Yeah, I've always seen it that way too, especially after the movie where Sonic does a lot of hairstyles and even uses hair gel, I think quills are also used as a base for hair when people make fanarts of the characters as if they were human
@@Southernokiemomma Yeah same they need to keep the side mouth in the CGI cutscenes. Remember kids, a middle mouth would might end up only working for your movie adaptation of your mascot!
Long quills for Modern Sonic is all I need in the games. I don’t like how they keep constantly shortening his quills to look like his Classic counterpart. It will get confusing. Awesome video, I love these discussions of Sonic’s anatomy. When you talked about his mouth direction and eyes. Things that deserve a proper explanation since no one else has these parts except for Sonic himself. It’s just awesome. 🔥
How about the hardness of his quills? Should it be portrayed as, say, Sonic's quills get harder and more spike-like when he's enraged or about to fight?
I've been drawing Sonic for a while now - he's one of my favorite characters to draw - and when it comes to drawing forward facing Sonic, I've always preferred to have them facing off to one side for two reasons. 1. The quills are an important part of his sillouhette. Sonic's face with the three curved quills is an iconic sillouhette similar to the three circles that make up Mickey Mouse's face, so I like to keep that visual as much as possible. 2. I'm a firm believer that Sonic looks best in a 2D artstyle where the artist isn't afraid to take some stylistic liberties to make the character looks as good as he can. I'd rather an artist go off model to make Sonic look cooler than stay on model and have him look awkward. Basically, I prefer to take a Mickey Mouse approach - where his ears are always on the same spot on his head regardless of where he's facing - but to a less extreme degree. At the end of the day, they are technically his hair, so you can style them however you want until you find a style that looks best to you. Don't be afraid to add or subtract some quills if you feel your drawing needs it, and if you want to justify them facing a certain direction you can just say they're blowing in the wind! Experiment until you find something you like! Also, movie Sonic actually has seven quills on his head. There's an extra quill in the center row that can be seen in both the movies and the Jack's figure
Ay, the most anticipated video from this series! I think the quills are definitely important to his design, and they should continue to remain as such. Whether they’re long or short, they should always be in Sonic’s benefit to whatever the situation is. They offer the signature edge that the character had when he was first being designed, so if they don’t, it’ll probably feel like a completely different type of character because Sonic wouldn’t be as edgy as he normally is. That being said, I’m not opposed to longer or shorter quills as long as they don’t look out of place and way too much. I would say my favorite executions in terms of the quills has to be the Mania/CD design because it captures Sonic’s personality and it makes him look a little more cartoony, which I actually really like. :)
For me, i make the quills stylized on the drawing, like, even if he is facing the front, i make his quills go to the oposite direction to make that simbol of his head (kinda the same thing with the Mickey Mouse ears tbh)
As the minority who prefers short quill Sonic, allow me to make an assement. Shorter spikes make more sense , and allows you to move quicker and agile since shorter quills naturally carry less weight, and shorter quills make it easier to ball up and roll around, and length doesn't always equate to sharpness, his spikes are still as sharp as ever, but the shorter quills make it seem more agile which is overall more lethal combination
sonics quill length doesn’t really bother me, although i do prefer when they’re lined up in a perfect silhouette. on the drawing his quills thing, i usually just make them sway to a side. it’s moreso a creative liberty than anything haha
So when I draw sonic, I'll just draw whatever looks cooler. Usually that's the quills off to the side. Three quills, and try to complement his silhouette.
@@SONICSTA to be honest this might have been the biggest mistake the movie made. They might as well just changed his name to Sonic the Porcupine if they wasn't going to care about actual characteristics of a hedgehog. And now the whole fandom is brainwashed... @@ZenithintheMaking Spine is the general term for "spikes" for any animal with spikes on their bodies. The name of the TYPE of spines vary from texture and consistency on each animal with them. The unleashed model quill/spine length was perfect imo. Same goes for 06. They made him stand out, but the length they're at now kinda makes it meh. But that's my opinion
The up grow is a particularly interesting one, because real world hedgehogs actually do this to defend themselves. My dad had to use my jacket to move a hedgehog that was crossing the road. Also, I absolutely agree with your opinion on Sonic unleashed quills being the ideal length for modern Sonic. With the drawing Sonic's quills, I tend to use references and turnarounds if i can find them and adjust them until I like how they look.
I never thought of this before only until now that it’s become the topic of discussion. Personally it’s still Sonic regardless of the length of his Quills and that you’ve made good points about each one. I like them both tbh
I honestly never really looked into detail how different the quills are for each variety of Sonic!😆 Great video by the way!! I always look forward to these videos!🙌
I personally like when sonic's quills are at their hardest and long like in SA1 and 2 art. when they move around a lot when he's falling it feels like the quills are soft, like hair. soft quills make it harder to believe that these same quills can slice through robots
With the drawing part, I have the quills spike off to a certain direction when he's facing forward kind of like with Sonic X/Toei/etc. It kind of reminds me of characters like Goku where whatever direction he's in, his hair always keeps a certain design. It's just a cool little trick imo though it definitely only really works in 2D. Though I don't mind the other method of simply hanging them down whenever he's facing forward. I think it can look really cool actually like 06 Sonic, I think he looks really cool even when you look at him from the front. Though I feel like if you tried to have toei sonic's quills just accurately be behind his head when he's facing forward it just doesn't look as appealing. So maybe with that it kind of depends on what design that's being worked with.
well, as an artist myself, to answer your question: it depends. depends whether or not there is an idea of wind blowing at sonic at your art. if there is, the quills would be leaned, like if he would be outside somewhere, not in any building or a facility or a space that is shut from the wind blowing from the side. if your mind decides to not have any wind blowing on sonic in his straight looking position, then the quills would be just like they are in '06, or any other game where sonic can look right at you, while his quills arent blown to the side. it looks kind of better when the wind IS blowing them to the side because that makes him just look cooler, but sometimes it can be the other way around! depends on specifically your drawing skills and the way you draw stuff. it can look weird when blown to the side for some people who arent used to drawing perspective like quills being shown a bit blown to the side, which makes them look tiny and short in frontal perspective, so the answer is depends. its overall YOUR ART and you can do whatever you want, whether you add wind to the drawing to make his quills frontally tilted like in sonic cd, or make them look straight forward, it would be entirely your decision which is whether you WANT to or not. to me, the tilted quills look better, but thats just how i see things, and i rarely see sonic looking forwards while also looking good. i mean, 06 does it great, so that is one example for me, but overall, it just depends on your decisions and liking.
You forgot about quill positioning; here's some of my observations/thoughts about it: The very middle quill cluster on Sonic's head moves up or down between games. Sometimes it's directly between the top pair of quill clusters, yet is sometimes slightly below, between the two pairs of quill clusters. The latter seems more natural to me (as natural as a 3 foot tall blue hedgehog can look), while the former is more reminiscent of his classic 'do. When Sonic's quills are aligned, the view of him from the side looks more streamlined; the other position makes more sense when you're looking from behind. (Yes, I call them "quill clusters' because that just makes sense to me. Also, I personally prefer to draw the quills beside to head for Sonic's front view.)
Another reason why I love Sonic’s quills to be so much longer rather than it being short or even so a lethal weapon is because of this. Sonic just looks so much cooler with his longer quills and so much more heroic whenever he’s being his true hero self. They also make Sonic look extremely intimidating like his spikes can be dangerous around anybody if Sonic feels threatened. Yet, Sonic shows off his golden heart side and shows that an awesome guy like him won’t let his quills hurt you. It’s very beyond amazing to think about! EEP!🤩 Sonic looks awesome and heroic no matter what even with short quills but I just prefer his longer ones.😇
Ah, such a divisive topic, personally speaking the size of the quills in a medium length, not too long and not too short like Unleashed or Frontiers (specifically Unleashed) with classic Sonic it works a shorter length because he is smaller and cute but with modern Sonic the situation is the opposite, a longer length suits him better and gives him a more cool and even intimidating look, usually the quills work as the hair of the characters, you can see this in the fanarts of the characters as humans where the quills serve as a reference to draw the hair and this is even adapted for the movie where Sonic does a lot of hairstyles and even uses hair gel, not to mention the way they move and behave when the character is lying on the ground or is hit by something, for example simulating a hair as well as Boom's that seem to simulate messier and more rebellious hair with a few strands of hair loose in the middle of the rest all arranged, another curiosity is that Sonic (probably the other hedgehogs) has total control over the quills like a real life hedgehog, being able to make them softer or harder and sharper serving as a wrecking ball to break and dent things or to cut like a saw and prick like... spikes, this is a nice detail since the biology of the animals makes them have natural weapons and it would be interesting to see more of that being brought to the franchise because if we compare them they are like superpowers
Personally when I’m drawing Sonic facing forward I do it like the Sonic CD opening it keeps his iconic silhouette there and I think it looks cooler than the other way of drawing it I also mostly draw Classic Sonic though so idk how it could look on Modern Sonic
5:42 Fun Fact: Despite what Sega keeps gaslighting us, Classic Sonic can talk and is 16, while Modern Sonic is 15. Sega's just being classic, inconsistent, gaslighting Sega.
when i draw sonic i make it look like the sonic CD/mania style because 1. Its awsome and 2. im not a fan of giving sonic dreads(cause thats what the quills look like form the front) and 3. its easier to draw and gives a nostalgic feel.
I’ve gotten used to the short quills at this point but I still think that shorter quills should only stick with Classic Sonic & longer quills should only stick with Modern. About the drawing Sonic faced forward part, I just draw 3 quills curved(?) like in Sonic X. It just looks better imo. BUT I never tried drawing Morden Sonic With the CD/Mania quills sticking up so doing that might be better as well!
I’m guessing about why the quill length is bc he goes so fast in some games and the quills don’t have time to be solid and they stretch However when sonic is in a still game we can see sonics quills get a break
An advice on how to draw sonic's quills form tye front, first you have to decide how the quills woukd look form a side and how low you want them to be, after that you should understand sonic's quills as curved cones rather than triangles, with that in minde drawing sonics quills feels more natural
When i draw sonic i usually draw classic sonic facing forward with and extra quil on top of his head (like cd and mania sonic potray him) cuz i feel like adding another quil to his head makes his quils more dangerouse
Next could you make a video on Sonic's gloves because I think his gloves are also interesting to talk about since he is not the only character who wears white gloves
Odd. In the games he has 2 on his back and 6 on his head. When you showed BOOM, you said they add 3 (the skinny ones) making a grand total of 9. But the image you showed removed the middle bottom one so it only shows 8. (But the 3D model does have 9 so... I guess still counts. lol) The movie doesn't stay true to the 6 quill total (for the head). It has 7. Instead of being 3 rows of 2, or 2 rows of 3 (depending how you look at it, as both middle quills are raised higher than the 2 on the sides.), there's 2 on the left side, 3 in the middle, and 2 on the right side. (plus the middle back quill you mentioned was added.) I'm surprised you considered game Sonic as having 9 spikes as the 9th one you added is actually his TAIL. But, it's fine. All versions of Sonic have the tail so it doesn't mess up anything as long as you always include it. 05:53 *A LITTLE shorter. "VERY" short would be shorter than Classic Sonic. The OVA had very short quills. Also I disagree about the inconsistency because his overall look is often slightly altered. It just means there's a consistency in his design but in numerous slightly different styles. And also about Sonic Unleashed's quills looking more lethal. Idk. They look kinda floppy while the shorter quills look more firm and like they can cut you. I think SA2 did it best. Kinda long so it looks edgier, but stiff (Except in 2P mode) so it looks lethal. I think it also depends on the shape of the quills. I DO agree that the shorter the quills, the shorter Sonic should be though. It's not really about the length of the quill to his head, but to his height. It needs to subconsciously make you feel like he can curl into a ball. But one advance the Classic short quills has is the shape and spacing. It has the ability to look like a buzzsaw which is complimentary to his spin moves. Also I feel like it DOESN'T matter and these are actually just minor nitpicks we all have different opinions on. This is literally the first time I've heard the fanbase disown the shorter quill look when in the past it was always as accepted and just as cool as the long quill look. PERSONALLY, I draw his hair more accurate to the design when facing forward, but not sticking out so far to the sides. I have it so you barely see the hooks of the 2 side bottom quills like in the Adventure games and classic sprites. The 2 side top quills are stumps to imply something is there but you can't see it. They help with the overall shape of Sonic's head. And then of course the top middle is a hill to give off that triangular shape overall. BUT, if his head is facing downward, I transition to something more like CD/Mania, but straight up, unless he starts to tilt to one side or the other. That's my way of combining the 2 styles.
Personally, I draw Sonic as a combination of Movie Sonic and Sonic from Sonic x. However, I draw his head with 4 quills on his head to make it easier to draw his head.
I never had problems with the length of the quills, I have a bigger problem with how that middle quill fits in the head; in the forces model, wich actually is the lost world model, the middle quill looks smased uo and it looks wierd
While I prefer how his quills looked in Sonic Unleashed, I’ve grown used to them being shorter in the newer games. The quills length isn’t really something that bothers me too much.
Sorry that i forgot to mention the seventh quill movie sonic has also i labeled sonic’s tail as a quill. my b

well, as an artist myself, to answer your question: it depends. depends whether or not there is an idea of wind blowing at sonic at your art. if there is, the quills would be leaned, like if he would be outside somewhere, not in any building or a facility or a space that is shut from the wind blowing from the side. if your mind decides to not have any wind blowing on sonic in his straight looking position, then the quills would be just like they are in '06, or any other game where sonic can look right at you, while his quills arent blown to the side. it looks kind of better when the wind IS blowing them to the side because that makes him just look cooler, but sometimes it can be the other way around! depends on specifically your drawing skills and the way you draw stuff. it can look weird when blown to the side for some people who arent used to drawing perspective like quills being shown a bit blown to the side, which makes them look tiny and short in frontal perspective, so the answer is depends. its overall YOUR ART and you can do whatever you want, whether you add wind to the drawing to make his quills frontally tilted like in sonic cd, or make them look straight forward, it would be entirely your decision which is whether you WANT to or not. to me, the tilted quills look better, but thats just how i see things, and i rarely see sonic looking forwards while also looking good. i mean, 06 does it great, so that is one example for me, but overall, it just depends on your decisions and liking.

Also i dont like sonics modern design from the front because the silhouette looks a lot like knuckles due to the longer quills
@@jonasd.2548 understandable
Finally a video about this
I would make a balance of how his quills are portrayed in most games and movies.
Lets see about the quill art. I have always drawn the quils spiked up like CD and Mania as I thought that looked cooler.
for drawing sonic quills from the front i usually reference page 1 of sonic 261.
I’m guessing about why the quill length is bc he goes so fast in some games and the quills don’t have time to be solid and they stretch
However when sonic is in a still game we can see sonics quills get a break
2:57 it’s prolly because the style and the cartoony motion blur.
In sonic prime Dr Deep told that sonic gets its power from his quills
I wonder what kind of hair gel Amy had to use to keep her quills into a bob like hairstyle.
An advice on how to draw sonic's quills form tye front, first you have to decide how the quills woukd look form a side and how low you want them to be, after that you should understand sonic's quills as curved cones rather than triangles, with that in minde drawing sonics quills feels more natural
MY ONLY issue with short quills is the middle one. It just looks goofy or off
i understand that
Imma be honest, short quills long quills, if I'm not actively looking for it my brain can barely tell the difference
Im surprised you didnt talk about how his quils looks more like a mohawk in early cartoon and comic
I like to think it as both a maintenance and seasonal thing
he has 7 quills in the movie 1:30
the 4th quill on movie sonic's back comes from the special stages in sonic 2
or at least it's the first time we see it
That piggy bank I got is so cool I got him buying one.
When i draw sonic i usually draw classic sonic facing forward with and extra quil on top of his head (like cd and mania sonic potray him) cuz i feel like adding another quil to his head makes his quils more dangerouse
Little quillcanon here:
What if quills simply just like, fall out sometimes, if too many grow on those head spines, like loose hair
Sonic Has To Keep His Quils Fresh
The 9th quill is actually his tail on the back.
Dr.Rotobink(Jim Carrey) lick the quill once and likes the shocking effect after that.
Love the JSR music!
Don't forget they can react to emotion, too!
Might have to answer the art question by sending pics over on Twitter... because my answer is as complicated as the question, haha
2:10 Sonic David cameo
I can’t look at that Movie Sonic figure without imagining his voice coming out of it. 😂
@@CSTH1 Right??? 😂
LOL
I draw sonic facing forward with his quills leaning to a certain direction like in the sonic cd and mania opening just looks cooler in my opinion
Movie Sonic actually have 7 head Quills, and 3 back quills
I just think he is giving it haircuts
That’s my head cannon of why they changed overtime
Next could you make a video on Sonic's gloves because I think his gloves are also interesting to talk about since he is not the only character who wears white gloves
Any chance of a video about his arms ever
Odd. In the games he has 2 on his back and 6 on his head.
When you showed BOOM, you said they add 3 (the skinny ones) making a grand total of 9. But the image you showed removed the middle bottom one so it only shows 8. (But the 3D model does have 9 so... I guess still counts. lol)
The movie doesn't stay true to the 6 quill total (for the head). It has 7. Instead of being 3 rows of 2, or 2 rows of 3 (depending how you look at it, as both middle quills are raised higher than the 2 on the sides.), there's 2 on the left side, 3 in the middle, and 2 on the right side. (plus the middle back quill you mentioned was added.)
I'm surprised you considered game Sonic as having 9 spikes as the 9th one you added is actually his TAIL. But, it's fine. All versions of Sonic have the tail so it doesn't mess up anything as long as you always include it.
05:53
*A LITTLE shorter.
Unleasched and Boom quills are the best ones
Do you think Sonic could cut through flesh and bones with his quills?
Yup
Yes.
Of course, he a blue Hedgehog
If he can punch holes through solid iron with ease, then flesh and bones would be like butter to him
Sonic gives Eggman a paper cut
Personally, I draw Sonic as a combination of Movie Sonic and Sonic from Sonic x. However, I draw his head with 4 quills on his head to make it easier to draw his head.
You ganna talk about movie sonics 7 quill on his head
Whatever drawing him front I put 3 quills on the side
as i saw the thumbnail... i was like wtf
I like his quills that’s how sonic gets his powers from
I would draw Sonic's quills like how CD and Mania did it I just think it looks better.
I subbed
thank you❤️🙌
Personally I think longer quills like seen in 06 looks weirder than the current shorter length. I don't think they should get any shorter though.
I never had problems with the length of the quills, I have a bigger problem with how that middle quill fits in the head; in the forces model, wich actually is the lost world model, the middle quill looks smased uo and it looks wierd
Long time no see remember me?
Why did you count his tail as a spike in 1:45?
Anyone notice the "bottom quill" is sonic's tail
While I prefer how his quills looked in Sonic Unleashed, I’ve grown used to them being shorter in the newer games. The quills length isn’t really something that bothers me too much.
a video about sonics gloves
Sonic quills are like Mickey Mouse ears
8:05 fin.
I like Boom Sonic's spikier quills
