loving your videos. As a realtor for investors, I witness first hand how people struggle to let go of stuff.
Ganbatte.
Arigato!!
Failure is not an option for you it won't happen you are well on your way and if something did ever happen you have socked away enough money to hold you over until the next venture comes along.
You can always wear the clothes on the channel to get some use out of them if you want we won't mind.
Always a pleasure watching you more good info.
Thanks
Oh... my... beanie babies... talk about a nostalgia trip. Sidenote... I am at this point in my life. Time to let go.
I don’t know what it is but I love the way you say “beanie babies”.....😂
Great job Erika😎
It's an interesting point of view, you make your life easier!
Good for you, Erika👍
Never forget to trust yourself even if others don’t trust you 🤝
It is hard to let go of things but I always feel good when I get rid of things. Memory items are the hardest, I still have a bunch of Disney stuff that I keep but I need to get rid of them. Like you say even if I throw them away it will not get rid of the memory.
Great video Erika! Very inspiring and motivating to hear!
@@majlis2238 Yep 👍 all delicious Kosher food...
I've seen people create other things out of old concert/event/tourist t-shirts, such as a wall hanging or one side of a handmade "blanket" or something. I cut the photos out of my favorite tees and will make something...hopefully. Haha! 😉👍
(And I used the scraps for rags.)
Great message.
I agree about "Just in case" problem. I had the same problem; thinking I would go back if I failed in my startup.
Wishing you lots of success!
@@Erika2 Btw, I really admire the way you were able to build multiple streams of income. Thus far, I have only been able to build two. It takes a lot of time and effort. Congrats.
貴方はとても賢い方ですね。羨ましい。
I share your thoughts with the traveling and not having childhood friends to grow up with. But I had a different reaction, I didn't gain attachments to many things and people. Every time we moved, we had a moving clean out and garage sale. So I got used to saying good bye to people and parting ways with stuff. As I grew up, I did find myself buying and hoarding stuff. Didn't notice though, my wife did. Maybe what you mentioned here was the reason. Also reason number..... whatever the number is to follow and learn more from you. Keep being awesome 👌🏾
P.S. I had friends that were nuts about beanie babies, but not me. I do still have all of my pogs if you remember those.
You are inspirational.
Thank you, Erika, for all you do.
I usually do 6 month cleaning of what I need. I can not get rid of my childhood stuffed animals. But they do bring me joy
Having things aren't an issue if you always know you already possess everything
I think the previous generations have different life experiences from those born this century. Those who have lived through the war or a long recession will tend to have back up items stored away just in case.
You're truly what I seek in a woman ! Financial literacy, frugality, entrepreneurial mind set and a risk taker ! and beauty as a cherry on top ! :)
The most inspirational video i have watched in recent times
I'm not scared of failure, but plan B does creep in a lot of times. I'm not a firm believer of plan A, but I do wonder if I'm manifesting plan B some times.
So inspirational
Awesome video! Thanks Erika.
thanks for sharing, this was quite inspirational
This reminds me a bit of the book ‘Goodbye Things,’ but not quite as extreme!
Lol! I saved one suit for the big day. Correction: saved 3 suits. 2 others are for the beach/pool 😎
I used to collect beanie babies too when I was a kid! What a funny time!
Thank you for your videos!!! You are grate!!
