- Greatest Civil Rights Song Ever - Modern Soul Dancer Too!
RIP Mr Havens. Born: January 21, 1941, Brooklyn. Died: April 22, 2013. Also vistit www.mickeynold.blogsot.co.uk for more interesting songs.
This song was a game changer for me. Thank you sir ❤✌️
No problem ;-)
i was blessed to be born into the Havens family!!!!! my uncle was a great person and he is truly missed by my family but that beautiful soul is back with the creator so im at peace with that!!!!
kawon havens I am so blessed to have listened to your uncle's music and I have passed this legacy to my two great sons Liam and Adam,
a proud mother Noreen, great Irish Republican who has lived in the United Kingdom since 9 years old in 1967
kawon havens My uncle, well known Irish singer Christy Moore sang this is the 80's with a band called Moving Hearts.....what an incredible person your uncle was....funny that two posts are from Ireland...he had a lot of fans in Ireland...love to the family
Davog Rynne Moving Hearts, brilliant band, The Storm is a classic album
kawon havens It's a crime that not all of your uncle's work has been put on CD and given the treatment his art deserves. Richie was amazing and his music will live forever.
+kawon havens Your uncle touched many of us along the way with his music. The creator himself was touched by his music
I came here because Mark Devlin mentioned Richie Havens and this song “What About Me” in relation to what’s going on during this scamdemic!!!!
The words in this song ring truer now than they ever have done!!!!
Great song!!!!
Truly moving!!!!
Same here. Agreed great song.
Same.
This song was years ahead of it's time.
Going back to my roots is one of my favourite songs ever.
This was one very talented enlightened soul R. I. P.
Other awake artists worth checking out are the late great Gil Scott-Heron and Terry Callier.
Me too!♥️
Same here
4,000 people dying from that scam every day. That's quite a scam, along with the stolen election, I presume?
Idiot.
This echoes the stance of Fred Hampton and James Baldwin and Brother Malcolm......what powerful lyrics ringing down the years.
I love this man. He is a true visionary. So happy he lived among us for a while.
Supreme
Kawon.I knew your Uncle, in the Village,in the 60's, and can say he was a kind soul, who radiated goodness, so you were indeed blessed to have such a kind, and old soul, for an Uncle.
Oh how We need Mr. Havens Today....
Aw, Richie's gone. The most spiritual artist I've ever heard and in the 60's he was one of ours. Freedom couldn't really lose with Richie on our side. We're fortunate that he passed through here for a while and left us such beautiful music as this. He may be gone but his spirit will live forever.
Its October 2023 and What you gonna do about me? is still relevant. Just saying...
i saw Richie in southern Florida in 1972. We were so enthralled with him, we followed him to Troy NY and then to MIT in Boston where I got to meet him. His staff allowed me to walk right past them and i ended up in a room where he was doing an interview with a local reporter. She asked him" is it true that sometimes recordings made of your interviews disappear?" He just laughed! Not only was his singing a talent that we don't have a word to express.... he was also spiritually the highest person i was ever with. he told me he had an astrology school in NY and that if I wanted to attend, I could stay with his family. i had never met him before and was really tempted.... I asked what to do with my out of control 2 yo taurus son, and he told me when i needed his attention and favor, conjure up my sweetest voice and put my arm around him. That changed my whole family's lives...
His soul always shines through his music...what a great artist.
God what an incredible track
This man is genius.
Richie Havens compliments a song writer when he chose to do their song! His ability to reach into the very depths of a thing and interpret its meaning is phenomenal!
Cover, that's right. When sung by a Havens it take the song to another place.
Quicksilver Messenger Service!
This Song Rings as True Today as it did back then.
What a great Flow and Message.
Beautiful.
Thank you Miss. Ann we will never forget you ❤️!! I'm here because of my daughter's music teacher! #msann #music
Very relevant today! Thanks @Mark Devlin
what about me? sounds like it was written today loved richie!!
Greatest protest (ish) recording ever! It's an American anthem! I found this song getting dusty in a friend's crate, and it's been spinning regularly since that time. Thank you, Mr. Havens.
My favourite version of a fabulous song. Never understood why it isn't more well known. As relevant as ever 50 years on.
LEGEND!!
Years ago I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Havens at at restaurant in Mount Vernon NY called The Bayou. As he was starting to play this very song, he looked at me and asked if I would like to sing this with him. I was truly honored and we went right into Handsome Johnny. After the show, Mr. Havens came over to bar and asked if I would dine with him. I jumped at the chance and had the best time of my life hearing his stories of the road he traveled. There will ever be another. God bless...💚🤍❤️
Thanks for sharing your fond memories, what a joy :-)
This song was written by Dino Valenti of Quicksilver Messenger Service. Great version by them too
What an incredible piece of music. Late to the game to this guy but absolutely incredible. What a voice, lyrics and beautiful sentiment. Perfect, perfect, perfect!
I met Richie several times over 30 years and he always made me feel like an old friend (tho I'm sure he didn't remember me). The true embodiment of Peace and Love. a "Beautiful Cat".
I love this song
Wonderful song. Saw him live, brilliant.
This is quite possibly my favorite song cover of all time. Just sublime and perfect. As absolutely amazing as the original Quicksilver version is, I think Richie might outdo it.
Your uncle Richie Havens was a kind and gifted soul who shared with us his creative insight expressed in music form. He lives on in our memories.
'I can feel the future tremble as the world is passed around'
Mr Harman *word
Richie Havens is one of those artists I've discovered 50 years after everyone else. He takes songs to another level from the way they were originally recorded. Superb
Not enough time to listen to them all :-)
@@mickeynold7849 ain't that just the truth
Such a great song should be known by this generation. I'd love to hear John Legend cover it. His voice has that quality needed to convey the song's powerful message.
what is this? Is Richie havens less than John Who[cocktail singer for the masses]
the world has lost another beautiful person
I have an original album and some how the album has been lost, I can not find it on media at all
I don't know why, either. It's a great album, but not available on Spotify or as a CD.
Happy Happy 80th Birthday Richie Havens! You were amazing! A terrific writer and singer. Your words spoke to the mind and soul. God Bless You!
I remember seeing Brother Richie P.Havens,at the Cafe What,in Greenwich Village many, many, times the entertainers would "pass the basket", I love those joyful Happenings,Richie, was always at his Soulful Best,B4,Woodstock, he was our Star.....RIP,Beloved.......
stephan omarr You were so fortunate to see him at the beginning. His first album is one of my favorites. “Noah’s Dove.”
Still as relevant today December 2019🇵🇸♥️
Still relevant today january 2021
I have no idea why I'm just now getting into this man, but better late than never. I usually don't hold this stance with the grand majority of these cases, but this cover beats the original for me.
I have been a big Richie Havens and Quicksilver fan since my teen years. I am in my 40s now. I have the Quicksilver album that contains this song, but I had not heard this tune until my lunch break today on Sirius Radio Deep Tracks. I am so glad this is on You Tube. I just added it it to my Cool Music playlist. Thanks for uploading this deep track, Radio Nold. I can't expect the tired corporate classic rock stations to play gems like this.
+iliv4disc77 Rex, I know you always dig up good music on You Tube. I saw this on your page and decided to give it a listen. The only thing I knew by Richie was the stuff from the Woodstock movie. This is good stuff.
+iliv4disc77 When I was a pirate dj, I played this all the time, like you say a lot of good stuff gets missed, I uploaded it the day after he died as a tribute and was stunned by the response.
Thank you so much for uploading this! As far as know as I know, this song is only available on vinyl on The Great Blind Degree. Vinyl's are cool, but the fact that it's not even purchaseable anywhere on the internet is mind-blowing for such an amazing song.
I actually just found this album not on vinyl, but 8 track. Works so far. This song could use a more accessible release if that's true though. Doesn't he have any greatest hits albums? Has this album not been released on CD or MP3?
Justin White If it was released on CD, it's not anymore, and I didn't see any sites with Mp3.
One my faves of his!
One of the Greatest Folk-Rock-Singers and Guitar Players! I was Bless to witness Brother Richie Havens in Concert approximately 2007 at World Café in Philly-a Dream come True-I was at Woodstock in Doors---Bless His Soul! Brother
Riche Havens was Sweating and Playing the Music out of His Heart and Soul-A Great Performance on the Sacred Spot and in the Magnificent Moment---Bless Him for that Gift of Woodstock Music he gave to us for Forever-and he Opened and Started Woodstock Up-the First Artist of the Day for 3-Hours---He got Caught-Up in the Spirit of His Music.
There are so many songs like this that would form a great compilation to a soundtrack for the current Syrian refugee crises.
Woody Guthrie's got at least a dozen.
I was 16 when I 1st heard this went straight out and bought the 8-track.. Heard QSMS 1st.
What a soulful man
Always always have loved this song!
Peace, my brother.
RIP a great singer/song writer
Absolute genius!
I listened to this album during high school. Those were good years. I'm sorry I can't find it in CD. I miss it. Thanks.
Don't think it ever got a release on CD
Sadly it ain't on cd , i can send ya a FLAC if you want to hear the whole The Great Blind Degree , if you post email. peace .
@@railwaystationmaster - You're very kind ... What is a FLAC 👵🏼
And his band is always sweet and surprising and the bass is just crazy.
One of Dino's best songs. Richie Havens appreciated both Dino Valenti and Karen Dalton.
After forty year, vista bounced back into this old heart of mine, amazing memories of Dreamland Margate!
Brilliant song, cover by Ritchie
i gotta say i love his guitar playing & vocals the live gigs are top notch as well he worked with some fine musicians pure talent of the highest order with heart & soul great post..
When I was 5 every afternoon I would put on Richie's Handsome Johnny on the stereo, big squishy headphones and take my nap. LA Woman too sometimes. It was a toss up.
TRUTH BE TOLD, I WAS in the Greenwich village DAYS in cafe Wha ,when Richie havens, was during his Magic, Bob. Dylan, Joan Byas,Very Mason,The travel 2,MY Duo, what a MARVELOUS TIME in the MYSTERY CALL LIFE.....
My first "Trip" in Acid in Rio 71
Interpretação magistral, som atemporal!

A veritable intergenerational commandment 'what cha gonna do about me'?
Anyone knows about The Great Blind Degree book?
There’s a citation from this book in the back of the vinyl of this album
Don't think it came out, not under that title anyway.
Stoner sent me
Soul rebel par excellence
Stoner hat mich hergebracht

One of a handful of examples where a cover version bests the original. Richie 1; Quicksilver Messenger Service 0.
I almost like Richie’s version better than quicksilvers. Lots of soul
.
Classic song by Quicksilver MSERVICE FEAT DINO VALENTI IN VOCAL
This is a different vocal performance from the one on the record. Must be an outtake never used on vinyl/disc.
This version came out on 45.
This is the same version that I had on open reel tape entitled "Alarm Clock". Sadly I do not have it anymore. Seems to had been a one off tape, as it has more than 9 songs on it. It did not appear on the LP version, sadly.
It may have been put out as a 45 or EP for radio station play.
An amazing Richie havens version of the Quicksilver Messenger Service song. Check out the live performance of this song he did in Philly. It will blow you away! Link below:

What is your point????
Quicksilver
This is not a civil rights song, came out later.
