This track was very special back in the day, before the internet. The only time you really heard it was on FM radio....and it was always a thrill when you caught it in the air.
@@edwardcoit9748 It was also on a sampler album called the Golden Age of Atlantic which also had a 10-minute version of Simon and Garfunkel's America by YES
Hey Hey also surfaced on an Atlantic sampler album called The New Age of Atlantic in 1972. Many of us bought it because Zep were on it. However this track would have fitted on LZIII very easily.
Never heard poor tom before. Thanks for including it. But it strikes me that any other band could have made a career from the songs Zep didn't use on their albums.
Hey Hey came out on the box set when I was in high school. big influence with guitar heads at the time. adore it, play it and sing it to this day. i am Southern, Shenandoah of VA. feels comfortable in my mouth, my drawl.
I really like these two songs and I think both would have fit nicely on album iii. The thing with Hats off to Harper is that I'm sure they wanted that tribute to him be on the album, and given limited "space", choices have to be made, eh? Just glad they ended up on Coda. Thanks for including these relative to how they fit LZ's recording timeline. Enjoyed this a lot! :)
🤣🤣your pic is hilarious! Your faces over the bands lol. Cute! Great episode guys. Love Hey Hey What Can I Do. Too bad it didn’t make it onto Zeppelin 3 or the original Coda. Cheers✌️
Maybe consider playing 'Feel So Bad/Fixin' To Die/That's Alright Mama' and 'Key To The Highway' if you wanted to hear some other songs recorded at the same time :)
Depending on your market, Hey Hey took a while to get played on the radio because of the subject matter; he's looking for his "street-corner girl" a euphemism for a prostitute and describes her as several things, including as a woman who "wanna ball all day" with "ball" being a crude euphemism for sex. I remember as a kid sometimes hearing the lyrics "fuzzed out" a little and I always thought it wickedly subversive when a radio station would play the unedited version. Ah! How times have changed! lol Poor Tom follows along of Gallows Pole in being a bit macabre. In it, Poor Tom who's a "seventh son" - a seventh son of a seventh son supposedly has powers like healing, being psychic, etc. has a wife named Ellie May. The lyrics go on to say Tom's wife "couldn't keep her dresses down" and because there "ain't nothing you can hide from Tom" he confronts her with a gun and kills her to "ease his mind" and the lyrics tell us Tom has "gotta die for what you've done". Definitely a bit of oddball song and I love it as a deep track.
Hey Hey What Can I Do, was played on FM Rock radio sometimes. Oh guys, the Mandolin is John Paul Jones. Don't know if the Bass was overdubbed or the Mandolin. Jonsey is a muti instrumentalist.
Either song would have been better on Zep 3 vs the one that they chose. This is just my opinion though. I do agree with a previous comment though as to why they used the other song
From what I know about LZ singles, the record label pushed for the singles releases, not the band. I'm not sure the B-side selections were even made by the band! And, just a random thought about lyric content in LZ songs -- in a fairly recent interview, Robert Plant made a comment that, in retrospective, he may have told a few too many people that he loved them... Have y'all noticed that the desire for a faithful female companion is a recurring theme? The most longterm and happiest relationship is with the dog in Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp!
"Hey Hey" is tediously pedestrian -- not the LZ standard at all. ( but you are right about the bass being interesting ) Anyway, I agree that "Poor Tom" belongs on the B Side of IS That's THE UNIVERSE that I want to live in.... :-)
Yeah I have the single of “ Immigrant Song” with HHWCID on the “ B” side. I’d actually prefer either of the two songs you reacted to in place of HOTRH, which I can’t bear to listen to. I think they were attempting to create the sound of some old Delta Blues vinyl recordings from the 1930’s but it sounds terrible. The vocals on Poor Tom are buried way too deep in the mix in my opinion. Legend has it that the 1970 sessions for LZ3 created the outline for “ No Quarter” , which does not get recorded until May/June 1972 and appears on the “ Houses Of The Holy” album. Have never heard any bootleg evidence of this however.
I never cared that much for Hey Hey. It has a really nice bass line and I like the hook in the chorus. The music during the verse is not that interesting and Plant did not seem to put any effort into the lyrics. Poor Tom, on the other hand, is significantly more interesting. I really like the alternate tuning on the acoustic guitar. I only wish it took a left turn (change up the drums and work a different guitar line) and continued on for another two minutes.
Hey Hey would have definitely fit as a transition from the heavier side side 1 to the more acoustic second side. It's a mystery why they didn't put this on the lp. It's a great song, miles above that pos Harper song. Maybe they didn't want to hurt Roy Harper's feelings, as they were friends. But that Harper song is God awful.
The lyrics of Hey, Hey, What Can I Do are just lazy. Out of 12 lines that should rhyme only half of them do, and once they rhyme times with... time. My creative writing teacher in high school would've given me a D for that. Here's my edit: Want to tell you about the girl I love My she looks so fine She's the only one that I been dreamin' of Maybe someday she will be all mine I want to tell her that I love her so I thrill with her every touch I need to tell her she's the only one I really love, Oh, I need her so much I got a woman, want to ball all day I got a woman, she won't be true, no I got a woman, stay drunk all the time I said I got a little woman and she won't be true Sunday morning when we go down to church See the menfolk standin' in line I said they come to pray to the Lord With my little girl, looks so fine In the evening when the sun is sinkin' low Everybody's with the one they love I walk the town, keep a-searchin' all around Lookin' for my sweet little dove I got a woman, want to ball all day I got a woman, she won't be true, no no I got a woman, stay drunk all the time I said I got a little woman and she won't be true In the bars, with the men who play guitars Singin', drinkin' and rememberin' the times My little lover does a midnight shift She takes them all for every dime I guess there's just one thing a-left for me to do Gonna pack my bags and move on my way 'Cause I got a worried mind sharin' what I thought was mine Gonna leave her where the guitars play

Best band ever led Zeppelin
Even their throwaway songs were pretty good. There's just something about the "sound" of this band... so good!
'We're Gonna Groove' was on that throwaway album. How one of their greatest tracks ended up there, I'll never know!
Zeppelin's throwaway songs that don't make the band's cut for an album are TEN TIMES more kickass than any music being made today.
This song is on the B SIDE of the 45 RPM Immigrant song , have it in my Juke box ! sounds great !
Led zeppelin is the definition of rock and roll best band ever
They have been my Favorite Band I'm 64 I have all their stuff, At least they put these tracks on Coda
This track was very special back in the day, before the internet. The only time you really heard it was on FM radio....and it was always a thrill when you caught it in the air.
I had the Japanese import 45, side B of the Immigrant Song.

I used to hear Hey Hey on the radio all the time
The story of my misspent youth. I still miss her
One of their best songs.
Aww, you cut it a second early Lol. Love both these songs and JPJ is really good here. Such a great player.
Never heard poor tom before. Thanks for including it. But it strikes me that any other band could have made a career from the songs Zep didn't use on their albums.
yes 99% of bands would LOVE the tracks zeppelin didnt put on albums lol
I don't believe Hey Hey was left off of III. Never could understand that.
Hey Hey came out on the box set when I was in high school. big influence with guitar heads at the time. adore it, play it and sing it to this day. i am Southern, Shenandoah of VA. feels comfortable in my mouth, my drawl.
I love Hey Hey What Can I Do. Great fun , song.

I just love the fact that we have all this great music in the first place. Should've, would've , could've I leave for you all to discuss.
Maybe consider playing 'Feel So Bad/Fixin' To Die/That's Alright Mama' and 'Key To The Highway' if you wanted to hear some other songs recorded at the same time :)
Poor Tom is a wonderful song. John Bonham's skill is very apparent. Wow.

Dev thanks for saying that about Robert's voice. He is my favorite and most sexy singer ever 😍 ❤️

i love both os these tracks, and i especially love the drums on poor tom, such a cool groove
Moist Excellente!!! Great Acoustic Tunes!!! Thanx for selecting these very good tracks 😾
really great to hear these, especially cut 1, such an underrated tune....and yes, u r right, would have set in nicely on Z3
attractive, intelligent, funny, unique, friendly ...... these are just a few adjectives I would use to describe Mike and Dev
I had a single with this as the b side of immigrant song
I bought the Japanese re-pressing in the '80's. Great sound.

Same here. Most expensive single I ever bought. Worth every penny.
I’ve always loved HHWCID it would have fit well on side 2 of III. Check out Page & Plant doing it live. Great job.
Some deep cuts here too!!

They didnt wanted to waste this song but they didnt think it fits the album too
I got a girl wanta ball all day
Makes sense to me.
The great John Paul jones on mandolin.

The be honest, both songs got a certain 90's vibe to them... certainly wouldn't be out of place in that decade

I prefer LZ III just the way it is - both for song choices & continuity, but Hey Hey i've always liked on it's own merits...
If Dev had a band to do a retrospective of who would it be?? 🤔
Prob someone like Annie Lennox
@@MusicforBusyPeople interesting choice. Annie has a great voice and deserves more recognition.

Id much rather listen to Hey Hey than most of the later stuff, including Achilles, Nobody's Fault etc.

Everybody's with the one they love
I walk the town, keep a-searchin' all around
Lookin' for my sweet little dove
I got a woman, want to ball all day
I got a woman, she won't be true, no no
I got a woman, stay drunk all the time
I said I got a little woman and she won't be true
In the bars, with the men who play guitars
Singin', drinkin' and rememberin' the times
My little lover does a midnight shift
She takes them all for every dime
I guess there's just one thing a-left for me to do
Gonna pack my bags and move on my way
'Cause I got a worried mind sharin' what I thought was mine
Gonna leave her where the guitars play
