A clarification mate, Ferrari and McLaren started building cars in order to fund their racing teams. Selling cars was always a secondary objective for Enzo Ferrari and Bruce McLaren. They wanted money to create the FASTEST cars on the grid. Mercedes and Renault/Alpine on the other hand want to advertise their road cars through f1

@@SIRTACONATOR007 when Alonso was signed by Mclaren at the end of 2005 to race for them in 2007, Kimi decided to move teams rather than stay, that opened the door for Hamilton's debut in the second Mclaren in 07. And he was originally going to replace Massa at Ferrari, but since Montezemelo (Ferrari's president) at the time had a feud with Schumacher, he didn't guarantee the N°1 status Schumacher had at the team, so he decided to quit F1 rather than fight an intra-team battle. You could also argue Kimi quitting F1 in 2009 left a weaker Ferrari to fight Red Bull in the blown diffuser era.

It’s amazing how this young guy from Finland with only 23 races to his name got called up to Formula 1 by Peter Sauber all that while having pressure from Big Red Bull Money. Most team principals these days would cave in and go for the cash. So massive props to Peter Sauber for fighting for giving Kimi the seat and thereby giving us the last Ferrari world champion and an absolute legend of the sport. And also props to Mateschitz as well for his brazen attitude that has given us Vettel, the youngest WDC in history and one of the greats in the sport and of course all of the RBR academy drivers who have graced F1. One thing I wish you had mentioned: aside from owning not one, but TWO Formula One teams, Red Bull also owns the Red Bull Ring, a racetrack in Austria where F1 and MotoGP hold their annual Austrian Grand Prix races.
During 2020, while many tracks and promoters were unable to hold races because they couldn’t sell tickets, the Red Bull Ring held two races for Formula One and two races for MotoGP, because they had enough money to hold races without fans and not risk bankrupting the circuit.
Oddly enough, Alexander Albon, the first Thai F1 driver, almost got his first podium driving for Red Bull at the Red Bull Ring in 2020, until Lewis Hamilton crashed into him. That would have been very cool to see, considering the Thai-Austrian roots of Red Bull.

The timing of the budget caps plays a big part in Red Bull being able to build their own engine. That $160M/yr they were putting into the race team was when the team was spending close to $400M/yr. With a budget cap of $135M in 2022. That leaves a lot of money on the table to do other things with. Without the budget caps, Red Bull would be nuts to try this.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but the reality is this - Kimi had a really impressive rookie season in that Sauber car and the rest is history, while Bernoldi had two really mediocre seasons with the struggling Arrows team, which went bust halfway through the 2002 season. In fact, Red Bull had more drivers that failed misreably in F1 (like Christian Klien and Scott Speed) than drivers that succeeded or having respectable F1 careers. Out of all drivers in the 2021 Formula One World Championship, 6 drivers owe their careers thanks to Red Bull's programme - Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly, Yuki Tsunoda, Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz Jr. (though Sergio Perez is currently driver for Red Bull Racing, his career was supported by Carlos Slim and his Mexican telecommunications companies)

Honda got him in that Alfa Tauri through their collaboration with Red Bull. Sainz, the son of a world rally champion, would always have had the chance and backing to make it into Formula 1 even without Red Bull. One other thing to note on this, along with stuff others have mentioned, is that the new cost cap introduced to F1 means a lot of teams need to restructure their personnel and operations. This cost cap has freed up a lot of money for Red Bull, which means they can take on engine design and manufacture. So, it's not just about turning the company into a technology company.
And, they won't be designing their own engine from scratch. They'll be using the existing Honda engine and making improvements to it. Honda are also staying on in an advisory capacity as well.

Great video. I wish you could have gone into a bit more detail on why Red Bull have a second F1 team. While I can see some sporting sense in that they can rotate drivers and give them more of a real life trial in F1, I assume the costs are quite high. I could never quite understand why they made this investment; especially at the time before this newer idea of developing a car technology company.

In one of your videos you commented that f1 canceled a contract with NBC. She did the same thing here in Brazil gave up a contract of +20 million dollars with Globo one of the 3 largest TV in the world, with 115 million of the 495 million 23% of the total so the audience fell from 2020 to 2021.
The reason was the non-agreement on F1 Pro, currently in the Band which has an audience of 4 Pts average vs 15/16 Pts globo. But this was very positive because the Band delivers much larger broadcasts with Qualifying and Gps broadcasts from the USA and Mexico on open TV and most importantly showing the podium ceremony something that fans always complained about.
In addition to providing space for drivers and team bosses even the president of F1 Stefano Domenicali to aperecer in the Pre race at the São Paulo Grand Prix for the whole of Brazil. In addition to a great novelty a deal with Gaules a streamer of Twitch one of the 5 largest in the world to show the live race that reached 100,000 people.
I don't speak English, i'm sorry if it got bad.

We're all so used to RB's presence in F1 at this point, but it's still crazy to think about. A god dang energy drink company pour ~$180 million/year to go racing in top flight motorsport. I too was super surprised when they announced they were spinning up their own powertrain division. That is NOT a small or easy investment, considering only 4 other companies in the world are willing to do so, and one of them is leaving!

McLaren(started selling road cars afterwards), Williams, Haas, Sauber (now named sponsored by alfa romeo), Alpha Tauri and RedBull are teams that began solely as F1 teams. It's rather the trend than the exception. Maybe even Ferrari started their F1 team before selling roadcars but of that I'm not sure

Regarding the exposure, the manufacturer of the engine is also shown on TV, and in the name of the team. So, Red Bull is Red Bull Honda, Mclaren Mercedes, Williams Mercedes, so if Red Bull do decide to carry on with the engines, and eventually sell them to customer teams, we might see teams like Haas Red Bull team, Aston Martin Red Bull team, so it's also a form od advertisement.

It was David Coulthard who won that first Red Bull podium and, since the team was sponsored by "Superman: The Movie" for that race in Monaco, he stepped up in the podium with a Superman cape (this also explains Horner's colorful attire in that clip).

Haven't watched beyond the first sentence yet, which is technically wrong. Red Bull isn't the only team not owned by a manufacturer. There is also Haas and Williams, and in the past there were countless others. Until this year, Aston Martin used to be Force India and Sauber is only partnered with Alfa Romeo, not owned by them. There's also the Red Bull sister team, AlphaTauri... so about half the grid actually

The Valkyrie was as a result of Aston Martin having a stake in the team, and they don't necessarily supply engines. It's literally the Honda engine without the name, and there's an engine freeze meaning no engines can make major developments. Its not quite the same thing.
However that, I must say, is some beautiful editing. You should look at some of the other odd companies-turned-f1 teams. Bennetton clothing or Haas CNC machines. Cool vid
