June 2001, I walk into a FYE music store before my shift at The Cheesecake Factory and they had like 20 or so albums up on the wall with headphones to listen to them before you buy. I see the new Tool album and think the cover art is bizarre yet cool. I toss on the headphones and listen to The Grudge as the album opener. I proceeded to stand there and listen to this whole song thinking it was the best fucking thing I ever heard. Their preceding Aenima album is great but this was just a whole different level of a different kind of awesomeness. I listened to the song 3 times since I couldn’t pause or rewind. I walked in late to my shift because of this song! After I made enough money in tips, I ran over to the store to buy it so it couldn’t sell out. I couldn’t stop listening to it over and over. One of the best songs ever in my humble opinion and I love watching others react to it imagining myself the first time I heard it in that FYE store in 2001. Great reaction!
I had a very similar story with a different band! When I was in middle school, I started taking drum lessons to improve faster. On our way to that place, we stopped by this CD warehouse. It was my first time hearing 3 Days Grace. I put on some headphones and cranked the first 3 songs (Burn, Just Like You and I Hate Everything About You). I was floored. It caused me to be late to my lessons because I couldn't get over it and asked my mom if I could do some extra chores if she bought it for me.
@@ThisReactiverse ahh yes, I almost forgot about CD Warehouse! Use to be great shuffling through the used bin to find some hidden gems. I remember people would burn live albums to CD and sell them to stores. I have some good Oasis concerts that can’t be found anywhere online.
@forgetaboutit1069 I used to make mixed CD' of Avenged Sevenfold, Three Days Grace and Bullet for My Valentine when I was in HS because I only had a cd player up until like Junior year 😆
Mine too, the day it came out, on mushrooms. I had to take ten minutes to settle down before I could even tell myself I was ready for the next song and unpause the disc.
Honestly I've watched so many Grudge and Tool reactions in general but your reaction to the end of the song (starting from the scream) is just so goddamn f'ing perfect. Like that is THE penultimate reaction to this song to me. This is what I feel everyone would have to go through when they listen to that part of the song. From the absolute disbelief about that scream to the entire face melting sequence. It's so on point to what I would describe someone reacting to this song would probably look like that I'd say this should be the stereotypical reaction. Thank you for granting us that surprisingly unique visual.
Ticks and leaches Great reaction. Just seen them 11/11. Danny is in his early 60s now. He’s still a beast. He was walking like a roofer after the show but behind the kit he’s still the best
Great reaction! Honestly, you could throw a dart at Tool's song catalog to pick the next song to react to. We would be happy with it. 😂😂😂 There are certain songs that should be played together, Parabol/Parabola are one.
Lateralus is next this is where we 'spiral out' its written around the Fibonacci sequence using a vocal pattern that mimics it and bring in time signature sequences that relate as well
If you do lateralus, I would love to see you do a breakdown of the specifics of the Fibonacci sequence right after to understand that one. It's quite complex as it relates to the sequence, but a great listen even if you don't bother with that (but you should). :)
Good to see you back, my man. Told ya this was gonna be awesome. Greatest album opener ever. Sounds like Danny almost takes flight in the last 30 seconds. That scream is 25 seconds long, btw. Next I would suggest Lateralus.
Indeed. This MIGHT be the greatest album of all time. THE GRUDGE is definitely the 1st track. It's definitely NOT Tool's bestest tune, however. If you take the songs out of context and just judge them individually? Well, PRISON SEX (or maybe LATERALUS itself) is still, to this day, their best song.
Great to see you back at it and also doing Tool. The artwork is by Alex Grey who is out of NYC and has a gallery that's worth the trip if you are ever there. I believe the scream is right around 25 sec which is nuts and must take a ton of breath control. I have seen him do it multiple times live so it's no BS/studio thing. They are beasts live and if you ever get the chance to go you should. I have my own theory as to what this song is about and who he is talking to, but I don't want to give you any spoilers. I would suggest Jambi and Vicarious as good ones for you to do next, though tbh you can't go wrong w/any of them. They do get progressively complex through their career. I tend to ease people into their most recent stuff slowly, but that may not apply to you since you are a musician. Keep up the good work.
Saturn comes back around every 29 years. We are all different. Aenima is my favorite of all time. This is pudding. But I did let some kids in the early 2000s listen and hooked
He’s talking about the theory of Saturn orbiting around the sun, in 3 life stages, with the first starting between 27 & 31, (so 29 being in the middle), 2nd around 58, the last around 87 - reflecting your growth in each chapter. What people refer to as “the scream” in this, is supposed to represent a purge, in that if you don’t rid yourself of whatever is holding you back, or that you’re not letting go of, you can’t evolve & move forward in a positive way. Hence the lyrics “Saturn comes BACK around” etc. & why the track is metaphorically called The Grudge. The 3x stages reflect youth/adulthood, 2nd is maturity, final return being wisdom. I saw them just before covid hit, & you could tell that scream was already putting strain on his voice since the FE tour started. Recently someone posted a clip from I think late ‘22, & it sounds so much healthier after having that time off. So it’s not just Danny, I think this is one of the hardest for all of them. Highly recommend the Rick Beato interview. MJK is notorious for being an a-hole & never saying much about Tool. Don’t know how Rick convinced him 😂 It only took 30 years. Rick did one with Danny too, such a normal, humble guy. He really has no idea he’s the GOAT.
YAAAAAAAAA..!!!! GREAT TUNE N REACTIONS… THE REASON NO ONE DOES LIKE THEM…. IS BECAUSE OF DANNY. IVE BEEN DRUMMING FOR FIFTY YEARS, HEARD N SEEN A LOT OF DRUMMERS. BUT NONE LIKE DANNY. ROCK ON MAN 👊🖖
I've been hugely enjoying your TOOL reactions and I love the fact that you catch the meanings. Please please do Parabol/Parabola. Since you're into the meaning, you'll be blown away. This two-part piece is my go-to for meditation and is incredibly life affirming. Keep doing what you're doing!

in case you dont know TooL's process, they music is complete before Maynard writes lyrics. hes the last instrument to lay down. its why his lyrics fit so well into their music.

Took me too long to truly appreciate this album but I dunno. It might be the greatest record ever recorded. Regardless of musical genre. TOOL rules.
The true masterpiece of Danny is Rosetta Stoned. You should listen to it with lost keys prior. Fuckin journey.
Descending NEEDS to be on your playlist
This may or not be Tools best song. It's definitely the 1st track on the greatest record ever produced bar none

Agreed 💯. BEST album in their discography ❤
Best drum outro in rock history
Love the Grudge as the last 30 seconds is where Tool gets as close as they ever get to losing the musicality and giving in to the chaos :))))))))
Best album opener ever period end of story. Not even a debate, just like the comment and move on people 😂
Maynard: Let go, let go, let goooo!
Me, a Capricorn: Yeah, I don't know about that...
Thank you for the reaction and welcome back!
Thanks for the nice video, i would make your camera bigger than the vid tho, since it's not a music video :)
Go Ænema next!
and yes that was a 28 second sustained scream from Maynard. absolutley fucking insane!
Even after all these years live in concert he does a solid 16 seconds

Songs are definitely open for interpretation but I take this one as letting go of any grudges you hold with anyone/anything, even yourself. Undertow is about addiction and abuse. Aenima is dealing with the real world and pain from the past and not really liking what you see. It ends the third eye being pried open. Lateralus is the spiritual awakening that lets the narrator so to speak, drop all those grudges and be at piece. In my opinion that is.
