    I love this podcast. I've been trying to implement Extrmeme Ownership for a couple years now and this episode finally crystallized for me what it all is. It's not about leadership or lifestyle, it's about solving problems. It just so happens that leaders are the people in the best positions to solve problems.

    "The goal of extreme ownership isn't just to take ownership...it's to solve the problem. The goal isn't to look who to blame, the goal is to get the problem solved " - Jocko. I think this is a really productive way to approach problems, because it encourages a group effort to come up with the best solution. If everyone assumes at least some responsibility for a failure, not even full responsibility, they will be motivated to work on a solution from their unique angle. Put multiple people together, all working from their own angles, and you will have a timely, efficient, effective solution.

    One thing that I've found to be true after years of trying to be that shoulder to lean on when times are tough is the idea that people aren't willing to change until the urge to change is greater than the urge to stay the same. Just because they're seeking your advice, does not mean they are ready to implement it. Stay the course, maybe it's your perception that needs adjustment.

    46:01 Poker is an even better analog to the default aggressive mindset. In fact, this is the first thing that I thought of. Many times, I'm too passive and get beat, even when I have a better hand. When I'm aggressive I win more. But as you said, some times I'll take a hit. This pushes me back to being more passive, which is WRONG. I end up losing more vs if I got back to being aggressive and identifying the mistake(s) I made.

    23:00 What should you do if you have a chain of command and you take EO ( Extreme Ownership ) of a subordinate's mistake, solve the problem, and then later find out that the solution is not enough. It might be incomplete, and you need help, or it might be simply incorrect, or you might have a situation that is over your head. How do you cooperate in these cases with the rest of the chain of command, above you and below you ?

      working example: you got The World's Greatest Crossing Guard (RESPECTABLE) directing traffic... but the kids dont listens to him, they listen to a Clown (LIKEABLE) nearby... but the Clown directs em into oncoming traffic, then he tries to stop em but the kids dont take him seriously... but then a cop (FEARED) yells "STOP" and they do,... so yeah.. maybe "it takes a village" :)

    • @hturk5078
      @hturk5078 4 роки тому +1

      Except when someone mistakes a lack of respect for a lack of fear. Respect and fear naturally intermingle in hierarchies of human organizations geared towards a goal, usually domination in some field.
      Some people try to use fear in personal relationships with strangers or family, but that is not compatible with normal familial bonds.
      There is no difference between liking someone and respecting them. If you like someone then you will respect their autonomy in some fashion: their comfort or safety around you, their freedom and ability to be themselves and express themselves, and the benefit that you receive when they enjoy their autonomy around you. It is a basic human transaction.
      Fear will bring the worst out of people in personal relationships. A fear of harm or status loss, like humiliation, or a fear of loss of social standing or loss to access of comfort, is incompatible with respect if it's taken too far.
      Fear should never be a doctrine for anything personal, and if it is used in human relationships at all it should be used with the understanding that a little of it (fear of joblessness or homelessness or failure) may stress individuals enough towards success.
      Expectations of respect also have to be reasonable. If you don't give something back to people like kindness, security, joy, trust, whatever else we consider positive, then you cannot expect unwarranted reciprocation (a delusion), or the use of fear to obtain it.

    Ownership = responsibility
    responsibility
    the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone.
    "a true leader takes responsibility for their team and helps them achieve goals"
    the state or fact of being accountable or to blame for something.
    ***the opportunity or ability to act independently and take decisions without authorization.***
    "we expect individuals to take on more responsibility"
    a thing which one is required to do as part of a job, role, or legal obligation.
    responsibility means doing everything in your power to either prevent problems, or provide solutions
    regardless of other people's negligence and ineptitude
    for example, responsibility to drive safely and prevent crashes, despite other bad drivers.
    someone crashes into you, it is their fault, but your child is dead,
    it is their fault, but it is your responsibility

    How do I get out of the cycle of being broke? I can't even jog because of my spine. I work six days a week and almost have to quit that job because of my physical problems. I really feel like there's no way I can get a second job. I already don't get enough sleep because I live on my friend's mom's couch in the living room and wake up at 3:30am to go to work. What do I do? Why is working six days a week not enough for a bed to sleep in, or an apartment of my own? I need another job and just don't have the energy. How do I get it?

      What's up with your spine?

      You can do it. The effects of your hard work just aren’t visible right now. Find a good bed, get some rest, eat some good food and get outside and walk. Walking will help clear your mind and you will see a better way.

      @@photon7526 Degenerative Disc Disease... I have two bad ones in my neck so I can't jog or do push ups, and a bad one in my lower back so I can't sprint or lift over 40 lbs.

      @@ca8335 How do I find a good bed? I'm not allowed to have one here and I can't afford another place. I can't even walk most of the time because my stomach creates slight priapism which is indecent in public. I have to hide on the couch in pain until the next day and then dread work and hate being inapropriate at work until I leave and feel like quitting the whole time I'm there. What would Jocko do if he had slight priapism when he went to train jujitsu? It doesn't feel right. I don't think I should do anything. Nobody knows what that's like, apparently. I guess I'm the only one with these problems in the entire world. Thanks for trying. I still don't know what to do, but if I ever find a moment where I feel comfortable, then I'll go for long walks, thanks.

    1:14:38 The nobody listening guy.... that potentially sounds like a kid looking for a gun. I hope not. I also hope they got to the end of what Jocko had to say.
