Ah yes, the perfect topic for a Sonic Discussion. By the way, the tan area where his mouth is called his "muzzle." Anyways, onto my actual thoughts on the topic. I actually think the mouth is a very crucial part to his design. It gives off what he's feeling and it doesn't shy away from changing positions depending on the situation. I'm more used to the side mouth, but I do think the middle mouth can work as shown by the Sonic movies and Sonic Prime. The mouth is basically speaking out the emotion that said person is feeling, and that's a pretty cool anatomical feature in one's body. Great video as always! :D
A chin and chest that are lighter than the body is also called "Countershading." Animals have this to avoid being spotted, flattening their appearance by being lighter where shadows naturally fall.
I'd say that centre mouth is better for cuteness whereas side mouth is better for coolness. In most situations the current model can't pull off coolness convincingly so it's probably better with center mouth the majority of the time instead of the side.
In regards to the middle mouth, I believe it would work a lot better if it was larger. While, granted, SA2 had a small middle mouth, but it wasn’t really a common concern at the time(Or at least that’s what I think I got into Sonic Unleashed in 2015). Boom Sonic and Movie Sonic benefit from the middle mouth because it could be a big mouth. That way, it’s able to cover up the muzzle. Also, @SONICSTA, I believe that it doesn’t curve into the eyes because the muzzle acts like a regular humans cheeks. If he’s eating or smiles really big, his cheek will cover some of the bottom of his eye. 5:53
Move his mouth based on the camera angle or which way the character is facing. If it's a head on shot with Sonic mainly facing forward, middle mouth. If he's at a side angle or his head is facing sideways, side mouth. Whichever is needed to allow you to see his mouth fairly well at different angles without it looking weird.
His side mouth is kinda weird when he’s talking in cutscenes I think it would be better if he’s talking it’s in the middle but when he’s doing some poses or something its on the side
I prefer Sonic's middle-mouth, specifically 3d because... I just absolutely love the Sonic model in the Mario and Sonic Olympic games. Though, that's just my own preference. But... I also feel like the side-mouth works better in 2d artworks, as seen that it elevates Sonic's character better and clearer. There are just some things that 2d art can get away with. I could argue that even 3d official renders of Sonic is acceptable too. It's just way better than animated in-game cutscenes like with Sonic forces having Sonic's side-mouth being quite weird to look at considering the way the camera angle was arranged making it appear that way. So basically like you said, camera angles play a factor here. With Sonic Prime, it did a good job at combining of the two different arrangement of his mouth. This was executed well, depending on some certain scenes and camera angles. So... yeah. Both side-mouth and middle-mouth can work hand-in-hand especially in 3d. I still prefer the middle-mouth...
I'm a sonic artist, and when drawing sonic I usually draw his mouth to the side, though it can depend on the expression. Some expressions, like a blank one, just work better in the middle. I do have a funny story tho. Since Sonic was basically what got me into drawing, when I tried drawing things that weren't sonic related, I'd have a really hard time with the mouths since I was just so used to drawing them on the side.
If you look in certain instances at BOOM Sonic he pretty much does the same as Prime Sonic. Just look at the games cutscenes. Which also has some of the best Sonic animations in any in-game cutscene. I suggest looking at season two of the show because you noticed him having a side mouth a lot more than in season one. I think it looks just as good as it does in Prime.💙
great video, in my opinion Sonic should have a mouth that can do both , and that isn't really asking much since the olympic models have a feature to move the mouth from the middle to the sides
Honestly, I do like both. Like you mentioned, in some artworks and in the movie, having the middle or side mouth would just make it look weird. I think it really depends on Sonic's angle and style of what looks good or not. Most of the time when I draw Sonic, I use the side mouth but I have done middle simply because it looked better. I think it really chalks it up to the style Sonic is drawn or animated in.
I only ever enjoyed the side mouth for the iconic smirk. Every other time it always felt a bit awkward to look at and think about. I feel like middle mouth is best just for having more freedom for camera angles and expressions. I think Sonic Prime doing the mixture is the best outcome as the Adventure-Shadow games had his mouth in the middle where it looked fine and would still do the iconic smirk. So I think having Sonics mouth have free movement around his muzzle is perfect allowing us to get both. I think that’s nit asking too much, at least for current game models.
2D I prefer Side But 3D, I prefer Middle mouth, a giant mouth like SA1’s model, or a giant mouth, where Sonic has the ability of morphing his muzzle on the specific parts of the mouth for more expression. Like instantly morph the muzzle from a side mouth to form a middle mouth. It could also explain why he sometimes still has his mouth on a specific side, maybe he prefers it like that, or he’s in the middle of a conversation and can’t morph it that easily mid sentence, par a few exceptions like Unleashed. The only caveat with this is that his mouth would need to be around the entire muzzle, so we can’t have it follow the muzzle’s opening like in Prime, which is more like Sonic has the ability of moving his inner mouth and morphing his muzzle to get the opening for it. Yes I did the idea of morphing his mouth FNF Xenophanes and Soul Knuckles just with more creativity than just completely opening the muzzle. How could you tell?
I used to walk around with the Sonic smirk in kindergarten, I must've looked criminally smug. lol I prefer the side mouth, the center mouth really emphasizes how weirdly shaped his head and eyes are (game version/Boom) and reminds me of the meme where the kid is asking if you have games on your phone.
Sonic was designed with the side mouth for 2D artwork & sprites. 3D doesn't seem to be a consideration in the design. Sonic Prime certainly has the best interpretation, blending between the two seamlessly, but I can see that being extremely difficult if not impossible to implement in the games.
I really don't have a favorite when it comes to the side or center mouth. It really just depends on the camera angle and the situation. For Movie Sonic, I will always prefer center. Side mouth looks way too weird on that design. I love it when it changes between the two. That might be one of the reasons why I like Sonic Prime so much. Because it's done so well.
You have a point there about how Sonic's mouth is normally on the side. It does look a little weird if you put Modern Sonic's mouth in the middle in the games.😆 But I agree with you about how WildBrain animates Sonic in Sonic Prime and how fluent the animation is. The animation is one of the things that I love about the show!🙌
The prime approach is what ive always wanted cuz honestly im not a big fan of the constant side mouth. It often looks stiff and awkward. Even frontiers has that problem occasionally. Prime also takes advantage of how cartoony the characters are and flails every body part everywhere (as needed), squashing and stretching, all that good stuff, which looks amazing. SA2's middle mouth is also one i adore, it worked with the lower poly models and idk hoe to explain it but it gave the characters a certain look i find really appealing
On his face it's not a skin color, it's his lips. Sonic has enormous lips, like most characters do. Yeah, look at Shadow the Hedgehog, and realize that this yellow part of his face is his huge lips.
The tan part is usually called the muzzle. If it were longer like Tails's or Knuckles's it is called the snout. Real hedgehogs usually have a snout though.
Yh characters like tails, amy, big, cream, blaze, and i think charmy will mostly have middle mouths and others like sonic, shadow, knuckles, rouge espio, and silver have side mouths unless it's the Olympics where original models are made for the sonic cast and they all have middle mouths
Nice vid and all but seriously if you’re ever doing any more Shonen Jump Sonic vids, I got some ideas for the video and I only two inconsistencies that I have to point out about your Part 3 video.
I think we should leave the side mouth for comics, tv shows, and cgi cutscene for the games, but for in-game engine, sonic should have the middle mouth
Sonic's mouth shoud have a production team that knows wtf they're doing, these details even being debated by fans is a product of their incompetence. Sonic Prime does the bare basics of how things have been animated since Looney Tunes days.
my question isn't Why, its How. How does sega model sonics 3d model? with 2 - 3 mouths? When he's talking out of one do they make the other mouths super smooth somehow without showing the polygons clipping? do they somehow miraculously move the model of his mouth and if so how do they do it? its all about HOW they did it in the games
Stick with what Prime does for me, but I’m surprised that the canine wasn’t mentioned. I always loved that small feature. It made Sonic edgy, but not sinister.
What kind of felt weird about Sonic's mouth in Sonic Superstars is that it always had that tiny "O" shape to it like he's whistling. Like bro, why was your mouth slightly open the entire time you explored the Northstar Islands? Did you see a freaking Tomato move by itself and try to forget that it happened? 💀
I prefer middle mouth. I really liked Sonic '06 middle mouth models. (Edit: I think it works better for 3D. But, I also think both work well when used together.)
A LOT of Sonic's wierdness comes down to the style. Having "one" eye and a side mouth are more suited for styalized takes, like the OG classic Sonic (heavily inspired by rubber hose cartoons) and Sonic Adventure (speaks for itself). Modern Sonic on the other hand has really dropped being styalized in the same way as he used to be, leaving these wierd leftover design features like the cyclops eye and the side mouth. It's really easy to ignore when it's part of an art style, but when it isn't, (As with EVERY modern game after Unleashed) it sticks out like a sore thumb and raises a lot of questions, because now we're no longer tied to a style, and we're led to believe that this is how Sonic ACTUALLY IS in any given setting, which is extremely cursed.
I don't have issues with the side mouth but i prefer the middle mouth especially in 3d, whether his mouth changed or not it still freaks me out a bit cuz in the side mouth models if he opens his mouth does that mean all his teeth and tongue are just on the side, think of how his skeleton looks like😂 Like you said i love the way prime animated it, combining both elements
In official media, I really don't care what kind of mouth Sonic has. I think they all look good, but I do prefer it when the mouth can move around and isn't fixed. There are multiple scenes in Forces that just look off to me because Sonic's mouth is in a fixed position and is way too far away from where the focus is. As an artist, I tend to move Sonic's mouth around to wherever I need it. I usually put it on the side, but really I'll fiddle around with it until I get the right look. If it gets the right expression across, it doesn't really matter where the mouth is on his muzzle. I think that Prime has the right idea and that Sonic's mouth should be free to move around depending on the camera angle. When you can do that, it avoids awkward positions you get resulting from a fixed mouth and helps to make Sonic more expressive.
I like both side and middle I like who prime balances it out perfectly and that should be in the games. The 2 mouths in lost make me very uncomfortable.
lmao this is gonna be a banger. I'll be the 1st to say it - There is no right answer, but the heavy reliance on "side mouth" has to stop. Sonic Prime has shows us that it's possible to transition from side to middle positions. The only reason "side mouth" still works is because we're conditioned to accept it. But with the front camera angle, it hasn't been working. It needs to be a dynamic position. And this really goes for all 3D characters - not just in Sonic
I think Amy also tends to have middle mouth almost as much as Tails. But yeah Prime does it best. Lets talk about something more important though. Fangs. Sonic should have them again, but more importantly edgy chars (Knux and Shadow) and animals know for having them should (Blaze and especially Rouge).
I really love Sonic’s Graffiti mouth from Uekawa’s Art
Sameee
I like how the boom cutscenes handled their mouths, where the lips can move where they want to, but the actual mouth stays in the middle.
i have to look at that again
@@SONICSTA I believe the mouth does move a little, but it looks a LOT better than the mainline games.
