  • This is taken from the VHS tape "Arkle: The Legend". Includes the ITV broadcast of the highlights of the race with Arkle in the paddock and entering the winners' enclosure.

      Elf and safety. The 1979 Irish National with Tied Cottage looked like the local point-to-point, going by the crowds and huntsmen on the course.

    Arkle was an amazing specimen of a horse , we ll certainly never see his like again , anybody who thinks he wasn t the greatest ever is deluded , I was a kid but was always in awe of him , his weight carrying performances unbelievable , wonderful memories .

    The ITV and BBC vaults must contain video film of many, many horse races from the 1960s, which will probably never again see the light of day. It's a great shame when there must be other races that Arkle, Flyingbolt and Mill House, among others, contested and which were covered by those television channels. Unlike America, where it values its television heritage, the two British channels of the day erased so many television programmes by actually taping over much of its video footage which, quite frankly, is absolutely disgraceful.

      At that time, most broadcasts were live and so it could have been simply too expensive to record them or archive them. Like, there are some races where we only have the radio commentaries.
