I like how even though this review is only 10 minutes long, you pretty much covered all of the bases, unlike other reviewers who griped on the graphic style for too long. Admittedly, I did shell out the $60 on this game if only because I loved Link's Awakening that much and wanted to see a remake of other titles done in that style, and because it came with cute lil' pins.
To be fair with the pricing, the original Link's Awakening's price on release (Adjusted for inflation) is $57 so if you were willing you get it before, this is a much better version. I also don't agree with basing a game's value on its length- some games are 10-20 hour adventures, others are RPG's that can last you hundreds of hours, but what matters is quality. Link's Awakening remake is a great game no matter how much you're willing to pay for it. Though I will admit I've been pouring all my time into DragonQuest 11 on the switch and thats a game where you get not only quality for your dollar, but if time-per-dollar matters to you, DQ11 is a winner.
The framerate is fine. Only briefly jumping to 30fps is far more fluent than constantly going to 40-50fps or having a locked 30. In fact, I probably wouldn't have bought the game if it locked at 30. Also: in my opinion, it's definitely worth the price for those who have yet to play Link's Awakening as it's basically a new experience then
Looks like a solid remake. You do make an interesting point about the price. I didn't think $60 was bad, but I also hadn't considered the high quality Crash and Spyro remakes that were multiple games in one.

i think i might have missed the whole photograph sidequest back when i first played Link's awakening when i was a kid. Granted i wasnt a completionist back then too, so young me probably just ran to dungeons and did as much as he could and call it a day.
As someone that hasn’t played the original yet, playing the remake was just… fantastic. I loved the world, items, characters, art style, and sound design. For my money, Link’s Awakening’s remake was a little slice of heaven and I love it to bits. I do agree that selling it for $60 was a bit much, and it would have been fine at that price if they also remade the Oracle games in the same way and bundled it as a trilogy. Speaking of which, I really hope they do remake those titles for the Switch just like they did with Link’s Awakening. And then I want a full blown brand new 2D overhead Zelda title for the system. I think it’s high time we finally got another one.
So I heard in some videos that the FPS issue could be a solvable issue since it seems to be a memory handling problems as in the game seems to have an error with how it loads the game, so it's not so much the amount of enemies but how it handles the loading of information. Apparently, if you play the game with it being installed in the SD instead of using a cartridge, the FPS issue is less frequent.
The way I look at it when i buy games... If I spend £50 on the game, and I play with for at least 5 hours or more, I've 100% had my moneys worth. If I don't hit the 5 hours after spending £50 then I'll feel shitty and annoyed. Imo 60$ for a 8-10 hour game is acceptable, however I can understand why you'd disagree as like Johnny said in the review it's a remake. It shouldn't cost nearly as much as full retail. The Crash Remake(s) got it right with cutting the price to almost half.
I personally loved the music in this game. I think it's a great remix of the original. Especially the ending credits sound. May be my favourite "old school" Zelda soundtrack. Again, as this sort of thing needs to be constantly stressed, that's just my opinion.

But why they should worry? Not a fan of them removing the photos. That sort of thing would have been the perfect thing to play around with and share with friends and people on Twitter.
I’m a huge Zelda fan but never attempted to beat links awakening. I bought the deluxe version when it came out back in 98 but never even made it to the first dungeon. I just hated the gameboy back then. I was really excited when Nintendo announced this remake since I never even tried to beat it. I got to beat this game the way I wanted to. On my tv. I really enjoyed the time. It’s an excellent game. Link to the past and link between worlds are still my favorite Zeldas but this game will definitely be in my yearly rotation to beat.
The comments on the whole remake price point, it really vibes with me on mainly the FFVII "Remake", that is altering the storyline in fundamentally fucked ways that makes the whole story fall apart if you know it, AND it's also not a full game, more like a part 1 of howeverfuckingmany... It's deceptive, and I can imagine MANY newcomers blindly buying it and thinking of it like it's a 1 to 1 Remake for real, when it's a lie to call it that in general. It's not even over the fucking gameplay change, that aspect is fine enough, but when the story itself is being fundamentally fucked with deeply AND its incomplete, not even telling you its an episode 1 or part 1, just "Final Fantasy VII Remake"... What the fuck is someone gonna take that as?.. It's just shitty and comes off as a blatantly bad ripoff like FFXV and Dissidia NT both were... And NOW we also have the Demon's Souls remake on PS5 for $70 outright, which is ABSURD especially, since it is a 1:1 remake that incorporates quality of life improvements along with better graphics... But is that really worth being $70? I don't think so...
Big credit to mentioning Walmart. I got it there for 50. Definitely a more fair price for this one. If anyone wants to save a bit more, get a target debit card and price match Walmart so you get 50 with 5 percent off or about 50 flat with tax.
Considering he's only done the Budokai Tenkaichi trilogy and Dragon Power on the NES, I don't think he will unless he does the Xenoverse duology and FighterZ.
I know what I'm gonna do. Question for all: how much was a Gameboy game back in the day? I will get Link's Awakening (Switch) when the price drops down to that.
I have to say i totally agree with you. i bought it on release. I 100% the game in 18 hours its not a 60 dollar game it should have been 40.its a great improvement to be sure but that doesnt help how short it was and how condensed the game is. You also have all the frame rate issues as well which hinder it. I agree with you completely wait for a price drop
Great job, Johnny. I never played the original Link's Awakening before. So I finally got to play it on the Switch & I really enjoy it. I wish the price wasn't $60 concerning they didn't add a whole lot of content or something to make it more fun. But at the same time though, I still enjoy the game. Plus, I sold my Breath of the Wild ( Switch ) and Street Fighter 4 at Gamestop for it & all I have to pay left is $20. Didn't regret it. But regardless, this is an wonderful experience. So now I don't have to worry about getting the Game Boy one. It was an amazing game & it's becoming one of my top 5 favorite Zelda games.
They should’ve added (at the very least) a New Game + where the enemies are harder and you only keep your Sword, Mirror Shield, Blue/Red Tunic, and the bottles. For the $60 price tag, that was a missed opportunity.
Jokes aside, they do have sales once in a blue moon. I remember seeing that Mario rabbids game being knocked down at one point. I thought about getting it.
This comment may be coming a little late as this video is a few weeks old now, but while I respect Johnny's opinion and can understand people's frustration with the price, I implore anyone watching this review to at least check out some other reviews or talk to people before writing the game off as "not worth it" based on price alone. I guess it depends on what you value in games (I personally don't equate game price with length of game but rather how valuable a game experience is, and besides the game is also more like 15-20+ hrs if you take your time or it's your first time; a great game's age is also irrelevant to me if I've never played it), but I think Link's Awakening is absolutely worth full price, especially if you're a Zelda fan and have never played the original versions. It's an incredibly special experience with one of the best and most thoughtful narratives in the series and also one of the most memorable worlds in the series and this remake does a wonderful job of being transformative while capturing the spirit of the original. I also personally feel the framerate issues are vastly overblown; I went into the game being only vaguely aware of the issues and barely noticed any problems, seriously. Just some minor stuttering here and there. But to be fair, I'm someone usually not too bothered by such things unless they're really egregious (I also didn't go looking for issues). Again, with all due respect to Johnny, it's clear that his overall lukewarm feelings on the game make the price seem especially difficult to swallow; as a huge fan of LA since playing the DX version as a kid, it was worth every penny for me and I'd highly recommend it.
Wow, this is literally perfect timing. Just finished this earlier today myself. This remake was my first time experiencing Link’s Awakening, and it was pretty solid if on the short side due to its Game Boy origins. Came relatively close to full completion in the areas that mattered. Only missed two Heart Pieces and ten Secret Seashells (stopped because 40 was enough to get the Koholint Sword). Cleared the first three sets of Dampe’s Chamber Dungeons to get all the rewards there, only did one out of the bonus set purely out of curiosity. [BLEEP] Eagle’s Tower though. Easily my least favorite part of the game.
I completely agree with you about the price Johnny. $60 for a remake of a Gameboy game is a bit much for my taste. I really hate that this the case for the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon remake as well (These games cost around $30 to $40 when they first released).

I still find it funny that even after the Wind Waker art style controversy, that people bashed on Link’s Awakening new style. The only issue most of us have with it was the $60 but hey, this game is amazing regardless
Lucky for Johnny since there is a huge update for CTR today. How is he that lucky man.
Well he may be unlucky since Activision put micro transactions in the game.
@@protoluigi2047 OK, I understand that'll be an issue, but that was before today's update. It will depend about differences if he's with the game or against it (hope he likes it). Besides, Mario Kart Tour got even a worse MTX issue that CTR
@@MrJavmastermetaloq12 Oh yeah I forgot about that, however, CTR Nitro Fueled does look fun, but too busy playing other games.
Whoa... that intro song hit different with headphones on.
The remix of the Zelda main theme at the end is reminding me so much of the one they had in Donkey Konga; great review by the way!
Just the thing I needed coming off a 10 hour shift! A new Johnny vs. video!
I had the worst day today, but I'm glad you uploaded to take my mind off of things, even for a bit. You're always awesome, Johnny!
How has it been 6 years since the original review. I remember being so excited for each video in that marathon.
Let’s hope the Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Ages ReMakes will come too. And be better priced.
YES!!
God damn it Battler/Tom/Zucc without a doubt
Plus there was originally a planned 3rd version but it never got made. So maybe a remake can help with that.
@@sonictj3 I think I can safely say theyre not going to make an entire 3rd game just for a remake, as perfect as that would be.
Perfect timing.
I just got out of an interview for an internship position with my university’s IT department. Hope I land it!
Good luck brotha
I just took job testing yesterday, so good luck to us both!
Good luck bro and I hope you make it
Good luck!
Good luck!
The framerate is fine. Only briefly jumping to 30fps is far more fluent than constantly going to 40-50fps or having a locked 30. In fact, I probably wouldn't have bought the game if it locked at 30. Also: in my opinion, it's definitely worth the price for those who have yet to play Link's Awakening as it's basically a new experience then
Team Sonic Racing: We've got speed.
Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled: We've got speed to.
Fzero GX: Hold my beer.
Three houses Johnny. In fact, all of fire emblem if you have the fortitude.
Looks like a solid remake. You do make an interesting point about the price. I didn't think $60 was bad, but I also hadn't considered the high quality Crash and Spyro remakes that were multiple games in one.
$60 was definitely too much for me, but when I saw that the game was on sale for $45 at Best Buy during Black Friday month, I had to snap it up.
"...wait for it to get cheaper..."
*laughs in Nintendo*
Just got home from work, time to relax with some Johnny.
>that end
damn was actually hoping for a need4speed marathon lol underground 2 for life
I noticed the frame jump throughout the video . I want to get it regardless because it looks gorgeous!
I want them to remake the Oracle games next
Hopefully if they do remake the Oracle games they change up how the Rings system works because yikes that's a pain in the butt. Also hopefully make Seasons better...
Nah man minish cap should get a remake
@@fireair100 Season was easy, it was Ages that was the pain. 2 words: Goron Dance
@@AdoltheFox Ok I'll give you that. What I meant was Seasons having better characters and plot. (Also fun fact: If you do the password thing from Ages to Seasons, you unlock that dance minigame in Seasons)
I will say this. As Iv only just finshed the game for the 1st time and it also being my 1st ever Zelda Title.....I can easily say its the best Zelda for new beginners and because of this and Watching Johnny's Videos this makes me want to try the rest
i think i might have missed the whole photograph sidequest back when i first played Link's awakening when i was a kid.
I like how in the intro, Link looks like he’s playing the intro music in the background.
Nice, just in time for my evening snack.
@Neo! gigaty
00:30 sooooo..... when are u gonna look at octopath?
This game went down to $40 thank goodness
with this release I hope they use this engine to give us seasons and ages
So I heard in some videos that the FPS issue could be a solvable issue since it seems to be a memory handling problems as in the game seems to have an error with how it loads the game, so it's not so much the amount of enemies but how it handles the loading of information.
Apparently, if you play the game with it being installed in the SD instead of using a cartridge, the FPS issue is less frequent.
I did that and it still chugs in all those scenarios.
I feel the exact same way about Link Between Worlds.
I don't get why people complain about 8-10h games. That is the perfect time for me.
8:23 those two things was never a problem for me
A Johnny video without having to wait 3 weeks? Noice
Its great to just unwind and listen to a brand new Johnny VS after a long days work. Thanks man
The way I look at it when i buy games...
Is that Octopath Traveler over there? 👀
I personally loved the music in this game. I think it's a great remix of the original. Especially the ending credits sound. May be my favourite "old school" Zelda soundtrack. Again, as this sort of thing needs to be constantly stressed, that's just my opinion.
I can’t focus on my presentations with you uploading like this my man.
Johnny: I've been feeling the Need for Speed.
Me: Sweet he is going to play a Need for Speed game!
Johnny 2 seconds later: Team Sonic Racing!
Me: *blinking man meme*
Honestly this is the best review I've seen of the game. It's not too negative or overly critical. Covered a lot of factors about the game and that's why I'm subbed to you after so many years
Hopefully when they remake the Oracle games we won't have to shell out 120 dollars for that shit.
I really like your videos, John. Always very informative, and very well-made.
FINALLY someone talks about the high price in their review. Back in 2016 or 17 I read a comic joking about nintendo making handheld game with console prices and it finally happened. But why they should worry? No reviews talks about it and people buy it anyway just like happened with the online service >=(
I mean, Breath of the Wild has tons of more things to do and is the same price
Not a fan of them removing the photos. That sort of thing would have been the perfect thing to play around with and share with friends and people on Twitter.
Watching this AFTER school unlike people who stop what they are doing to watch the videos.
Well aren't you special?
@@ruf2008 Special Ed? Yeah I guess you could say that.
Dont know how the algorithm works but always comment to try and make sure you get a better shot. Thanks for looking at this John, huge zelda fan!
Nice vid johnny, ur work always puts me in a good mood! Have a great day
I’ve never played the original game but I’m really want to go play this game it looks SO good
I’m a huge Zelda fan but never attempted to beat links awakening.
Why didn't they call this, "The Legend of Zelda: Link's RE-Awakening"?
This was honestly my first thought too. Because now we have: Link's awakening, Link's awakening DX, and...Link's awakening.
Because Nintendo.
Because it is the same story.
Let's hope he does DBZ: Kakarot when that comes out
Considering he's only done the Budokai Tenkaichi trilogy and Dragon Power on the NES, I don't think he will unless he does the Xenoverse duology and FighterZ.
That Latino flair Overworld theme though... ♥️ Great work, as always!
I just have to ask, why can we only move in 8 directions and not a full 360?
Where did you get the shirt that you were wearing?
I know what I'm gonna do.
Question for all: how much was a Gameboy game back in the day?
I will get Link's Awakening (Switch) when the price drops down to that.
I remember in 2004ish buying my nephew a gameboy advance game for fifty dollars
@@Jordan-rNvgQ . You could easily be right. No reason my memory can't be wrong.
7:37 John, is the map a middle finger?
Yeah. I agree.
But again. I sold my Breath of the Wild & Street Fighter 4 for it & all I have to pay with is $20. And I didn't regret it.
The Face Shrine should've been called The Feels Shrine, thanks to the new music 😭
Wait to drop in price? Nintendo? Huh...never heard of it
Nintendo is NOT going to budget price their games. So get over it!
Kevin Ramirez I think you missed the joke
Jokes aside, they do have sales once in a blue moon. I remember seeing that Mario rabbids game being knocked down at one point. I thought about getting it.
@@kevinramirez3134 They will when people get sick of being ripped off. Get over yourself.
YESSSSS, I wasn't expecting it this soon, but I've been so excited for your thoughts on it!
Congratulations on the excellent review. You are one of the few youtubers courageous enough to criticize the game on its abusive price.
The shirts in the store are nice, but where can I get that cool black mage shirt?
I completely agree with you about the price Johnny. $60 for a remake of a Gameboy game is a bit much for my taste. I really hate that this the case for the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon remake as well (These games cost around $30 to $40 when they first released).
I’m surprised that Johnny didn’t talked about Link’s movement being 8-directional instead of the 360°.
