The undervalued Mazda3 is still selling, but the modest Japanese automaker knows when to go big on crossovers and SUVs to keep growing.
By adding the 2.5 S hatchback grade, Mazda made the 2025 Mazda3 cheaper. In its May Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) report, Mazda again emphasized the CX crossover SUVs. The CX-30, CX-50, and CX-90 had their best May sales ever, and January through May sales were up 8.3% from last year to approximately 167k units.
The CX-30 rose 39%, the CX-50 53%, and the CX-90 435.5% year-to-date! Although the CX-5 is the company's best-selling model with over 58k units, it declined 13.5% during the period, indicating tiredness.
It's little wonder Mazda isn't rushing to invest in a new MX-5 Miata when the little roadster loses 30% of its sales from year to year while crossover and SUV sales are booming. Japanese brand currently sells the CX-30 for $25k, the CX-5 for $29,300, the CX-50 for $1k more, and the new CX-70 and CX-90 siblings.
They replace the Mazda CX-9 and are built on the Large Product Group's longitudinal engine configuration and RWD/all-wheel drive design, which is also used in the CX-60 and CX-80. Imagine you question about their distinctions. In that case, the CX-90 and CX-70 share bodywork, design, length, and engine options: a 3.3-liter turbo inline-six with 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque and a PHEV with a 2.5-liter inline-four and 68 kW electric motor for 323 horsepower.
The CX-90 has three rows of seats whereas the CX-70 has two, and that's about it for differences. Curiously, pricing is another consideration. Interestingly, the 2024MY three-row CX-90 costs $37,845 but the 2025MY CX-70 costs $40,445. The electrified 2024 CX-90 starts at around $50k, while the CX-70 PHEV costs $54,400.
Unfortunately, digital auto content artists appear to want a fancier Mazda. The AutoYa info channel on UA-cam has unofficially imagined the CGI looks of the rumored Mazda CX-70 Coupe as a near-premium challenger to the BMW X6. What do you think?
