  • This new MacBook Pro (16-inch, M1 Pro, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD) is an amazing machine. Apple traveled back in time to when MacBooks were good, and basically gave us an updated 2015 MacBook Pro - we've got ports (3x USC-B T4, SDXC reader, HDMI, and MagSafe), we've got a superb keyboard, and this display is next level. This laptop cost roughly $2900 after NYC tax. And it's a very capable beast.
Leave a comment if you bought one and your experience with it so far.

I’m glad you bought the baseline model. Makes me feel better about not going all in. I might go 32GB with 1TB but I’ll probably just go baseline 14”. I like my devices as small as possible. Thanks for another fantastic upload!

You don't really need 32GB in the traditional sense. Comparing 16GB on Apple silicon with 16GB on the previous Intel setup is like comparing apples and oranges. The memory speed improvements on this thing just blows the previous Intel generation out of the water. It's finally time for a real jump in evolution for laptops with System on a Chip like the M1. Intel and AMD is on the same train too.

@@gust1x you seem to know a bit about this. Do you think this is always true on apple silicone? I’m contemplating a 14 inch with 32 gigs of Ram. Is that money well spent?
I’m a teacher and data analyst with lots of number crunching. I’m now picking up coding more seriously and assume more Ram is money well spent… but don’t want to overpay If I don’t need to.

@@prkrmc6457 I'm hijacking carl's answer - but i would probably upgrade. My 16' 10-core mbp with 32 gigs should arrive next week, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is.
The reason why I chose that is that I'm planning on keeping this device for a LONG time, aside from having memory-intensive work requirements.
Carl's point is absolutely valid, and unless you have a real requirement for more ram, you're not really doing a bad choice going with 16gb.
But you should think - am I buying this pc for the next 2 years, or am I buying it for the next 5? What will I be doing with that computer in the next 5 years? Will the programs that I use require more memory capacity?
Normally I would buy less storage and ram, and go upgrading as time goes on, because I'm a PC user. But we can't do that on the new macbooks, so you have to put the money upfront and stick with that decision as time goes on.

It’s crazy how Apple managed to get so much wrong with the touch bar editions, the keyboard, the touch bar, the ports, the removal of MagSafe - they could have released this new version without their own silicon and it would have still been a home run. I’ve been holding on to a 2013 MBP just because I hate the touch bar editions so much, but will definitely be upgrading to one of these relatively soon.

I have a touchbar version and I don't know why I actually find them great. I know that you can do all the tasks touchbar can do via keyboard shortcuts but when I'm watching a video or using Apple Music, the touchbar helps me to skip song to my desired time stamp or whenever the laptop freezes, touchbar helps me to switch tabs on Safari.

    • @j3y445
      @j3y445 2 роки тому

@@rajatbisht21 the hate for the touchbar stems from the fact that you have to look in order to use it accurately. Function keys especially. This is especially bad because all good typists learn to never look at the keyboard while typing, so a feature that contradicts something that people have been doing for years, is bound to receive hate. Personally, I need the function row keys way more than the one or two niche cases where the touchbar is nice. Its a nice to have, but maybe apple just needs to not sacrifice the damn function row keys. Keep the function keys, and move the touch bar above. There is more than enough space there.

Well truth be told, you can edit 4K footage just fine on the iPad Pro with the A12x chip. It may not beat some other setups with render times, but it will get the job done. As of late I’ve been using the 24” iMac with the M1 chip and it also does quite well.

I bought the highest end Macbook Pro every year from 2015 onward and every year I was disappointed. From the i9 with Vega graphics to the last intel model with a 5600M and HBM2 I always felt like I need more. I even bought a eGPU box and stuck a RX5700XT in it. But when the M1 came out last year I bought a Mac Mini M1 to test the waters. I was pleasantly surprised. It was beating my i9 5600M 16 inch macbook pro unless I used my eGPU for video editing. So when the new M1 Pro/Max Macbooks came out I was once again skeptical. But in my first test with an M1 Max Macbook Pro my 2019 16 inch was destroyed in video editing even with a eGPU & rx5700xt. So I'm excited to see what kind of desktops Apple can bring to market this year with this amazing ARM architecture.

The scary thing about these macbook pros is that alot of the software is not even properly optimized for the macs yet- even if some says they are *cough*adobe premier* cough.
Like seriously, even with the newest "optimized for m1" adobe premier, the performance difference in real time editing and exporting compared to like say Final Cut or Davinci resolve is like and day. New and harder codecs like my fujifilm x-t4 h265 video files or my canon r5 hq 4k and 8k footage still struggle to preview properly on premier on these macs... but on final cut/davinci it didnt skip a beat. Cant wait until things are better optimized- these macs will be even better.

Most laptop makers (including Apple) got into their minds that consumers just wanted lighter, smaller, and lighter devices (laptops). As a result, they began to shrink them by eliminating ports and so on. I think that the public can carry a few extra ounces if the laptop has everything they need. I personally think that sizes 14, 15, 16, and 17 inches in screen size is the way to go in years to go. The 13 inch screen size is just too small and at the expense of many of the ports we need.

There are a lot of good things about these MacBook Pros… however, there are three things that no one really seems to talk about. Firstly the USB-C speeds are less than pro. In my tests the read/ write speed from an external USB-C SSD are 30% slower compared to the previous Intel MacBook Pros. In once case it was so slow you couldn’t use it to edit 4K footage from an external SSD drive. Secondly the colour accuracy, just like on the latest iPhone Pros, is way to yellow to be usable out of the box. After a lot of tweaking I managed to get it to be sort of ok. None of the colour calibrations I have seem to work properly at this stage.Third the internal SSD reader is disappointing slow compared to using an external reader. Even using an external reader via the USB-C ports is faster. Really Apple?
The battery life is mind blowingly good and CPU speed to great. The “extra ports” not really extra ports if you use an external monitor via thunderbolt. On my Intel Mac I had 4 ports now I have three one of which is used by the monitor. So I am actually short changed by one port.
As for the case design it does feel like an afterthought. The last intel Mac MacBook Pro look professional this one does not.
All in all this feels like a MacBook Pro Generation update Apple every 6 or so years. The first version is ok but the second or third version will make you wish you waited a little longer before you upgraded.

I like you. I like your videos. But you're reminding me of Rip Van Winkle here ... It's like you went to sleep for the entire line of Touch Bar MacBooks simply because you didn't like the Touch Bar (which WAS pretty superfluous and vaguely reminiscent of the ill-conceived Barnes and Noble Nook devices) and now that it's gone you decided to wake up ... and you're surprised the performance is great! The reality is, the Touch Bar MacBooks performed pretty damn well too. The last generation of Touch Bars with 8-core Intel i9 processors, 64GB of RAM absolutely smoked. I would crush RED footage for clients all the time - never had an actual desktop computer because the Touch Bar MacBooks performed so well. They also had fantastic speakers. Is the M1 line an upgrade? Hell yeah it is, especially in the battery life. But it's also thicker and heavier, the form factor of the Touch Bar Mac Books is nice.

It's got way more power than the 8th Gen i5 6 core, the graphics rival the desktop Navi card, the Webcam/ mic/ speaker quality blew me away, and the rig is completely portable and quiet.

I was honestly a bit sad I couldn't go to M1. I bought a secondhand 2019 for pretty cheap since I still need x86 for virtual machines and bootcamp. Hopefully in a few years time either the chips are fast enough to power through windows and Linux x64 arm emulation or my workflow no longer needs them.
I think things like this you really need to consider, particularly if you need access to Windows apps (solidworks, games, etc) at least with these initial devices. I also think if you're a student or may be required to use specific applications or workflows, arm probably isn't the move just yet.

    • @samsheffer

i think most people dont even know what x86 is to be honest
the majority of people buying this laptop will not consider that, but i appreciate the comment

@@samsheffer Oh absolutely, for a creative or productivity use case, it's basically nothing but an advantage, particularly the efficiency.
Its more in technical fields and particularly at university where your submissions have to be for like a target x86 Linux image. It's not that I doubt they can perform adequately, more that you dont want to chance a submission on whether the interpreter is working correctly. That's also true if you're doing technical work for a client. For personal work, these machines would already be incredible.
I'd love to test it, but I'm a student so not going to drop a couple stacks for that 😅 really everything will be moving to arm/RISC in the coming years, so it's a mute point. Just wanted to offer a different viewpoint, as obviously most videos are from creative professionals like yourself.

@@samsheffer FYI, bootcamp is straightforwardly not an option here. Windows can work in virtualisation, but only ARM64 windows, and at the moment the only way to do that is quasi-illegally by installing it from windows insider. MS still do not license ARM windows for anything but their own hardware, even though it running so fast virtually on M1 (not even Pro/Max) is surely embarrassing to them. You'd still have any issues you'd have with it being the ARM64 version of windows, with its own x86/64 emulation. So if OP really really needs x64 windows, he's probably made the right choice for now. And I'm so glad I don't need that too as I ALL-CAPS-LOVE my new MacBook Pro too 😀

    • @supersnail5000
      @supersnail5000 2 роки тому

@@StrangerNoises haha, Arm windows truly is a mess at the moment. Microsoft has a soon to expire exclusivity agreement with Snapdragon which I imagine has prevented this. Obviously having no competition in the market with unimpressive processors isnt going to drive innovation. Possibly now if Samsung and mediatek make competitively priced, performant laptops, they may eat into the Chromebook market.
I actually think what's more likely is x86 implementing more of the power optimisation strategies of arm, like Alderlakes BIGlittle cores and improved voltage regulators on raptorlake, will extend the lifespan of x86 in the windows space for a while longer. After that, hopefully we can all happily move over to RISC5 Linux.

I also edit with h264 and man it's great, however I haven't figured out why hardware encoding is disabled when exporting h264? Is it because it only decodes? Any solution to this?

I just got the 14” mid tier option. This is the best computer I’ve ever had, especially now that many programs are being optimized for Apple silicon. I don’t do content creations but I do a lot of business with pdf’s and web apps. Both Adobe pro and chrome are super snappy. I’ve mostly been an Apple user over the years but have held off upgrading over the years. This is the one to upgrade to.

I am waiting for the new bigger Imac because of the promotion and mini-led tech and wanted to ask you this: you as a macbook owner who already has this tech would you say it is worth the wait or should I go for the 24 inch Imac (i am not a pro user so the other elements such as performance etc are not of added value for me)?

hi chloe - i’d say that yes, actually, those touchbar macbooks were definitely worse products than these current new macbooks.

@@samsheffer No doubt - but every single Apple video ever starts with "this years xxxxx is the best ever". My point isn't that the current model *isn't* the best ever - it is. My point is no companies are out there trying to make worse products each year, so this is kind of a nothing statement. No one expects the iPhone 14 to be the slowest iPhone ever - Apple's not going to stick a 286 in it, yet sure as the sun rises each day, when it comes out, every article and video is going to say "this year's is the fastest chip in an iPhone, ever."
