I love Gen 4, but god damn that's easily one of the worst parts of Diamond and Pearl. Thankfully it was somewhat fixed in Platinum, but doesn't change the fact that there's hardly any new fire pokemon in Gen 4.
Funnily enough with all the tones indicative of Kanto, the Slateport Museum mentions that the Abandoned Ship bares a heavy resemblance to the S.S. Anne. This explains why the S.S. Aqua is in use instead during Gen 2. The S.S. Anne frigging CRASHED IN HOENN!
The Gen 3 manual had the actual braille alphabet in it, so you could decipher the thing. READING THE GAME MANUAL OMEGALUL Also FR/LG did the same thing xD
Only in the European manual. North American manual didn't have the Braille alphabet. You have to get the strategy guide or have something that showed the Braille alphabet. (Which I was lucky to have that I got a "Spy Survival" booklet that was at my school book fair which had Braille. It felt like I was discovering the biggest secret in Pokemon with how criptic the requirement was to unlock the Regis)

Wasn't there a room in the game with 26 different "signs" with one letter in braille each that you were supposed to figure out was teaching you the braille alphabet? Or was that only in FR/LG?
Hoenn being weird is exactly why I love it. To me personally no other region has been as interesting to explore outside of the linear route, the Regi's side quest being the highlight of this.
Yeah. Although Gen 5/6 were where I really started. My first Pokémon game was actually Mystery Dungeon on 3DS, the first one on it. Although I have beaten omega ruby and alpha sapphire a bunch of times.
I feel like Johnny doesn't really "get" Pokémon. He dislikes the fact that your MC doesn't have a personality, but that's kind of the point. You're supposed to self-insert. YOU ARE the main character (it is an RPG, after all). He also gets disappointed with the way the Kyogre VS Groudon conflict ends, but doesn't really elaborate why or how he'd make it better or something. IMO, Johnny cares too much about story in video games, to the point that he seems to enjoy them less for that if his standards aren't met. Sure, that can be a valid criticism if the game puts a lot of emphasis on story (like Kindom Hearts), but not for something like Pokémon.
My biggest problem with Emerald is that there are so many HM's that are permanent to proceed to the game & some of them aren't active into the overworld until after you beat an certain Gym Leader that u are now required with. With Fly being an example. And this game has so many backtracking or padding that you'll be getting irritating of. Best example is you Especially with some HM'S that aren't autorized until you beaten the Gym. That is poorly design. And the Pokemon variety and rosters of the game is so lacking that I just wish there were more & the trainers are some of the worst of the series because they been reusing Poochyena, Wingulls or any Pokemons over & over again that you just wish there were more. Also the switching of bike techs is annoying.

Well he is right, though. Hoenn does look like an almost rehash of Kanto. For example. U walk to the grass without an starter. And than you get an starter and started battling. U go to an next town & up to an route & than come all the way back to the professor's lab. U start your journey. U can get an Rattata ( Zigzagoon ), Wingull ( Spearow ), Pidgey ( Tailow ) like Pokemon for your first capture. U go to an town where the first Gym is, but u can't compete yet until later in the game. There's an rehash Viridian Foreat area where u can get an Caterpie like Pokemon that can evolve into an Butterfree or Beedrill like. U can get an Oddish ( Seedot ) or an Bellsprout ( Lotad ) and there final evolutions is required to use an stone. First Gym is an Rock type like Brock was. There's an bicycle route where u can ride though the road only with bikes; like in Kanto, 3rd Gym Leader is an Electric type like Lt. Surge. There's an Grimer & Muk ( Gulphin & Swalot ) replica. There's an sanctuary that looks exactly like the mansion from Kanto & the evil organizations are there. 3/4 of the Elite Four are Ghost, Ice & Dragons types. I can go on.
Here's more. An weak Magikarp like Pokemon that can evolve into an powerful Gyrados like Pokemon. An Krabby & Kingler like Pokemon. An Dratini & Dragonair like that will eventually become Dragonite with an Dragon/Flying that levels up way in the exact way. Is there any more that I'm missing?

Sterling Muse In principle, sure. In execution, they’re almost never explained to the player (the closest is Super Training), and for IVs, their existence is practically the main reason why hacking in VGC is a very big thing, almost baked into it, even.
@@blepthebleep469 Doesn't gen 7 have ways to adjust them without hacking though? I haven't been up to date with it since gen 6, but I thought that was the case
Sterling Muse You’re referring to Hyper Training, and you’re somewhat right, a Hyper Trained stat is treated like a max IV stat. The problem with that system is that it requires the Pokémon to be Lv.100 (a hard enough feat as is), and it requires the use of a item that is only gained through RNG mechanics. Their solution to a problematic RNG mechanic is to layer it with another problematic RNG mechanic.
Pokemon Showdown shows just how much it adds so damn much to Pokemon gameplay and how versatille Pokemon now is. Even during the main story, it makes every Pokemon you get feel unique, and therefore more "real." Natures that would be trash in a competitive setting could be made somewhat useful in the main game-for example, a Pokemon that's a fast sweeper in a competitive setting could have a more defensive nature in a playthrough of the main story, and that defensive nature could be what causes that Pokemon to hang on by very little HP and cause you to win a major battle, giving you memories of that particular Pokemon and having it be special and unique. But yes, it's absolutely ridiculous how time consuming and luck-based it is to legitimately make a competitive-ready Pokemon, even now.
Hmm... I feel like a lot of Hoenn's identity was overlooked in this review. There were a ton of memorable landmarks introduced in this region in my opinion, for example: you could climb up and explore an active volcano, a city that is entirely made up of tree houses, a city that resides inside an inactive volcano (which, mind you, can only be accessed by diving underwater and resurfacing after entering an underwater cave), and a town based entirely in the middle of the ocean and made up of only floating logs and wooden planks to name a few. Hoenn was also the first region to have a desert in a Pokemon game. Idk, in my opinion, Hoenn stands out a ton from the other regions and without a doubt has its own identity. Sure, there are things drawn from Kanto like the cycling road and whatnot (but almost all Pokemon games share these similarities now), but it also brought a substantial amount of new and memorable locations to the table as well.
In terms of variety, maybe. But in terms of the landmarks and exploration, not so much. Honestly, I would've enjoyed it if the game didn't have me to backtrack more than 3 times just to go from my progression and despite how open space Hoenn is, it doesn't do it that very well.
@@jjc4924 Hmm, I would have to kindly disagree. There are a lot of distinguishable landmarks such as the Abandoned Ship, Mt. Chimney, Mt. Pyre, Mirage Tower, Sky Tower, Trick House, New Mauville, Trainer Hill, all the chambers, etc. I'm also confused as to why you mentioned exploration is lacking, then describe how open Hoenn is in the next paragraph? How I saw it, the routes are extremely expansive and encourage exploration with examples like Route 111 (the desert), Route 119, and 120. As for backtracking, I don't really recall having to backtrack at all...
Jordan. I don't know. The way that the game progresses you makes no sense and the way the game handles is progression is really tedious. Especially with the whole overbundents of HM'S the game throws at you and how some aren't autorized until after you beaten an certain Gym to unlock; with Fly being an example that u can't activate until you beaten the 6th gym. It's becomes even more tedious. Like after getting an badge from Rustboro City, there's an connection between an city in an next cave and through the area where meteor cave is at. But there's rocks that u can't get through there and u have to get an Rock Smash for it. So I have to go back near Petalburg to talk the sailor that I rescued it's Wingull to take me towards the next town. That is just one backtracking. But than I go to the volcanic area, to Fallabar Town and to the caves of meteors to stop Team Magma or Aqua. Next after I stop Team Magma or Aqua at the meteor cave, I have to come all the way back to Fallabar Town and the volcanic area where an path to an trolly is opened, than I have to face the evil team again and head to Lavaridge Town. That's also backtracking. And than after my 4th Gym Badge in Lavaridge Town, I have to go all the way back to Petalburg City to face it's dad for the fifth gym. So I have to walk all the way back without having Fly for an shortcut to face Norman for the fifth Badge. Like ok? We're going there already? So I have to do another backtracking again for the 3rd time. And than after beating Norman and receiving Surf, I had to go back to Mauville Town and head west for an new location. That's the 4th time I had to backtrack. Arriving at Fortree City, an invisible wall blockes the 6th Gym, head to routes, meet Steven & giving me his Devon Scope, going back to Fortree City and use it to chase away an invisible wall; which was an Kecleon, and doing the 6th gym. That's the 5th backtracking. After Fortree City, I head back to the route where I met Steven and continuing the path, running through route 121 ( I think. I'm not sure. ), arriving at an town where an mall is at; only realizing that I went back to route 121 ( Again. I think. I'm not sure. ) for an another route that I skip and heading towards Mt. Pyre; you know the cemetary one that looks like the cemetery tower from Gen. 1, where once again Magma or Aqua are at. That's the 6th time I've had to backtrack. But than I have to travel back to the town where the mall is; only I once again realized that the water route is block because of the evil organizations scheme, heading to there hideout and than I have to fly all the way back to that volcanic area where tbe trolly was, where another path to an other evil organizations is at, defeat them and I have to fly back to the town where the mall is at to where the rest of the route is nothing but surfing through water. That's about 7th, 8th and 9th time I have to backtrack again. Granted, at least I can use Fly now to take an shortcut. But still. That's still more than 5 times that I've had to go back & forth and back & forth to the same damn areas that I already travel through more than 3 times already. And it isn't optional. It's mandatory. The game really wants you to head to these stupid craps you'll already wwnt through juat for an new breaching path that we could've explored it from the beginning. Honestly, the way that the game handles it's structured of the game is the game's biggest problem for me. If it didn't have any of this bullcrap that the game wanted you to progress, than I would've had an good time with the game. But unfortunately, it doesn't. It is full of padding. And again, combined with the overbundent of HM issues that the game throws at you, it is really tedious. I really didn't enjoyed it as I was hoping it will. I can't handled it's structure. It's almost as bad as Zelda: Skyward Sword was.
@@jjc4924 The HM issue is something I can agree on, but the backtracking wasn't really an issue in my experience. A lot of the examples you shared aren't necessarily backtracking (like the one you gave with the Fortree gym and Steven/Devon scope), but rather a roadblock which is present in almost every Pokemon game. The reason why I didn't have many issues is the fact that the developers intentionally designed routes to be much faster to navigate when coming back with things like cliffs and having you breeze through descending Mt. Chimney. I never really found any of these things tedious and as far as things are concerned, almost every Pokemon entry has backtracking. Kanto and Sinnoh come to mind having fetch quests within minutes of starting the game. Sinnoh's being the worst offender with how long and tedious the first route is and how large the grass patches are (mixed with the slow engine, makes it a nightmare). With that said, I kinda see where you're coming from; however, I didn't really share the frustration you experienced (minus the HM management). But to each their own.
Jordan. I gonna have to disagree with you about there about the padding not being tedious. Because it sorta is. And the way it's design isn't what I call an genius or it doesn't get any faster. I can sorta see what you mean by that. But it still doesn't make excuses of how the game decision progression and making me backtrack so many times makes it an absolute chore from my enjoyment. I just wish it handles it structure way better than it should've been. Which is why I'm thankful that the remake of Gen. 3 fixes that problem for me. So that makes it less tedious. It's still there in some extent. But not as overkilled as Emerald. Plus with less overbudent of HM's. As for Kanto or Sinnoh having bad padding. I'm gonna disagree in some extents as well. Kanto was at least non-linear, it's optional and doesn't rely on HM's that much. So that gets an pass. And while Sinnoh does have some padding moments, I don't find it nearly as bad as Hoenn was. At least I can use Fly without having to wait for it to autorized at the later 2nd halve of the game. Also, I do agree that Sinnoh has it's very slow moments throughout the entire game. But that only happens in Diamond & Pearl.

The selection of Electric-types sucks in the Hoenn games (with Manectric probably being the best one), and not everyone is going to save $80.000 (or, god forbid, gamble for the 4.000 coins) for that Thunderbolt TM at the Game Corner. Also, Whiscash is immune, Ludicolo takes neutral, Gyarados has Earthquake coverage if you're not fast or strong enough and Milotic has very high Special Defense.

03:00 Johnny talking about Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: "I'm sure these added a lot to make them the definitive Gen 3 experience..." Hahahaha...AHAHAHAHAHA-NO. They're not bad. But NO.
The neat thing about secret bases was when you mix records with other players, their respective bases also show up in your game, and their avatar and team can be battled.
Gen I is far form having a well-paced difficulty Koga is a huge level spike and so is Sabrina, and then Blaine can barely put a dent in your team (seriously, why put a Fire type Gym Leader on an island you can only suft to?). Plus, there are a lot of dumb quirks of Gen I that make or break certain battles (Psychic types, the AI that always goes for a SE type move, even if it's a status movr, the AI not having to worry about PP etc).
What I mean by well paced difficulty curve is that the game gradually gets harder at a challenging pace. Plus the difficulty spikes were only in the Yellow version. Gen 2 had some of the worst pacing I've seen in an RPG. It gets harder at a very slow pace and once you get to Kanto, the difficulty becomes inconsistent. Kanto Trainers are piss easy whilst gym leaders are pretty challenging. GOOD GOD. RED IS SUCH A KICK IN THE NUTS. There's scaring the player and then there's just being a dick.
Ok. I can agree that the level curve in Gen. 2 ( plus the remake ) is pretty bad. But really? It's not that bad & the game isn't that brutal & pathetically easy. The only reason y'all complained about the level curve is because they don't give you enough experience points to level up your Pokemon quicker. Like I understand that. But it's not the end of the world. And you don't have to grind so much just to over leveled your Pokemon that much unless you're that desperate. And it's not that hard to understand on how you strategies the game if you know what or how you're doing. Seriously! It's not that bad.
It is that bad. It makes leveling pokemon in the postgame a complete pain and adds an artificial difficulty to the main story by making grinding so dull and boring that you decide to fight gym leaders and the pokemon league underleveled because you don't want to grind and then realize that it's only difficult because you are underleveled.
Once again. It's not that bad & you don't have to grind so much unless you're that desperate. I do wish it could've raises the level curve up a little bit. I agree. But really? The game isn't that hard to beat. I can beat Red between Level 55-75. It's challenging. But it's not that hard. Just use as many Full Restore or other items on your Pokemon as u can, figure out it's weakness & you want have an big problem.

Also FR/LG did the same thing xD
Only in the European manual. North American manual didn't have the Braille alphabet. You have to get the strategy guide or have something that showed the Braille alphabet. (Which I was lucky to have that I got a "Spy Survival" booklet that was at my school book fair which had Braille. It felt like I was discovering the biggest secret in Pokemon with how criptic the requirement was to unlock the Regis)

Almost the same as me, Sinnoh and Unova are my childhood
With all honesty, I think most of your criticisms are things I find endearing about the franchise as a whole. To each his own, of course...
Well to be fair. He does have an point.
@@MrTiagosuperWell every Pokemon games has it's flaws. So what makes Emerald so perfect than the rest? Huh?

@@blepthebleep469 Doesn't gen 7 have ways to adjust them without hacking though? I haven't been up to date with it since gen 6, but I thought that was the case
Sterling Muse
You’re referring to Hyper Training, and you’re somewhat right, a Hyper Trained stat is treated like a max IV stat.
I am so hyped for you rewiewing black and white as it is by far my favourite game in the series

I was kind of hoping that side thing would be the first Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, but once I saw that N64 on camera, Hey You, Pikachu! just came knocking hard in my mind.
Waited years for this. My favorite gen.

Brendon/May still sucked more ass.

Generation III may have been my introduction to the series, but Generation VII won me over in terms of favorite region.
Also, Johnny, you missed the opportunity during the Rayquaza sequence to use "HEY, CUT THAT SH-T OUT. Okay bye teehee!"
To be fair gen 7 has a good story and characters but my heart always on gen 4&5 like from a great story, interesting characters, great Pokemon introduce in those gens, amazing soundtrack,And best lore on the legendaries (and is Lillie still best girl in alola?)
I love Gen. 7 as well, more specifically; Sun and Moon. It's right up there with Gen. 2 + it's remake & the Gen. 5 games as one of the best Pokemon games out there & one of my favorite games of the series. Probably it's neck to neck with Black 2 and White 2 for my favorite Pokemon games.
Alola is Hoenn, but better.
I like how he stuttered when saying Regice as if he also didn’t even know how to pronounce it.
Not even The Pokemon Company knew how to pronounce it for a while. They flipped between "rehj-ice" and "rehj-E-ice" for a bit before settling on the latter.
You hit the nail on the head to say the Regis thing was captivating back in the day! As a kid finding the secret cave on accident and feeling like youre diving into and digging through this ancient mystery was amazing. The experimentation and solving the riddles was super cool and did a lot of what I wish the Unown mystery did in gen 2. Cool side quest, even if it got to be a bit cryptic at times

I remember using the braille from the guidebook to unlock one of the Regi Chambers while also trying my goddamn hardest to translate the language itself as well since English wasn't my first language, the game wasn't translated to my language and I was like 9 or something.
Then, while I was halfway translating, the game was like "Oh you poor soul" and just opened the door.
Turns out to open the gate for Regice you had to do NOTHING. Still can't decide whether the game helped me on that one or insulted me for taking too long...

You didn't play Emerald long enough to find out your base can be found and stolen by a random NPC. Plus you can battle him. When I battled him he had 1 pokemon and it was a lvl 70 Rayquaza.
Fun fact: Emerald switches the 8th gym leader and replaces the League Champion from the original games.
Which is a good thing: Wallace in Emerald is one of the toughest League Champions in the entire franchise, his Milotic even having a competitive moveset.
@@DarkEinherjar Champion Wallace was alright, the problem with his team is that they're all water types. While he does have some counters for his weaknesses but just a single strong electric type (or one that knows an electric attack) can wipe most of his team. I remember breezing through half his team with just Gardevoir using thunderbolt.
@@DarkEinherjar Yeah that's why I said I breezed through half his team. Wailord was a bit bulky and annoying but wasn't really that big of a threat. Tentacruel went down with psychic, Gyarados went down in one thunderbolt, for Whiscash switch to a grass type, Ludicolo was a bit awkward because of its typing and finally Milotic was the only one that actually made me struggle for a bit.
Fun fact: In Oras before you enter the sky pillar during the delta episode, you have to fight Wallace and his team is the exact same as his champion team in emerald
03:00 Johnny talking about Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: "I'm sure these added a lot to make them the definitive Gen 3 experience..."
Hahahaha...AHAHAHAHAHA-NO. They're not bad. But NO.
The neat thing about secret bases was when you mix records with other players, their respective bases also show up in your game, and their avatar and team can be battled.
Gen 3 contains the well paced difficulty curve of Gen 1 and the improved mechanics of Gen 2.
Gen I is far form having a well-paced difficulty
Koga is a huge level spike and so is Sabrina, and then Blaine can barely put a dent in your team (seriously, why put a Fire type Gym Leader on an island you can only suft to?).

Fun fact: That pronounciation of Pokemon that sounds like it has an "uh" sound in the middle uses the vowel sound known as "schwa". It's the most common vowel in the English language, represented by an e rotated 180° in phonetic spellings, and can be represented by a, e, i, o, u, or even y depending on the context. Other examples include the a's in "America", the u in "stun", the io in "pronunciation", and many many more.
This game was my childhood. The first Pokemon game that I could remember from back then.
The braille section was fun for me as a kid. Making a braille legend on a piece of paper and deciphering the clues felt awesome in elementary school
Man, now that I'm playing through Pokémon Sapphire again in celebration of its 20th anniversary (in North America, at least), it has been kind of throwing me for a loop, because muscle memory is a massive pain. However, I'm slowly being reminded why I love Generation III so much.
Once again, I hate it when I end up doing some kind of advertisement for my own channel's content, but it is a really nice playthrough so far, I've even setup polls so that viewers can influence the outcome of the playthrough...That's all, I will see myself out.
