I am an old-school fan, I follow F1 since mid 2000s, although I am 18yo, and I think that nowadays there are 2 types of fans: the old-school ones, that follow F1 before 2017 ,and the American-style ones, that follow F1 after LM acquisition
Including me, I had no real interest in F1 before, but DTS made me fall in love with it back when the show started in 2019 and I’ve watched the races religiously every weekend ever since

As an American I can confirm it was learning more about F1 that made me fall in love with the sport. And every time I watch an F1 race I learn a little more about the sport.
Same here lol, I know around 20 people who've been addicted to knowing more about F1, more than being addicted to F1 itself.
The more I watch F1, the less I like it. I'm IndyCar all the way, with my first race the `67 Indy 500.
I love what Liberty has done with the F1 UA-cam channel, and I think its importance cannot be overstated. I recall how abysmal F1's online presence back with Ecclestone's old ass running things. Now we get good highlights, radio comm compilations, driver interviews, Beyond the Grid shows, recaps of classic races, you name it. It for sure has to be driving a ton of engagement.

I’m a new American convert to F1…weirdly, I didn’t learn about F1 through DtS, but through the UA-cam algorithm while researching crashes (I’m a engineer in the aircraft industry). One of the suggestions that came up was the LeMans 1955 crash. I clicked on it, decided Hawthorne was totally to blame and researched his career which took me to F1. A full days’ worth of clicks later and many layers down the rabbit hole, I emerged an F1 fan! (More specifically, a Vettel and Verstappen fan)
Now my kids think someone has possessed me bc I’ve never been into mororsports before and now I’m absolutely hooked and yes, I watched DtS but only after I researched and learned the science side of the sport (where I usually begin with things). Now my mildly interested son and I have tickets to the US Grand Prix in October!
dude same, except it was Nurburgring 2007 for me. A fan cut highlights video made it into my recommendations randomly, and I've been hooked ever since. Drive to Survive is pretty sweet ngl, but I didn't hear about it until season 2 was about to launch.
Im not an F1 fan but respect open wheel racing like indy car and f1, and have researched crashes of F1 and saw a documentary about some crashes. I became a NASCAR fan when I saw Ford V Ferrari ( I Know, weird, cuz not even close to nascar ) because me and my brother got into racing after that and went to target and got nascar diecasts, and no i am a huge nascar fan
I always liked F1, but I only became addicted to F1 after 2018 Monaco GP, huge Vettel fan as well.
For me, I was just bored one Sunday and flipping through the channels on the TV when I came upon the 2018 Canadian GP. From there I was hooked and haven’t missed a race and qualifying since then. I watch some practice sessions depending how early they are. I’m now hooked in endurance racing like WEC and Le Mans lol. Going to my third USGP in Austin this October. See you there!

As an American I discovered F1 because I learned that Lando and a few of the other boys streamed. It fascinated me to think professional athletes actually semi regularly streamed given their obligations. Then the floodgates of memes, funny moments and best team radio messages later I’m hooked. There’s so much I missed out on but a lot still to enjoy. But damn what a time to pick up f1 this 2021 was insane and I’m ready for 2022.
Drive to Survive turned me into an F1 fan, including my wife! Watched my first full race last weekend from start to finish, 50 laps went quick. So many aspects of the sport and history that make it interesting.
Another issue is that most races are held in the afternoon in Europe, when most Americans are still asleep. Will be a hard ask to get people to get up that early.
Especially on the west coast. I have to wake up before 6AM to watch most races live, and on the weekends which are most peoples only days off.
I'm on the east coast, so the races are usually around 8-9 AM. Not too bad, plus it gets my ass up out of bed on the weekends lmao

The American network has aired F1 races on a delay. Meaning it will air about 10am in the west coast. . Just don't get on the web. When they race in Mexico City or Austin Tx. it's live in the USA.
When there’s a race early in the morning I just record it and watch it whenever I get the chance. Not as exciting as live but I don’t sacrifice any sleep
What I've liked about F1 is 2 hours of uninterrupted racing when watched live. I can watch the entire Monaco GP start to finish, later in the day watch the Indy 500 and get 2 minutes of commercials every 4 laps.

I am an American, dts didn’t get me into F1 it was actually one of the side videos on a video of Dan Wheldon’s fatal crash, yeah I got recommended a funniest team radios videos and the more I watched the more I ended up looking into this Formula 1 thing, yeah only 2 days later I got F1TV and watched the 2021 Imola GP needles to say I’m quite a fan nowadays
I have been an F1 fan(atic) since 1973, and I can only say that F1 has always been a great sport, regardless of how either Bernie Ecclestone or Liberty Media attempt to kill the goose that lays the golden egg, as they do from time to time. It is easy to see why Americans have never really taken to Formula One, and I think that America will need more than just one driver from the States to make it even passively interesting to more viewers. Americans are still very bucolic in their interests of anything European. Americans love football, not soccer, for example. Americans are intelligent enough to understand F1, but as a whole we still do not want to awaken at a very early hour to watch a live F1 race from Belgium or Bahrain either. The Liberty Media Group has their work cut out for them if they want to attract fans anywhere close to IndyCar viewer numbers as well. A real dichotomy in that America has everything it needs to be a real powerhouse in F1. We have the tracks, facilities, sponsors, and the nuts and bolts that is required to be successful in Formula One. Americans just do not possess the mindset and 'attitude' to be avid F1 fans from season to season. Just watch any sporting event on television and you will not see anything about F1, or if you do, it will be a ten second blurb at the end of a broadcast. I will continue to love Formula One mainly because of its history, its technical progress and its heady mix of speed, glamour the intoxicating sound from those marvelous engines. I have attended F1 races in Monaco, Italy, Germany, the U.K., Canada and Belgium and I can say that every race have been the greatest events of my life, period. I wish also that I could work for Liberty Media because I believe that if F1 were to be successful in America, Formula One's future would look a lot brighter.
Im just not sure how they overcome the time difference. Ive been into f1 for over 30 years, have insomnia and still find it hard to catch an event live. F1 tv is a huge help thankfully.
I actually like the early timing to watch it, once the race is over, I have the rest of the day to do other stuff.
Your travel itinerary suggests a problem with US interest. Not many US fans can realistically travel to all those countries to see an F1 event, but a fan in Tennessee might realistically manage to drive to Richmond or Talladega or Bristol or Atlanta to attend a NASCAR event. Relatability is the key if F1 is to net more US fans, and I don’t believe just having a US driver will accomplish that.
I actually love watching F1 races live on Sunday mornings (here in the US Eastern time zone).
We are parochial in our interests, but look at the growth in popularity among EPL and other major EUFA leagues with the advent of US-born stars. (Another great Sunday morning spectacle, btw...) Competitive American drivers will spur greater interest. Pato O'Ward and other Mexican-born drivers also could help drive growth among Hispanic/Latino audiences, much in the same way these demographics are making soccer a major spectator sport.
I don’t have a problem getting up early to watch a race or even practice. What I don’t like is the crappy British announcers that are so based that it is difficult to listen to.

Amazingly, in Canada many of us watch F1. I think it’s because of the Montreal Grand Prix and the success of the Villeneuves.
To be fair, there are also two Canadian drivers and the father of one of them is a team owner.
@@Rager_U Even before that Canadians have followed F1. I remember reading an article 5 years ago, before Stroll was involved, that F1 viewership in Canada was over 3 million. That's more viewers than Japan or Russia. It's because the Grand Prix every year, one of the oldest, occurring every year since 1967 (minus the two recent ones canceled by COVID). Of course the presence of Lawrence Stroll buying a team will likely only increase F1's presence in Canada, and it's gotten a lot of us excited as we now finally have a team.

@@MrDufDaddy you know I never really thought of it but there’s definitely a mix of both. Karting definitely has a big presence. I actually see more karting here than I do oval track off the highway when driving. Canada is a funny mix between Britain and America in a lot of ways. Obviously in racing as well.
@@MrChippinator it is definitely a factor since karting is more similar to F1 while dirt ovals would be more Nascar. Does NASCAR come to Canada at all? Been awhile since I've watched any NASCAR
I think leaving out the tire disaster at Indy speedway way is an important peace of information missed
If you like fast cars in general all you have to do is look at some onboard footage of F1 to realize how incredible this sport is. I was instantly mesmerized when I saw footage of Monaco 2012 onboards. The way the car, drivers, engineers, and all team personnel work together is so awesome. Once I got into f1 it almost instantly dethroned basketball as my favorite sport

My simracing setup doesn't have a screen (using only VR) and it is a big hassle to move everything to my desk. I would love to play the F1 games but I don't feel like buying a screen+stand just for that game or moving my setup every time. I hope they add VR to the next game.
I really wish there was a version of My Team Career Mode where you didn't have to actually drive the car. I am falling in love with F1 but I'm just not much for racing games. But as someone who loves simulation-style games getting to own and run an F1 Team just sounds so fascinating and FUN! Maybe a future game will have this option available...

As a US citizen I was introduced to F1 through sim racing :p I've learned so much more about the cars and the racing in the sim than I ever would have just watching it on TV
5:14 Their marketing strategy worked perfectly on me; I watched DTS then started watching races on ESPN for a year which was then converted into an F1TV sub. Impressive.
yeah that's the only good thing in DTS. I mean the whole show isn't special. They gave us useless information and fake drama. But yeah for new audience DTS is good, but for fans isn't.
Its interesting. I first got into racing be consuming free f1 media, but I then "discovered" Nascar and indycar, and the American drivers on American tracks was much more appealing, and I only pay attention to f1 at a glance

@@lavdoria510 As a regular fan I still get a lot of enjoyment from DTS. specially team principals, they mostly have very practiced responses for interviews and DTS shows a bit more of their personality (not that I think all of its genuine but is something different). cyril and guenther were just gold.

As someone that found F1 through UA-cam I have to say that social media and liberty media have done an incredible job increasing F1s online presence.
As an American, I personally love F1 from watching Top Gear UK while growing up. I wish we had Chevy, Ford, or Dodge join F1, we could do a rebrand of Haas, similar to BWT becoming Aston Martin. Plus, we could bring in drivers who "graduated" from Indy Car (not to say Indy is any less challenging than F1). Then it feels like there is more of a path for an American driver to rise through the ranks, since Indy has a strong platform to begin with. Surely, there will be plenty of issues, but I think that would be a good step forward. Also, the track in Miami is great and all, but I have a feeling Miami won't be very interesting based off of layout. Also, the local community not being thrilled with the idea isn't a great sign. People are going to fly in from all over, just as they've done for Austin, but if I was in Liberty Media, I would have mapped out where all the F1 fans are in the US then tried to get a track as close as possible to the population center of them. And no more tilke-dromes!

I think F1 need to find that perfect balance, everyone can see the changes that Liberty have brought about to appeal to the US market, later race starts, different race formats etc. But it is important that F1 doesn’t become too Americanised as that could have detrimental effects on the sport
As an American, the later race starts are a blessing, I can actually catch the races now it’s great

I'm an F1 fan and used to watch every race but I recently moved to the US and the biggest issue I faced was the timezone difference. I love the sport but I won't skip classes @ 8 AM to watch a race

I thought it a little disingenuous not explain why they were booing - only six cars started the race that year due to a Michelin tire problem.

as an American, I think part of the reason it's so hard to capture us, is because we already have these huge races (Indy 500, Daytona, Etc) that are distinctly American. And as many of u know, Americans don't like non American things.
I will say tho, as a younger guy who's into f1, there's TONS of young people that talk about and are into f1, it's slowly growing here.

I've been watching F1 since 2009 and tbh if it wasn't for my family liking it, I probably wouldn't have got so hooked. Until 2019 I enjoyed it and kept up with most of the races, but after my friends suddenly started liking it in 2020 I went back to the same spirit I had 10 years ago! I can't miss a race!
I've fallen in love with F1 the past year, hopefully more people start watching, they're missing out!

I think you're overplaying the popularity of IndyCar in the US. The split in the 90s destroyed the fanbase, which is only now increasing (partly thanks to former F1 drivers Roman Grosjean and Fernando Alonso's Indy 500 attempts), but the main motorsport behemoth is NASCAR, which itself is on a downward spiral, from which it is struggling to recover.
NASCAR has actually started growing again, it’s the only sport in the us that is seeing an increase in viewership at the koment

@@bruh_im_a_pigeon5597 actually IndyCar has seen more growth the last 2 or 3 years than NASCAR, but they were starting from a much lower point than NASCAR ever was. NASCAR still hits 2-3 million viewers regularly, while IndyCar is really lucky to get 900k

The presentation of F1 has improved a lot the past few years. The camera work and angles have dramatically improved. It's also great that we hear a lot more radio broadcasts, not too long ago and there were none.
As an American, I find the technology in the F1 cars amazing. It is what first drew me to the series, and watching them compete is awesome. I wish there were more races here state side.

I've been a F1 fan my entire life. Some of my earliest memories were of Emo Fittipaldi and Jackie Stewart (for years the latter driver had his face on the Aurora AF/X box.) It's great to see ESPN simulcasting Sky's terrific coverage. Drive to Survive is engaging, too, if not a bit too "reality TV"-like in how it presents the rivalries between drivers and team honchos.
But what kind of leaves me cold is how big an element tire strategy plays in the outcome of races. It wasn't always like this, was it? Or am I just getting a closer view of it via on-air driver comms and more focus placed on the teams supporting the drivers? I know the tires are meant to degrade as a way of restoring grip lost to the death of ground effects, but all it makes me think is, "I ain't never gonna ride on anything with Pirellis."
Without slagging me, what am I missing? Why is tire strategy good for fans of the sport?
Idk, I was kinda really enjoying the European vibe of the sport. I feel like every time when the US gets involved into anything, the try to make it about themselves. Don’t want the americanisation happen to F1
Don't worry, it will never happen. I've been following motor sports since the 70's, and it seems every 10-12 years there's a big push to sell F1 in the US. You hear of all kinds of plans, you see a bunch of charts showing marginal improvement, then it fizzles and you don't hear of it for another 10 years. There's a quote on this video that is made to sound optimistic, that F1TV will have 250K followers by 2027, 6 years from now. 250K followers in a country of 320 Million people is a pretty low level of success.
Another case of an insecure European. When Americans are shown respect or targeted as a place for a sport to grow people bitch and moan about how we're going to "Americanize it". And then if it doesn't catch on it's because it's "beyond" Americans. If we Americanized F1 maybe it would've been more competitive in the last few years like IndyCar. Don't be mad that people want to target one the largest and most influential countries on Earth with a rich motorsports history. Be more concerned about the 2026 North Korean GP. Sincerely, a long-time Merican motorsports fan.

There's no chance for F1 to become Americanized anyway because Americans will never be in the sport in big numbers. Even if the almost impossible happens and an American driver gets into F1 and is successful enough to the point where he wins a couple of races and gets onto the podium on occasion (and I don't think this will ever happen), it's still only one guy. And, likely, that guy will have moved to Europe as a youngster and will actually be more European than American, like Eddie Cheever. An example is MotoGP, where Americans have had a good deal of success over the years, certainly more than they ever had in F1, but it was always one or two guys at most at any one time, and the series never became Americanized.

As an American F1 fan, it's been lonely for a long while, but I've seen interest grow slightly over the last 2 years.
When I first got into F1 through top gear in 2016, there was no aside from one of my friends watching. Compared to now in 2021 it feels like most of my friends watch it and most people I know are at least aware of it.

I started watching in 2013 and knew no one that liked it. I had to pirate Sky streams to watch it. Now it’s on espn with a Netflix show and a huge social media presence. It’s great.
Greetings from California. Two years ago, I could not name one F1 racer, didn't watch any races...but, I did enjoy Ron Howards movie about James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Then, in 2020, I started watching Drive to Survive, and now, I'm hooked. My F1 knowledge is 10x what it was. I believe its because the backstory of the racers and the humanity of the sport was brought to the foreground. I will watch whether there is an American driver or not.
Excellent episode, very informative!! As a kid growing up in Canada Gilles Villeneuve was a huge draw to become interested in a sport that has turned out to be a lifetime interest !!!
It might have been good for some context as to why the 2005 US GP there was so much booing. Before the 2021 Belgium GP it was considered to be the worst F1 race of all time because most of the grid decided to forfeit the race for safety reasons.

I want to say thank you for what you've contributed to the sporting scene, because it's helped me immensely in finding my roots again, after endless years of identity difficulties. These uploads and watching the Tokyo Olympics were remedy.
The instrumental at the end of the videos, compliments the glory of this channels achievements.
The main problem that was not mentioned in this video is how the feeder series system is what really stops Americans from being successful in F1, climbing through the ranks and driving in Formula 4-3-2 pretty much requires all drivers to move to Europe at the age of 14-15. Aspiring talents are becoming younger and younger and the price to drive in these feeder series is high because the drivers personal backers be it family wealth or different teams driver academies is required to even compete.
The superlicense system (essentially driving license for a formula 1 car) requires a driver to succeed in f1s feeders series and don’t heavily weigh American series. The only Indycar drivers that qualify is those that already have success there and moving to F1 they will not be at the sharp end of the grid
If 2 Canadians can make it into the current line-up, why can't the Americans do it aswell ? I'm sure there are families in the USA wealthier than the Latifis and Strolls. All they need to have are young drivers interested in the sport willing to make that sacrifice of moving abroad like Nicholas Latifi and Lance Stroll.
@@joel4366 difference is that those 2 Canadians went for formula 1 from the beginning by driving in Europe, must aspiring Americans race in the US and have a much more direct path to Indycar, Canada has had a lot more success in F1 since the late 70s than the US so it has remained more popular in Canada relative to the population compared to the US

Not only IndyCar, but NASCAR. Not only is money important, but also personal connections. An interesting case is Austin Cindric, whose father Tim runs Penske's IndyCar team. Tim CIndric is as connected a guy as there is in American motor sport and either he pushed his kid, or his kid chose to drive in NASCAR.
Now if you're Lance Stroll, your father has billions of dollars, you can do what you want. In US racing, I can think of only one driver whose dad was a billionaire-Paul Menard, and he also chose to drive in NASCAR.

I never understood the disdain by Europeans for ovals. The entire point is so you turn as little as possible so the cars can go as fast as possible. Its different than road and street courses but it not inferior
@@NA.NA.. Most people find F1 so entertaining not just cause of the high speeds, but the hard braking and instant acceleration that cars do during the race.

Why? Because this allows opportunities for drivers to show who's the best while overtaking, there's a lot of skill and manoeuvring that goes into it in f1.

American here. Got into it by watching the Top Gear episode where Richard Hammond tried to drive the Renault R25. I respected what it took to operate those machines and the sounds they made were amazing.
As an American, I'd say the races generally start very early in the morning which can hinder the casual viewer's desire to watch

I ordinary finish to watch Nascar 1-3 a.m local time, after that I wake for a work. Time isn't big problem for a real fan.

@@girlboss3426 CASUAL! as in hardcore fans don't care, but most Americans do not watch F1 as it is so of course obviously the dedicated American fans will make the effort regardless of time, however, F1 will not gain casual viewers if they have to wake up early, especially on a Saturday night / Sunday morning
as an American, I have been trying to get into f1 since 2019 and I think that the miami track next to my house will be helpful

Honestly, I was watching Nascar, and thought it would be cool to watch other motorsports. So, I tried out watching some F1 races, and even have F1 2021 on my PC, and a Wheel to go with it. It is super fun to play, and super fun to watch it on TV if I am up early enough to watch it.
I started watching F1 (all sessions) in 2019 after previously watching what I could with my dad in the 80s. I stay up late and started catching FP sessions on ESPN and got hooked. I didn’t even know about drive to survive until I was already well hooked on F1. It’s SO much easier to watch now with F1TV too. I just wait until I get up and watch the replay of practice sessions, qualifying and the race.
Man your videos are so well researched, edited and spoken. This is one of my favorite channels. Keep it up, I really dig it!

I’m an American and I gotta say, I’m glad I watched dts when it came out. My first race I ever watched was Baku 2019 and I fell in love with F1. Before this I didn’t really have a sport I really had passion for. I’m probably the only one in my town who watches f1 lol
one thing that would be a pain to "fix or change" are race start times, as someone living in North America it's not that fun waking up at 6 am to watch a race

What do you mean? I get maybe for the west coast, but most races are on at 8 or 9 for CT and EST. That's perfect, especially during football season as is doesn't share time with any games.

@@BrandoMan Exactly, lights out time for F1 in the US on Sunday is perfect during the NFL season. Coffee & breakfast during that Sunday's GP, followed by F1 post race shows & streams, followed be pre-game NFL shows, then NFL games for the rest of the day. Happy viewing days for me.
About Verstappen and Zandvoort; there is now so much coverage in Dutch media about the GP. Not just in the sport selection of Dutch news-websites but also as main news story of the day. It is great to see so much attention here. Can't wait for this weekend!
Sim racing is what really turned me into a motorsport fan. Due to the high cost of participation most people never get a chance to actually try any motorsports. Sim racing allowed me to understand racing in an entirely different way that one can through only watching races on TV. With a VR headset and a good wheel and pedals it really does feel like you are sitting in the car driving it (minus the gforces). Between UA-cam and Sim Racing I was able to learn so much about motorsports and racing. Which really allowed me to appreciate races in an entirely different way. It's one thing to watch the 24 hours of SPA, Le Mans or the Nurburgring. But you can understand the race completely differently when you've driven all of those tracks in GT3, LMP1 and other types of racecars. When you know the tracks by heart, down to the individual bumps. Not only do you have a better understanding of race strategy but you can actually appreciate and comprehend how insanely good these Pro drivers are.
As an American F1 fan, the biggest improvement I can see for getting Americans to watch F1 is re-running the race at a better time. For me on the west US, over 75% of the races on the calendar start airing between the hours of 2-6am. If liberty got ESPN to run it again at least in the pm, I believe there would be significant improvement in viewership. America already loves racing with series like NASCAR and Indycar being hosted in our own backyards. Couple a better run time getting more attention to F1 with an American F1 driver keeping them engaged enough to learn more about the sport, I feel like the number of American F1 fans would grow exponentially.

I’d love to tune in but the races always came on super early in the morning. I eventually gave up on trying to follow any stories or catch any races. And it totally helps that literally nobody else in any of my circles follow the sport.
I have never even watched a single episode of DTS and i don't have a problem with the people that do watch it. The F1 youtube channel is what got me interested in the sport.

I mean, the 2005 US GP's audience spent most of the race booing because only 6/20 of the cars actually raced that day. I'd boo too, if I paid to watch Ferrari thrash 2 now-defunct teams (who also finished dead least in the 2005 season).
Just getting a US driver also won't be enough. The driver needs to be near the front of the field, competing for wins at least some of the time. Here's an example - Rio Haryanto was the first Indonesian F1 driver. And when he first joined the grid, there was an uptick in interest & viewership in Indonesia. But he was always at the back of the grid, barely (if ever) scoring points. Interest died down pretty quickly after that. Kubica, despite his second return in a crap Williams, is a bit of an edge case for Poland - he was arguably one of the best drivers in F1 before his rally accident removed him from the scene, so his return to F1 making waves in Poland makes sense.
What that means is that the US driver's gonna need to get picked up by one of the 'top' F1 teams - prior to last year, that'd have been Merc, Ferrari and Red Bull. In the current season it's just Merc and Red Bull. That's 4 seats, out of 20. Otherwise your odds of winning a race are basically nonexistent (reliant on the top teams having a bad race).
In comparison, in Indycar the playing field is much more even. It's not quite a stock series (everyone races the same cars), but a lot of the Indycar racecars use the same components from Dallara. In the last 13 Indycar races (2021 season), there have been 9 different race winners. In the last 11 F1 races, there have been 4 different ones (and Ocon's was basically the result of the top teams wiping each other out). Skill simply matters more in Indycar than Engineering.
I don't doubt an American driver would jump at the chance of racing for one of the top F1 teams, where they've got a chance of winning races. I do doubt any top US driver would want to race for a team whose idea of a good race weekend is scoring a point - and those are the teams that will recruit 'unproven' drivers (unproven in F1, that is). Ultimately, why risk it when an Indycar seat is much more achievable and convenient, and where the chance of a race-winning seat is more easily found?
@@G.D.goodwill I chose Indy because it's open-wheel like F1 (NASCAR is bigger, but it's arguably in a different category of racing).
I also agree with your points, but would like to throw in additional reasons.
On young drivers - it's actually even worse for American teens who want to join F1. The junior formula series that get a lot of attention from F1 teams are usually in Europe (British, Italian and ADAC). That means at the ages of 14 or so, they'll need to basically live full-time in Europe. That's both expensive and difficult to justify, especially when feeder series for Indy and NASCAR already exist in the US.
Another factor I'd throw in for why it's difficult for American (and this actually applies to most countries outside of Europe too) drivers to break in: patronage networks. It's fair to say that racing is a pretty dynastic sport - a lot of drivers' parents are drivers as well. This applies both in the US and Europe, but I think it's fair to say that Andretti had a lot more connections in the US' motorsport scene, so it made sense that his kids would race there, just as Schumacher had a lot of connections in the European one (thus making it a logical pathway for his kid).
You've already pointed out that money is a major barrier to entry for F1 drivers, and to add to that... Perez, Latifi and Stroll prove that - I don't think it's a coincidence that all 3 North American drivers are related and/or funded by a billionaire.
@@awijaya2116 I’d like to point that Perez won the Slim family over with persistence. He really wanted a chance. I think that plays out a bit different than having the money or just knowing people with money. He bet his whole childhood on his talent and won. I’m not sure what Gutierrez’s (Mexican and Mercedes back up driver) story is but I’m interested in finding out. I do hope to see Pato O’ward in McLaren next year!

I became a fan by playing Gran Turismo sport and using F1 cars in the game. My friend and I then decided to pick up F1 2020 and we fell in love with the sport. I'm a Sharl fan now.
Having your national driver sure helps. I'm french and started watching Indycar this year because of Grosjean (Well, there was already Pagenaud and Bourdais, idk why I didn't watch), and I'm loving this series. However, I wish there was a service like F1TV for Indycar (does it exist? I would like to know), I absolutely despise these commercials every 5 laps! I would like to see more Indycar tech analysis videos and interviews with the drivers, because I heard the atmosphere between the drivers is amazing
That’s exactly why I can hardly watch IndyCar.. the commercials are obnoxious. I pay for F1TV and do so happily, with zero commercials.
We have to wake up pretty early on sundays, we got NASCAR and Indycar, and people think Hamilton is making it boring. Plus we have so many domestic sports that for many Americans they don’t care about foreign sports

Yep, its no mystery at all as to why F1 never really took off in America. 1 or 2 F1 races versus a full season of Indy and NASCAR.
Americans like watching winners. So not only would we need an American driver, but an American driver in a competitive car, which is much harder to pull off. We need our own Max Verstappen to get Americans interested in F1. Drive to Survive has done great so far with gaining interests, but seeing an American driver constantly in headlines (for the right reasons lol) is what will gain the most support.
as a canadian, Lance Stroll and The Netflix series got me into F1 lol. Seeing 2 Canadians on the grid made me more interested in it, plus the game too.

as an american that got interested in f1 thru drive to survive and subscribed to f1tv directly after, I can confirm their strategy is pretty great lol. especially with the introduction of the new ruleset that seems to have mixed everything up, there seems like there is going to be a lot more interesting battles now
Would not the time the races are held be a factor as well? Most of the races start at 9 AM in the east and 6 AM in the pacific states. A few years ago it started one hour earlier, 8 AM and 5 AM respectively.
I've been watching F1 since 2008, more than 10 years now, and I will say that I'm glad that I didn't discover F1 due to DTS or something like that. Even though I get why DTS exists and it's objective I can't really see myself watching, it's just full of unrealistic drama and doesn't represent what F1 is. For me the most important step to make F1 more accessible is to stop the exclusivity TV deal with Sky Sports and make F1TV the platform to watch F1, I know that in many countries it works like that but for example here in Germany F1TV is basically useless because of Sky.

I'm involved in and follow a variety of motorsports and have many friends who do the same. I doubt I know anyone else who has F1 in their top ten motorsports that they follow. It's crazy how obscure it is here in the US.
Drive to survive made me a fan though, i travelled to singapore for the race in 2019 and even spent tidy sum on merchandise
