Petrick my man. Love the t-shirt. Green Bone 💚💚💚. Also want to say love your choices of sci-fi books. I just finished Howling Dark and it blew my mind. Dune is my most fave sci-fi and Howling Dark came so close !! I wonder if Demon in White will outpace it. 😅
I had the exact same experience reading the first chapter of the vanished birds! I also thought of the Ken Liu comparison, and Spear Cuts Through Water is maybe my favorite book I read this year - can't wait to hear your thoughts once you get to it. It has one of the most gorgeous covers in my collection. Simon Jimenez is definitely on my insta-buy list now.
Petrick I am curently on "Wall of Storms" Dandelion Dynasty. "Grace of Kings" felt like Aerys's reign and Roberts rebellion(25-30 years in 1 books). I am glad i got recommended by you! At first remembering names was hard but eventually I adapted. I just started Mistborn: The Final empire parallelly. After learning how big Cosmere is it was necessary to be absorbed in! I think after finishing these two I'll take on a SF series and Joe Abercrombie's The First Law....
Sun Eater is such a good series that after finishing it, no other book was sticking for me these last couple weeks so I just got to reread sun eater. From book 2 on every entry in the series is elite . Demon in White is my favorite one with kingsdoms of death and howling dark tied for 2nd
Great books all in all, being Hyperion is only one of the older ones on your list, there are so many older sci-fi novels that you should explore, of course leaving Dune out of that list. To name a few of the authors that I have loved, Miller, Delaney, Mieville, Bear, Brin, Bedford, Robinson, Dick, Willis, Asimov, Clarke etc, etc. We you get a chance you should read a couple of these a year, as a break away from Fantasy to refresh the pallet so to speak, LOL.
@ Brian Lee Durfee just posted a review of the Commonwealth Saga. The man knows the thing. 😎of course he has by accident in the video background Culture.
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is my all time favorite sci-fi book. The next are the two books in AG Riddle's The Extinction Files series, namely Pandemic and Genome. I think Blake Crouche's best work is the three-book Wayward Pines series. Thank you.
I’m reading Recursion right now after reading Dark Matter earlier this year. Not too far into the book yet but I really enjoyed Dark Matter so I have no doubt it’s gonna be good!
Hoping to get to more SF in the future. So far my only favorites are from Octavia E. Butler, the "Earthseed" duology and "Kindred". As an honorable mention I have "Annihilation" by Jeff VanderMeer. It would have been a favorite if I did not watched the movie first (back when I only read Lit Fic). When I watched the movie I did not knew about the book so I spoiled myself for the twist. I recommend the movie, but only after reading the book.
I'll definetly read some of those in future ! Thank you Petrik ! How is it going with Crossroads ? :)) Merry X-mass Petrikk !!!! Favourite Sci-Fi I think it is Dune ! :D
You should try reading the devoured worlds trilogy by Megan E. O’Keefe! I love to see women writing sci-fi and she NAILED it! It’s an incredible trilogy.
I dont really read a lot of sci-fi I am more lf a fantasy and horror person so i think for sci fi i have to say red rising (onlfy read the original trilogy but just started iron gold) is my favorite and then dune after that but i only read the first book for that i plan to finish the series soon (frank not brian) I'm not sure why i havent read them yet because i liked the first book a lot
i’m currently on ashes of man and as much as i loved demon and white and kingdoms of death, howling dark is just something special to me….. *POTENTIAL SPOILERS* from the betrayals, to the romance, to Kharn Segara, the secrets behind him, The Quiet, Switch, Bassander Lin and Prince Aranata…. Howling Dark is my favorite sci-fi book of all time (as of 2024)
In the last 10/15 years i didn’t see great sf books. For me the last great sf cycle has been revelation space by Alastair Reynolds. We had great sf in the 80-90s. C.j. Cherry, frederick pohl (gateway), vernor vinge, david brin, lois mcmaster bujold, orson scott card, dan simmons, ian banks. Apart dan simmons, all this great authors have been forgotten. Or so it seems to me.
This is very skewed toward recent releases. That doesn't mean there aren't good books in this list but that's my biggest pet peeves with most fantasy/scifi booktubers, they all read the same books and all those books are fairly recent...
@@franckcoffin463 Too bad my list doesn't click with you. For what its worth, i tried several scifi classics and many of them did not gel with me. Dune does not even made it to my favorites. Just a matter of preference. If you have such a big pet peeve with most SFF booktubers, don't hesitate to stop watching. No offense taken! You should always prioritize what you like to watch for yourself. 😊
Kingdoms Of Death is definitely my favorite of the series and is also my book of the year. Truly a masterpiece.

Amazing list, agree with all except Hyperion, couldn’t stand that one. Maybe I should give it a second chance haha.
