Not sure the analysis of Eternal Confidence around 16:20 is on point. This class feature makes it so ripostes and finishers have the characteristic of a Confident Finisher. It doesn’t give that characteristic to every strike.
Oh shoot, you're 100% right. I swear my brain just ignores words from time to time. Thank you for pointing that out. I'll pin this comment so people can see it! Kind of unfortunate though, as a level 19 feature, that seems a bit too weak now.
@@Nonat1s Yeah, I agree, it's a little weak. There's a swashbuckler in my campaign and they get REALLY frustrated with how luck-dependent everything they do is, so I could see a player taking this feat just to give themselves a break from the dice rolls and some guaranteed damage, even though it's suboptimal.
@@larscasteen Really? Swashbuckler, from what I've read, seems like one of the least Luck-Dependant classes out there thanks to their super consistent bonus damage and effects. If they're upset that they're failing panache-skills and attack rolls, I don't think that's necessarily the class's fault unfortunately. That's just D20 systems as a whole.
@@Nonat1s I think it's like - for instance - Rogues get to do their precision damage through flanking, but Swashbucklers need to beat a Save DC with their Tumble Through, Feint, Shove, etc... usually with a stat that isn't their 18. For gymnasts especially, if they miss with a Shove, Grab, or Trip, then any subsequent roll suffers from MAP on top of being with a suboptimal stat. And if they critically miss with one of these, then they fall prone or who-knows-what-else happens. And then Opportune Riposte only triggers when the opponent critically misses. I haven't done enough analysis to know that they are strictly more luck dependent than other classes, but their bread-and-butter moves only happen when they take significant risks, so I think they're significantly harder to plan out turns for than, say, a Fighter or a Champion. Or maybe my player is just whiny.
So... two Swashbucklers with the opportune parry build throwing daggers at each other but missing could keep sending the dagger back towards the other like a deadly game of Tenis
Just as a note: for lethal finisher, you forgo your normal precise strike damage. So if they critically succeed, you're only getting 6 precision damage rather than your normal dice + 6, and if they critically fail, you're getting 18d6, not 18d6 + normal dice.
Currently playing a Swashbuckler in my first ever Pathfinder game, and I'm loving it. I actually opted to do some Multiclassing/Archetype feats though, in taking the Dragon Bloodline Sorcerer archetype, just so I could have the dragon claws to use as a finesse weapon, and eventually have access to Haste and some other little utility spells. So far, it's been a ton of fun, very interesting and fun class, and the sheer variety of options in feats makes it a little hard to decide what to take and what to pass up on honestly.
Swashbuckler is the coolest class!! Was very surprised about its uniqueness when I read through it. Braggard is the worst finisher?? Dude the finisher is incredible! The only ability in the game to get rid of the Demoralize immunity!!
Just a little thing: a lot of their feats need the swashbuckler to have a free hand. The buckler, being a very nimble shield, counts as having the hand that uses it free, something that a steel shield doesn't. So this is more than a "flavor" feat.
I would absolutely use "After You" - I tend to roll ones and twos on my initiative anyway, so I might as well just not bother rolling and get panache for my trouble.
Also good considering Perception is usually rolled for Initiative unless you Sneak, so Swashbucklers won't usually have a high initiative roll anyway without other feats.
Battle about to start, you just stand asserting dominance with both arms crossed in the middle of the field while everything happens. Why? Because you're a gigachad
Continuous Flair is a little better with a good GM, because keep in mind you can gain panache from doing cool things too. So picture a scene where you're at sea and the guy at the helm is knocked from his post during a storm. Your swashbuckler swings dynamically from the rigging of the ship gaining panache and takes the helm, getting a +1 to take a risky path through the rocks that will get the ship out of a pickle if you make it. Basically just doing something cool makes you better at doing cool things.
I love Swashbuckler. Sometimes I open the APG just to gaze longingly at it. I love that you can build many distinct characters in the class. I played a pirate goblin in one game and in other a killer clown that juggled and threw juggling pins and threw explosives and traps around. Love it.
Yeah! I usually play spellcasters, but I adore a fully Martial Class like this. No magic or anything supernatural, just an incredibly agile and talented swordsman.
I don't know about you but Leading Dance as a feat is pretty hilarious when you consider that you could potentially dance your opponent over the edge of a cliff all Looney Tunes style.
Pretty sure the rules for Forced Movement universally let you resist being led into explicit danger, usually by willingly falling prone. Which in and of itself is a boon to the player.
Deadly grace looks even better when you remember that striking runes increase the number of deadly dice. With major striking rune rapier would deal additional 6d10 damage on crit. That's insane!
You successfully made swashbuckler be something I will actually use. I always loved them for flavor, but thought the damage was very subpar. I somehow passed over all the extra damage they automatically get, and that makes a world of difference
Bleeding Finisher is madness. At lvl 20. It is 6d6 persistent (12d6 on Crit). Which given 15DC should be 300% of base damage. So average of 36d6 over three rounds on a Crit. Plus you still have weapon damage.
Having been playing a Swashbuckler in a game I have to say they're fun for sure but once they hit 3rd level they really start to come online. Everything just feels so great and if you can get high DEX armor that doesn't hinder you then they are terrifying in combat.
This is a great class because there are so many ways to play it. With the Battle Dancer style, for example, you can create a solid approximation of the Dancer job from the Final Fantasy series; an agile performer with little to no armor who can mesmerize enemies and fight effectively with light finesse weapons, like daggers.
This guide is really helpful! I was thinking of making (then made) an ex circus performer Strix Battledancer Swashbuckler. I'm gonna get so emotionally attached to him you just watch.
Really like the new thumbnail aesthetic! As a quick sidenote that's kinda related to the swashbuckler: What are your hopes for a gunslinger class? Would you rather see it as a full class or as an archetype, or as a class archetype that only some classes can "upgrade" to?
I think an archetype would work fine for Gunslinger, however I think I'd like to see something along the lines of a "Mechanic" class. Something similar to 5e's artificer with a bit less magic involved. Able to make constructs and other non-magical mechanical items each day like an alchemist's reagents. Let them make firearms, turrets, and animated constructs that get better at each level! In that same vein, I think "Mechanical Crafting" would be an excellent skill feat to add as an option available to all Crafting Characters, giving players the ability to craft their own firearms and such.
Gunslinger would work better as an archetype honestly. Not a fan of a weapon being specific to a class. Swashbuckler, fighter, ranger, investigator or even paladin + gunslinger to get each flavor of gun slinging hero: Fighter + gunslinger: war veteran-esque tired soldier Champion + gunslinger: holy bullets pleaae Investigator + gunslinger: too good to pass up Etc etc
@@Nastara We've done some really fun things by using ranger with a fighter archetype. Most of the feats designed to work with a crossbow are worded "weapon with a reload" so still work on firearms. And firearms themselves are pretty easy to homebrew by taking a crossbow, adding the fatal quality, a misfire quality, and the same critical specialisation as slings. i.e. chance to stun. I mean, there's a little more to our final implementation, but that's the general gist
Wit is my favorite. How can you not love being an Insult Sword Fighter ala Guybrush Threepwood? Seriously, Bon Mot is one of my favorite skill feats. Insult someone to give them a big penalty for a minute...unless they retort your insult with an action. The Swashbuckler is such a fun class. Always loved the personality behind it. This! I'm currently wondering if Murray (who HAS to accompany Guybrush) would be better as an intelligent item or an NPC cohort/hireling ... though it also would be funny to baffle everyone around you by playing a light-footed dwarven battledancer or an orcish fencer.
Hm, the idea of a gymnast swashbuckler reminds me of a manga I heard about called Air Master. I need to check the options for a swashbuckler MC monk or martial artist.
Monster DPS class. We're lvl 17 right now and my finisher crits can get into the 200s for damage. Not to mention Scare to Death for a Braggart built around high Cha and Intimidate. My DM HATES me. I took Rogue Dedication and Gang up at 12th as well.
If the mayor would start the encounter after you rolling intimidation, I think it would make sense that your intimidation roll is your initiative roll. Therefore you would get Panache.
Fascinate was both buffed and nerfed in 2e. You can fascinate while in combat, but it only prevents opponents from using concentration actions. You can still be attacked by a normal weapon. At best it holds off the spell caster for a round or two.
I’m playing an orc swashbuckler battledancer with a +1 dueling spear as my primary weapon. Totally a blast. He’s a beefy orc from a hold scarred war tribe. Tattoo artist feat that uses scarification with an obsidian knife. He’s fun so far.
Having had arrows hit a shield boss and then pinwheel back towards me, as a re-enactor, impossible riposte makes a bit of sense, especially if you have a polished metal buckler.
I recently made a hobgoblin pirate swashbuckler as a one off villain named Skullcleave Morgan. Along with his ship he was the coolest npc ever. We would swing around the ships demoralizing gaining panache and dealing so much damage.
Isn't Rorak Thunderbird a Swashbuckler in the Band of Bravos liveplay campaign that Paizo has? Interesting since this could easily promote that campaign.
I know its a bit situational, but Impaling Finisher can be quite a brutal move early game if you can position yourself correctly in combat (possibly via a Tumble Through action)... Just imagine critting with such an attack, man... XD
I normally don't like swashbucklers, I prefer martial classes with some heft to them, so fighters and barbarians and stuff. But watching this video gave me the concept of a dwarf who's background is in gladiator combat and becomes a gymnast swashbuckler when she becomes an adventurer so she can still use her surprising agility and habit of pinning and tripping her opponent out in the field. Now I've got a character concept who fights with a rapier to help her disarm and either A. a free hand to do grapples and shoves with, B. a clan dagger to parry with, or C. a whip to help her trip people. She sounds rad, and now I want to play her, so damn, that's another entry in my roster of characters in storage.

Sounds like a great class. I wish just one of these systems would do bucklers correctly. It's held in the hand. Whoever first came up with the forearm strap rule never saw an actual buckler and every game continues the falsehood.
Though it's historically inaccurate, I think the forearm buckler fills a mechanical niche of a shield that trades some defenses in exchange for a free hand.
Buckler Dance isn't exactly the same as Dueling Dance. You can raise a buckler while holding a light item such as a potion or scroll, while Dueling Dance has a free hand requirement. Buckler Dance is slightly mechanically superior (as is buckler as a whole over duelist).
One thing I HEAVILY disagree with about the Swashbuckler is that there isn't a feat or means to use Finishers with actual RANGED weapons, like a firearm or crossbow! I mean, if I'm playing a swashbuckler that is meant to be a pirate, lemme use a GUN with my finishers! I mean, that wouldn't even be stepping on the rogue's toes. After all, Sneak Attack has similar weapon requirements (at least for melee or thrown weapons) but only against flat-footed creatures. You have to jump through a hoop to get a finisher off anyway, so come on Paizo!
anyone else also worried about the balance of the classes. i mean rouges can keep up, other classes might cry seeing you. swashbucklers sound super fun to play as, not with.
So a high lvl halflin swashbuckler would have advantage on nearly everything and count his results one better? sounds nice. But that aside I rly like the idea of a dwarven Swashbuckler with his clan dagger and dive full into the riposte feats. MAybe he is even using only his clan dagger and is bragging about how he only needs the symbol of his clan to defeat his opponents
Though the paizo books themselves never use the term (maybe for legal reasons?) so in theory it is possible. Though it is unlikely that anyone picking up PF2 for the first time is unfamiliar with 5e
So, how many of us have a jack sparrow inspired swashbuckler at our table? really? everyone? xD This is indeed my favourite class as well. swashbuckler following Cayden Cailean for some rp flavour, always a solid choice.
Using a finisher doesn’t mean you can’t attack anymore, means you can’t take any “attack” trait action, you can make a finisher if you’re in panache, regain panache in someway and use another finisher. Finishers are strikes but have not the attack trait. 🤷🏻♂️
@@Nonat1s Attack action perform a strike Escape action is an attack (has the attack trait) Finisher action use one or more strikes but has not the attack trait. Period. Rules are clear! "Once you use a finisher, you can't use actions that have the Attack trait for the rest of your turn"
Just so no one else makes this mistake. All finishers have a strike as a subordinate action. While you can use a second finisher, you cannot use its strike (which has the attack trait). Since all finisher effects depend on your strike roll, this means that in practice you cannot use two finishers on the same round. You would just burn your action/panache and gain no benefit.
Hmm, I acknowledge up front that this is my first exposure to Pathfinder 2e but my experience with other game systems has me thinking that you are interpreting Flamboyant Athlete incorrectly when you say you can leap the distance from a standstill. I think when they say your speed of 'X' they don't mean your speed rating. They mean that you have achieved that speed (covered at least that much ground) in a move action prior to the leap. Again, I haven't dug into it, I am just watching your videos because my interest in tabletop RPG has been rekindled with Paizo and ORC.
His interpretation is, I believe, correct. When it refers to “having speed of x” that definitely just refers to your speed stat in your character sheet.
Okay so I see this a lot. Is it not common knowledge that for trips, grapples, etc that if your weapon has that trait and finesse you can use dex for the athletics check? Because that is how those traits work because finesse allows all attacks to use dex and the combat maneuver traits let you use the weapon for the athletics check which is an attack. Just saying that gymnast is a bit better after knowing that.
I don't think that's true. Finesse allows dex for 'attack rolls'. Trip and the like are not *attack rolls*. They have the *attack trait*, but are skill checks. There is a difference. The attack trait applies MAP, but does not change the type of check you are making.

2)Regular strike,
3) finisher
Reac) attk of opportunity when they stand up
I need to find a Pathfinder 2 game to join
Every time he said deadly d8 my brain kept going dirty deeds.😂
You were surprised that Swashbucklers are full of charm and flavor? Oh, Nonat. You silly child...
Thanks mate, love how you present this. I will probably this class in my next P2 game. It looks really awesome.
Sounds like a great class. I wish just one of these systems would do bucklers correctly. It's held in the hand. Whoever first came up with the forearm strap rule never saw an actual buckler and every game continues the falsehood.
Yes, you are right.
Ive always hated bucklers for this reason in d&d
Though it's historically inaccurate, I think the forearm buckler fills a mechanical niche of a shield that trades some defenses in exchange for a free hand.
@@Aurocket use a small shield. Like the Targe.
playing a Swashbuckler with the personality of either Dante or Nero from DMC would be fun
Absolutly nice guide
Goblin Swashbuckler FTW
About the experience warning, my first pathfinder characters were swashbucklers and oracles hahaha
I got to check if the multiclass archetype for this one is better than that for magus.
"As long as you're not wielding anything in your left hand and it's open..."
.
Not your left hand...your off hand.
.
Damn right-handists. :)
#lefthandsmatter
Me and my play group all call it pah-naw-chi XD.
Just like my favorite italian pasta! Guh-naw-chi!
I desperately want to play a catfolk gambler swashbuckler that uses cards as throwing weapons
How does Confident Finisher work if it crits?
Braggart's finisher is the most broken busted fun, what do you mean
Lethal finisher, holy crap.
In out Pathfinder 1E campaign, i play a Swashbuckler/Rogue. I wanted to play a thief that could fight and be maneuverable!
Great video nonat 🎉😅
Opportune Repose allows you to ATTEMPT to disarm (which is difficult).
so rare that stunning finisher do not have the incapacitation trait...
I like the information and style but everytime I hear nonat it sounds like nonad and I giggle.
It's a neatly focused class.
My favorite class
Buckler Dance isn't exactly the same as Dueling Dance. You can raise a buckler while holding a light item such as a potion or scroll, while Dueling Dance has a free hand requirement. Buckler Dance is slightly mechanically superior (as is buckler as a whole over duelist).
Shoony Swashbuckler. Tumble for days
I picked a Wit Swashbuckler Catfolk on my first Pathfinder 2e game. I accidentally built Puss In Boots.
Great video
Could you specify why u say they're not fun to play with?
Panachee sounds like a sweet pastry.
“Advantage” is not a Pathfinder mechanism and many Pathfinder players will be confused by the reference to it,
Doubt
Though the paizo books themselves never use the term (maybe for legal reasons?) so in theory it is possible. Though it is unlikely that anyone picking up PF2 for the first time is unfamiliar with 5e
No Nat Mantua made me laugh
He should not make you laugh. He should make you FEAR.
So, how many of us have a jack sparrow inspired swashbuckler at our table? really? everyone? xD
This is indeed my favourite class as well. swashbuckler following Cayden Cailean for some rp flavour, always a solid choice.
A catfolk (lion) roaring into every battle, leaping and pouncing my oppents as they bleed to death. F a bunch of Jack Sparrow. ;)
So at high level it's nearly impossible to miss, and even if you do you can almost all the same damage .... sounds nice ...
Using a finisher doesn’t mean you can’t attack anymore, means you can’t take any “attack” trait action, you can make a finisher if you’re in panache, regain panache in someway and use another finisher. Finishers are strikes but have not the attack trait. 🤷🏻♂️
All strikes have the attack trait.
@@Nonat1s Attack action perform a strike
Escape action is an attack (has the attack trait)
Finisher action use one or more strikes but has not the attack trait.
There is an errata that clarified you cannot use dex for athletics with a finesse weapon.
Bon mots is French for good words.
Can you do a deep dive on witch please?!?!
You'll be very pleased next wednesday 😉
