  • Mark and I went down to the Shawnee National Forest this November to drive around and hammock camp in the Garden of the Gods Wilderness, and the Panther Den Wilderness. We also stopped to complete the Rim Rock National Recreational Trail as well. The weather was in the mid 50's, and mid 30's overnight. This was our way to get out and about while still socially distancing from the crowds.

Out of curiosity, how long does it take to get to your first camping spot? If someone wanted to do a multiday camp could a big wheeled wagon be used to bring a bit more supplies? Love the video thank you for making it.

Unfortunately you cannot bring a wagon into the Garden of the Gods Wilderness. That first site is in one of the seven designated protected wilderness areas of the national forest and you cannot bring any kind of vehicle, motorized or non-motorized, into the wilderness areas. I would recommend backpacking your gear in. It's not a long hike, takes maybe 20 minutes to get there from the car. The whole Indian Point loop is only about 1.5 miles. Even if you were allowed to bring a wagon, it would be pretty difficult to get over ledges and fallen trees.

Man, you couldn't have ordered better weather! I had to laugh when you guys were scouting out other spots at Indian Point after you setup. The one spot you were at prior heading back to your camp is where I had setup a few years back. Was absolutely phenomenal! Just have to watch for trash bandits... Those bluffs are really fun to explore, you picked a much better time to do that than I did (90 degree temps). Rim Rock is fun, but all the climbing & exploring that can be done at Panther Den is stupendous! Looks like you guys had a lot of fun! Glad you had a chance to make it down.

The weather was outstanding for November. I was mentally prepared to bring full winter gear and we camped in what was basically just chilly fall weather. Had a blast climbing around and exploring. Only happens a few times a year for me so have to make it count. Happy holidays to you and yours!!

Awesome video. Shawnee is amazingly beautiful, and my favorite place in Illinois. Garden of the Gods is one of my favorite places in the Shawnee. Subbed.

Glad you enjoyed it! I love the shawnee, certainly among my favorites as well. I make it a point to visit a few times a year.

Same here. I live roughly 4 hours away, so unfortunately I can't visit every weekend, so I try to visit a few times every year.

What is a good backpacking itinerary for a weekend with total mileage around 12-13 miles? Was thinking “Backdoor Loop” but it’s not clear to me which trails have the iconic sites.
Kinda looks like exploring Indian Point Trail is more of a 1 mile hike than a “trip”. I thought I might add it into our itinerary as a must do.

Hey man, check out this link. There are a few hikes outlined on this page. If you download the Avenza app you can buy these maps and get the GPS coordinates offline while you're on the trail. www.rivertorivertrail.net/home/other-snf-info/shawnee-nf-multi-day-hikes/

I’m planning a trip there next month, out of curiosity, are the camping sites designated? Pay for camping? Doesn’t show a lot online. I appreciate any input. Thanks

Check out this link. There are 7 wilderness areas in the Shawnee National Forest. You can set up camp anywhere in any of them for free, as long as you don't enter into a designated recreation area. For example, the Garden of the Gods wilderness (where we camped the first night of this video) also has the Garden of the Gods Recreation area (where Camel Rock is located, the area we were hiking at in the very beginning of the vid). I recommend familiarizing yourself with the wilderness areas. There are some maps online that show where they are. The avenza app is also super helpful to have.

There are also some good hikes and downloadable maps if you are looking for backpacking trails and multi-night camping (or just out and back for a night).

Are you still rocking the Eno setup?

In this video, yes lol. It gets the job done. But I have yet to use my dutchware gear hammock on the trail. Currently studying for a big exam, so camping plans are on hold until afterwards and I'll finally get to use it soon!

The rock worms didn't give us too much trouble this time out. Fair deal of wolf spiders in the caves tho, i know those are your favorite 😂
