After driving a new Santa Fe hybrid and the CX-90, I know I'd prefer driving the CX-70. The Santa Fe may have been in eco mode, but it just felt unresponsive with the gas pedal, the suspension was firmer than I expected (but fine), the third row was pretty tight and the center console felt like it was going to creak/rattle in the future. The Mazdas are built more solidly and drive better.
The latest reliability data since 2022 has Mazda the equal of Lexus/Toyota and better than Subaru (or alas Mitsubishi). And all the Japanese brands (except Mitsu) are still rated higher than the South Korean Hyundai/Kia pair (but their own luxury brand, Genesis, is getting a bit better).

Just drove a CX-90, 3.3T preferred with 16k miles on odometer for about 2,000 miles. While it was a nice car, it needs To go to finishing school. Like others have noted the Santa Fe ICE DCT trans is questionable. Hit or miss. But their hybrid drivetrain is quite solid so far. Id suggest the hybrid model if you want the Santa Fe. Can easily average over 30mpg and it still has decent pep thanks to the turbo 1.6T and automatic transmission they use in the hybrid system. The CX-70 is also great and impressively efficient given its power. Owners average 25mpg which is great considering the car can do 0-60 in 6.5 seconds while carrying up to 7-8 passangers in the cx90 models. Only thing I wish Mazda did was make the CX-70 smaller and cheaper and the CX-90 more boxy at the rear end. I understand it uses a RWD architecture but its embarrassing the Santa Fe offers similar passanger space, cargo capacity, and performance for thousands less and while being almost 1ft shorter in length.

This really is “The battle no one asked for.” The Santa Fe and CX-70 are targeting different customers and the strong opinions in the comments makes that pretty clear. As always, this new gen Santa Fe is going to sell incredibly well because of how Hyundai has mastered marketing. They do a great job of appealing to what customers can see, which is why almost no manufacturers have been able to match Hyundai and Kia prices when it comes to tech/features, comfort, and futuristic designs. However, as evidenced by this new Santa Fe’s catastrophic transmission failures (non-hybrid models), shows that Hyundai often neglects the basic functions of a vehicle in favor of looks and fancy tech. The CX-70 on the other hand is far from perfect and it’s understandable why some people would prefer the Land Rover lookalike over Mazda’s original design. Due to the very recent release of the CX-70, the long term reliability is untested. The difference is that Mazda always starts by focusing on the engine/transmission, electrical system, safety, and handling. They don’t put tech and features above reliability and driving dynamics. It’s the reason Mazda has an incredible history of creating vehicles that appeal to driver enthusiasts, rather than people that just view their cars as a piece of technology.
I have been using Mazda 6 for more than 5 years and interior is top notch. It has stiches and it is as it was 5 years ago. I wouldn't doubt on Mazda interior quality.
No comparison at all just watching your video I’m loving the Mazda it looks better in and out and Mazda has a very reliable engine as good as the Toyotas.
The Hyundais interior may last longer, that's debateable. What good will that be on the shoulder of the road broken down? A one liter engine for a vehicle that big? Buy that and you're asking for problems.
It’s time for my wife to get a car. Once she finds out you can’t get a loaded Cx-70 with the 3.3T without a battery, she’s going to scratch it off her list. I like that car, very sad.
It's not even a contest. The Mazda is sooooo much nicer than that Hyundai. Unfortunately, of course, the Hyundai is still a Hyundai. You'll be needing that warranty.
Why not do a Calligraphy trim for the Santa Fe? That trim level is just as premium with better tech than the Mazda. And the exterior looks much better too.
It doesn't make sense comparing an Hybrid to an ICE car. Completely different buyers and use-case. Yes, hybrid buyers are prioritizing fuel economy, cost of ownership over performance, duh! Also, for a lot of buyers, usable cargo space does matter and is more important than luxury. I'm seriously so tired of a car industry and car reviewers who can only value performance and luxury as desirable features. This review was a complete waste of time.
Mazda CX70 is so much sleeker, with a much better interior. Santa Fe looks too utilitarian for my taste. I also don’t get the low positioned rear lights on Hyundai. It just looks out of place. The shocking part for both of these vehicles is the price, we’re talking $50K+ for a mid trim. Ouch!
SF wireless chargers are completely useless. Seats side busters are too high so if you are wide body, it will bother you. But it's super quiet inside, dual pane windows, soft suspension, tins of space inside, tons of storage ( more than other cars in the market). Btw, you can drive 74mph in electric mode in Hybrid version. I tried Mazda but its too small, too tight, no storage inside and too stiff. Looks like a BMW, so thats the positive
People: the mazda is permium. Well different trims do look fancier than others. It's a dated design inside and outside. The santa fe just looks odd because youre not use to the box shape, though I must say that the back on the outside looks unfinished in person. I'd say wait for hyundai to figure out their transmission before purchasing 1
Overall Mazda is better but finding comfortable position on driver seat for me was much easier and faster in Santa Fe. PS. Not easy choose frankly speaking because something catches in Santa Fe and same time something missed there definitely. PS2. Take Toyota Highlander instead of both😂

@@SamCarLegion I still wouldn't trust it. I'd rather take a chance on the all new Mazda powertrain instead.
I think both are fantastic and just as reliable. No doubt about that
@@302Mustang13The 1.6T hybrid system has had no major issues in the other products Hyundai/KIA stuffs it in.
Is there a problem with the 2.0t 280hp dct Santa fe ?@@SamCarLegion
Is the Hyundai really the competitor to the CX70? I would have thought the Genesis GX 70 would be a more logical contender.
I have been using Mazda 6 for more than 5 years and interior is top notch. It has stiches and it is as it was 5 years ago. I wouldn't doubt on Mazda interior quality.
I love the diversity. A wagon for those with taste and one for those who don’t have any!
It's not the back up camera, it's your lack of knowledge on how to use it correctly. But you know what they say about workmen and their tools...
I think you should compare the CX-70 with the RDX A-Spec. They are in the same price range, or the Lexus NX or RX.
Мазда это уже стиль и красота,хюндай как не смотри какаха
They aren’t cup holders in the rear of the CX-70. They repurposed the pockets by changing the design
How do you know?
@@SamCarLegion Because you can literally compare the inserts to those in the CX-90. They’re trays and not cup holders.
@@SamCarLegion Motormouth made the corrections on their Questions, Cars & Coffee #88 episode. They are actually trays
No comparison at all just watching your video I’m loving the Mazda it looks better in and out and Mazda has a very reliable engine as good as the Toyotas.
17:06: Love it when he says the Hyundai Santa Fe is not enjoyable....then the RAV4 pulls up ....lol
Sam,
The alcantara dash is only available in one color and that is on the highest trim. Easily avoidable.
Why no 3.3 diesel
😅😅 your descriptions are hilarious.
The Hyundais interior may last longer, that's debateable. What good will that be on the shoulder of the road broken down? A one liter engine for a vehicle that big? Buy that and you're asking for problems.
gear selectors on Hyundai / genesis are a big mistake. rotary is gone on landcover/jaguar
@@ThatGuy-kv1kw The gear selector has taken a while to get used to but I like having so much space in the center console area
@@tmac2705 it actually doesn't free up space, a small electronic gear selector, like In my alfa, the base does not. I know that was the selling point
That santa fe is too ugly
The battle I've been waiting for
Same cars are intersting for me, at the end i get the mazda in Germany as PHEV for a better price then the Santa Fe what only can pull 1To here
This is exactly the comparison I needed.....thought about trading in my 2019 Santa Fe for either one of these...thanks lol
You’re welcome
Nice!!! And the mazda ride quality??😮😮
Как всегда отличный обзор! Спасибо! Люблю смотреть Ваши обзоры.
I have de Tucson hybrid with that same engine, surely it’s short of power for that chasis
It’s time for my wife to get a car. Once she finds out you can’t get a loaded Cx-70 with the 3.3T without a battery, she’s going to scratch it off her list. I like that car, very sad.
Cx-90 fold the seat down
It's not even a contest. The Mazda is sooooo much nicer than that Hyundai. Unfortunately, of course, the Hyundai is still a Hyundai. You'll be needing that warranty.
Skip the Santa Fe D-clutch. I'd definitely take the Santa Fe Hybrid over the CX70.
Hell no
Same here!
Santa Fe
Why not do a Calligraphy trim for the Santa Fe? That trim level is just as premium with better tech than the Mazda. And the exterior looks much better too.
nope, santa fe isn't on the cx-70 level, outside more cargo space, and the infotainment system being largest, NOTHING about the santa fe compares
I really love the SANTA FE .. except the part where the transmission disintegrates 🤺..
Ouch!
you just sold me PHOIBOS WAVE MASTER ) looks really nice
Easy. Cx70. Sooo much classier all around better.
I thought the Mazda CX-90 (pardon, 90) has a 2.5 liter naturally aspirated engine.
It does in the PHEV
The turbo has an inline 6 cylinder, rwd
The Mazda is beautiful inside and out.
I like them both, but the Mazda be hard to keep up in the long run and I like the look of the Santa Fe
New Hyundai Santa Fe is a failure for some buyer because it looks urly from the trunk and its a 7 seaters , Santa Fe used to have 5 seaters
Overall Mazda is better but finding comfortable position on driver seat for me was much easier and faster in Santa Fe. PS. Not easy choose frankly speaking because something catches in Santa Fe and same time something missed there definitely. PS2. Take Toyota Highlander instead of both😂
Lmaooo yall are slow... 10 year 100k warranty engine and drivetrain
Like the Santa Fe in videos but once we saw one in the wild the rear looks odd - and not in a good way. But… same issue with the Mazda with its bubble butt. Oh well.
Who doesn't like a Bubble Butt?
South Africa should receive all new Hyundai Santa Fe Hyundai extended body douuble can ton bakkie Kia Tasman Mazda CX-50 CX-70 CX-80 & CX-90 Ford Explorer Mustang Mach E & Bronco with in the next few years Australia get plenty of brands & models thick & fast .
Hyundai has best in class 3d camera for their cars. Probably this santa fe is not limited version. First 50 sec of video was idiotic if you see usability of 3 d camera
sushi is better than a kimchi😅
I love my new Santa Fe……
he is right...just a 90 with no 3rd row....check out car nuts review!
I like Santa 🎅
CX70 just for the driving dynamics alone
Santa Fe has the worst rear design in the world 🌎.
Too bad Mazda doesn’t have a three row version of the CX70 that could compare with the santa fe. Oh wait... it does...
We bought a MAZDA CX-60, and it has been a terrible experience. We’ve had problems every day. In just six months, we’ve had to bring it in for recalls and software resets five times. The value has already dropped by $10,000. Please don’t buy the CX-60. My wife spoke to the General Sales Manager, Robert, Mt Gravatt but there was no resolution. He was polite, but nothing was accomplished.
Hyundai spends all their money on wowing you foe the first 5 mins then they fall apart
Not true, you have absolutely no idea. My family owns 3 Hyundai products and over a total of 28 years of driving we've only had five minor issues. 9-year-old sonata, without any squeaks or rattles and the only thing that has failed is the cd player.
@@kenbaskin803the new ICE Santa Fes are eating transmissions like potato chips
That Hyundai is ugly
mazda over hyundai, i get the practical side, which for my family i would love, but man 5y and more ownership the hyundai is a ticking bomb. I got 3 hyundai since 2009, only problems i got, the worst issues i got from all cars brand i ever owned
I like the name Santa Claus better.
Santa Fe has had numerous transmission problems documented on UA-cam.
The hybrid is fine
"numerous" as in one case and it was a super early production unit
How many of them? Lies, just one case.
@@ALBA_809Mine was not early production model… and the transmission on mine failed also and had multiple electrical issues. Turns out I have to wait 6 months to get my Santa Fe back because there are a lot of Santa Fe suv’s having failing transmissions… but hey atleast Hyundai was nice enough to give me a Piece of shit Hyundai Accent while my Santa Fe sits in the shop for 6 months after only owning it for 11 months. Trading in that Piece of shit as soon as I get it back
Stop talking garbage, the GAS Santa Fe 8-Speed Transmission has had issues. It is a TOTALLY different transmission than the 6-speed one that is in the Hybrid, that has had no issues.
If you're going to make statements like that, do some homework and make sure they are clear and correct.
Can you say paid ad by Mazda! Too obvious!
