  • Richie Havens dropped by our Toronto cult TV series "The All-Night Show with Chuck the Security Guard" back in the summer of 1981. To our delight (and despite our technical limitations), he'd come to play...

I grew up around Richie. Same block, sung in the choir with my brother and sisters. was always sitting around my grandma. For years he was there. Then I went to Vietnam and he became the soundtrack of our life......lengend .

You knew Richie Havens? Wow. I was just saying how he seems like such a genuine sort. He must have been a great guy.
I'm pretty good friends with the son of the original sax player in Electric Flag. Lol. That's a person who I know. Lol.
Welcome home. I hope it's not out of line for me to say that. I know it's for y'all to welcome each other back. I never served. But it came from a good place.

Richie was as unique a human being as he was a guitar player. I was so lucky 2 see him play live a few yrs before his passing. He came 2 perform in wilkes barre Pennsylvania on public Square. He loved people n b4 the show he walked around and enjoyed the fine arts festival going on. He talked with many people and everyone loved it. He was scheduled to play like an hr but actually performed 4 us for 2and a half hrs . He was so amazing and his vocals made me cry numerous times. It was so powerful and real. He again walked thru the crowd after the show and I watched him sign autographs and talk with us answering questions etc. We hung on every word. He is greatly missed. RIP Mr Havens. A true and real legend of our time . ❤❤❤

I was friends with Richie way back in the early Village days. Watching this video reminds me of when we were hanging around at the "Scoop", an ice cream shop downstairs from a jazz joint, and he was experimenting with his open cord playing. We were both so young! It was a great joy to see how developed he became, so successful. He was a wonderful person. We were all so lucky...... I was so lucky to have known him❤❤❤

James Taylor is my favourite musician. One might expect me not to like this very unusual cover. But it’s excellent.
It’s also rather liberating to be reminded that the challenge is not to follow the rulebook but to make a great sound. Mr Havens pulled that off in style.

He open tunes his guitar because he didn't know how to play chords. Using mostly his thumb and simply moving up and down the frets, Richie Havens made some of the most beautiful, purest music ever played. What a wonderful gift he gave us all.

Yes sir, I was aware of his reason to open tune; however, Jimi Hendrix had big hands as well as BB king. They had no problem pressing one string at a time. I've seen them ALL in person as well as other guitar players with "big hands" who mastered chords.

I can understand what you're saying. I think it's because he is a true musician, he gives what he has to give without any pretense. Very pure and powerfull.

It's always about performance and the ability to get the attention of the listener. He had a true gift. With the power in his vocals an unorthodox style u were captured by his huge heart and real beautiful soul so evident in the emotion he could project right into ur whole body. I've never been so captured.

I saw Richie in concert back in 1972, I think it was. Haven't listened to him much in years...till I found this track. Wow!! Blew me away!

It was around that time Richie played a concert at the old Massey Hall, or somewhere like that in Toronto, right? It was a magical concert. The whole place was caught in the spiritual net he wove for us that night. Bless Richie Havens for blessing us all with his art.

amazing work, beautiful soul, such a great unorthodox style of playing that was RICHIE HAVENS. My first audio experience was his woodstock performance off my father's LP, the driving rhythym of his guitar and the pure feeling in his vocal still makes my hair stand on end every time i give it a listen to, thanks for sharing this fantastic rendition MICHAEL.

What a talented, unique artist Richie Havens was. Thank you for this video. I was going into grade 8 at Valley Park JH in September and listening to a lot of Zeppelin and Maiden and Purple but on the strength of the Woodstock concert I would have loved to see him. I wonder what venue he played at when he was in town. Anyway, just thinking out loud. Thanks again.
