Fun Fact: During the early 90s Peter Windsor got embroiled in the failing Brabham F1 team and even attempted to sell it to Greg Norman (the golfer) at one stage but the deals all fell through. Brabham passed from owner to owner like a football and at one point when leaving the Williams factory he was kidnapped by some henchmen of the previous owner whom he'd believed Windsor owed him money and was placed in the back of a van and beaten with a baseball bat before being kicked into a ditch. Windsor is a hard nut.

Also worth remembering that this meant Sauber could re/enter for 2010. As before this BMW leaving and the 4 new teams meant there was no space for them. USF1 failing allowed Sauber to re/enter and they were accepted, but it wasn’t a given for a few weeks. Alfa Romeo and Audi’s new home wouldn’t be here if these guys succeeded!

It's probably easier and smarter to do that than to try to build an engine from scratch with someone like Ford or GM, while having to build the car and run the team for the first year
This whole Andretti saga is probably worth another video, I'm assuming that's why they weren't mentioned. It's a bit sad that the teams (especially Toto Wolff) have been trying to block them, even after they were willing to pay the astronomical entry fees, and seem to be serious about it.
@@456MrPeople they do but f1 is a different ball game. FE and Indycar are mostly spec series. And with out their own engine they would be a customer team most likely taking Renault engine. They would do fine but they wouldn’t be championship contenders. And that’s what f1 wants, a engine manufacturer that might be able to shake up the grid and compete with the big three.
@@rexthewolf3149 S'true. Building a car for Formula 1 is _massively_ different to almost any other form of motorsport outside of LMP1. In Indycar, F2, F3, FE, etc. you just buy most or all of your parts in. The amount of specialists, special facilities, research and co-ordination that even the least of the current F1 teams uses dwarfs the operation of even the biggest Indy and Formula E teams.
Nice memories, Josh. Almost decade and half ago, to be honest... You know, if you have done about this, why not do it on the other teams that entered on F1 on that year and their metamorfosis, like Campos/Hispania/HRT, Lotus/Caterham and Virgin/Manor/Marussia? I think it would be fun and memorable. I think.
I mean it seemed like they were more focused on changing the former Joe Gibbs Racing race shop over to F1 than actually building a car (even though I'm positive that Joe Gibbs Racing could have built an F1 car in that building, they could probably do it in their current building) Edit: although you can't blame USF1 for wanting a secondary base in Europe, and I always hated how the FIA forced Cosworth engines on the teams that entered in 2010... Also of course Burnie could tell that something was up as the man owned Brabham, he's seen it all
One of the more alarming details was how Ken Anderson put his questionably competent son as his second-of-command and Jr insisted he had to approve or veto _every single technical drawing and design personally._ Even Adrian Newey would balk at such a notion and that man knows F1 cars better than F1 cars know themselves. Consider that literally thousands of these can be produced in the planning of an F1 car and then imagine just how much that slowed things down. It's less of a bottleneck and more anaphylaxis. Moreover, Anderson Jr. would apparently often just... change details on the car's design on a whim and just expect everyone to adapt to it. Some former staff have told stories of how they'd come in in the morning and find Junior had just arbitrarily changed something without warning and that all the work _they'd_ been doing was suddenly useless as a result. Doubly bizarre considering the general reaction of the F1 community to the published CAD model of the car was, "It's a bit... basic, isn't it?" In the end the most of the car that was ever produced was a mock-up tub and front wing pieces IIRC.
Another issue that difficults getting an USF1 style team is talent acquisition and experience. IndyCar is the most similar to F1 that there is in the USA and still is a whole another beast with limited knowledge base transferrable to F1, mostly because no major series in the US requires teams to design and manufacture their cars (There are some factory teams out there in IMSA and things like that but those are a rarity, not the norm), so you'd need to bring people from F1 to your base of operations and I bet not enough people with experience in F1 are willing to move and set shop in the USA since most will be people that are already settled with families and social lives and all. Like sure, young engineers with nothing to lose and the F1 dream? Sure. But good luck poaching higher ups from the rest of the teams.

They really need to allow Andretti to own his own team. He wanted to have clearance 2 years before the debut season and the team has basically everything set up. With the FIA putting 3 US GPs on the schedule it’s time for a new attempt at an American team (That’s not Haas) and Andretti is probably the best option
I understand Stefan gp didn't have much credit personal wise, but being the team that bought the assets of the Toyota team, they should've been one of the entrants.
Who's here after MBS said "I have asked my @FIA team to look at launching an Expressions of Interest process for prospective new teams for the FIA @F1 World Championship"
I was so excited when USF1 announce they would bring an American team to F1. I even went to their shop to see if it was for real. It was there and they were working, but sadly they never made it to the grid. It sucks HAAS doesn't have an American driver yet and they are inconsistent, but I am thankful there is an American team competing. Hopefully, Andretti makes it in next!
As one of USF1’s first employees I just wanted to say this piece is pretty close to 100% accurate which is a very rare thing when telling this bizarre story. Bravo
I remember Manor/Virgin with their zero wind tunnel and too small of fuel tank car. 1Malaysia F1> Lotus> Caterham and their struggles and HRT using one car design for the whole year
Considering the amount and quality of racing innovation, pedigree of drivers, history and experience coming out of the best of America, it's a crying shame. Penske and Andretti could and should easily be there, but at the same time in today's world, no one can truly sustain themselves completely alone and fully reliant on only themselves. So a team that's American enough is what we should be happy with.
Breaking update to the story: the Argentine official (and expressident) that was trying to finance the whole Jose Maria Lopez thing just got sentenced to 6 years in prison for money laundering and corruption
The whole process in bringing in new teams was flawed. Apart from the obvious backing down on the cost cap that the FIA managed to do, all four teams were rushed and poorly managed. You only have to look at the amount of name changes the three that made it did before they even started their first weekend. USF1 though was on another level. Run by basically the most incompetent management you could ask for, and built on a steady stream of lies, it was always doomed to fail. People can bag on HRT, Virgin and Lotus all they want, but at least they made it and lasted a few years. The biggest problem all of the teams had were the fact it was a different era to the 1980s and 1990s when pretty much anyone could rock up with a car designed on the back of a cigarette pack and try to race. The budgets were even bigger, the regulations even stricter and the teams already there took things a lot more serious (hence their fight against the budget cap). None of the teams that were given entry would have got out of the pre-quali sessions of years gone by. USF1 for all their faults, lies and even more lies, were hardly the worse offenders in this debacle. That glory rests solely at the feet of the FIA and FOM who never should have opened the doors to such mediocrity in the first place, without a significantly better plan in place.
Yes. With the battlements that have been built around the entrenched F-1 teams, the scuttling of Andretti F-1 has made it clear F-1 doesn't really want a US team, just USD.

Andretti seem to be able to make it viable and possible because they have positive cash flow from other sources that could help fund it and off-set the cost. Andretti doesnt care about making money, they care about racing. Most North American owners care about making money.
@@Amm17ar Andretti plus GM or Ford. I just checked it on Wikipedia they partner with Cadillac (GM) to maybe rebrand engine from Alpine/Renault.
@@mateuszzimon8216 Yeah, I saw that a while ago. Hopefully F1 and the FIA as a whole put aside their Andretti hatred and figure out how to make it happen. I know Audi and Porshe are both looking to enter too, and to be honest, I think theyll get priority because RedBull is partnering with Ford. Theyll have their fix of a big American brand in Ford to fuel their obesession with America and I dont know if 3 new teams are viable. 24 cars seems doable, maybe one of Audi or Porshe buys Alpha Tauri or Alfa Romeo/Alpine (though I dont think Alpine is going anywhere based on what Ive read, you might know something I dont though forsure) I just think 22/24 cars is the most theyll allow and I think Andretti might have to wait a bit longer or wait for a team to sell to force their way in. I dont think F1 is going to easily or willingly give Andretti a team anytime soon. Id be happy to be wrong though.
He was also a passenger in the car with Frank Williams in the crash that broke Frank's neck.
You really need to cover Stefan GP sometimes in a future. I remember how excited I was when I heard the news that there will be team from my country in F1, that they are entering with big ambitions and that they will bring Villeneuve back from retirement. And than all news just stopped and it was never mentioned ever again. Truly a bummer, ngl.
I thought Sauber were allowed back in once Toyota pulled out of F1.
They did not fail, they Just merely failed to succeed
"It appears that, for Formula 1, the American dream is officially dead…"
I thought the face of Logan Sargeant would appear after that 2 second silence
yeah I understand even with 3 grands prix and an American driver... It's still hardly the "ideal" form of American dream
@@KneYka what we need is an Andretti F1 team, with Colton Herta and Logan Sargeant behind the wheel.
According to Mario Andretti, everything is in place. They have a facility, they have an engine supplier, all that's missing is FIA approval
Time will tell. This offseason's likely the time if the new entry will or won't happen.
@@tylercady3985 acutally Andretti should find a new manufacturer, probably ford or GM(caddy or chevy) and that's the job done
@@parkerchen17 I would love to see it, but I think Andretti wants to be a customer team for someone who's already there until they get their feet under them. It's probably easier and smarter to do that than to try to build an engine from scratch with someone like Ford or GM, while having to build the car and run the team for the first year
Josh: The dream of an American f1 team is dead.
Andretti: Am I a joke to you?
Josh: well..........kinda

Michael Andretti and GM: "And I took that personally."
Some say that US F1 are still working on getting their website back up.
You know things have gone terribly wrong when Karun Chandhok is being sent to investigate..😂.
This whole Andretti saga is probably worth another video, I'm assuming that's why they weren't mentioned. It's a bit sad that the teams (especially Toto Wolff) have been trying to block them, even after they were willing to pay the astronomical entry fees, and seem to be serious about it.
You do realize that Andretti already races in multiple series right?
@@456MrPeople All of them minor national series, nothing global.
Great, bring them in too. The more teams the better.
Sooo... this is why the entire F1 management eye rolled when Andretti announced plans for an entry
I think.
Each one of those teams backstory was just as crazy, if not more, than USF1.
Agree,@@srfnsurfer
@AidanMilward has some great videos covering these teams. It would be nice to hear Josh's take on them as well.
It's a bit annoying when something like that happens. Then again not surprising considering the rest of the lower pack in the 2010s...
I mean it seemed like they were more focused on changing the former Joe Gibbs Racing race shop over to F1 than actually building a car (even though I'm positive that Joe Gibbs Racing could have built an F1 car in that building, they could probably do it in their current building)
Edit: although you can't blame USF1 for wanting a secondary base in Europe, and I always hated how the FIA forced Cosworth engines on the teams that entered in 2010...
The fact that Williams, a team as British as it gets, signed the next US driver before HAAS did is truly something...
0:34 from this teams Epsilon Euskadi was at least in Spain a really interesting proyect. They had a really great car in Lemans and they had performed well in lower categories like WSBR.

Nice video ! finally we know exactly what happened to USF1 ! I personally have emotional connection with that team because I learned a lot from their videos on youtube how the car is made especially the front wing which helped me in building my Phoenix F1 rc car !
The uploading schedule is incredible
WRC, Supercars, F1, Two Wheel Tuesdays...damn, I miss SPEED...Varsha, Matchett, and Hobbs were great to listen to during a Formula 1 race. I think they tried to time the opening of the scotch bottle perfectly with the lights going out and would have the first highballs downed by the end of the 2nd lap. I'd love to give the Sky Sports feed the boot and never have to listen to David Croft ever again.
I wonder if this video is my fault since I sort of suggested it a few months back. I'm glad you did this one since I was always wondering how you'd cover this.
As an American US F1 teams could be doing better. Excited to see Logan Sargent race in F1 next year!

Awesome videos Josh, greetings from Ecuador!
They really need to allow Andretti to own his own team. He wanted to have clearance 2 years before the debut season and the team has basically everything set up. With the FIA putting 3 US GPs on the schedule it’s time for a new attempt at an American team (That’s not Haas) and Andretti is probably the best option
Not deep enough pockets.
I understand Stefan gp didn't have much credit personal wise, but being the team that bought the assets of the Toyota team, they should've been one of the entrants.

The USF1 UA-cam channel is still online. 😀 I subscribed it. Everybody should do this! 😄

The want a US manufacturer backed team. Andretti got rejected cause they would just be haas another customer team. I’ve been saying that they need to talk to Chevy

Nice Vid Josh. How about a video about the Death of Manor racing?
Dream is dead until Andretti's quest for a spot on the F1 grid bares fruit.
It wouldve been funny if Gene Haas didnt sign the acord and left F1. Which honestly looked very likely when Ferrari got caught cheating and not helping Haas like they were suppose to

Declan Brennan (the dude who made the silly UA-cam videos referenced above) is a bit of a character. He's involved in IMSA these days, working in PR for Gradient Racing, primarily. The first time I met him was at Lime Rock Park when Gradient Racing was still CJ Wilson Racing. He'd discovered the night before that CJ Wilson (team owner and former pitcher in MLB) had never seen Key & Peele. So, he spent part of the day in the media center using Photoshop to put some of the faux player names from the East-West college sketches (Ex: Hingle McCringleberry) on a picture of the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport they were racing at the time.
Ah USF1. What could’ve been. But at the end of the day at least it was just a case of big talk and not being prepared enough. Given other F1 and racing stories it could’ve been a LOT worse. Least we got Logan Sargeant and 3 races.

To be fair to Haas, I really liked how they went about it when they entered, they were smart and by minimising the stuff they had to do in house they got credible results quickly. and apart from sponsorship ("Bad santa" and Uralkali in 21) they're one on the most likeable teams.

This is America we're talking about I guaranteed every little aspect that needed to get done was outsourced to some other company. Our government operates like this. we don't fix our roads we outsource it to some private company with zero oversight so they cook the batch in order to come back and fix it next week instead of next year for repairs. I'm sure Andretti would hire American drivers or bring back Grosjean to the gird and yes, Grosjean is an Andretti driver. The big question is where they would hire driver if they do get approved, from Indycar or Formula 2?
If a driver of theirs wins Formula E the latter.
