I was fortunate to own one of the Minstrel's sons. I just had to put him down this July at the age of 37. He was a true thoroughbred and had the same stride as his sire. It's fun to see old videos like this, thanks for posting!
Remember my Dad dancing around our living room when Piggot lifted the Minstrel over the line in front .The next week my Dad drove our brand new Ford Cortina on to the drive.
Maybe so but he couldn’t have raced these days with the whip rules. He whipped his mount violently 13 times in the last 100 yards…..count them. Disgraceful.
I was there with two of my best friends. Unfortunately neither are with us now. Great ride from Lester, although so many people there, we were only able to see the tops of the jockey’s heads as they past the post
when you see Blushing Groom being loaded up its amazing to see how much Nashwan looked like him. They are almost identical, same white socks and colouring.
Yes John Penney showing you do not need to have a big team of talking heads to cover this competently, The added bonus of Peter Moore`s voice and graphics on the result too.
Alastor - especially at this track always in the right place and Lester’s mounts never seem to roll down the camber and notice how with the exception of the very stout stayer Teenoso Lester never really asks his Derby winners till about 2 out nowadays jockeys seem all to be scrubbing away 3 furlongs and more out
@@georgepillson1544 Quite right sir. Modern day jockeys don't have the skill to judge the pace of a race .Lester was Supreme at this and his finishing n driving in the last furlong are Remarkable as u well indicate. Amazing he stated Sir Ivor was the best horse he ever rode but I can see why now .My first Derby was 71 I was 10 and in 72 I was speechless how Lester got Roberto up and he lowered the Brigadier s colours in the Benson n Hedges although Joe Mercer said after the race the Brigadier was not him self? However I m not certain Lester was on Roberto that day .?..Kind regards sir..Glynn n Greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands
Probably Lester's second best ride. After royal academy of course. Mind you Roberto and ardross etc is up there too. I don't really know. W hat I do know is that Lester was the greatest by a country mile.
I thought the BBC was at Epsom racecourse until 1981when ITV was televising the derby so why was the Late John penny is commentating and not Peter O' Sullivan
Willie said i really thought id kicked clear and knew my horse would stay all day..then my right ear i started to hear crack crack crack of the old shellaighly .i just knew who it was .as he drew level i saw the white socks and thought shit its piggott again..and he nodded me...a master tactician..the minstrel only jyst got 1m 4f..
@AlienTenno I started betting aged 28 in 1993, used to go with my Grandad as a kid in 1970s on a Saturday morning, stand outside bookies while he collected, saw blokes writing on whiteboards as I peered through the multi coloured plastic strips hanging over door lol.
Whips were also non standard then and a whip was easily loaded with extra weight. I would have liked to have seen the condition of The Minstrel the next morning!!!!!
I remember just getting hone from school in time to watch this - Piggott’s brilliant judgment meant the apparently failed miler The Minstrel achieved the heights
Intriguing race.Stalked the second. Won't see much of that these days re - whip in "wrong hand" knowing horse had the stamina and guts, to close down facing a flailing whip.Remarkable.Bit of the destined there.
As a race commentator myself, John Penney was excellent commentator. Learned a great deal from his approach and listening to his calls growing up. Now I am the caller at 6 tracks in the USA.

God like timing. Makes every hair on my head stand up! What a genius!
I love the way all the horses are being ridden hard 2-3 furlongs out. Yet you tell people this now on UA-cam they say the jockey went too early.
Lester was truly an incredible artist on a horse 🙏
RIP Lester Piggott, a true legend.
Maybe so but he couldn’t have raced these days with the whip rules. He whipped his mount violently 13 times in the last 100 yards…..count them. Disgraceful.
Another great ride from sir Lester, impeccable jockey.
RIP, Lester Piggot The Best of the Best the world has ever seen 🙏🙏🙏
Those were the days 20 runners a proper race, now it's 10 runners, six trained by one man, never watch it now.
I backed the Minstrel that day. I was 15 and on holiday in Ireland with my dad visiting my uncle. I think I had 50p on it. Happy memories
Genius no other word
Rip the legend who died today

Minstral reminds me of the "iron horse"
Giants Causeway 👍🏽
What a battler he was.
John Penney was a great commentator
RIP Lester..
GOAT
No its a Horse 😂😂
The maestro on the minstrel hot grove was good too won the vase
RIP L piggot you were the best
What a ride by Willie
The maestro

when you watch these old clips of Piggott you can't help but notice how well balanced he is on a horse-

Willie Carson made lester really work to win that race. He won the Derby on erhaab many years later
he also won it on Troy Henbit and Nashwan
The fools. The fools. They gave us 5 to 1 on the Minstrel.
I think you meant 5-1 against.
My 1st bet 10p Win Johnny G leading up I believe Lester Masterclass👍

The INCOMPARABLE LESTER PIGGOTT !
MINSTREL - EPSOM, MYSTICAL - MUMBAI. 😂😂😂
I counted 17 strikes of the whip by Lester. Unacceptable now, of course.
You know Lester is getting serious, when he does his "triple whip action".
As you say, unacceptable now.
ou know he's really getting serious when he snatches the other jockeys whip from him!
The minstrel was syndicated for 9 million pound

Both ITV and BBC covered The Derby live in 1977
Lester. Just the best
Agreed, just the best. Always surprised he didn't rate Crepello more highly though
He actually did say crepello was his best derby winner
@@gazowen7310 yes your right had Crepello not had crapello legs He would have won the triple crown and been up there with nijinsky

G'wan Hot Groove ya gud ting :P
I counted Piggot whack The minstrel 18 times from the 2 furlong pole . Surely this won the race , dont ban the whip
Piggot would get a big ban today for whipping The Minstrel that many times inside the last 2 furlongs...love the results card lol

Nearly flogged the horse to death

John godden was the assistant trainer to that horse
Funny how horse who lost by 4 lengths a few weeks prior will lose by 12 lengths easily at Epsom.
what are you on about
This looked fast
What a race half a million people on the downs to see it.
Never know for su
The minstrel a horse with real guts.
Willie Carson hit the front too early on Hot Grove
No he tried to use his buckets of stamina
Great ride but he would've been banned for whip use if riding today!
Lester hit The Minstrel about 50 times. Today that’s definitely a fine and a ban
More like a 5-year ban and 100 grand fine.
